The anime its excellent, unfortunately, every season after the first it's just a summary of the manga, you are literally missing like half the plot if you only watch the anime.
Which leads to nonsensical situations, for example: the guy who is shorter than Ippo, at the end of their fight they act like good friends and this makes no sense in the anime since it comes from nowhere, however, in the manga they do become friends before the fight. Only the first season adapts the whole thing. |

As much as I enjoy Ippo, this season was about a lot of side characters and Rising ended with another side character story. Then if you go in the manga, saying the narrative slows down is a massive understatement. The OBPF/Champion Tour arc is such a slog (with some of the worst fights in the manga) that I’ve theorized any Ippo sequel Netflix produces will need to start after it and skip it, only going back to the cliff notes for plot-important details.
People argue that the recent (as in the last three years or so) pacing only sped up because Morikawa, the author, was shaken by the death of his friend Mirua, aka the author of Berserk. There’s this feeling he didn’t want to die without finishing. That being said the quality along with the pacing has gone back up as a lot of loose ends are tied up. |
