Hentai_JP's Anime
take a look at Hentai_JP's MangaSeen some is more like a "Watching what is currently airing in Japan" section. I don't include titles I'm actually watching right now since I finish series rather fast. Things I drop after a few episodes don't deserve to appear here or elsewhere in my lists. Needless to say the ratings in this category if present are not final, but they do reflect my obsession with the series, instead of marking my emotional attachment and the overall quality like in Seen All category.
A little about my likes and what you may find in the comments. I value Drama above other genres, then Romance and Comedy, so I may be am a little biased; overrating series that fall under my interest. Good characters make me feel their pain and their joy, so drama means a lot to me. There is one theme I don't like though - cyberpunk. I usually avoid those. Comments mostly contain my impressions and/or recommendation to those who have yet to see the series so I've tried to keep spoilers out or cover them in black. Feel free to PM me if you have a suggestion, criticism or your own recommendation.

3x3 Eyes (OAV) | Decent | |
5 Centimeters Per Second (movie) | Excellent
Accelerando - Datenshi-tachi no Sasayaki (OAV) | Very good | Ok so in chronological order here we go: Stringendo 1-2, Accelerando 1-2, Stringendo & Accelerando 1-3, Stretta 1-2, Stringendo 3-4, Accelerando 3-4 and, finally, Stringendo 5-12(!).
Woo. I think that is it gentleman. This series by Seto Yuuki is the best hentai I've seen both story and art wise. No, I am not joking. This is also the longest running hentai in existence, but its not best because it's so long, its this long because it is best. |
AD Police (OAV) | Not really good
Afro Samurai (TV) | Decent
Afro Samurai: Resurrection (movie) | Decent
After Class Lesson (OAV) | Very good | When it's gotten to this point 'nice boat' is the only way out. |
Aggretsuko (ONA) | Excellent
Ah! My Goddess (TV) | Decent
Ah! My Goddess: The Movie | So-so
Ai Yori Aoshi (TV) | Decent
Air (TV) | Excellent | |
Air (movie) | Very good | |
Air In Summer (special) | Excellent
Akame ga KILL! (TV) | Very good | Poor Mine, really the only one that gave me feels. |
Aki Sora (OAV) | Bad | |
Akiba Girls (OAV) | Very good
Akira (movie) | Decent | |
Alien Nine (special) | Weak | Yuri Otani is the most annoying crybaby in anime I've seen. She is always depressed and about to cry at any minute... which she does frequently. I was practically begging for someone to put her out of her misery. Though I do like the idea of 'alien hats'. |
Amagami SS (TV) | Good | |
Amagami SS+ (TV) | Very good
Amagi Brilliant Park (TV) | Decent
Amazing Nuts! (OAV) | Decent | + Global Astroliner Number, Kung-Fu Love - Glass Eye, Joe and Marilyn |
Angel Beats! (TV) | Decent | *Sign* Key has been improving on their novels. First was Kanon, then Air and Clannad, where each new story takes it a step further making it overall better. Angel Beats on the other hand is a three steps back. If with previous works the carefully constructed drama feels more and more real, Angel Beats managed to reduce it back to the original, stripped down to it's flesh formula: sad scene(like life-story) -> please cry now... It's that bad. Incomprehensible story and rapidly shifting mood doesn't help either: one minute it's slapstick comedy next it's dead serious. There are some good points but overall Angel Beats is a big failure. Yet I am somehow certain that there is going to be an avid fanbase of this... |
Angel's Egg (movie) | Weak
Animation Runner Kuromi (OAV) | Very good
Animation Runner Kuromi 2 (OAV) | Very good
(The) Animatrix (OAV) | Good
anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day (TV) | Very good
Another (TV) | Very good | |
Aoi Bungaku Series (TV) | Weak
Aoki Honō (OAV) | Good | |
Appleseed (movie) | Weak
Aquatic Language (special) | Decent
Ar Tonelico (OAV) | Decent | Pretty good first episode... where is the rest? |
Aria - The Natural (TV) | Excellent
Aria the Animation (TV) | Excellent | Best viewed while undergoing the treatment of insomnia, otherwise I recommend consuming it in small batches of two-three episodes, as high dozes may unexpectedly knock you out. As for me I... I cherish this franchise. There is nothing quite like it. Build on the feeling of happiness it teaches the joy of little mundane things and I love it for this. Not to say that this series is devoid of conflict, it is simply accepting of all good and bad, as well as being universally optimistic. I can't name any other title that can bring such a wonderful message. Simply outstanding. |
Aria the Origination (TV) | Masterpiece | How can I not rate it a masterpiece? The way Aria ends is simply perfect and by this point I share so many wonderful memories of this franchise I can't help but absolutely love it. You got me ARIA, you sure did. /cry |
Aria the OVA ~Arietta~ | Excellent
Asobi Asobase -workshop of fun- (TV) | Masterpiece
Attack on Titan (TV) | Masterpiece
Attack on Titan (TV 2/2017) | Excellent
Ayumayu Theater (ONA) | Decent
Azumanga Daioh (TV) | Very good
Azumanga Daioh - The Very Short Movie | Good
Azumanga Web Daioh (ONA) | Good
Baby Blue (movie) | Very good
Baby Steps (TV) | Very good
Baby Steps (TV 2) | Very good | Note to self: read raw. |
Baccano! (TV) | Good | |
Baka and Test - Summon the Beasts (TV) | Good | Why couldn't they just stick to the light novel? This could've been great, but its not. |
Baka and Test - Summon the Beasts 2 (TV) | Decent
Baka and Test: Summon the Beasts OVA | Decent
Bakemonogatari (TV) | Masterpiece
Bamboo Blade (TV) | Very good
Banner of the Stars (TV) | Excellent
Banner of the Stars II (TV) | Excellent
Banner of the Stars III (OAV) | Excellent | I can't even describe how beautiful the endings of Crest/Banners are. Every ending is touching in many ways, and when I saw this one... I couldn't help but shed some tears. The overwhelming sadness and happiness proved to be too much for me. I don't remember crying because a franchise is ending(as opposed to sad ending), but I did here. I am depressed, |
Barakamon (TV) | Very good
Barefoot Gen (movie) | Very good
Barefoot Gen 2 (movie) | Very good
Basilisk (TV) | Excellent | Most of the series has a very strong narrative, with some weaker spots here and there, however the entire last episode and at least 3 other scenes in Basilisk are of unquestionable masterpiece level of execution and directing: Okoi (bloodlust), Hotarubi (butterflies) and Koshiro (black hole, Oboro's bodyguard) dying scenes are absolutely amazing, and tear-jerking. While Basilisk is a little short of masterpiece rating it has become one of the very special series to me. I absolutely love it. |
Battle Angel (OAV) | So-so
Battle Athletes (OAV) | Decent
Battle Athletes Victory (TV) | Decent
Beat Angel Escalayer (OAV) | Very good | Love this one. Not only this hentai title has good action and, umm, other 'action' scenes but it also has pretty decent story and pleasing animation & character design. |
Ben-To (TV) | Good | |
Berserk (TV 1997) | Masterpiece | Absolutely brilliant development and characterization. Viewing this multiple times for me is a must, as generally only then I really listen to what everyone says and pay extra attention to character actions. And so, the new depth I discovered in this beautiful Golden Age arc is stunning. The fact the series brings monsters, and later in manga an outright fairytale, is the only disservice the show has. Regardless, what we get here is more important, especially when the whole package is simply a masterpiece of a "flashback". |
Bible Black (OAV) | Good | |
Bible Black Only (OAV) | Decent
Bible Black Origins (OAV) | Good
Bible Black: New Testament (OAV) | Decent
Birdy the Mighty (OAV) | So-so
Birdy the Mighty Decode:02 (TV) | Good
Birdy the Mighty: Decode (TV) | Good
Black Lagoon (TV) | Excellent | Childish action but very heavy themes and mature storyline. |
Black Lagoon: Roberta's Blood Trail (OAV) | Excellent
Black Lagoon: The Second Barrage (TV) | Excellent
Black Rock Shooter (OAV) | Decent | "Who are you?" "I am... I am... BLACK ROCK SHOOTER!!!" whaaaat? And she says that with such confidence as if the title was self-explanatory, like God. Seriously, what does that supposed to mean. Is she... shooting at black rocks, or using black rocks as bullets? Needs a sequel to make it at least somewhat comprehensible. |
Blessing of the Campanella (TV) | Good | Campanella is special, one of the best in it's rating category. It is somewhat similar to Aria, only Campanella introduces antagonists (late into the show) which, while bringing in some cool fights, also become a center of unnecessary below-average drama in late episodes. Also don't be looking for |
Blessing of the Campanella (OAV) | Good
Blood: The Last Vampire (movie) | Good
Bludgeoning Angel Dokuro-chan (TV) | Good
Blue Exorcist (TV) | Decent
Blue Gender (TV) | Good | |
Body Jack - Tanoshii Yutai Ridatsu (OAV) | Good | I want this machine for myself! This is very interesting near-hentai from Pink Noise series of 4 ecchi OVAs (other 3 are: Call Me Tonight, Maryu Senki and Gakuen Tokusou Hikaruon). Body Jack is somewhat educational as well, as his childhood friend tuns out to be a much more decent girl than hot and popular girl he has a crush on. I also liked that the voice-actor is same guy who voiced Godai from Maison Ikkoku(as I always wanted to see him do this and that to Kanrinin-san[Kyoko]). |
Body Transfer (OAV) | Good
BOFURI: I Don't Want to Get Hurt, so I'll Max Out My Defense. (TV) | Good
Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai (OAV) | Decent
Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai Add On Disc (OAV) | Decent
Bokura ga Ita (TV) | Very good | To summarize: girl A falls in love with boy B, sounds simple eh? Only boy B had a girlfriend C in middle school. That girl C had dated boy D, a very violent person who frequently beat her up, before she met boy B. When boy B and girl C fall in love they promise "never to betray" each other. However later, girl C dies in a car accident while she was riding with her former boyfriend D! Naturally boy B feels betrayed and that leaves a deep scar on him. While trying to forget girl C, boy B gets seduced/consoled by her sister E who also secretly likes boy B! I HAVEN'T EVEN GOT TO "A" AND "B" RELATIONSHIP WHICH IS THE MAIN PLOT!!! For fans of Santa Barbara: Bokura Ga Ita gets a 'recommended stamp'. To be fair, this series is not bad nor as melodramatic as it sounds, though it does walk a very thin line and therefore isn't for everyone. I wish the series actually ended... |
Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan Second (OAV) | Decent | Too much of the repetition. TV series actually has some resemblance of story, this one doesn't... |
Boobalicious (OAV) | Decent
Brave Story (movie) | Good | Great movie for kids as well as adults. Action & Adventure genre in it's full glory. |
Btooom! (TV) | Very good | |
Bubblegum Crisis (OAV) | Decent
Bungaku Shōjo (movie) | Decent
Bungaku Shōjo Memoir I - Yume-Miru Shōjo no Prelude (OAV) | Decent
Bungaku Shōjo: Kyō no Oyatsu - Hatsukoi (OAV) | Good
Bunny Drop (TV) | Excellent
Cafe Junkie (OAV) | Good | |
Call Me Tonight (OAV) | Decent
CANAAN (TV) | So-so | Mamiko Noto - voice that KILLS!!! I knew it! This is one of the series where I kept telling myself: "It's going to get better, it's going get better" all the time. But then I realized that only few episodes are left and it still hasn't: "DAAUUUUMMMMMN!". |
Candy Boy (ONA) | Bad | "Slice of life" extreme, where I don't see any conflict (no, annoying imouto with siscon doesn't count) and by extension any point of even making this series. This is not Aria, not Kamichu!, not To Heart, not even Figure 17... it's simply bad in slice of life genre. And whats up with 10-30 second stills? |
Cardcaptor Sakura (TV) | Excellent | Sakura aired right after Sailor Moon epicness had ended. It fixed my withdrawal at the time. While it wasn't my gateway to anime, I wouldn't be surprised if Sakura did it for others. Afterall it is one of the epic magical girl series. |
Cardcaptor Sakura The Movie 2: The Sealed Card | Excellent | Worthy ending to a great Cardcaptor Sakura saga. Could be better and I'd normally rate something like this a very good, but the ending made it all worth it :D. When Sakura leaps into Shaoran's arms, and the fact that they finally got together made me feel all fluffy inside. Must see for fans. |
Cardcaptor Sakura: The Movie | Good | I was fully expecting ever-filming Tomoyo to say "I like watching little girls" any time. Original Cardcaptor Sakura doesn't have villans, but now that one appears story shows much of weakness. To it's credit animation and art are detailed but as I said the story isn't as compelling. |
Case Closed: The Last Wizard of the Century (movie 3) | Decent
Casshern (live-action movie) | Not really good
Casshern Sins (TV) | Masterpiece | Casshern is voiced by no less than Tohru Furuya. He fits his voice to the role perfectly, as expected of the man-legend. Casshern is a cyborg who lost his memory after killing Luna and bringing doom to all robots - The Ruin. Thus begins his journey to regain his memory, understand and atone for what he has done in the past. Casshern SINS is stylish and captivating, it has a rather slow progress, but for those who like thought-provoking series you just might love it. Because while it does have weaker moments at its core it's simply breathtaking. |
Castle in the Sky (movie) | Good | "Standard" Ghibli movie, with their "standard" character design, "standard" character archetypes and somewhat involving story. Ghibli movies are really hit or miss for me, this one isn't much of a 'hit'. |
Cat Planet Cuties (TV) | Good | Asobi ni Ikuyo! |
Cat Planet Cuties (OAV) | Good
(The) Cat Returns (movie) | Very good
Cat Soup (OAV) | Excellent | Surreal adventure of world bending proportions. Thanks to it's unconventional story and unique style Cat Soup is as weird as it gets. |
Cencoroll (movie) | Very good | I want more! |
A Certain Magical Index (TV) | Very good | To be brief - Index is better than Shana but not quite F/SN. I am very much looking forward to second season, and hope it won't be such a disappointment that Shana was. As to other notes... I think "Last Order" is best chapter, that one had my full attention at all times. Then we have our adorably dangerous Misaka Mikoto and her chapter, MISAKA (imouto), as well as her clone NETWORK and bosstype-loli-MISAKA, are among highlights. After much pondering I've decided to bump it to 'excellent' for the sheer excitement I had while watching Index. Great series, should be watched in BluRay only. Also make sure to check out To Aru Majutsu No Index-tan. Shata-tan type special only way, WAY more hilarious. |
A Certain Scientific Railgun (TV) | Decent | Less action, less story, more girls, more slice of life, same amount of excessive exposition and much worse story arcs compared to Index. Very much worse than Index. I actually had a realization after watching this series. It seems I underestimated just how important it is to have great supporting characters to really bring out the shine of the main character. Misaka is great in Index because she has Touma; in Railgun there is no one who can stand up to her. If Touma ever exclaimed: "You are NOTHING without me!" he would be absolutely correct. Touma is essential for Misaka to shine. So in the end, Index, I appreciate you a whole lot more now... |
Chaos;HEAd (TV) | Not really good | Chaos;HEAd starts out well, however it gets more and more confusing with each episode and now I share the pain of everyone who has rated Chaos "decent" and below. Just look at how many genres creators packed in a twelve episode series: action, drama, horror, mystery, psychological, romance(really?), science fiction, supernatural, thriller. Sounds like a good horror right? WRONG! First few episodes are pretty scary, I'll give Chaos a credit for that, but then series tries to be smarter and more complicated than it should eventually losing me after episode eight["How did you find us?" "I was lead by the Great Will!"]. After that episode it only gets more ridiculous with plot revelations flying out like a snowballs in your face. Nishijou suddenly becomes brave, determined and powerfull after bitching how weak, scared and confused he is for 10 episodes, and all it took is 3 minutes of pondering on how cute and supportive Rimi is. If you want to see good horror with delusions vs. reality theme watch Perfect Blue, at least Satoshi Kon knows how to make it right. On the other hand if you want to see something because it's bad - Chaos;HEAd is perfect for that. |
Charlotte (TV 2015) | Decent
Chibits (special) | Good | The best moment in this special is when Chii's skirt got lifted by the wind... and the following shock of observers. |
Chihayafuru (TV) | Very good
Chihayafuru 2 (TV) | Very good
Chiko, Heiress of the Phantom Thief (TV) | So-so
Children Who Chase Lost Voices (movie) | Decent
Chobits (TV) | Good | |
Chobits (OAV) | Good | |
Chrono Crusade (TV) | Decent
Clannad (movie) | Good | Clannad movie is a horrible introduction to Clannad world. Watch TV series for full impact. I watched it because I fell in love with it's world after watching anime adaptation and playing visual novel. It's an interesting alternate retelling of those. Sunohara doesn't get picked on by Okazaki as much while other character personalities and relationships are changed a bit as well. It's a fun movie, check it out only if anime and visual novel is not enough. |
Clannad (TV) | Excellent | First season of Clannad is not quite as packing with emotional drama as it's sequel. It is however the essential building block for all the characters' establishment and development. Upon my second viewing I discovered some of the very same outstanding scenes that make After Story what it is, while I completely missed them the first time. I now gained even more respect for this franchise. Tomoyo's Chapter OAV deserves a special mention. It is incredible. KyoAni significantly improved original ending of visual novel making it an absolute masterpiece. Too bad it's so short and can't deliver the level of intimacy Tomoyo and Okazaki had. Nevertheless it still is an excellently executed one episode adaptation. |
Clannad After Story (TV) | Masterpiece | I don't have top 10 but I consider this series to be the best anime I have ever seen. Yes, #1. That is because this time, after Tomoya managed to help everyone, happens the unthinkable. Clannad After Story steps into the grounds [no] anime had ever gone before - the after-school life. The process of transformation from a kid to an adult has never been done so well (in anime at least). All of this is done with real feelings of doubt, fear and anxiety; as well as gentle support of parents and friends. After Story raises the most important value in life - family. That goes beyond mere entertainment, and as someone has said: "Clannad is Life". Again, special mention for Kyou's Arc OAV. I am always impressed by Kyo(u)Ani adaptations as they improve on original on every level. This OAV is a clear example of that. Original drags a lot, with way too much character confusion and insecurity. This one episodes brings out only the very best parts making drama incredibly more powerful. Yet another one-episode masterpiece from KyoAni and Key. |
Classroom of the Elite (TV) | Very good | Youkoso Jitsuryoku... |
Classroom of the Elite II (TV 2) | Excellent
Claymore (TV) | Excellent | I remember dismissing this as garbage after watching first two episodes. Claymore doesn't start strong, but I stuck with it and by end of fourth episode I was inrigued. Then episodes 5-8 made me practically beg for more. Great drama and storytelling, not all questions are answered by the end of the series as manga is still ongoing, but Claymore is definitely worth checking out if you like fantasy style anime. |
Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion (TV) | Masterpiece | I have rated quite a few series as Masterpiece. The reasons are varying of course but I can easily say that most of them have stronger and weaker episodes/recaps/fillers and whatnot. Code Geass' (nearly) every episode is a Masterpiece level (Like Mushi-shi or Bakemonogatari). Never-slowing-down story, thats filled with bangs and unexpected plot twists, great characters, I could sympathize with all of them, art & animation, music, voiceacting... everything is executed nearly perfectly. |
Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2 (TV) | Masterpiece | Second season is a direct continuation of first + one year. Just as good, or even better than first, R2 kept me chained to my seat untill it was over. Code Geass manages to satisfy many fans with story, that can be analysed, mecha action, supernatural elements as well as bishounen/bishoujo character design and of course DRAMA! :D This series is #3 on ANN for a reason. |
Code Geass: Nunnally in Wonderland (OAV) | Good
Colorful (TV) | Good | |
Colorful (movie) | Good | |
Comedy (OAV) | Excellent
(The) Comic Artist and His Assistants (TV) | Very good
Corpse Princess: Aka (TV) | Good | Good action with fluid animation, but at the same time it fails where many other "wanna-be" titles do - story. |
Cowboy Bebop (TV) | Excellent
Cowboy Bebop: The Movie | Excellent
Crest of the Stars (TV) | Masterpiece | I honestly did not expect to find such a rewarding drama (with subtle romance). Crest of Stars is beyond being merely "involving", it is absolutely captivating. Not many series manage to have most episodes leaving "It ended already? Where did my time go?" feeling (in a good way). Jinto and Lafiel are definitely one of the best couples ever. I like opening and ending sequence a lot as well. Overall great series, yet, as overall ratings suggest, not everyone might find it as fascinating as I do. Drama fans simply must watch this saga. |
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners (ONA) | Masterpiece
Dai Mahou Touge Omake (OAV) | Very good | Just as hilarious as Magical Witch Punie-chan and it gives us more background about magical kingdom. |
Dai-Guard (TV) | Decent | "The series can easily be described as forgettable and vastly undistinguished" - Bamboo Dong DVD 2 review. Watched on the adult swim, back when I had Rogers, had a TV, went to school and still lived with mah parents... |
Daily Lives of High School Boys (TV) | Very good | Some of the jokes are drop dead hilarious, if only they were more consistent. |
Darker than Black (TV) | Very good
Darker than Black - Kuro no Keiyakusha: Gaiden (OAV) | Very good
Darker than Black: Gemini of the Meteor (TV) | Very good
Dead Leaves (OAV) | Very good
Death Billiards (movie) | So-so
Death Note (live-action movie) | Very good
Death Note (TV) | Masterpiece
Death Note Relight - Visions of a God (special) | Good
Death Note: The Last Name (live-action movie) | Very good
Demon City Shinjuku (OAV) | Not really good
Demon King Daimao (TV) | Very good | Wild. Unpredictable. Almost Incomprehensible... AND IT WORKS!!! Overall very enjoyable, and hilarious harem, with an actual plot and remarkable male lead. I also like the ending sequence which is very sweet. One more thing, episode title for the last episode promises perfect ending, and it actually delivers it. If this ending is not perfect, for given series, I don't know what perfect is. |
Den-noh Coil (TV) | Masterpiece
Denpa teki na Kanojo (OAV) | Very good | Somehow I find this to be similar to Mnemosyne, though I see others comparing it to Kara no Kyokai. Either way this OAV rocks! Very good story and characters, only animation is a bit lacking. Highly recommended. |
Destiny of the Shrine Maiden (TV) | Good | I agree with Theron, it does turn out to be a better show by the end, only it takes seven episodes to finally start to get interesting. I am glad I stuck with it though as shoujo ai drama, and episode eight in particular :P , made it overall worth it. While first half of the series is around "so-so" quality, second half is mostly "very good" with quite a few excellent/masterpiece level scenes (I marathoned 7-12 in one sitting, while it took me a few days for 1-6). Hard to rate. |
Detroit Metal City (OAV) | Excellent
(The) Devil Is a Part-Timer! (TV) | Good | Hataraku Maou-sama. |
Di Gi Charat (TV) | Decent
Di Gi Charat - A Trip to the Planet (movie) | Decent
(The) Diary of Tortov Roddle (ONA) | Not really good
Dirty Pair: Project Eden (movie) | Decent
(The) Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya (movie) | Excellent | Too long, too slow and not particularly clever. Kyon is freaking out for too long and in stupid ways. He panics for what feels like eternity especially considering all he's been through in the past 9 month. Why yell at every classmate when he realized his situation? Then there wer Mikuru and Yuki scenes of incoherently stupid freakouts? Really, I don't know if this mirrors light novel but leaving it as it was is simply bad directing. Easily, the best thing about this movie was Asakura. She clearly did not have enough screen time in the TV series and I loved seeing her return for the Disappearance. |
(The) Dog of Flanders (movie) | Excellent
Dojin Work (TV) | Decent | Mostly funny, light-hearted look at doujinshi production. I find maid cafe to be the best episode by far. |
Don't Tell Mother Maria (special) | Good
(The) Door into Summer (movie) | Decent
Dragon Half (OAV) | Good | Short funny story. I love the voice actor lineup: best seiyuu from 90es voiced Dragon Half. Its a shame it never got completed(4 episodes were planned). |
Earl and Fairy (TV) | Good
(The) Eccentric Family (TV) | Good
Eden of the East (TV) | Very good
Eden of the East: Paradise Lost (movie) | So-so
Eden of the East: The King of Eden (movie) | Decent
ef: a tale of melodies (TV) | Very good
ef: a tale of memories (TV) | Excellent
Eiken (OAV) | Good | I don't understand what is so 'offensive' about this short OVA. Huge breasts is nothing compared to many other things beautiful country of Japan has produced. While Eiken is somewhat boring, at times it is hilarious as well. Not a waste of time to check this one out. |
El-Hazard 2: The Magnificent World (OAV) | So-so
El-Hazard: The Magnificent World (OAV) | Good
Elfen Lied (TV) | Masterpiece | This was my first anime series as I finally figured what anime is. And what is a better way to get into anime but by watching absolutely outstanding series filled with brutal violence and blood, beautiful visuals, depressing yet fascinating story and deep characters? I can't even describe the emotional impact this series had on me. One of the best shows I've seen. |
Elfen Lied (OAV) | Very good | Additional insight on Elfen Lied when Lucy finally lost all hope for humanity. As dramatic as main series. |
Emma: A Victorian Romance (TV) | Very good | It is like reading a book, only the book would be a better medium for this story. |
Emma: A Victorian Romance Second Act (TV) | Excellent | Overall Emma just can't survive the second viewing. Do try to get everything out of it the first time around. I feel bad for Eleanor; sure she might be boring, but she tries her hardest given her limited knowledge and taking into account the surrounding she was brought up in. |
Encouragement of Climb (TV) | Good | A very pleasant short series. |
ERASED (TV) | Very good | |
Ergo Proxy (TV) | Weak | Ergo starts out ok, it has interesting characters and the budget for good animation, but story... It lost me by the middle of it and istead of being suble and meaningful it turned out weird for the sake of being weird. The best moment in the whole series, for me, was when Iggy went bunkers and finally told Real what a selfish bitch she is. |
Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone (movie) | Very good
Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance (movie) | Very good | I expected this to be different from TV series, and it is. I expected it to have a much-improved animation, and it is. I expected it to have the same or better level of storytelling, and it doesn't have it. I expected it to have old soundtrack or new, better one, and it doesn't have it either. Instead we have a light-hearted half-recycled story that carries some of the depth of it's predecessor yet fails to deliver it. The atrocious choice for a soundtrack doesn't help either, they simply borrowed it from another series and barely touched the soundtrack from original TV series... The insert song, for example, is completely inappropriate for the scene Eva 01 controlled by dummy system tears apart "Angel" with trapped human pilot. Don't get me wrong, I do understand how tremendously difficult it is to improve on a masterpiece, yet I couldn't believe how far this movie could stray from the greatness of original. Now about stuff I liked, like Mari. This girl is my rebuild-eva-favourite (Asuka is awesome of course, only I like her personality in original a lot more). The fight scenes and Angel design is just an eye candy. Some fanservice is a welcome addition as well; it would be inappropriate in the original but given the mood of rebuild fanservice fits. Hey, I even think they got one song right: one that plays when the ending credits roll :P. Also, if first movie has 10-20% new material this one has about 50% new material, and next movie is promising to be very, very different. Time will tell. Oh and, Asuka in the TEST Plug-Suit?!? Y-YES!!! |
Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo (movie) | Very good
Excel Saga (TV) | Very good
Expelled from Paradise (movie) | Excellent | Greatness. 3DCG for the entire run done right, hope the art will only improve in the future. |
F3 (OAV) | Decent | |
(The) Familiar of Zero (TV) | Very good | Absolutely hilarious, many times I was nearly rolling on the floor laughing - Rie Kugimiya's slave abuse is that awesome! Story holds up pretty well too and while I like this series quite a bit I can't say the same about the sequels... |
(The) Familiar of Zero: Knight of the Twin Moons (TV) | So-so | Ugh... generally inferior, filled with filler story. What did you say? "There is no filler the story is just bad"? *sign* |
(The) Familiar of Zero: Rondo of Princesses (TV) | Weak | Downhill quality spiral of DOOM!!! I really should've stopped after finishing first season as even the combination of Rie Kugimiya, Yui Horie, Mamiko Noto and Ayako Kawasumi isn't enough to save this title from being terrible... |
Fate/stay night (TV) | Excellent | Why was this a masterpiece? I thought I saw something truly beautiful in here, but the more I think about it the more I realize the message I was seeing is simply my wishful thinking as this series hardly delivers it at all. |
Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works (movie) | Weak | I haven't been this disappointed in a very, very long time. This movie does everything wrong. It rushes through important plot points so fast(or skips them, or DOES THEM WRONG) the whole story is barely comprehensible, which in turn denies all the shock and thrill the visual novel has. |
Fate/Zero (TV) | Decent | |
Fate/Zero (TV 2) | Decent

Final Approach (TV) | Very good
Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children (movie) | So-so

First Squad - The Moment Of Truth (OAV) | Good | WWII and undead, add paranormal ablities of Nadia and we have First Squad. Watched it in russian, because I can. I'd say there is too much commentary and it does come out a little propagandistic: "Russians are best!". |
FLCL (OAV) | Very good | |
Food Wars! Shokugeki no Soma (TV) | Very good
Food Wars! Shokugeki no Soma: The Fourth Plate (TV) | Decent | Endings in any medium can make or brake the work, and oh boy this ending was abysmal. Barely any "animation" did not help either, as I am not a fan of powerpoint. |
Food Wars! The Second Plate (TV) | Very good
Food Wars! The Third Plate (TV) | Very good
Food Wars! The Third Plate (TV 2) | Very good

Freedom (OAV) | Weak | |
Fruits Basket (TV 1/2001) | Masterpiece | For full duration Fruits Basket remains entertaining and can easily get "Excellent". However last three episodes are... absolutely amazing! The ending is incredibly well done where powerful emotional scene is followed by another powerful emotional scene, and another, resolving main issues within the series very well. The ending sequence is so powerful I cried like a baby for whole three episodes. Incredible ending, I wish more series could manage to end things in such a satisfying way. |

Fullmetal Alchemist (TV)
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (TV) | Excellent | I got into FMA franchise with manga first, then picked TV series but since it stopped following manga around episode 20 I dropped it at the time. I am glad I did. Hearing later that Brotherhood is an actual manga adaptation I decided to pick it up again... and it's great! I'd recommend watching Brotherhood instead of first TV series for those who haven't seen either. |
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (OAV) | Decent
Fullmetal Alchemist: The Movie - Conqueror of Shamballa | Good
Fullmetal Alchemist: The Sacred Star of Milos (movie) | Good
Futakoi Alternative (TV) | Not really good
(The) Future Diary (TV) | Very good | Mirai Nikki has something I can only call an amazing beginning. For the first 6/7 episodes it is unquestionably a masterpiece level series that is both exciting, hilarious, shocking and horrifying. Everything moves along in an unpredictable yet gripping fashion where I especially adored and cheered for the psycho-girlfriend as she remains the best aspect of the show until the very end. Sadly, the series drops the ball soon after that as the story suffers from below average reasoning and plot twists, and inconsistent characters. Surprisingly this trainwreck is never boring, just really really bad. |
G-spot Express (OAV) | Good
Gakuen Tokusō Hikaruon (OAV) | So-so

Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence (movie) | Good
Ginban Kaleidoscope (TV) | Very good | Ayako Kawasumi fans will love this one. Her self-centered, arrogant character is just what anime generally lacks. Have to love ending of this series as well: simply perfect. |

GTO: Great Teacher Onizuka (TV) | Excellent
Guardian Hearts (OAV) | Good | Hardly original, but nevertheless fun harem. Story is so ridiculous and fast its actually funny. Every girl in this show has some kind of secret: we have a ninja, an alien (who obtains power and knowledge of profession if she wears it's uniform), then princess from far away planet and a guardian who gave oath to protect Earth... yet they all stay oblivious to each other. That leads to quite a few funny moments where one of them disappears and then comes immediatly back transformed but others don't notice that it's the same person! |
Guardian Hearts Power Up! (OAV) | So-so
Guilty Crown (TV) | So-so | So bad, yet so good. |

Gunsmith Cats (OAV) | Good
Gurren Lagann (TV) | Masterpiece
Gurren Lagann the Movie – The Lights in the Sky Are Stars | Excellent | Even though being mostly a complication of TV series the somewhat changed/added story with new animation, fights and drama makes these movies very much worth it. Fans of Gurren Lagann should check 'em out. |
Gurren Lagann the Movie –Childhood's End- | Very good
.hack//Quantum (OAV) | Good
.hack//SIGN (TV) | Weak | |
Haganai (TV) | Good | |
Haikyu!! (TV) | Very good | Takes itself way too seriously at times, and at times tries too hard with the comedic relief. This creates a kind of high tension tournament anime is best at but at the same time the complete lack of 'quiet moments' makes it look artificial and by extent even pretentious. It loses a point for that. |
Haikyu!! Second Season (TV 2) | Very good
Haiyoru! Nyaruani (ONA) | Good
Hajime no Ippo (TV) | Excellent | This is definitely the manliest series I've seen. Seriously, it is so GAR it hurts... Tournament anime is generally very entertaining to watch and this one is no exception, just be prepared for same formula. Nevertheless, Hajime no Ippo is very rewarding title, especially for those who can appreciate long running series (76 episodes). |
Hajime no Ippo - Champion Road (special) | Excellent | I never expected this series to have strong romance but that confession scene is just PATHETIC! I am already pissed at most harem leads for being wimpy or having essentially no character but when Ippo showed the same symptoms... I got really angry. |
Hajime no Ippo - Mashiba vs. Kimura (OAV) | Very good
Hajime no Ippo Rising (TV) | Very good
Hajime no Ippo: New Challenger (TV) | Excellent | A worthy sequel. Not enough Ippo though... only two fights? I want more!!! |
Hanada Shōnen-shi (TV) | Excellent | Great comedy among other things. Children actually act their age instead of "tiny adults" we often see in anime. |
Hanasaku Iroha - Blossoms for Tomorrow (TV) | Excellent | It was very difficult for me to set on final rating. The series started with amazing first episode and quite a bit of the story is deserving the highest rating while some of it doesn't. I love the opening and ending sequences as well as all other music; and of course the gorgeous and fluid animation. The character dynamics and interactions are effectively funny and/or dramatic. Despite some issues, Hanasaku Iroha is an outstanding drama. |
Hanasaku Iroha: Home Sweet Home (movie) | Very good
Happy Lesson (TV) | So-so
Haré+Guu (TV) | Good | |
Haré+Guu Deluxe (OAV) | Very good
Haruka Nogizaka's Secret (TV) | Good | I like this for it's sweetness. Though I got bored during last few episodes it was worth watching. |
Hataraki Man (TV) | Very good | Hataraki Man - solving midlife crisis. In the end turned out to be way more enjoyable than I expected. Fairly entertaining, mature title. |
Hatsukoi Limited (TV) | Very good

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kira (OAV) | Decent
Higurashi no Naku Koroni Gaiden Nekogoroshi-hen (OAV) | Very good
Hikaru no Go (TV) | Good | |
Hinamatsuri (TV) | Excellent | Very different comedy, it takes itself very seriously and likes to pursue the most absurd directions. Some if this works better than the rest but overall it's great. It pleased me to realize just how good Hinamatsuri works as a drama as well, a rare breed where comedy and serious commentary is well intertwined and entertaining to boot. Anzu best girl. |
His and Her Circumstances (TV) | Excellent
Hōkago no Pleiades (ONA) | Decent
How NOT to Summon a Demon Lord (TV) | Good | It doesn't quite do anything exceptional, in fact most of twists are borderline cliche. Very cute eye art though. |
Howl's Moving Castle (movie) | Very good
Hyperdimension Neptunia (TV) | Good | It started strong, had strong middle but abysmal ending. It is very important to have good endings. |
I''s Pure (OAV) | Very good
Ichigeki Sacchu!! HoiHoi-san (special) | Good
Iketeru Futari (TV) | Very good | If you like ecchi - this is a must; if you like romantic comedies - all more reasons to check it out. Gotta love main characters and their interactions. Oh and "my COSMOS is BURNING!!!" |
Ikki Tousen (TV) | Good | Guilty... nah, PURE pleasure! "Hot girls fighting", bloody violence, fanservice and sex... definitely did not lose my time. |
Ikki Tousen: Dragon Destiny (TV) | Decent
In This Corner of the World (movie) | Excellent
Indian Summer (OAV) | Not really good | Maid fanservise robot girl wish fulfillment. Story is as bad as one would expect. It has a few good moments, like first half of first episode and opener sequence, but overall I wouldn't recommend this to anyone. |
Infinite Stratos (TV) | Decent
Infinite Stratos Encore: Sextet of Burning Love (OAV) | So-so
Interlude (OAV) | Weak | |
Interspecies Reviewers (TV) | Masterpiece | Ishuzoku Reviewers. I am not sure whether to file it under anime or hentai category :P, but I do love this show. |
INTERSTELLA 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem (movie) | Good
Inuyasha (TV) | Very good
InuYasha the Movie 2: The Castle Beyond the Looking Glass | Very good
InuYasha the Movie 3: Swords of an Honorable Ruler | Very good
InuYasha the Movie 4: Fire on the Mystic Island | Good
InuYasha the Movie: Affections Touching Across Time | Very good
InuYasha: The Final Act (TV) | Excellent | I think InuYasha is Rumiko Takahashi's best work. It's also her latest, and I do think she has improved a little. InuYasha is consistently of same quality which makes it immensely more enjoyable than other fluctuating series. Final Act is great because it takes absolute best from bogged and overly dragged franchise and condenses it to pure "awesome". Greatly improved art and animation strengthen this season even further. Though since I liked deeply flawed original so much there was no way I could do anything but love Final Act. Great final(!) season of InuYasha. |
InuYasha: The Tragic Love Song of Destiny (special) | Good
Inyōchū (OAV) | Very good | First episode of this had, and probably still has, the best tentacle action of any hentai. Animation is great from any angle, which is a feat to accomplish as many pornos draw certain angles very poorly. Very effective 1st episode, if you what I mean. |
(The) Irresponsible Captain Tylor (TV) | Excellent | I didn't expect much from this show as it's quite old (1993) and the title is rather unoriginal but I quickly fell in love with it. Well paced story along with well-developed & distinct characters quickly draws you in for an emotional sci-fi ride. Plenty of humor, likable characters, romance and drama are going to keep you chained to your TV or monitor untill its over. Irresponsible Captain Tylor deserves more attention so I higly recommend this classic. Oh and Azalyn-chan is sooo cute. Best of cell shade animation. |

Kakurenbo - Hide & Seek (movie) | Weak
Kaleido Star (TV) | Masterpiece | For me, a true masterpiece is the one that deeply stirs my emotions, the one that shakes me to the core, something I connect and empathize with to the utmost degree. Kaleido Star is such a masterpiece. I love how many curveballs the show is throwing at you constantly, that sure keeps me on the edge of my seat. Thoughts upon second view: this show should be renamed to "Sora, The Suffering". |
Kaleido Star: Legend of Phoenix - Layla Hamilton Story (OAV) | Excellent
Kaleido Star: New Wings Extra Stage (OAV) | Decent
Kamichu! (TV) | Excellent | I find myself unable to describe why I like Kamichu! so much, but I do and thats all that matters. One of the under-appreciated titles in my opinion. |
Kannagi: Crazy Shrine Maidens (TV) | Very good | Comedy gold until last few episodes. The show is best when it lets the characters to interact freely on their own, as opposed to the 'drama' coming from the surroundings (like weather/plot/coincidences). |
Kanojo x Kanojo x Kanojo - San Shimai to no DokiDoki Kyōdō Seikatsu (OAV) | Very good | Using sex to ask a guy to break up with some girl for some other girl's sake... where have I seen this before? |
Kanokon: The Girl Who Cried Fox (TV) | Very good | One of the best ecchi title I've seen. Most of them stray from the path of truly dedicated ecchiness and therefore don't bring as much joy and eye-candy (or enter "porn", which is even worse). Kanokon however gives us well written story(with its flaws of course) and lots and lots of fanservice. Kouta is voiced by Mamiko Noto, which I find to be an ingenious decision. Her baby like voice make a perfect match for Kouta's feeble attempts at resistance. Chizuru is also fun, likable female lead who essentially makes this whole series worth it (Ayako Kawasumi!!!). Every "classic" scene is present in Kanokon - onsen(hot spring), new year, valentine's day, beach; yet every time Chizuru finds a new, refreshing, way to seduce or force herself upon Kouta. |
Kanokon: The Girl Who Cried Fox (OAV) | Very good
Kanon (TV 2/2006) | Good | Another Key's visual novel turned anime. I think that Clannad and even Air is better than Kanon. As usual, Yuuichi is our Mr. Nice Guy standart prototype, manufactured and copyrighted to Key, who is helping young ladies in need. I like Makoto the most, in fact the scene where she tries to remember Yuuichi's and her own name is the only moment that made me shed a tear. I also like Mai and Yuuichi's team fights against invisible monsters. |
Karas (OAV) | Excellent | I really love animation and story of KARAS as both are very well done. City with guardians, vampires, youkai and other supernatural phenomena are all present here. Great action as well make it all worth checking out. |
Katanagatari (TV) | Decent
Keitai Shoujo (ONA) | Weak
Kemeko Deluxe! (TV) | Not really good | Love Rie Kugimiya character, Kiriko, MM and Kurosaki Ryouko (girl with katana; she's cute and cool at the same time!), as well as quality animation. But at the same time story is barely average, Kemeko is annoying and Sanpeita is as wimpy as they get... Kinda worth watching, once. |
Kemonozume (TV) | Excellent
KenIchi the Mightiest Disciple (TV) | Excellent | "Are you a wimpy male who gets bullied? No worries, hawt blond chick will pick you up and drag to her martial arts' instructors to teach you how to be a man." Even though premise is pretty standard KenIchi is a joy to watch, as our guy gradually learns martial arts and beats his bullies one after another... only after each bully he beats a new one is coming out from the shadows. Poor Kenichi has to run and hide, and learn more of martial arts, just to survive the mess he has incidentally started. "Rise to Power" set up done right. |
KenIchi the Mightiest Disciple (OAV) | Decent
Kiki's Delivery Service (movie) | Excellent | Heartwarming and cute + main heroine is not a lazy "supah awzm perfect woman" archetype. |
Kill la Kill (TV) | Excellent
Kill Me Baby (TV) | Not really good
Kimagure Orange Road (TV) | Very good | Ayukawa - raison d'être of Kimagure. With the beauty of a goddess and whimsical yet sweet nature she steals every scene she enterth in. In fact, whenever Ayukawa is left alone with Kasuga the series shines it's vivid bright colours as these scenes are one of the sweetest the anime has produced in its medium. She is so good I found myself coming back only to see more of her and root for the couple, not exactly a complement for the series now that I think of it. But hey, the series also packs one of the most mesmerizing endings ever. On the side note I think this is the only anime I have seen where teenagers are committing such unbelievable atrocities as smoking and drinking alcohol. Anime needs this once in a while. |
Kimagure Orange Road (OAV) | Very good
Kimagure Orange Road: Shonen Jump Special | Decent | Pilot. |
Kimagure Orange Road: The Movie | Very good
Kimi ga Nozomu Eien ~Next Season~ (OAV) | Good | Not so happily ever after with Haruka Suzumiya. I had higher opinion of Haruka, I mean Mitsuki gave up on the guy she likes, despite all she had done and went trought, but now Haruka gets all picky... Takayuki made the right choice in original series and this 'alternate ending' isn't even half as good. Despite that - worth seeing for Haruka fans and those who are in love with Rumbling Hearts' story. |
Kimikiss pure rouge (TV) | So-so | I normally don't get distracted by wimpy guys in anime but Kouichi if freaking annoying. Wimpy AND annoying... Inconsistent animation doesn't help things either (Suzuka has even lower budget for it's animation but it IS consistent). Story starts out interesting but before I noticed became typical soap opera, and having 'slice of life' genre means story drags way, way too much. If you want to see romance with way better story watch Suzuka, though it's animation and attempts at humour are even worse. |
King of Thorn (movie) | Not really good
Kiss×sis (OAV) | Good | I really like this version. It adapts some of the manga chapters keeping all the strong points of it. TV series on the other hand is a disaster. Story is down the toilet, character progress is gone and so on... OAV and Manga have their charms, only TV series completely misses it. |
Kite (OAV) | So-so | |
Kite Liberator (OAV) | Decent
Kodocha (TV) | Very good | Made for children, yet entertaining for all ages! It took fandom by storm back in the day and, well, I am not surprised. Absolutely great story and characters. Funny when it wants to be funny, dramatic when it wants to play drama and romance is very involving and touching as well: my favourite comedy-drama-romance mix of genres at play. Absolutely love ending sequence songs too, not only they are good as stand alone works their lyrics also reflect main themes of the episodes they cover. That is admirable achievement. Kodocha could definitely use another 51 episode season. |
Kodocha (OAV) | ||
Kodomo no Jikan (TV) | Excellent | It would be hard to finish Kodomo no Jikan, like it, and not gain an appreciation for loli term. It's not a bad thing though and this series genuinely deserves the praise. Story has about perfect balance of comedy, romance and drama as well as bringing up difficult time when children start to mature. It's not just a fanservice/forbidden themes pandering, it has deeper meaning. That is why it's fully deserving it's rating. |
Kodomo no Jikan Nigakki (OAV) | Excellent | "Minna Nakadashi!" - my new favourite. Second term is much shorted but since it's an OAV they didn't have to cut out the "inappropriate" parts. As always, Eri Kitamura does excellent job voicing Rin (gotta love her voice). If there is more I will definitely watch it. |
Kodomo no Jikan: Anata ga Watashi ni Kureta Mono (OAV) | Very good | Ever wondered where Aoki-sensei got that picture of Rin on his cellphone? This episode is going to satisfy that curiosity. |
Koi Kaze (TV) | Excellent | If someone tells you that this anime is "bad" ask them if they saw at least one episode of Koi Kaze. Great drama and story. Real siblings fall in love with each other and choose to be together despite all the problems it can cause. I also love Kaname Chidori's character, especially when she tries to reason with Koushirou and then with Nanoka. One of the best written dramas out there. |
Konohana Kitan (TV) | Very good
KONOSUBA - God's blessing on this wonderful world! 2 (TV) | Excellent

Kowarekake no Orgel (OAV) | Good
Kujibiki Unbalance (OAV) | So-so | Made for the world of Genshiken this OAV was meant to be bad, and, well... it is. |
Kure-nai (OAV) | Bad | It violates everything that is good in the TV series. |
Kurenai (TV) | Very good | I was expecting more action from Kure-nai. Fights are well done, but they are far in between. The real focus of this series is Murasaki, and problems with her family traditions. Expect quite a bit of slice of life and drama too. |
Kurozuka (TV) | So-so | |
Kyo no Gononi (OAV) | Very good | Hilarious comedy about fifth graders. Surpisingly ecchi title. Watch this and love it, but don't, under any circumstances, try out TV series. |
Ladies versus Butlers! (TV) | Good
Land of the Lustrous (TV) | Excellent
Last Exile (TV) | So-so | |
Leave it to Kero! Theatrical Version (movie) | Good
A Little Snow Fairy Sugar (TV) | So-so | I didn't expect this to be devastated by filler. Even children deserve better. Also I can't believe how ridiculous certain plot twist is: So the not-very-brilliant child climbed onto a Fortepiano, fine, even less brilliant adults didn't notice her and started to lift the said piano to the second floor... fine... but when the kid was barely hanging ready to fall any moment no one got enough of brains to... simply catch her. I cannot overlook this one. |

Love Hina Again (OAV) | Good
Love Hina Spring Special - I Wish Your Dream | Good
Love Hina X'mas Special - Silent Eve | Very good | X'mas Special is the best part of Love Hina. Finally Naru and Keitarou show their feelings towards each other. Too bad they don't get this close in any other part of Love Hina. |
Love Lab (TV) | Very good | Read. |
Love Live! School idol project (TV) | Decent
Love Selection ~THE ANIMATION~ (OAV) | Very good | In first episode sexually frustrated girls gather some guys for a groupie and in second we have VIP only "service day" in a cafe. Good humor, 'action' and quality. |
Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions! (TV) | Very good
Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions! -Heart Throb- (TV) | Good
Lovely Complex (TV) | Very good
Lu over the wall (movie) | Decent
Lucky Star (TV) | Excellent | Embrace the parody. Lucky Star does just that. The series is not only funny, it also makes me have a silly smile during every episode. Lucky Star is so moe it gives off "warm fuzzy feeling" not many other series manage to achieve. Episodes are essentially about nothing (aka slice-of-life) but they keep me starving for more and more. Oh and Lucky Channel... how can you not love it? One of the best series I've seen. |
Lucky Star OVA | Excellent | More of Lucky Star! We finally get to see the video game Konata plays, a bunch of other cute moments and parodies, and a life action Lucky Channel! |
Lunar Legend Tsukihime (TV) | Not really good
Lupin III: Angel Tactics (special) | Weak
Lupin III: Crisis in Tokyo (special) | Good
Lupin III: Episode 0 'First Contact' (special) | Excellent
Lupin III: Farewell to Nostradamus (movie) | Very good
Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro (movie) | Excellent
Lupin III: The Fuma Conspiracy (movie) | Good
Lupin the 3rd: From Siberia with Love (special) | Weak
Maburaho (TV) | Good | Better than summary might suggest. |
Macross Frontier (TV) | Masterpiece | I haven't seen much of Macross franchise at the time, yet I greatly enjoyed Frontier series. Frontier is an "Excellent ++" level series all way through, but thanks to the satisfying epic ending (and unexplainable extra something along the way) I absolutely can't help but rate this as "Masterpiece". Worth seeing for anyone, even if not familiar with Macross franchise at all (though watching MACROSS: Do You Remember Love (the very first series in a nutshell) movie first is preferred). (Best part in Frontier? Songs of course!!!) |
Macross Frontier: The False Songstress (movie) | Very good
Macross Frontier: The Wings of Farewell (movie) | Very good
Macross Plus (OAV) | Decent
Macross Plus Movie Edition | Very good
Macross Zero (OAV) | Good
Made in Abyss (TV) | Masterpiece | Holy shit the episode 10 is an 11/10. |
Magic User's Club! (TV) | Decent | An OK sequel. Too bad it's inferior on every level and love problems never get resolved either. |
Magic User's Club! (OAV) | Very good | Absolutely hilarious! Diverse characters, all with their crushes and unique personalities make this series a worthy comedy. Takakura is pervert who fantasizes about every girl around him, then we have his gay friend Aburatsubo who openly tries to seduce Takakura, then ever-self-doubting Sae(she is main character), who has a thing for Takakura, Nanako who likes gay guy and finally Akanae who doesn't like anyone in particular but has seemingly dated just about everyone. If you like Magical Girl & somewhat Sci-fi comedies involving teenagers - don't miss Magic User's Club. Sae reminds me of Ahiru from Princess Tutu, or should it be other way around since Magic User's Club was released much earlier. Anyway I really like this title, especially character design. |
Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha (TV) | Excellent | I like Magical Girl titles in general, and this one is a blast. Nanoha and Feito(Fate) are great combo. The way they handle all the difficulties and later Nanoha's support gives us good drama as well. Also unlike in Scrapped Princess addition of sci-fi elements didn't surprise or detract from the series. |
Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha A's (TV) | Excellent | Continuation of first season of Nanoha brings much of good. Improved weapons, misunderstood villains, more drama, Nanoha x Feito friendship and more. I still like first season more for being a bit less melodramatic. |
Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha The MOVIE 1st | Good | "...unleashed the UNSPEAKABLE POWER that ANNIHILATED THE ENTIRE CITY..." |
Magical Girl Site (TV) | Good
Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi (TV) | Very good
Magical Witch Punie-chan (OAV) | Excellent | If you like parodies filled with violence and blood - this is one of them. Punie-chan is a magical girl who oftentimes finds herself unable to use magic, due to trickery of villans or otherwise, and has no other choice but to get physical... "She might've been better off being hurt by magic" is the general feel after she is done. Hilarious all way through. |

(La) Maison en Petits Cubes (movie) | Decent
Maison Ikkoku (TV) | Very good | This series has many great points: it's characters are great, story is involving, comedy is gold. Only it is Rumiko Takahashi's work... meaning it is soooo dragged and unevenly paced I almost regret spending 32 hours of my life to watch this series. In short it was devastated by dumb set-ups, overused character traits and loose focus on the central romance. |
Maison Ikkoku: Kanketsuhen (movie) | Decent
Maison Ikkoku: Shipwrecked on Ikkoku Island (OAV) | Decent
Make Up! Sailor Guardians (movie) | Good
Mardock Scramble: The First Compression (movie) | Very good
Maria Holic (TV) | Very good | This one doesn't focus on romance as much as on comedy. Set in girl high school cast consists of a crossdresser sadistic boy with extremely rude maid, nekomimi dorm mistress A.K.A. self-proclaimed "God" and show's main female lead Kanako (who comes with endless supply of blood). SHAFT doesn't put Shinbo on it so we are not subjected to his odd style, focusing on relatively 'normal' delivery of visuals which helps in this case. Really like this series, it deserves more attention IMHO. |
Maria the Virgin Witch (TV) | Masterpiece | Junketsu no Maria. Ok, I seriously did not want to watch this because of silly title. It sure puts some negative weight on a show that is absolutely brilliant. It is very hard to decide just how great it its in terms of rating, but I am willing to give it all. Only the fact that she loses her power in the end makes it a bittersweet instead of a straight sweet ending. What can I say, I want to have a cake and eat it too. |
Maria Watches Over Us (TV) | Good
Maria Watches Over Us 3rd Season (OAV) | Good
Maria Watches Over Us 4th Season (TV) | Good
Maria Watches Over Us Season 2: Printemps (TV) | Good
Martian Successor Nadesico: The Motion Picture - Prince of Darkness | Good
Master of Martial Hearts (OAV) | So-so | This is one of those series you would watch because it is bad (aka so ridiculous it's funny). Main theme is martial arts, where characters punch and kick so hard that clothes rip off leaving them half-naked (ala Ikki Tousen). But what makes this absolutely priceless is the last episode where ridiculous plot revelations are followed by even more ridiculous plot revelations. This is an Ikki Tousen rip-off, only worse... yes worse. |
Megazone 23 (OAV) | Not really good
(The) Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (TV) | Masterpiece | A blast. |
(The) Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (TV 2009 renewal) | Excellent | エンドレスエイト... *snore* Endless Eight was a horrible idea, but the rest of the season is just what one would expect from Haruhi. I give it Excellent for "Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody", two episodes of "Endless Eight" and "Sign" arc. I wish animation wasn't K-ONified in the process... Looking forward to next installment after Disappearance. Now that they adapted the 'first part' the next anime adaptation should be very interesting. |
(The) Melancholy of Haruhi-chan Suzumiya (ONA) | Decent
Memories (movie) | Good | Stink bomb is the best bomb |
Mezzo Forte (OAV) | Good | |
Midnight Sleazy Train (OAV) | Decent
Millennium Actress (movie) | Excellent
Minami-ke (TV) | Excellent | One of the great comedies. Three sisters living together, all with vastly different personalities can lead to funny encounters by itself. Add eventual addition of a crossdresser boy, deep in his world guy, bunch of friends, three brothers and you have an excellent comedy. Too bad the staff in charge of this franchise was changed for second and third seasons. Despite that I would recommend watching sequels, just give it a little break after first season as drastic style change can be a shock if you move onto sequels immediately after finishing this season. |
Minami-ke Tadaima (TV) | Very good
Minami-ke: Betsubara (OAV) | Very good
Minami-ke: Okaeri (TV) | Good
Minami-ke: Okawari (TV) | Very good | This one obviously struggles with it's jokes in some episodes (director's fault?) but it won me over around half way through. Overall not quite as good as first season but the added charm of revamped character design and lovely level of attention to character movement adds something quite different. This one is simply charming. |
Mind Game (movie) | Very good | One world - surreal. This movie deals with cruelty of real live in comedic and at the same time serious tone. Can be too weird at times though. |
Mini Pato (movie) | Good | |
MM! (TV) | So-so | ...and it started out so well... |
Mob Psycho 100 (TV) | Excellent
Mob Psycho 100 II (TV) | Excellent
Mobile Suit Gundam - The Movie Trilogy | Good
Mobile Suit Gundam 00 (TV) | Very good | My breakthrough to Gundam franchise. Overall pretty good series, but numerous shortcomings keep it from excellent. |
Mobile Suit Gundam 00 Second Season (TV) | Excellent | Greatly improved on all levels: story, character development, drama, action. I'd say whatever one would rate first season -> one rating above that: Gundam 00 SS. For me it's above excellent series, can't wait for continuation. |
Mobile Suit Gundam 00 the Movie: A Wakening of the Trailblazer | Decent
Modern Magic Made Simple (TV) | Not really good
Moetan (TV) | Very good | Mo-e-ta-n... KAWAII DESU! And frequently hilarious! While this isn't quite a parody I love the inside-jokes and how they make fun of all the silly magical girl tropes. |
Momo: The Girl God of Death (TV) | So-so
Monster (TV) | Excellent
Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun (TV) | Excellent
Moonlight Lady (OAV) | Good
Moonlight Mile (TV) | Good
Moribito - Guardian of the Spirit (TV) | Good | Story is dragged. |
Motto To Love Ru (TV) | Very good | Surprisingly, yet with this franchise each season gets better and better. Motto To Love-Ru is an improvement on virtually all aspects. Individual stories are now short which solves 'dragging' feel of original, ecchi content is racked up and animation improved significantly. These changes transformed the show into a solid ecchi comedy, which is exactly what it set out to do. I enjoyed this season greatly. |
Moyashimon (TV) | Very good | AKA: Moyashimon. This one is original, and I like it. Name another anime that is set in agricultural college or where protagonist who can see microbes! Characters and story don't disappoint either. I wish there was more. |
Mt. Head (movie) | Decent
Munto (OAV) | So-so | |
Munto 2: Beyond the Walls of Time (OAV) | So-so
Musashi: The Dream of the Last Samurai (movie) | So-so
Mushi-Shi (TV) | Masterpiece
Mushi-Uta (TV) | Good | My favourite Kana Hanazawa's voice. Very gentle and touching. Mushi-Uta also has excellent music score! If only main theme wasn't used twice (at least) every single episode. Overall it is a fairly good series even though a mountain of questions are left unanswered in the end. Moreover this is a serious drama and pretty much a rather niche title: best to go in for a specific reason or by recommendation (Kana Hanazawa's character and short clip of anime itself on YouTube served as my motivation). |
My Bride is a Mermaid (TV) | Excellent | If someone tells me that certain series "gets better" it's unlikely that I'll believe it, but Seto No Hanayome actually does just that! For first few episodes series doesn't impress as it keeps recycling gags, some of which aren't even funny. But ever since they enter the school the series picks up, then it gets even better with introduction of Lunar, and finally reaches heights of "hysterically funny" in the second half of the series. Definitely worth watching for comedy fans who like over-the-top humour, just don't get discouraged if you don't like first 4-6 episodes as much. |
My Hero Academia (TV) | Excellent | Boku no Hero Academia |

My Neighbors the Yamadas (movie) | Good
My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU (TV) | Excellent | Yahari. The level of the conversations present in the show are a head and shoulder above your average lines anywhere else. Also, Hachiman's insight into social structure is a great source for comedy and drama alike and is the heart of the show. One of the most amazing dramas I've seen. I want more. Note to self: must read light novels. |

Natsume's Book of Friends (TV) | Very good
Natsume's Book of Friends (TV 2) | So-so | Everything that I liked about first season of Natsume is gone. Nyanko-sensei became a comedic relief character making him inappropriately silly... not very nice for a spirit-god or whoever he is. Human-like youkai are nearly gone as well. Just disappointing for me. |
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (movie) | Excellent
Nekomonogatari (Black) (TV) | Very good

New Fist of the North Star (OAV) | Decent
New Kimagure Orange Road: Summer's Beginning (movie) | Very good | My biggest problem with this movie is the animation. It is exactly the type of ugly you find when hand drawn style was switching to digital. This loss of animation quality is very noticeable and is, frankly, a serious disappointment. The animation of the original is beautiful so the loss of Ayukawa's gorgeousness is... well it's just sad. The characters at lest remain true to themselves, the love triangle finally gets resolved in a satisfying way, something that should have been done long time ago, and finally the overall story is pretty good. TV version ending is still my favorite though. |
Nichijō (OAV) | So-so | |
Night Shift Nurses (OAV) | Good
Nineteen 19 (OAV) | Good | Surprisingly deep and well executed drama. I am a sucker for shows like these. |
Ninja Nonsense (TV) | Good | Comedy about ninjas! Since it is episodic the short stories present are really hit or miss. Some are hilarious while others are... not. I like Ninja Nonsense's opening and closing sequences quite a bit too. |
Ninja Scroll (movie) | Very good | SEX and BLOOD! What else could you possibly want? |
Nisemonogatari (TV) | Very good

Noiseman Sound Insect (movie) | Good | I like visuals and music quite a bit, story manages to make some sense too. Nothing special about this one though. In short this movie is... lets say different. |
Now and Then, Here and There (TV) | Masterpiece | 恐がらないで。 |
Nurse Witch Komugi (special) | Very good
Nurse Witch Komugi (OAV) | Very good | Hilarious Magical Girl spin-off. Watch it even if unfamiliar with original. |
Nurse Witch Komugi-Chan Magikarte Z (OAV) | Very good | More of Komugi-chan and Nurse Witch Koyori!!! De gozaimasu wa! |
Nyaruko: Crawling with Love! (TV) | Decent
O-jii-san no Lamp (movie) | Decent
Oh My Goddess! (OAV) | So-so | I agree with Zac about Belldandy - "emotional doormat" indeed... |

One Punch Man: Road to Hero (OAV) | Good
Oni Chichi (OAV) | Very good | First one was the best. |
Only Yesterday (movie) | Decent
Oreimo (TV) | Decent | Aside from Kuroneko there is not a single side of this show I genuinely like. Horrible writing and directing... not to mention over-the-top or simply dis-likable characters. However it wasn't boring. Oreimo is bad, yet entertainingly bad. Hence I can't rate it any lower. |
Oruchuban Ebichu (TV) | Very good | Well... if you hate anything raunchy stay far, far away from this. This comedy is all about sex jokes which definitely makes Ebichu not for everyone, and also unique. Have to admit it is pretty funny. Yappari manko ga manko ga manko ga zenzen chigau n da yo! |
Otaku no Video (OAV) | Decent | I like NHK and Genshiken a great deal. Otaku are portrayed in more or less neutral light. However becoming an otaku in this OAV is treated like a downfall as characters do take it way too far. Didn't like real life reference videos either. |
Otoboku - Maidens Are Falling for Me! (TV) | Good | This series is practically built on cliches, but it's easy to watch which I can't say for many others. Crossdressing helps a bit, only that guy doesn't act like a guy at all(minus dressing rooms and washroom). Oftentimes I found myself forgetting that Mizuho is actually a guy in disguise; yes he is that feminine. I also like [obligatory] student counsil president tsundere girl above others as well as her and Mizuho's antics. Last episode is a hilarious spin-off titled "Tsunderella" no less... |
Ouran High School Host Club (TV) | Very good | I like Ouran quite a bit, but the cheerfull-transvestite father character and that inn owner got on my bad side. Other than that this is a pretty decent comedy and drama. Harem is reversed where instead of melancholic guy with bunch of hawt girls we have a melancholic Haruka with bunch of overzealous guys. Overall worth seeing. |
Outlanders (OAV) | Decent | I'll admit, dub is better choice for this one. Yes, it's really really good. |
Outlaw Star (TV) | Decent
Overlord (TV) | Excellent | Good commercial for the novels... Must read. |
Overlord II (TV) | Very good
Overlord III (TV) | ||
Pale Cocoon (OAV) | Good | |
Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt (TV) | Good
Paprika (movie) | Masterpiece | I love Satoshi Kon works for their reality vs imaginary conflicts where imaginary will invade reality at some point or we realize that imaginary and reality is intervined so deeply its impossible do differentiate anymore. Paprika is a great movie about dream world that slowly invades reality. The movie is deep, just like all Satoshi Kon's works so I had to rewatch it quite a few times to understand it fully. |
Paranoia Agent (TV) | Masterpiece | Satoshi Kon's TV series! Some say Paranoia Agent isn't as good as his movies, well I strongly disagree. I love how complicated plot is. Every episode focuses on different character, but all of them are somehow connected. Great writing as well as mesmerizing music. Just fantastic series period. |
Parasyte -the maxim- (TV) | Very good
Passage of the Stars - Birth (special) | Excellent
Patlabor 2: The Movie (movie 2) | Excellent | I had the same feeling while watching Sky Crawlers. Both movies are intelligent but they both, at least for me, require more than one viewing to fully appreciate them (and I can't pinpoint to the best part; "the whole is greater than the sum of it's parts" - very true indeed). |
Patlabor The Mobile Police (OAV 1/1988) | Good
Patlabor WXIII (movie 3) | Very good
Patlabor: The Movie (movie 1) | Good
Peace-Hame! (OAV) | Very good
Perfect Blue (movie) | Excellent
Pet Shop of Horrors (TV) | Bad
Phantom ~Requiem for the Phantom~ (TV) | Very good | Pretty good beginning, outstanding middle, not-as-good finale (Lolwut high-school?). Overall though Requiem for the Phantom is very much worth picking up. Oh and the music is absolutely fascinating (well, for the most part... OST FTW!). |
Ping Pong (TV) | Good | |
Ping Pong Club (TV) | Excellent | This one is mostly funny, and often quite hilarious, ecchi comedy. Boobies and nudity is awzm of course but the series' humour is sometimes either gross or just wrong. The series has few relatively longer arcs and does have an overall progress (kinda) but most of the series is episodic. This is a South Park of anime, minus satiric look on life, so if you like that kind of humour (and can bear through some plainly unsightly situations and a few weaker half-episodes) Ping Pong Club should be watched. |
A Place Further Than the Universe (TV) | Excellent
(The) Place Promised in Our Early Days (movie) | Excellent
Planetes (TV) | Very good
Please Teacher! (TV) | Very good | Great, unconventional love story about an alien teacher and a student. I like the story where characters advance their relations great deal and overcome many obstacles, including their own uncertaincy. If not the absolutely ridiculous plot twist I'd rate it higher. Despite that its a rich drama with realistic characters making it worth seeing for drama & romance fans. |
Please Teacher! (OAV) | Very good | Whether they want it or not Kei and Mizuho spice up their relationship a bit, thanks to their friends of course. Good additional episode to Please Teacher!. |
Please tell me! Galko-chan (TV) | Very good
Please Twins! (TV) | Very good | I like Please Twins! a little more than Teacher. Even though characters don't get as far in their relationship and Karen gets unnecessary character shift at the end story is well paced with drama being as good as in Teacher. There is quite a bit of nudity and teasing but it's not nearly enough... and no sex scenes either which is a letdown compared to previous season. *sad face* |
Please Twins! (OAV) | Very good | Good extra episode to Twins!. Progresses Miina & Maiku relationship a bit and seemingly solves "obsessive sister" complex of Karen. |
(The) Pollinic Girls Attack!: The Animation (OAV) | Very good | Best allergy ever. |
Pom Poko (movie) | Decent
Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea (movie) | Weak | Ponyo off the cliff. *snore* By far |
Pop Team Epic (TV) | Good | |
Popotan (TV) | Very good | I don't mind nudity at all, if anything I like it. Which means nudity is never a distraction, even if it's not necessary for the plot. Thanks to that mindset I watched Popotan for the story, yes story. This title is cute and mostly innocent for its duration, while during last few episodes it delves into values of the family and the place one can call home, which shows solid drama as well. I like Popotan a lot, which is, contrary to perception of many, is not an ecchi show. It's rating is fully deserved. |
Porco Rosso (movie) | Good | Classic movie about bewitched flight ace bounty hunter. The only thing I didn't like is that the spell just gets resolved by itself making me wonder why did they made him a pig in first place. "To stand out" would be my guess. |
(Le) Portrait de Petite Cossette (OAV) | Weak
Potemayo (TV) | Excellent | I'll say right away I don't find Potemayos all that endearing, though I still like them. But what really made this series great wasn't cuteness, it's teh Comedy!!! Absolutely hilarious! One of the biggest laughs I had. I also love that Ayako Kawasumi is starring here, as well as Rie Kugimiya (whose trademark childish supah cute voice(to the MAX!) with emotionless character is hilarious of and by itself), Eri Kitamura and Kikuko Inoue, latter's "narrator" voice is absolutely irreplaceable. |
Princess 69 (OAV) | Not really good | Too violent or simply wrong... definitely not everyone can stomach this. |
Princess Lover! (TV) | Decent | Harem with your standard girl set-up and high quality animation. It mixes serious and silly content in a very rough way making it goofy in one scene and over-dramatized in the other. |
Princess Mononoke (movie) | Masterpiece
Princess Tutu (TV) | Excellent
Project A-ko (movie) | Not really good
Psycho-Pass (TV) | Very good
Puella Magi Madoka Magica (TV) | Excellent
Pumpkin Scissors (TV) | So-so
Puni Puni Poemy (OAV) | Decent | Crazy Excel Saga spin-off. Love hentai parodies... not much else, sadly. |
Puss n' Boots Around the World (movie) | Excellent | A.K.A. Puss-in-Boots: Travels Around the World in 80 Days. I watched it as a child countless times and even now I can't help but love this movie. Extremely well-done movie for kids. |
Queen's Blade 2: The Evil Eye (TV) | Very good | Great sequel! I like it for pretty much the same reasons as the first season, with outstanding opening and all three variations of closing sequences. Watched 'em every time :P. I should also mention Queen's Blade BluRay specials. While they have a three-digit-yen budget they are generally funny. My personal favourite is #9 (of 12) with Nowa and Combat Instructor Alleyne. I always suspected there was something between them... now I know for sure! |
Queen's Blade Rebellion Premium Visual Book (OAV) | So-so
Queen's Blade: Beautiful Warriors (OAV) | Very good | To be honest I was very concerned whether Queen's Blade can continue strong. But as it turned out all of that concern was for nothing. This short sequel wraps up TV series ending with it's excellent story-writing, as always. Second episode in particular, one that is focusing on combat instructor Alleyne and Nowa, is simply amazing, an episode easily deserving a masterpiece rating. If you love Queen's Blade - this is a must watch, if not, you probably shouldn't be reading comments on third installation... |
Queen's Blade: Rebellion (TV) | So-so | What made original so good is the keen sense of balance. Queen's Blade had excellent overall feel of progression and story while all the nudity and such never felt forced. That balance is what elevated the series above other drivel (like Seikon no Qwaser). Once that fragile balance was tampered with however the entire structure collapsed into a messy disgrace of storytelling and stereotype pandering. Disjointed character paths and motivations, weak battles and simply non-involving story is what we have now. In essence, everything that made the original good is gone. Rebellion has turned out to be a sad loss for anime community. |
Queen's Blade: The Exiled Virgin (TV) | Very good | I know, it's hard to convince anyone that this T&A action anime has a fairly decent story, but it does. Animation is pretty good too and was improved, uncensored, and released in native HD on the final BluRay version. I remember I did not like the first episode of QB when it first aired in Japan, but now after I gave it another chance I genuinely enjoyed it. I also agree about music - its good, very much so. This is mostly a fanservice show with very little ecchi. Also, if compared to Ikki Tousen, Queen's Blade focuses on the story much more than fanservice, (in fact I would dare to say that story and characters is the heart of this show) while IT doesn't have and doesn't try to have a coherent narrative and just provides for our basic needs. |
Quiz Magic Academy (OAV) | Decent
(The) Qwaser of Stigmata (TV) | Decent
(The) Qwaser of Stigmata: Portrait of the Empress (OAV) | So-so
R.O.D -The TV- | Decent | Huge letdown compared to OVA. I like the beginning character development but it eventually shows its true colours of being another horribly dragged story, which destroys this series. If you really like OVA - leave it be. Some sequels aren't meant to be good and it's best to remember franchise for its good parts only. |
Ranma ½ OAV | Decent | Knowing Rumiko Takahashi's works I think having seen this OAV means I've seen all Ranma half. |
Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dreaming Girl (movie) | Masterpiece | Gets a bit melodramatic in this movie, but the ratings is very much earned. |
Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai (TV) | Masterpiece | Considering I love good banter more than anything it comes as no surprise that I love this show. |
Re: Cutie Honey (OAV) | Decent
Read or Die (OAV) | Excellent | X-men in Japan. |
REC (TV) | Excellent | Love this short romance. Not being set in highschool is great + characters are ready for more mature relationship, with healthy fights and misunderstandings along the way. |
Record of Lodoss War (OAV) | Decent | I like how the "Staff of Domination" has naked women engraved on it... Get it? |
Redline (movie) | Excellent
Revolutionary Girl Utena (TV) | Decent
Revolutionary Girl Utena: The Movie | Excellent
Rideback (TV) | Bad | It started out very good, with interesting premise, good action and high production values. However story just goes downhill more and more with uplifting but absolutely ridiculous ending. |
Riding Bean (OAV) | So-so
RIN - Daughters of Mnemosyne (TV) | Good | Yuri sex in every episode! Be warned - this title has extreme violence and torture as well! Mamiko Noto as a sexy protagonist Rin and Rie Kugimiya as loli sidekick Mimi should be enough for some of us to check this one out. I like story as well, with a twist of passing decades through episodes. Only ending is a bit confusing to me bringing it down from excellent. |
Rizelmine (TV) | Very good | Rizelmine is mature title for a bunch of reasons that should not be mentioned... I do like it a lot though, and story actually has conclusive ending and doesn't wallow in chiches along the way. I also love that Rie Kugimiya is voicing Rizel in her cute childish voice as well as OP and two ED sequences. |
Rocket Girls (TV) | Very good | Very cute and surprisingly mature title. |
Rosario + Vampire (TV) | So-so | It has a rather interesting beginning but quickly becomes general episodic fanservice fest (with horrible animation brought to you by Gonzo, no less...). |
Royal Space Force - The Wings of Honnêamise (movie) | So-so
Rozen Maiden (TV) | Good | |
Rozen Maiden: Detective Kun-Kun (special) | So-so
Rozen Maiden: Ouvertüre (special) | Very good | Important side story to Rozen Maiden: Träumend, it takes place somewhere between episode 6 and 7 and I think should be watched between those episodes. |
Rozen Maiden: Träumend (TV) | Very good | Now I understand why Suiseiseki won Saimoe 2006. Kawaii, desu! |
Rumbling Hearts (TV) | Excellent
Rurouni Kenshin: Trust & Betrayal (OAV) | Masterpiece
Ryo (movie) | So-so | |
Ryōjoku Family Restaurant Chōkyō Menu (OAV) | Very good | One of the best and most consistent animations in porno. Lovely character design as well. |
SaiKano: Another Love Song (OAV) | So-so
Sailor Moon (TV) | Excellent | I grew up watching this. Sailor Moon was my first anime and I am very grateful that I've seen it. It taught teenager-me the purity of love and value of friends. I think it is |
Sailor Moon R (TV) | Very good
Sailor Moon R: The Movie | Excellent | I have to agree with the review of this movie here at ANN. This movie is perfect for intrducing someone to Sailor Moon franchise. It has everything that makes this epic saga so good: friendship, sacrifices, pure feelings, love, misguided villan who needs to be redeemed and, of course, naked transformation sequences :D. Fans should love this one, and non fans just might get interested in the Sailor Moon franchise. |
Sailor Moon S (TV) | Excellent
Sailor Moon S: The Movie | Very good | Who said that Luna does not know love? Ok maybe she didn't but now she does! This movie is pretty much dedicated to Luna fans. |
Sailor Moon Sailor Stars (TV) | Masterpiece | Ultimate last enemy appears and its up to Sailor Senshi and those gender-switching guys to protect the Earth. Worthy ending to a great series where Usagi brings victory in |
Sailor Moon SuperS (TV) | Very good
Sailor Moon SuperS (special) | Good
Sailor Moon SuperS Plus - Ami's First Love (special) | Very good | Rival=Enemy=Victory... gotta love Ami's logic. |
Sailor Moon SuperS: The Movie | Excellent | Another awesome Sailor Moon movie. I like that Sailor Moon franchise doesn't recycle endings. Heroes don't have to die every time as well as villans might be rescued. Of course everyone's effort is requred to defeat the villan but the way it is done is different everytime. Ah and I love that insert song, sing along with me:
Hora ne mimi sumaseba
Nante amai MERODII
San-ji no yousei boku o yonde iru yo
Nemutta DOA o tatake
Tonde okite isoge
Okashi no kuni e fune ni notte iku yo... |
Saki (TV) | Very good | |
Sakura Wars (TV) | So-so | |
Salaryman Kintaro (TV) | Good
Samurai 7 (TV) | Decent | |
Samurai Champloo (TV) | Excellent | Hip-hop and Samurai? Moar please! Episodic series done right. Easily one of the best samurai shows I've seen with great characters and writing. |
Samurai Harem (TV) | Decent | It's actually pretty good untill it tries to come up with an ending, entering some [serious] drama... and horribly failing at it. |
Sayonara Zetsubou-sensei (TV) | Very good | I really like this one. SHAFT did great coming up with all the references to other anime and creating wide cast of easily recognizable and distinct characters. Visually SZS is no worse than any other of the SHAFT's works and humor is very good too. May be too crazy for some people. |
School Days (TV) | Masterpiece | Best drama ever. Set in high school it takes harem genre and flips it upside-down and inside-out. Imagine any harem set-up brought to the real life world, where male lead doesn't "wait" or is "scared" or "old-fashioned" or whatever excuse other series feed us. Male protagonist Makoto is not perfect either. He is a wimpy, inconsiderate and selfish womanizer who will sleep with any girl just for thrills and won't care about their feelings one bit. Doesn't sound like a good guy right? But wait! Other characters are just as awesome; they are insecure, weak, just as selfish and confused teenagers drenched in hormones. Just where this mess of a harem can lead is up to you, dear reader, to find out. If you care about harems at all, or love drama - School Days is a MUST see! |
School Days: Magical Heart Kokoro-chan (OAV) | Very good | Funny spin-off on School Days using all characters from original series. Also don't miss Valentine Days OVA episode as it's spin-off/side story is quite hilarious. |
School Days: Valentine Days (OAV) | Very good
School Rumble (TV) | Excellent | One of the best comedies ever made. Absolutely hilarious characters who keep getting in improbable situations and repeatedly fail to confess. Not to mention all the misunderstandings and it's consequences. |
School Rumble Sangakki (OAV) | Decent | Horrible ending to otherwise great series. |
School Rumble: 2nd Semester (TV) | Very good | More of School Rumble! Gotta love first arc where they play war and shoot each other to death. Again, one of the best comedies ever. |
School Rumble: Extra Class (OAV) | Excellent | Onsen episode in its full beauty. |
School-Live! (TV) | Good
Scrapped Princess (TV) | Very good | Pretty good series overall. Pacifica is surprisingly interesting character that keeps this series going. I didn't like that Scrapped Princess makes a sudden turn to sci-fi half way through. Ending was somewhat cheezy but still satisfying. |
Scum's Wish (TV) | Excellent | Kuzu no Honkai. Very weird feeling after watching it. The story just seems unfinished, none of the men get their resolutions, and I could use more of Minagawa. |
(The) Secret World of Arrietty (movie) | Good
Seraph of the End: Vampire Reign (TV) | Very good
Servant × Service (TV) | Very good
Seto no Hanayome (OAV) | Very good | Pretty good but not quite at the level of the best episodes of original series. |
Sexfriend (OAV) | Very good | Hell, my high school wasn't anything like that! Which is kind of sad. Pretty good story and music. |
Shakugan no Shana (TV) | Very good | Girls with swords and magic, talking accesories and undead people. I was recommended this series because I liked FS/N and even though they are somewhat similar the differences are high too. I would say that Shana is a weaker version of Fate-Stay/Night. Nevertheless I enjoyed Shana quite a bit. Plenty of action and villans, artefacts are getting picked up by main characters to be used for their advantage and solid writing all make Shana worth seeing. |
Shakugan no Shana (movie) | So-so
Shakugan no Shana S (OAV) | Good
Shakugan no Shana Second (TV) | Good | Not as good as first season. Second tries to enter drama & romance but doesn't do it very well. The problem is that some episodes could be considered as fillers, since relationships don't progress at all untill latter third of the season. Not enough action too. At least Yuuji learns how to be a capable fighter and that leaves more potential for future seasons than original Shana had. |
Shakugan no Shana SP: Koi to Onsen no Kōgai Gakushū! (OAV) | Good
Shakugan no Shana-tan (OAV) | Decent
Shakugan no Shana-tan Returns (OAV) | Decent
She and Her Cat (OAV) | Decent
She, The Ultimate Weapon (TV) | Very good | For some reason every side story left a greater impact on me than the main story. The series has quite a few masterpiece level scenes and I even cried once: the whole Akemi dying scene; but sadly I couldn't connect to main characters as much. Nevertheless I am very glad I watched Saikano. Characters literally shed buckets of tears in this one, more than in any other anime I've seen. |
Shigofumi - Letters from the Departed (TV) | So-so
Shigurui: Death Frenzy (TV) | Excellent | Brutal, yet gorgeous Edo Era of Japan drama. MADHOUSE magic in it's full glory! I'd love to see a sequel. |
Shiki (TV) | Very good | I commend the author for killing off so many characters, if only some of their death didn't feel too "convenient" for the plot. Last 1/3rd of this is truly epic. |
Shining Hearts (TV) | Bad
Shirobako (TV) | Excellent
Shōjo Sect - Innocent Lovers (OAV) | Decent
Shokugeki no Soma: Shūgetsu no Meguriai (special) | Good
Shokugeki no Soma: Tōtsuki Jūkketsu (OAV) | Good
Shuffle! (TV) | Decent | I had this one rated "weak" for a looong time. Now that I looked at it again I don't find it "that" bad. While it does make one want to poke his eyes out during the middle, the beginning and ending of Shuffle! do deliver some entertainment. "Decent" is much more appropriate rating. |
Shugo Chara! (TV) | Excellent | When it comes to magical girl genre there are only few epics (widely popular long running series). Sailor Moon(1992-1997) was 'first coming' that really grabbed masses and brought them to anime, then we had another excellent gem which is Cardcaptor Sakura(1998-2000) and finally we have a modern look at the genre with Shugo Chara!(2007 and ongoing). Well... its great! Animation and art practically scream 'modern' + I really love character design - it's soo lovely! Amu Himamori is an all-round likable character who gives off "cool and spicy" image but in reality just wants to be a normal girl who can openly express herself. Amu, as well as other characters, is simply looking for her true self and wants to realize her dreams. That desire resonates in all of us, which makes this series great not only for children, but for teenagers and adults alike. Story is logical and very involving with a healthy dose of unexpected plot twists. Also Ikuto is the coolest bad guy ever! He teases our adorable Amu-chan soo much I love it! Fans of genre should be overjoyed and non-fans just might get interested. Shugo Chara! represents 'traditional' Magical Girl genre at it's best, and as it's meant to be. Note to self: try to skip episodes 7-10, 12, 14-20, 34-37 and 49-51 when re-watching |
A Silent Voice (movie) | Excellent
Silver Spoon (TV) | Very good
Silver Spoon (TV 2) | Excellent
Skip Beat! (TV) | Excellent | KYOUKO!!! Love this girl and her slow rise to power for VENGEANCE! Soo involving I had to marathon through it in one day. Eight hours of pure watch time even though I skipped OP and ED takes dedication. After it was done... where the hell is second season? I am now up to date with manga. I'd say it's definitely worth reading if one likes anime. Manga has some amazing stuff in it and the best thing there is no end in sight! I'll read any amount of it for as long as I love it. |
(The) Sky Crawlers (movie) | Excellent
Sola (TV) | Weak | Stereotypical and boring characters (Mamiko Noto's voice doesn't match her character); inconsistent, below-average or plain lazy animation; joke attempts almost as bad as in Suzuka(only in Suzuka they are actually funny because they are so lazy); well, at least story that starts like any other average series "gets better" right? WRONG!!! Also whats up with characters who are "hundreds years old", yet still have as much brains as your average not-so-brilliant teenager. |
Sono Hanabira ni Kuchizuke o - Anata to Koibito Tsunagi (OAV) | Very good | Cute, happy, gentle and very sweet. Best yuri ova I've seen. I'd say this is beyond pornography - now it's erotica, like Virgin Night. Has gorgeous animation as well. |
Sora no Manimani (TV) | Not really good | If you like astronomy - this series is godsent for you. Otherwise, watch it only if you have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING better to do. I finally see the flaw in series like these. They overuse same jokes(situations) over and over again, by the end losing any bit's of originality they might have had. |
Soul Eater (TV) | Good | Falls apart half way through. Disappointing. |
(The) SoulTaker (TV) | Not really good
Sound of the Sky (TV) | Decent
Sound! Euphonium (TV) | Excellent | Hibike! |
(The) Sovereign Carmel-san (special) | Decent
Space Pirate Captain Herlock The Endless Odyssey (OAV) | Weak | I haven't seen any of Captain Herlock franchise before, but this OAV stands by itself pretty well. I can't help but note quite a few issues with this one though. Herlock assembles his crew to fight the 'new enemy', yet when he gets to the moon his reply is: "kotowaru"([I] refuse) to fight with the said enemy! Also, when Kei got shot she seemingly dies and has to be defibrillated... which is done by putting 'paddles' on her breasts! I am not a doctor but even I know that's a very very wrong way to do it. Fans were probably happy to see this OAV, but for those who are not familiar with Herlock - you are not missing anything. |
Spice and Wolf (TV) | Masterpiece | Note to self: must read light novel. |
Spice and Wolf II (TV) | Masterpiece
Spirited Away (movie) | Excellent
Spriggan (movie) | So-so
Squid Girl (TV) | Very good
Squid Girl Season 2 (TV) | Very good
Star Blazers 2199 (TV) | Very good | Space Battleship Yamato 2199 |
Starship Operators (TV) | Decent
Steamboy (movie) | Very good | It wants to be more. But what we have is still good with high quality animation and well written story. I enjoyed it greatly. |
Steins;Gate (TV) | Very good
Strawberry Marshmallow (TV) | Excellent | I can't really pin point what makes this so hilarious. Maybe it's grade schoolers day to day life, or Nobue-nee's melancholy, or Miu's offences followed by insta-hit-facedown-on-the-floor result. Very good comedy, and don't forget about the OVAs. |
Strawberry Marshmallow (OAV) | Very good
Strawberry Marshmallow Encore (OAV) | Excellent
Strawberry Panic! (TV) | Very good | Flawed, but cute and relaxing. Ending and a few late episodes is what really brings this series up to it's current rating. |
Stretta The Animation (OAV) | Excellent | Part of the saga, part of the legend. |
Strike Witches (OAV) | So-so
Strike Witches (TV) | Good
Stringendo & Accelerando Ultimatum - Sera (OAV) | Excellent | This is one of the few hentai titles I've rated excellent. The 'story' is very interesting and rather fresh, then there is above average animation and awesome art. I even called this a "masterpiece of porn". It simply works on so many levels... |
Stringendo - Angel-tachi no Private Lesson (OAV) | Very good | 12 episodes. No really, 12 GODDAMN EPISODES FOR A PORNO!!!! Took 6 years to animate. |
Student Council's Discretion (TV) | So-so | Mo~kyu! |
Summer Wars (movie) | Good | Did not impress on any level. |
(The) Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love? (movie) | Excellent | "They don't make 'em like they used to no more" very true indeed. I had no knowledge about Macross franchise prior to watching this movie, now I've seen pretty much everything. I think DYRL is more than worth seeing as a stand alone sci-fi love story. Have to praise the writing and especially soundtrack (with insert songs!). |
(The) Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Flash Back 2012 (OAV) | Good
(The) Supreme Hecate-tan (OAV) | Decent
Survival Game Club! (TV) | Very good
Suzuka (TV) | Very good | There are plenty of things to dislike about Suzuka, like low budget lazy animation, the drama queen Suzuka herself, sub-par voiceacting or laughable attempts at humour; and at the same time I [more or less] like the story and drama. Suzuka is so deep in her tsundere character it gets old fast, and by the middle of the series I just wanted her to disappear... she is sooo annoying, one second she agrees another she is all pissy. I do like Yamato Akitsuki though. He is inconsiderate and lacks confidence but he isn't whimpy and acts like a man. Story is what's really keeping it's viewers though. I like that Suzuka starts with usual character set up like "boy meets girl" only boy soon realizes his feelings, confesses and... gets rejected! Now that's something you don't see often in anime. Rejection discourages him of course but he doesn't give up and, after quite a bit of time and drama, prevails. Cheers? |
Sweet Blue Flowers (TV) | Very good | Not a fan of Shoujo-ai but this one is good, damn good actually. I was somewhat sceptic when starting this series but laid back flow with interesting characters and story drew me in. Aoi Hana focuses heavily on romance and drama which is just perfect for my tastes. Should not be missed by shoujo-ai fans. |
Sword Art Online (TV) | Decent | The biggest shortcoming of SAO is that it allowed the viewers to lose the interest in it. The so promising first few episodes were devastated by the inconsequential narrative, weak focus on the main storyline and by extent unremarkable characters. What pains me the most is that this show had a great deal of potential if only it was handed to the competent staff. Living together as husband and wife, for example, has not been done anywhere else aside from Clannad. The emotional attachment that was meant to be built as the series went on simply did not happen. The fact I couldn't empathize with the characters was a real deal breaker (I don't even want to touch on the plot holes here). What we have now it simply a decent show. It is still worth your time but I would not expect greatness from it. Sword Art Online had much more potential than was realized. |
Sword Art Online II (TV) | Decent
Sword of the Stranger (movie) | Very good | I really love how fights are done in this movie - beatiful. Story is nothing special though. "Popcorn movie" indeed. |
Taisho Baseball Girls (TV) | Very good
Tales from Earthsea (movie) | Bad
Tales of Symphonia the Animation (OAV) | Good | The most notable part of this series is.... Opening song of course! ALMATERIA! w00t! |
Tales of Vesperia: The First Strike (movie) | Decent | Twins! |
(The) Tales Trilogy (OAV) | Good | Best old-school ecchi (though more like soft-core porn) title I've seen, not to mention how hilarious it is. Titillation is BY FAR the best episode - I liked all stories a lot (excellent). Misbehaviour is pretty good as well, especially "part-time nurse" story. Too bad I can't say anything praise worthy about Scintillation. Also, don't skip ending sequences - lyrics and images are hilarious. Overall this reminded me of Colorful, only more explicit and "made in early 90-es". |
Tari Tari (TV) | Very good
(The) Tatami Galaxy (TV) | Excellent
Tekkonkinkreet (movie) | Very good
Tenchi Muyo! (OAV 1/1992) | Good
Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki (OAV 2/1994) | So-so
Tenchi Muyo! The Night Before The Carnival (OAV) | So-so
Tenshi na Konamaiki (TV) | Good
Thermae Romae (TV) | Good
This Ugly Yet Beautiful World (TV) | Good | Well... it's better than Mahoromatic. Though I'd still give it "decent" if not for absolutely brilliant episode 3 and first half of episode 4. I felt "Masterpiece" level of quality and storytelling during those episodes, but the series ultimately didn't live up to it's incredibly strong start. |
Time of Eve (ONA) | Decent
Time of Eve (movie) | Decent
To Heart (TV) | Very good | I love character design and old-school quality animation of To Heart. In close-up shots the eyes and hair are exceptionally detailed making girls look absolutely gorgeous especially Akari (she is soooo cute!). In my anime viewing experience I've seen plenty of "childhood friend" archetypes so I think it means something when I say that Akari one of the best developed and genuinely interesting characters. The series does a wonderful job portraying main characters relationship giving it a nearly authentic feeling. Ayako Kawasumi's heartwarming performance makes Akari even more special. Kawasumi also sings the ending credits song which I absolutely love, and even watched every single episode. Music does very good job on setting the mood and I like the instruments composer used. Overall I find To Heart to be an involving, touching drama/romance; one of the better titles in the slice of life genre. To Heart Mini episodes are very sweet as well, don't miss 'em. Best of cell shade animation. |
To Love Ru: Darkness (TV) | Excellent | Gets better and better. Dying for more. |
To Love-Ru (TV) | So-so | |
To Love-Ru (OAV) | Good | |
To Love-Ru -Trouble- Darkness (OAV) | Excellent
To Love-Ru -Trouble- Darkness (OAV 2) | Excellent
Toaru Kagaku no Railgun (OAV) | So-so
Tohai Densetu Akagi -Yamini Maiorita Tensai- (TV) | Very good
Tokyo Godfathers (movie) | Very good
Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 (TV) | Good | It could've been so much better but as many other titles never gets to higher levels of brilliance. Because Mirai is so annoying I couldn't connect to her either, and therefore much of drama didn't impress. |
Tokyo Marble Chocolate (OAV) | Good
Toradora! (TV) | Masterpiece
Toward the Terra (TV) | Good
(The) Tower of Druaga: The Aegis of Uruk (TV) | Good | Comedy keeps this anime MMO preview afloat. Too bad second season looses first's best points, so I never finished it. |
Trava (OAV) | So-so | |
Trigun (TV) | So-so | |
True Tears (TV) | Very good | Inconventional writing, quality animation, interesting characters and good drama make True Tears an enjoyable series. I felt there was more potential which never got realized. Nevertheless what we have is still good and I would easily recommend this title to any drama x romance fan. |
(The) Twelve Kingdoms (TV) | Excellent | Twelve Kingdoms is a slow series to get into. I hated the first three episodes, but stuck with it and it proved to be a fairly good series by the end of the first chapter (episode fourteen). But the quality of storytelling kept getting better and by the end of Taiki's (black Kirin of the Tai Kingdom) chapter I simply couldn't stop watching. And then the series reached the "OMFG AWZM" level of excellence starting from episode 21. I especially love the princess of Hou story: the things she goes through, her thoughts and actions, particularly her RAGE(!!!) and unwillingness to accept her fault, the lessons she learns and changes she undergoes is an absolute masterpiece of storytelling. The series manages an absolutely outstanding finale in episode 39, while episode 40 provides a great wrap up. Last few episodes enter another "flashback" but don't provide even mildly satisfactory ending ("flashback" is out of order compared to the novel releases anyway). Overall, Twelve Kingdoms is a great series, it may be slow to get into, but those with patience who value good story and characters will undoubtedly be rewarded. I just wish last two novels were animated as well... |
Uchū Senkan Yamato 2199: Hoshi-Meguru Hakobune (movie) | Very good
Ultimate Teacher (OAV) | Weak
Utawarerumono (TV) | Decent
Utawarerumono (OAV) | Decent | Episodes one and two are meh, third one though is hilarious! I like Touka the most so her episode was much appreciated: her cute and impressive sides are shown in their full glory. |
Valvrave the Liberator (TV) | Good | Needs more signing in my legend of the galactic gundam macross geass guilty neon genesis vampire power ranger high school musical. The master train-wreck of writing. |
Vampire Hunter D (OAV) | Decent | Title is self-explanatory. Formula is simple: average story, average animation, lots of senseless violence, vampires, nudity and of course fight scenes. An OK movie I'd say, not worth rewatching. |
Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust (movie) | Excellent | Second movie is much, much better. Plenty of awesome action as well as inriguing story and characters make Bloodlust a very enjoyable movie. I love the drama in this one as well, and I can see why some people would rate a masterpiece. |
Vampire Knight (TV) | Decent | You can tell that this is a shoujo series by the amount of hugging Yui Horie recieves. I mean both her love interests hug her nearly every episode. I'd watch second season... if only first one didn't put me to sleep every other minute. |
Vampire Princess Miyu (OAV) | Weak
Vanquished Queens (OAV) | So-so
Video Girl Ai (OAV) | So-so | It starts really interesting. Then gets into a love triange, some drama and... stupid ending ruins it all. |
Viper GTS (OAV) | Very good | Nice cars! |
(The) Vision of Escaflowne (TV) | So-so | By the end of it I got fed up with Hitomi. She is boring and very annoying. With war and all going around the only thing she really cares about is her male harem, what they think of her and who she likes better and so on. It's like the whole world revolves around her... Barely finished it. Also: fate fate fate. |
Voices of a Distant Star (OAV) | Not really good | "It will now take eight(!) years for my e-mail to reach her". Not Really Good. |
Wagnaria!! (TV) | Good | Working!! |
Wagnaria!!2 (TV) | Very good
Wagnaria!!3 (TV) | Excellent
Walkure Romanze (TV) | Decent
Wandaba Style (TV) | Decent | Bought it on ADV sale. Very good fluff anime, lighthearted and funny it makes a good watch on those lazy days. |
Wandering Son (TV) | Excellent | Wow! Goddammit wow! Hourou Musuko is an art. The directing, the art, the music, the animation... Everything blends together and creates something incredible, something special; another great example for "the whole is greater than the sum of it's parts" saying. Hourou Musuko brings up and masterfully explores the realities of gender identity and social standards for it. The story is simply beautiful with outstanding characterization. Anime, on a whole, certainly has some gems: unique, gorgeous series which can deeply affect the viewer and Wandering Son is no doubt one of them. |
Wasurenagumo (movie) | Good | It has a surprise ending. |
WATAMOTE (TV) | Good | Tomoko's voice acting is beyond exemplary. I mean Japanese VA's in their vast majority are amazing anyway but this is exceptional. On a scale from one to ten she, is Eleven! I love her voice-acting. |
Welcome to the NHK (TV) | Very good | Awesome look at hikikomori and otaku in general. I really like this series and I'd rate it excellent but lead characters never got together... and the guy gets cured by the most logical and mundane reason. Worth seeing. |
Welcome to THE SPACE SHOW (movie) | So-so
When They Cry - Higurashi (TV) | Masterpiece | Before I've seen Higurashi I didn't think anime can be this screwed up scary. Chained to my monitor, shocked frozen, I watched as much as I could in one sitting. Complex story, suspense and brutal violence made it awesome. Best anime horror I've seen (there aren't many of them anyway). |
When They Cry - Kai (TV) | Excellent
When They Cry - Rei (OAV) | Very good
Whisper of the Heart (movie) | Decent | Not the best of Ghibli movies. Still it can be touching, as we watch main heroine search for her path in life and learning that not everything is easy. |
(The) Wind Rises (movie) | Excellent
Wind: A Breath of Heart (OAV) | Weak
Wolf and the Amber-colored Melancholy (OAV) | Excellent
Wolf Children (movie) | Good
Words Worth (OAV) | Very good | This is how all hentai should be. Involving story with good balance of serious and funny, cute/pretty/sexy female characters of "wide selection", quality 'action' scenes, cell animation of mid-late 90es and lets not forget the violence and blood! Words Worth doesn't come together as well as I wish it did but the sum of it's parts is close to being perfect. |
World Conquest Zvezda Plot (TV) | Good
W~Wish (TV) | So-so | |
Xam'd: Lost Memories (ONA) | Not really good
Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches (TV) | Excellent
Yamada-kun to 7-nin no Majo (OAV) | Excellent
Yawara! A Fashionable Judo Girl (TV) | Excellent | Yawara! Not only one of the best old-school anime conceived it is also a gem of storytelling and character creation. Yawara universe is incredibly immerse as every single character comes alive thanks to distinct design and unique personalities. However being a shoujo dramedy/romance combo also comes with the baggage of Unresolved Sexual Tensions being quite angsty as alpha couple suffers very typical shoujo tropes which brought me some pain. Despite that Yawara is an excellent series. The main heroine is immediately likable and incredibly cute, the comedy is funny and is quite hilarious at times, the general animation is quite good as well while Judo matches shine with its beautiful fluid motion. Lastly, all the drama is incredibly effective as I grew to love the characters more and more with every passing episode. An outstanding shoujo sports drama no doubt. |
Yawara! Soreyuke Koshinuke Kids!! (movie) | Good
Yawara! Special - Zutto Kimi no Koto ga | Very good | Watching this back to back to TV series has left me quite disappointed. This movie provides a decent resolution but the way we get there and the fact there was no "happily ever after" scene of any sorts left me rather unsatisfied. "Sudden reassignment to [insert your country here]" trope is overly melodramatic and was totally unnecessary. If the story of the TV series gets and 'excellent' this underwhelming ending deserves 'decent' at best. |
Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou (OAV) | So-so
Yona of the Dawn (TV) | Excellent | Note to self: read manga. |
Yosuga no Sora - In solitude where we are least alone (TV) | So-so
You're Under Arrest (OAV) | Good | Lighthearted look at everyday police work. If anything, worth seeing to get a general idea of this classic franchise. |
Younger Sister Juice (OAV) | Very good
Your Lie in April (TV) | Excellent | Shigatsu wa kimi no uso. Episode 4 is an 11/10. Ending is a perfect 10. It does get overbearing at times, often misusing the dramatic emphasis, and with the ever present and at times annoying soundtrack (not classic pieces themselves). Will need to re-watch this... after I calm down and allow myself to love this show once again. |
your name. (movie) | Masterpiece
Yowamushi Pedal (TV) | Very good
Yuruyuri - Happy Go Lily (TV) | Decent
Zipang (TV) | Good | The only thing I have to say is: "whats up with huge ears?". |
Zoku Sayonara Zetsubou-sensei (TV) | Decent | Not as good as first season. Still watchable but SHAFT went all random on this one... pushing those like me away. |
Zone of the Enders (TV) | Not really good | Watched this on The Anime Network back when I was subscribed to it and thought all anime is good... |
Only series I've seen quite a bit of before giving up or losing interest appear here.

Honey and Clover (TV) | When I looked at H&C comedy, drama, romance genres and the fact that this series was in top 50 I thought: "This should be Awesome!!!". The very first five minutes of the first episode, however, managed to destroy my expectations completely... Comedy reeks of slapstick, later on it's obvious that plot doesn't want to move anywhere, characters somehow manage to be dis-likable... and then there is Hagu. Hagu is supposed to be university student yet she looks like 12 year old and what's worse - acts like a 12 year old, lacking any brains (including, but not limiting to, common sense). I am sorry people, but having brains of an infant when characters are 20+ years old is not cute. Takumi is an idiot too: Make a decision already! I somehow dragged myself to episode nine, dropping for now. Huge disappointment.
