Hopefully it gets run again it'll go more smoothly, safely, and fairly. The idea sounds like plenty of fun.

If you are trying to recreate the Hunter Exam, but want to eliminate risk, you might as well just run in an anime themed marathon.

Think this event survived due to its quick ad-hoc creation. Personally, I don't think there will be another one without a well funded sponsor and much higher ticket prices. Someone will have to pay for the liability insurance.

It wasn't mentioned in the article, if the participants signed injury waivers. But we live in a SUE happy culture, where people don't take responsibility for their own poor decisions or that an accident can just be an accident.

If there are future events, there should be injury waivers to be signed and ticket prices should reflect the costs for supplies and organization, for the prizes, and to cover the injury and liability insurance for each participant. The number of participants should be capped from the beginning so that your insurance costs can be accurately covered.

I know cosplayers were mentioned but I'm curious to see if anyone went as Leorio (which is to say, in a full suit, carrying a suitcase the whole time). That seems like it'd be especially brutal.

Anyway, sounds like a definitely interesting idea and I hope they give it another shot one day... though like people have said, hopefully they'll try to institute a little more safety and fairness (even if that's not exactly true to the manga/show).

Anyway, if there's gonna keep being anime-themed challenges in places, I'm curious to see how some madman organizer's gonna try to replicate the gravity on King Kai's planet for a DBZ challenge. Very Happy

Sorry if I misread or misunderstood something--was the time limit for the 8 mile run 2 hours or 1 hour 30? 2 hours is doable at a 15 minute mile, which is practically walking speed. I'm surprised so many dropped out. Then again, if people didn't quite know what they were signing up for, continuously going for that long may have influenced some "this isn't worth it" type decisions, plus the heat and no water issue.

It sounded potentially fun but also the organizers got lucky no one was seriously hurt.

It doesn't sound like there was that much of a time limit. The organizer declared he'd decide who passes and who fails and the article says that the last people who came in finished in 1hr 30.

Also, I hate to generalize with negative stereotypes, but there were probably a good bit of anime fans who showed up but don't get much physical exercise and if they didn't know the exact time limit I'd imagine plenty of people didn't pace themselves and went into sprints and wore out fast. Plus, yeah, the weather and lack of water.

Wasn't the Hunter Exams in HxH essentially a metaphor for college with Hunters Licenses being degrees?

I think the only one who wanted that was Leorio. Kurapika used his license to get into the mafia, Gon wanted to find information about Ging, Killua wanted to have fun, and our beloved Hisoka wanted to kill.

Yes, actually! I met two participants cosplaying as Leorio. Both of them put their briefcases down for the run, but I was impressed that they ran the whole 8 miles in their suits. I took some video interviews that might go up on ANN later. One is with Ousmane Diarra, who made it to the third phase. During the second phase he lost his Leorio cosplay glasses and wore sunglasses instead.

Great question. Yes, all participants signed a waiver.

Would be nice to see the interviews. Thank you for writing this article.
