And Yet the Town Moves (TV) | So-so | Not very funny with a main character having one of the most shrill and grating voices I've ever heard, this series was a big letdown from its potentially quirky premise. |
Angel's Egg (movie) | Masterpiece | a.k.a The Mamoru Oshii Movie That Isn't A Vaguely Disguised Lecture For A Few Philosophical Musings. |
anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day (TV) | Very good | Struggles a bit with characterization and logic, but still rather grounded and heartfelt. |
anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day (movie) | Good | A somewhat pointless coda, but still tugs at you a bit and ends on a less sappy note. |
Apocalypse Zero (OAV) | Worst ever | One of the dumbest, ugliest things I've ever seen. The ending is excruciatingly stupid in particular. |
Aquatic Language (special) | Good
Aria - The Natural (TV) | Very good | Some of the best character writing yet, but those supernatural episodes are totally arbitrary and dumb, drags the series down a lot. |
Aria the Animation (TV) | Very good
Art of Fighting (special) | Awful | Ugly and illogical Art of Fighting OVA. I'm a KoF fan, and this is really crappy, but totally harmless. On the plus side, the ending theme kicks major ass; give it a listen. |
Attack on Titan (TV) | So-so | Araki up to his old tricks. Overrated, but still better than a lot of really hyped series. |
Baby Blue (movie) | Excellent
Baccano! (TV) | Excellent | Eve Genoard is Satan and plagues the series. |
Barakamon (TV) | Decent | |
Bartender (TV) | Excellent | Bliss. Escapism at its finest. Excellent use of the forth wall and so easily digestible, sumptuous and mesmerizing. Perfect for unwinding. |
Beyond the Boundary (TV) | So-so | Has nuanced timing, but pairs it with pandering trope dialogue which leads to awful characterization. Tends to meander and lacks focus and soul. |
Birdy the Mighty Decode: The Cipher (OAV) | Decent
Birdy the Mighty Decode:02 (TV) | Very good
Birdy the Mighty: Decode (TV) | Good
Blast of Tempest (TV) | Bad | Superfluous Shakespeare references does not equate to quality and intelligence. |
Bleach (TV) | So-so | Had some style, but becomes too shaky and formulaic. |
Boogiepop Phantom (TV) | Good | Can't really find a balance between giving out too much and not providing enough meat. Most episodes are flat and somewhat arbitrary. There's a lot of nitpicks to this series, but it is still a refreshing change and better than a lot of things. A lesser Lain to be more frank. |
Brigadoon (TV) | Good | Clashing styles without substance; kind of like an R.O.D the TV-lite. Gets close to being hard-hitting a lot but misses the mark, still an interesting watch. |
Bunny Drop (TV) | Excellent | Adorable but not entirely compact. |
Buso Renkin (TV) | Weak | Watsuki getting too deep into Western comics, resulting in an extremely generic first half and an extremely contrived second. Has some decent moments though. |
C – Control – The Money and Soul of Possibility (TV) | Weak
Casshern Sins (TV) | Masterpiece | A testament to the more expansive new age of anime and its wealth of possibilities and not merely a product of a time period. |
Castle in the Sky (movie) | Very good | Too drab and the pacing is kind of all over. |
(The) Cat Returns (movie) | Decent
(Le) Chevalier D'Eon (TV) | Weak | A smoldering pile of pretty looking garbage. Writing creates a facade of quick pacing with constant and jarring transitioning. Far too many details and characters thrown around, finished with a trainwreck for the last few episodes. |
Colorful (movie) | Not really good | This movie feels very adult, but it certainly isn't executed with an adult level of intelligence. |
Cowboy Bebop (TV) | Very good | Backstories are a bit typical, Spike's motivations are wishy-washy with lots of conveniences, too emotionally distant and ending lacks oomph and closure for Faye (the best character really). |
Daily Lives of High School Boys (TV) | Good
DD Fist of the North Star (TV 2013) | Very good | Surprisingly hysterical parody with some wit. |
Deadman Wonderland (TV) | Not really good
Dear Brother (TV) | Masterpiece
Death Note (TV) | Weak | Araki melodrama, misogyny, nihilism and potato chips. |
Death Parade (TV) | Good | General lack of clarity and uses its concept as too much of a crutch while sometimes espousing preachy bullcrap. Recurring characters needed waaaaaaaaay more backstory. |
Denpa teki na Kanojo (OAV) | Bad | The Kure-nai anime is a superb liberal adaptation of a rather crappy manga, and seeing this OVA fortified my disliking of the original author's writing since this OVA is more faithful to its source, ending up being even worse than the Kure-nai manga as a dumb, awkward misanthropy and yandere overload. |
(The) Devil Is a Part-Timer! (TV) | Decent | Kind of inconsistent and a bit dry, becomes too formulaic in the second half. |
Dragon Ball (TV) | Good | |
Dragon Ball GT (TV) | Decent
Dragon Ball GT: A Hero's Legacy (special) | Awful | One of the most asinine cash-ins ever, the ending is painfully degrading. |
Dragon Ball Z (TV) | Decent
Dragon Ball Z: Bardock - The Father of Goku (special) | Very good | One of the best things to come out of the franchise. A few logical mistakes (Radditz and Goku shown as a happy baby right at the beginning) and being a bit short burden it. |
Dragon Ball Z: Bio-Broly (movie 11) | Worst ever | Literal crap permeates this movie and embodies it. |
Dragon Ball Z: Bojack Unbound (movie 9) | Good
Dragon Ball Z: Broly - Second Coming (movie 10) | So-so
Dragon Ball Z: Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan (movie 8) | Good
Dragon Ball Z: Dead Zone (movie 1) | So-so
Dragon Ball Z: Fusion Reborn (movie 12) | Decent
Dragon Ball Z: The Tree of Might (movie 3) | So-so
Dragon Ball Z: The World's Strongest (movie 2) | Weak
Dragon Ball: Episode of Bardock (special) | Bad
Dragon Ball: Plan to Eradicate the Super Saiyans (OAV) | Awful
Dusk maiden of Amnesia (TV) | Not really good
(The) Eccentric Family (TV) | Decent
Eden of the East (TV) | Very good | Good political thriller despite meandering a bit and having an ending that lacks closure and impact. |
ef: a tale of memories (TV) | Good
Eiken (OAV) | Awful | Gets a lucky 1 point break for just being stupid as all hell but not really offensive. |
Eureka Seven (TV) | Very good | 21-24 and 26-30 are the apex of the series, with the preceding 20 episodes being stale and the latter 20 being good but still not as great topped with an odd ending, but still better than the sum of its parts with the bildungsroman at its core and the lore. |
Eureka Seven - good night, sleep tight, young lovers (movie) | Good
Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone (movie) | Good
Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance (movie) | Very good
Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo (movie) | Not really good | 45 minutes of nothing, Kaworu still not getting enough time with Shinji, a lot of other random stuff happening without proper grounds for the world building, and people guilt tripping Shinji more...ya dun goofed and dropped the ball Gainax; you better patch it all up in 4.0. |
Fafner (TV) | So-so | An Eva clone that doesn't really know what it's trying to do with its characters or stories and just wallows in melodrama. The aesthetics and setting oddly draw me in though, so I shall continue to look into the franchise for something salvageable. |
Fate/stay night (TV) | Decent
Fate/Zero (TV) | Very good
Fate/Zero (TV 2) | Very good
Fist of the North Star (TV) | Masterpiece | It's not simply acid flare machismo cheesiness, it is actually something much much greater; something that few seem to catch onto. |
Fist of the North Star 2 (TV) | So-so | This is basically what face value looks at the original series quantify. In other words, it lacks the hidden depth of the first series and is exactly what it looks like: apocalyptic beefcake cheesy fest. |
FLCL (OAV) | Masterpiece | Deceptively brilliant. Not simply some screwball cartoonish OVA. |
Flowers of Evil (TV) | Decent
From the New World (TV) | So-so | Characters are plot devices, scope wastes too much potential, most arcs are really unengaging and almost asinine, and the final--and perhaps strongest--arc has a major plot contrivance and a rather cynical ending. |
Fullmetal Alchemist (TV) | Excellent | Some of the filler and the ending suck, plus there's a bit too much rehashing, but still a good liberal adaptation. |
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (TV) | Good | Middle arcs are solid, but the first 13 episodes are rushed and the final arc is somewhat sloppy. Generally has less thematic and emotional weight than its predecessor. |
Fullmetal Alchemist: The Movie - Conqueror of Shamballa | Decent
(The) Future Diary (TV) | So-so | Misanthropy that has at least reached the point where it is both not 100% serious and not 100% logical to where it becomes mildly humourous. |
Galilei Donna (TV) | Weak
Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo (TV) | Excellent | Last two episodes are stinkers. The rest is fantastic. |
(The) Garden of Words (movie) | Decent
Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet (TV) | So-so | Final episode epitomizes the series' downfall; thought provoking and intelligent opening episodes then hampered by lame shipping and tree hugging. |
Gatchaman Crowds (TV) | Excellent | Great de- and reconstruction of the henshin era and heroism. Stumbles a bit in the last third, but will probably be sorted out with the extended ending and sequels. |
Gauche the Cellist (movie) | Good
Getbackers (TV) | Excellent | An underrated shonen that is a lot of fun with hardly much wrong with it. |
Ghost in the Shell (movie) | Good
Giant Robo (OAV) | Good | Doesn't really give much until the final 2 episodes, and even then there are some nitpicks. |
Ginga Nagareboshi Gin (TV) | Good | Too many ass-pulls and some repetitive themes, but still cool. Humans also sadly get shafted after a few episodes. |
Gintama: The Movie | Decent | One of the weakest GinTama arcs, they should've done Red Spider. |
Good Luck Girl! (TV) | Decent
Grave of the Fireflies (movie) | Excellent | Ending is more depressing than tear-jerking, but still powerful. |
Gundam Reconguista in G (TV) | Excellent
Gurren Lagann (TV) | Very good | Probably respect it more than I actually enjoy it. Lordgenome and Viral are cool though. |
GYO: Tokyo Fish Attack (OAV) | Not really good | Provides at least a bit of campy fun. |
Haibane Renmei (TV) | Very good
Hajime no Ippo (TV) | Excellent
Hajime no Ippo Rising (TV) | Excellent | Not too much progress and the flashback arc has some tired story elements, but I'll be damned if that final fight wasn't visceral as all hell and had me jumping out of my seat cheering. Other fights are great too. |
Hanasaku Iroha - Blossoms for Tomorrow (TV) | Good
Heaven's Memo Pad (TV) | So-so | There's nothing motivating you to care for much of anything that transpires in this series, it's just so asinine and dull. |
Honey x Honey Drops (OAV) | Worst ever | Grating misogyny. |
Hotarubi no Mori e (movie) | Good | Should've been 1/3 of the length; concept can't stand for that long, it would be neat as a short film though. |
House of Five Leaves (TV) | Excellent
Howl's Moving Castle (movie) | Decent
Hunter X Hunter (TV 1999) | Masterpiece | Probably one of the best shonen series of all time, and an excellent rendition of it as well. An intelligent deconstruction of the manga demographic and its genres. |
Hunter X Hunter (OAV) | Masterpiece | More Yorknew goodness. |
Hunter X Hunter: G I Final (OAV) | Good | Better than the first Greed Island OVA at least, again, this OVA still constitutes the Greed Island arc which was wholly done better in 2011. |
Hunter X Hunter: Greed Island (OAV) | Decent | Advantage point 2011 for the Greed Island arc. |
Hunter × Hunter (TV 2011) | Excellent | Pulls off Greed Island better and the new arcs are good, but is inferior in nearly all respects to its predecessor with the preceding arcs. |
Inferno Cop (ONA) | Very good | Pretty great satire. |
Inuyasha (TV) | ||
InuYasha the Movie 3: Swords of an Honorable Ruler | Good
InuYasha the Movie 4: Fire on the Mystic Island | So-so
InuYasha the Movie: Affections Touching Across Time | Decent
JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (TV) | Very good | Gets extra points for being Jojo despite Phantom Blood being the weakest part and Battle Tendency having a few hiccups. |
JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders (TV) | Very good
Kaiba (TV) | Masterpiece | A little less consistent than Tatami Galaxy, but more ambitious and captivating. |
Kaiji: Against All Rules (TV) | Excellent | Much more refined than season 1 with a tremendous ending. |
Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor (TV) | Good | First 6 and last 4 episodes are great, the rest is somewhat redundant and poor. |
(The) Kawai Complex Guide to Manors and Hostel Behavior (TV) | Excellent | Where's season 2!? D: |
Kemonozume (TV) | Not really good | First 2 episodes are rather cool, but gradually becomes a misogynistic and stupid nutcase. Easily Yuasa's weakest. |
Kids on the Slope (TV) | Very good | First 2/3rds are good, the last third is crap. |
Kill la Kill (TV) | Good | |
Kino's Journey (TV) | Masterpiece
Koi Kaze (TV) | Very good | |
Kurenai (TV) | Masterpiece | A successful liberal adaptation infinitely superior to its source. Shonen for adults that is absolutely superb and sadly underrated. |
Kyousougiga (TV) | Good | Too much of a wishy-wash FLCL for me. The sentimental stuff didn't really resonate with me, the MC just annoyed me and the themes just kind of looped about. |
(The) Last: Naruto The Movie | Bad
A Letter to Momo (movie) | Excellent | Thematically light and at times a bit drab, but well written; essentially a non-Ghibli Ghibli film. Okiura should be more prominent in the anime film scene. |
Limit Cycle (movie) | Bad
Living for the Day After Tomorrow (TV) | Good
Looking Up At The Half-Moon (TV) | Very good
Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions! (TV) | Good
Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro (movie) | Very good
Lupin III: The Woman Called Fujiko Mine (TV) | Very good
Mad Bull 34 (OAV) | Masterpiece | Koike proves he has the capacity for great comedy after the epic Lone Wolf and Cub. Except episode 4 which was a mistake. |
Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha The MOVIE 1st | Decent
Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha the Movie 2nd A's | Good
(La) Maison en Petits Cubes (movie) | Very good
Maria Watches Over Us (TV) | Very good | An interesting dynamic in the first few episodes is shafted, but there's still good drama in season 1. |
Maria Watches Over Us Season 2: Printemps (TV) | Very good | The increased melodrama counters the more focused material, but is still affecting. |
MazinKaiser (OAV) | Decent
Mazinkaiser SKL (OAV) | Excellent | This is how you make a thrilling action movie Michael Bay. Take notes. |
(The) Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (TV) | Good | Decent concept, boring direction. |
Millennium Actress (movie) | Excellent
Mind Game (movie) | Very good | Pacing issues abound, and the general focus feels a little boring, but the ending is quite moving. |
Mobile Fighter G Gundam (TV) | Very good
Mobile Suit Gundam (TV) | Excellent | Despite a slow start, a bittersweet ending and being a bit lacking in dramatic heft at times, this is an exceptional war story with rich character development and broad, multi-faceted factions. Iconic for a reason. |
Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket (OAV) | Excellent | I only wish it didn't have those convenient coincedences and the last episode didn't try to shoehorn some overly-jovial bonding for the circumstances. A staggering little war anecdote in its own right. |
Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory (OAV) | Excellent | Gets a bit messy in the last 3rd or so, but the ideas and characters establish a certain niche that's right up my alley. Ideological conflicts of one's worth within a war and a time ravaged by it along with the unjust peace in between makes this a challenging and vital companion piece to the canon and a fascinating individual tale as well. |
Mobile Suit Gundam F91 (movie) | Decent
Mobile Suit Gundam Seed (TV) | Weak | Kira is horrendous and it is a sloggish reimagining of early UC stuff, but can still be okay at times. |
Mobile Suit Gundam Seed C.E.73: Stargazer (ONA) | So-so | Far too rushed and poorly explained, had the potential to be great, perhaps if it were a 2 hour movie. |
Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Destiny (TV) | Bad | Just when I thought Seed couldn't get any worse... |
Mobile Suit Gundam UC (OAV) | Very good
Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ (TV) | Masterpiece
Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack (movie) | Bad
Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team (OAV) | Decent | Pretty flat all around. Hard to get behind Shiro and his bouncing from reckless moron to stern captain, the rest of the team are also pretty 2-dimensional and have their problems solved through single episode A-Team-esque ordeals. Lots of contrived anger behind the factions too. |
Mobile Suit Victory Gundam (TV) | Very good
Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam (TV) | Good
Mononoke (TV) | So-so | |
Moribito - Guardian of the Spirit (TV) | Very good | Poor filler and wacky revelations later down the line soil an initially exhilarating journey. |
Mōryō no Hako (TV) | Good | A very strange mystery... |
Mudazumo Naki Kaikaku (OAV) | Very good | Too short hahaha. |
Mushi-Shi (TV) | Excellent | Needs a revisit, recently it seems I haven't been able to connect with the execution of the themes, but it's nice for relaxing at least. |
My Little Monster (TV) | So-so
My Neighbor Totoro (movie) | Masterpiece | Childhood in a nutshell. |
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (movie) | Very good | Manga's better. |
Neon Genesis Evangelion (TV) | Excellent | Monumental but not perfect. |
Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death & Rebirth (movie) | Not really good
Nichijou - My Ordinary Life (TV) | Good
Noein - to your other self (TV) | Very good | Takes some time to get going and falters in some areas, but really strong story on multidimensional stuff and quantum physics. |
Now and Then, Here and There (TV) | Very good | Kind of "theme of the week" but still hard hitting. The ending is a bit irksome though, despite it trying to support the deconstruction. |
Nura: Rise of the Yokai Clan (TV) | Good
Nura: Rise of the Yokai Clan: Demon Capital (TV) | Excellent | A great season of an ill-fated Shonen Jump manga that was actually rather good. |
Once Upon a Time (movie) | Excellent
One Piece: Baron Omatsuri and the Secret Island (movie 6) | Very good | I'd say Hosoda's best. |
One Piece: Dead End (movie 4) | Decent
Only Yesterday (movie) | Excellent | An early narrative muddling and shoehorned romance element hamper an otherwise beautiful film. |
Origin ~Spirits of the Past~ (movie) | Not really good
Paprika (movie) | Decent
Parasyte -the maxim- (TV) | Decent | Never really had that much fun in it and it's far to clumsy to be an allegory for anything, it's simply a weird body horror action series. Really suffers in those last 4-6 episodes. |
Patlabor 2: The Movie (movie 2) | Very good
Patlabor: The Movie (movie 1) | Decent
Perfect Blue (movie) | Excellent
Persona 4: The Animation (TV) | So-so
Ping Pong (TV) | Very good
Porco Rosso (movie) | Good
(Le) Portrait de Petite Cossette (OAV) | Bad | Nauseating, extremely inflated and didactic. A Shaft nightmare where they basically redid Passion of the Christ with pseudo-deep imagery and goth-lolis. |
Princess Mononoke (movie) | Excellent
Problem children are coming from another world, aren't they? (TV) | So-so | The exposition and deus ex machina are strong in this one. Still somewhat fun though. |
Psychic School Wars (movie) | Weak | This movie is the equivalent of supermodel stereotypes: absolutely gorgeous but low on intelligence to the point of near incomprehensibility. |
Puella Magi Madoka Magica (TV) | Very good
Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie Part 1: Beginnings | Very good
Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie Part 2: Eternal | Very good
R.O.D -The TV- | Masterpiece | My numero uno. No other anime (perhaps even media product) has made me feel so emotionally invested than this has. |
RahXephon (TV) | Masterpiece | The Tragic Love Song That Transcends Time and Space |
Rainbow - Nisha Rokubō no Shichinin (TV) | Very good | The 2nd half is one big coda essentially that leaves Mario and Soldier hanging a bit, but still nice. Wish there was another season. |
Reborn! (TV) | So-so | Nurarihyon no Mago does it better. |
Redline (movie) | Very good | Needs more backstory, more of the final race and a better ending. *winces in pain recalling the finale* |
Revolutionary Girl Utena (TV) | Still unsure what to think. Need to ease my mind after Utena overdose soiled my mind.
Revolutionary Girl Utena: The Movie | The true ending in my book and a necessary sequel. While the ending is super drawn-out, it's waaaaaaaay more satisfying and beautiful.
(The) Rose of Versailles (TV) | Very good | Somewhat silly, inconsistent and meandering with a kind of cruel ending, but still a very strong series. |
Royal Space Force - The Wings of Honnêamise (movie) | Good | The rape, the long chase scene and the ending really brought it down. |
Rumbling Hearts (TV) | Good | First 4 episodes are stellar but after episode 5 it really starts to fall apart. |
Rurouni Kenshin: Trust & Betrayal (OAV) | Masterpiece | If you give this less than 'Excellent' you're pretty much dead to me and your views won't seem as valid, sorry. :) |
Sailor Moon R: The Movie | Awful
Saint Seiya: Legend of Crimson Youth (movie) | Very good | It feels like it has the potential to be something masterful, but held back far too much. |
Saint Seiya: Warriors of the Final Holy Battle (movie) | Not really good
Samurai 7 (TV) | Good | The villain, the ending and the mechas are the detractors. |
Samurai Champloo (TV) | Masterpiece | The last 3 episodes are absolute perfection, and the series as a whole is superb a counter-culture, anti-narrative odyssey with some fascinating subject matter, stellar fights and music and cool backstories. |
Samurai Flamenco (TV) | Weak
Say "I love you." (TV) | Decent | Somewhat typical but executed well in certain areas. Last episode is laughable and can be totally ignored. |
School Days (TV) | Masterpiece | Another misconstrued masterpiece. A meticulous wunderkind stroke of staggering brilliance, it works on so many levels and is essential viewing. No bullcrap. |
(The) Secret World of Arrietty (movie) | Excellent
Serial Experiments Lain (TV) | Excellent
Servant × Service (TV) | Not really good
Shakugan no Shana (TV) | ||
She, The Ultimate Weapon (TV) | Decent | A myriad of problems, but some occasional strengths. Unfortunately ends on a bad note, but still adequate. Wildly subjective series though, everyone will get something different out of it. |
(The) Sky Crawlers (movie) | Good | Oshii kind of befuddling the metaphors and themes with a lack of focus. |
(il) sole penetra le illusioni ~ Day Break Illusion (TV) | Not really good
Someday's Dreamers (TV) | Very good | Doesn't respect its viewers' intelligence enough, wasting its thought-provoking concepts by shoving them down your throat. Great ideas nonetheless. |
Space Dandy (TV) | Decent
Spiral (TV) | Very good | Poor production values and a lack of a sequel hold back this otherwise awesome mystery series. |
Summer Wars (movie) | Good
(The) Tatami Galaxy (TV) | Excellent | Some muddled ideas lead to a slightness and it is heavy-handed in other areas, but it's inventive, hilarious and a lot of fun. |
Tegami Bachi: Letter Bee (TV) | Very good | Somewhat slow paced and a little weak to start, but has some of the best fillers ever that go well with the series. A nice shonen adventure franchise that brings back heart (and soul) into the genre. |
Terror in Resonance (TV) | Excellent
Texhnolyze (TV) | Very good | Visceral first 6 episodes and a potent finale with lots of daring narrative techniques to bolster its themes, but too bloated by inane politics more simply for the sake of itself. |
Tokyo Ghoul (TV) | So-so | |
Tokyo Ghoul √A (TV) | Not really good
Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 (TV) | Good | Probably would've been better condensed as an OVA. |
Tokyo Majin (TV) | Bad | Main characters that are so thin that one of the episodic characters has more depth than the lot of them, really dull action and direction and generally being insipid and boring, wasting some decent production values, character designs and aesthetics. |
Touch (TV) | Very good | The first season is easily a masterpiece, but the rest of it doesn't uphold that level of quality, although I do connect strongly with Tatsuya. |
Toward the Terra (TV) | Good | So much I wanted to love about this anime, but so many punches were pulled. Still heartfelt at its core. |
Trigun (TV) | Good | Far more dull than it initially seems. I find it is better when it goes emo, but still takes quite some time to get really good. |
(The) Troubled Life of Miss Kotoura (TV) | Very good
tsuritama (TV) | Decent | Not enough angst, ennui and style. Mostly just awkward and stale. |
Turn A Gundam (TV) | Decent
Unlimited Psychic Squad (TV) | Very good
Urban Square - Kohaku no Tsuigeki (OAV) | Very good
Urusei Yatsura: Beautiful Dreamer (movie 2) | Very good
(The) Vision of Escaflowne (TV) | Good | Very fun but very flawed and at times even irksome. Dilandau needs to be burned at the stake. |
Voices of a Distant Star (OAV) | So-so
Wake Up, Girls!: The Movie | Not really good
Welcome to Irabu's Office (TV) | Decent | Seems light on theme and simply just quirky. The non-linear continuity and largely self-contained content doesn't feel wholesome. |
Welcome to the NHK (TV) | Very good | The Suicide Island episodes are the ones that are the most outstanding while the rest doesn't meet the standard as well, especially the conclusions that prioritize a message of "life throws curveballs" over having full circle closure for each character's scenario. Some pretty good dark humour though. |
Whisper of the Heart (movie) | Good | Laughably corny but has some spots of nuance and genuine wonder. |
(The) Wind Rises (movie) | Excellent | Rewatch was fruitful. Likely Miyazaki's second best to Totoro, great swan song if it is that. |
Winter Days (movie) | Good
Witch Hunter Robin (TV) | Bad | The Twilight before Twilight with an extra dose of edgy and emo. |
Wizard Barristers: Benmashi Cecil (TV) | Good
Wolf's Rain (TV) | Masterpiece | Would've been fine if they found Paradise then and there and Darcia just gave up, but the true ending still has purpose. Must be running full-cylinders to enjoy it, but man is it incredible. |
Wolf's Rain (OAV) | Good | Pretty melodramatic and very drawn out. Ending relies on a convenience which is really odd. |
World Conquest Zvezda Plot (TV) | Decent
(The) World Is Still Beautiful (TV) | Decent
You're Being Summoned, Azazel (TV) | Very good
Your Lie in April (TV) | Not really good | Total ineptitude all around. After a promising first few episodes, the mentally damaged main character gets bullied ruthlessly and relentlessly as it is played off as "comedy". Kaori is a flat out b*tch which the series just manipulated people into caring about when it turned out she was dying while staying mean to the very end really. Pushes its flowery monologues way too hard to the point of hypocrisy ("express through music" leads to 20 more monologues). 2nd half has almost no focus and adds a new character not worth caring about given how others are under-developed. Pretty awful at romance (twist just further complicates matters). Quite lacking in ambition and plot. Most of the series' problems would be solved for the better if they took Kousei to a freaking psychiatrist, cripes; positive reinforcement (through blackmail and bullying) is not how you help someone overcome their trauma. |
Yozakura Quartet ~Hana no Uta~ (TV) | Excellent | A solid, kind of stylish, overlooked shonen series that has a nice mixture of slice of life with superpowered teens with good writing. Really want this franchise to take off and keep expanding in anime form. |
Yozakura Quartet ~Hoshi no Umi~ (OAV) | Excellent
Yu Yu Hakusho: Ghost Files (TV) | Excellent | I have strong feelings for Yu Yu Hakusho; sue me. |

Naruto Shippūden (TV) | Awful | Naruto crying to a guy to guilt trip him into sacrificing himself to revive a village of people. A political summit where each country just whines about Sasuke and the Akatsuki. More NaruSasu reunions and emo nagging like every other time. Zombie ninjas free of charge that spontaneously vanish when they are about to get the upper hand. Retroactive gaping plot holes. Kekkei Genkai and eye transplants for everyone. The old generation coming back as zombies to totally crap on the main theme of the story in the first place. A seemingly endless supply of chakra just for the occasion. Really contrived motivations and side shifting coupled with bogus twists. Legions more disposable one-dimensional characters and even worse females. Stupid pacifism talks. All that and more! |

Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt (TV) | Worst ever | "It's basically a parody of really vulgar adult American cartoons by being overly disgusting itself." Remind me what the point is and how that makes this at all good? |
