This would actually be a really good show if it was judiciously edited. Fairly early on, I thought it might even be competition for Seirei no Moribito. Unfortunately the further along the story gets, the more reused material fills screentime. Worse still, most of the parts that aren't reprisals are the same kind of flashback, except with new material. It doesn't improve the feel of the thing any. I'm thinking the optimal story length would have been about 30 episodes, but I would have to see the 10 episode version to decide if it even makes sense with that much stuff cut out. I won't be listening to the soundtrack to this. I had all three songs memorized by the end of the first episode. |

Most of the bad old anime has the decency to suck outright so I know I don't want to watch it. Birth, like most new shows, takes its sweet time about deciding whether or not to suck. I finished watching most of it before I knew for sure it wasn't that great. |

(By Iwasaki Taku, creator of music for Witch Hunter Robin, ROD TV, Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal, Kekkaishi, 009-1. It's hardly his best work though.) Incidentally, it's not "Black Cat," but rather "Burakku Kyatto." |

There are a lot of interesting things I could say about this anime, but the only lasting impressions I am likely to have are these: 1. It's depressing. Terribly so. 2. Every aspect of this thing is overdone. This fact alone does not make the show unwatchable, but the lack of variation can grow tiresome. It's like the creators made it over the top and pitched a tent in no man's land during the first few minutes, and remained there calmly roasting marshmallows for the duration of the series. It's boring. Or at least it will be, once you acclimate to the hail of stupidity bullets whizzing about. 3. There is a great deal of suckage where music is concerned. The small set of background music is reused to death, and it wasn't that great to begin with. Also, while I seldom pay any attention to OP/ED music (I skip over that part as much as I can on any show), this show has some of the worst I have ever had the misfortune of hearing. The OP is as painful to hear as a Backstreet Boys song. (Hanada actually goes as far as using one, so this isn't the only show with a frightening intro.) |

I was looking forward to this almost as soon as I started watching Index. I found out there was a spinoff before even watching it, and it doesn't take long to realize Railgun is by far the most interesting character from the main story. That being said, I have to admit that one of the strengths of this show is sometimes getting away from her as the main character. She is absent from the show periodically and that helps prevent viewers from growing tired of her. The supporting cast is interesting enough in this side story for that to work well. |

I saw a review of this that seemed to reflect the general feeling toward Code-E on the web. It basically said that the show was filled with cliche jokes, old character designs, etc. It then went into great detail about everything the show does that isn't funny. I finished reading it, and could only think "everything you just said wasn't funny wasn't a joke to begin with. Each event ended seconds before the actual punch line. Idiot." Maybe this thing only really works for a certain sense of humor. (The ANN user reviews are decent though.) I have to say that the characters are no less creative than those in 99.99% of the anime out there. I've seen more than enough to know. |

The summaries for this show read like the bilge that permeates the anime world. Even so, it stands in a place far above its counterparts. It's uniquely stylized art and animation add a great deal of emotion, perfectly in keeping with its content; without making it feel overdone. (Saikano anyone?) I felt that certain parts stretched my will to suspend disbelief, especially since I don't really go for this kind of story, but I give ratings based on quality. I have, therefore, grudgingly graced its greatness with a generous rating. |

Yet another anime that would be very good if it was half as long via removal of the perverted bits. I was skirting the line between watching and giving up for a while (the first three episodes, I think). While it does get better, unfortunately the remainder of the series is still sprinkled with the stuff that makes the first part of the show crap. The protagonist would be much easier for viewers to identify with if the series didn't waste so much time on "ehehehengh, the main character is a dirty peeping, panty-loving pervert" humor. Setting aside the fact that such humor gets pretty tiresome pretty fast, all the disrespectful pervert humor is horribly inconsistent with the caring, respectful character the rest of the show is trying to build up. It's one of the things that has me thinking, "It's no wonder nobody buys your DVDs. If I saw this on TV I wouldn't feel like paying for it either. It is, at best, a watch once show. |

Apparently there are people comparing this show to Cowboy Bebop. I don't think it bears more resemblance to that show than it does to others. In fact, I might find more similarities to Speed Grapher if I sat and thought about it. There also seem to be people who hate the ending. I don't. I suspect the ending is the only part in which I would find no fault if I sat down and listed all the things that are wrong with this show... and speaking of what's wrong, the art and animation are both worlds better in Cowboy Bebop than they are in this show. |

When this came out, I took one look at a promo picture and decided I wasn't going anywhere near it. After reading a review, I decided it would be worth a look. It was nice to see a reverse harem anime that not only doesn't suck, but is actually really good. Saiunkoku is the closest thing I had seen before this, and frankly, that's pretty sad. I am just looking for something good to watch. As much as I wish I could say otherwise, the one look test that this show failed used to be a 100% accurate crapometer. I don't hate reverse harem anime because it's reverse harem. I hate it because it sucks. The stuff ranges from the bland (like Harukanaru) to the vomitous. Saiunkoku managed to look like it would prove me wrong, but (all too quickly) descended well past bland, into the realm of the absolutely repugnant. It pretty much killed my desire to even give this stuff a chance, but maybe I'll look at things a little more closely now that I've seen Ouran High School Host Club. |

I got a certain feeling from this show, right from the start. Fearing that I was wrong, I went searching for random reviews. Some of them said it really sucked, but others confirmed my suspicion: Pandora Hearts is a show that gives every appearance of being something that sucks, but in actuality doesn't suck. I didn't have many complaints about it while watching, but there were some. It takes too long (nearly half the show) to really mature (i.e. shed things that smell of suckage). Otherwise, there isn't much I would think worth mentioning to someone thinking about watching it, except to rephrase what I said earlier. This show looks like it is the same as all the other crap coming out, but really isn't. |

This show kind of pisses me off. Some parts are phenomenally good, others are spectacularly stupid. Even the casting has that kind of weirdness to it. Kugimiya Rie was well cast in her role, but Noto Mamiko was a spectacularly inappropriate choice for hers (which is not to say that she did a bad job of it). Yamaguchi Mayumi or Kobayashi Sanae would have been a much better choice, assuming that one wanted a deep voice (instead of a popular one). I can only assume Noto Mamiko was supposed to give her character a gentle, motherly voice, but that doesn't come close to working in a grotesquely violent show like this. addt'l: I notice someone added "ero-guro" as a theme for this anime. I can only think that all the good ratings come from people who are rating it for how much they like that sort of thing (maybe it inherited some of Ninja Scroll's fans). As a story this thing is a boatload of "fail." |

This is, quite possibly, the most messed up thing I have ever seen. It might be roughly on par with Elfen Lied, though disturbing for very different reasons, but it is certainly more so than Narutaru, Bokurano, Perfect Blue, or any of Nagai Go's works I have seen. Shows like this piss me off. Some shows have the decency to just suck outright. Others pretend they might be worth watching and I quit them after realizing I've been wasting my time on a few episodes.
