To me, the most important part of Macross 0 was getting more Roy Fokker.

I am looking forward to watching Macross Zero. For years, it's been my most-anticipated Macross entry I haven't seen. I remember it being released alongside the [vastly underappreciated and nearly forgotten] Yukikaze. It never looked as good as Yukikaze in previews, but the idea of a prequel Macross story with a serious tone and art style was always a very appealing concept to me.

I liked this one. My favorite after Plus, but admittedly nowhere near as good, but I'll take it! I didn't care for 7 or much of Macross outside my nostalgia for Robotech.

Can I buy it dubbed on blu ray now, or it it only streaming?

Shrug.....!! For me Macross is Frontier, Plus and Delta. Zero isn't horrible but it falls well below the others in quality.

You can buy it on blu-ray, but it’s sub only.

An official English blu ray or the Japanese version?

It's an English Bluray. It was just released.

I'd always think that Zero was "what if we do another Plus, but with less budget?".

The similarities end at them being OVAs. One features a love triangle featuring two men and a woman, the other two women and a man; one has music influenced by the South Pacific and with its own constructed language, while the other is very EDM and techno (complete with an Aphex Twin reference); one is all about expanding the overarching mythology and mystique of Macross, which the other doesn't care about whatsoever and is more or less completely standalone

Zero IMO was fairly average. I thought it was OK, and I enjoyed it enough to pick up. I agree the ending is pretty wonk, and it does detract from the OVA overall. The tie ins to Frontier were a nice call back.

I doubt many people are importing Zero at this time, but to anyone who's thinking of doing so, be careful: there are two Japanese BD releases and only one of them has English subtitles.

At this point, legitimately don’t bother importing a Japanese release. Yeah, the AllTheAnime/Crunchyroll exclusive set is expensive, but it’s actually cheaper than either of the Japanese sets. And AllTheAnime is allegedly planning a cheaper non-premium release anyway.

I have the JP Collectors edition release which is very similar to this. However its 2 BD discs and is upscaled/remastered. It has english subs, and I have yet to watch the CR release to see if they are using the Remastered release as well.

I have the Crunchyroll release, it's definitely the upscaled/remastered one. Given the difference in the number of discs, it's definitely been authored differently, but it can be hard to tell why that is.

In this case though, poking around on the internet, I found out a pretty good explanation for the difference in the number of discs. The JP set uses single layer discs and the US/UK set uses a dual layer disc. So the compression and bitrate should be functionally identical.
