I didn't like it; the main plot was hard to stomach and much of it felt clumsy and/or overdone to me. I tried to take it on its own merit, but I guess I expected a lot more after having seen Clannad and Kanon. Still, it did have nice music and art. |

Brilliant! This was a real surprise. It started off great and just kept getting better; the surreal humour of the later episodes especially left me really eager for more. |
Angel Beats! (TV) |
Very good |
This show left me with a REALLY poor first impression, but I'm glad I relented and watched the rest of it. While quite formulaic and immature, some truly touching moments and a good amount of humour help lift this work much higher than I originally thought possible. |

Azumanga Daioh (TV) |
Excellent |
One of (if not) the funniest anime series I've seen. When it isn't being outright hilarious it makes do with being downright adorable. It has a sort of simple charm to it which I really like. Definitely one of my favourite anime series. |
Azumanga Daioh - The Very Short Movie |
Very good |
An interesting insight into what Azumanga Daioh might have looked like with a bigger budget. Aside from that it's essentially a condensed, fast-paced sampler of things adapted from the manga/anime. |
Azumanga Web Daioh (ONA) |
Good |
Pretty interesting little tid-bit. I liked the portable camera concept; and it was pretty well done to boot. |
Baccano! (TV) |
Good |
It's an enjoyable action adventure with a good amount of variety and character depth. Most definitely not for the squeamish - this one of the most brutally violent serialised anime that I've ever seen. Just don't take it seriously or think too hard about it. The non-linear narrative was a bit hard to follow to begin with, but overall it was pretty well done and worked well in balancing the pacing of the show. I've certainly never seen anything quite like it. |
Baka and Test - Summon the Beasts (TV) |
Good |
A fun little show with a good number of laughs, even if much of it is completely tried-and-true. Generally the characters carry the show, although only a minority are actually well-defined and interesting. Yoshii's seemingly incest-obsessed sister was downright creepy, but thankfully 1) her appearances were infrequent, and 2) Yoshii's reactions were pretty amusing. |
Baka and Test - Summon the Beasts 2 (TV) |

Bakemonogatari (TV) |

Bamboo Blade (TV) |

I found it quite entertaining and enjoyable. Quite a few amusing moments, and enough variety to keep things interesting. |
BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad (TV) |
Very good |
An excellent, addictive series - I was genuinely sad when it was over. I can't help but wish it had had a bigger budget to play with though; it's infinitely more deserving than most other anime that I've seen. But still - it's great as it stands. |
Black Blood Brothers (TV) |
Very good |
I'm definitely a fan of the visual style and character designs, not so much a fan of the non-ending - given that we'll almost certainly never see a sequel. An entertaining, enjoyable show overall, but takes ages to get going properly - then it's over almost immediately after that. |
Black Lagoon (TV) |
Very good |
An ultra-violent and often mildly disturbing underground crime/action series vaguely reminiscent of Tarantino's works, with a similar streak of dark humour. It's a little pretentious, but definitely entertaining enough if you don't mind the basic themes. Also one of the best English dubs I've ever heard. |
Black Lagoon: The Second Barrage (TV) |
Very good |
Generally more of the same, but with longer-running plots. The first few episodes are probably the most disturbing of the two seasons. This season also seems to step up the "cartoonyness" even further - prominent examples: A little kid easily holding/firing an Minimi/M60 and a guy slicing bullets in half with a katana (twice, no less). Personally I think that without these things Black Lagoon would be no less entertaining, but certainly more believable and perhaps more compelling as a result. But whatever. |
Black Rock Shooter (OAV) |
Good |
A pretty cool thing. Mato should definitely find herself some less emotionally unhinged/insecure friends though. |
Bleach (TV) |
Good |
I enjoy Bleach, but the actual content is -thin-; especially in the later episodes. The show always had too much needless exposition, but these days the recaps are getting stupidly long, and I swear the later episodes are 80-90% filler. |
Blue Exorcist (TV) |
Very good |
Bunny Drop (TV) |
Excellent |
Buso Renkin (TV) |
Good |
Certainly entertaining, with some unique characters and a nice enough love story underneath - but as a whole it's ultimately pretty generic and forgettable. Not brilliant, not terrible. |
C – Control – The Money and Soul of Possibility (TV) |

CANAAN (TV) |
Good |
Not bad; could've been much better. As it stands it's a good little mindless action thing. A little convoluted and long-winded at times, but entertaining enough. The ending wasn't particularly satisfying. |
Carnival Phantasm (OAV) |
Decent |
Castle in the Sky (movie) |

A Certain Magical Index (TV) |
Very good |
A bit long-winded, slow and downright tiresome at times... But it's a fun show overall, and I like it. Fantastic music. |
A Certain Magical Index II (TV) |
Decent |
A Certain Scientific Railgun (TV) |
Very good |
I really enjoyed the humour-centric/light-hearted episodes - the rest was a bit of a mixed bag. This series is let down most of all by its terribly overdone, shallow antagonists - Kiyama Harumi being the only exception. I quite like the show overall, but found it quite annoying at times. |
Children Who Chase Lost Voices (movie) |
Very good |
Chobits (TV) |
Good |
Chobits is a bit of a mixed bag. It has an interesting (although hardly unique) premise and ideas from a sci-fi perspective, but it's a romantic comedy/drama first-and-foremost. The whole thing seems aimed squarely at older adolescents, with a good deal of fan-service and such. The worst of the "fan pandering" is concentrated around the middle episodes of the first half. Still, if you can get past that it's quite an entertaining and reasonably insightful series. |
Clannad (TV) |
Masterpiece |
I'm not sure what I expected from Clannad, but it certainly wasn't what I got. Through the emotional highs to the emotional lows, it was superb. |
Clannad After Story (TV) |
Masterpiece |
Stunning. Heart-breaking. Without a doubt it stands amongst the most emotionally powerful shows I have ever seen - anime or otherwise. |
Claymore (TV) |
Very good |
Great brutal action with an interesting setting, premise, and characters. I'd really, REALLY like to see a second season of this - preferably set after Raki has grown up some and is (one can only hope) less of a cry-baby. His whining was by far my least favourite part of this show. |
Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion (TV) |
Not really good |
I didn't like the characters, premise or story. I'm really not sure why this show is so (seemingly) popular; although the audio-visual side things were certainly pretty top-notch. |
Cowboy Bebop (TV) |
Excellent |
Great show; it simply oozes style. Great characters and excellent writing - it's a classic. I just wish there was more of it. |
Coyote Ragtime Show (TV) |
Decent |
An entertaining little action-adventure, but quite simplistic and under-developed. The script (and characters) needed a few more drafts, I think. |
Croisée in a Foreign Labyrinth - The Animation (TV) |
Very good |
Dance in the Vampire Bund (TV) |
Decent |
Not as bad as the general furore seems to suggest. ...But still pretty bad. Still, I actually found this to be more tasteful than Strike Witches - at least this was (somewhat) less arbitrary and transparent. Beyond the controversial elements it was a pretty solid show; nothing too amazing, but entertaining - so long as you can stomach mildly high degrees of violence and some unsettling sexual overtones. |
Darker than Black (TV) |
Excellent |
A compelling show which I thoroughly enjoyed. Interesting, complex characters and a mysterious (if brutal) world; a generally top-notch production. Definitely one of my favourite series. |
Darker than Black - Kuro no Keiyakusha: Gaiden (OAV) |
Excellent |
Darker than Black: Gemini of the Meteor (TV) |
Very good |
Unfortunately nowhere near as good as the first season. Aside from the whole silly plot, the ending was especially disappointing. It felt horribly rushed; to the point where I thought I'd hit the half-way point of the season as it ended. The ending was make-or-break, and it broke for me. Great visuals and music, good characters (mostly), bad story (or at least badly told) IMO. |
Den-noh Coil (TV) |
Very good |
Fantastic up until about the half-way point, after which it developed a nasty case of convolution-in-place-of-depth. While on the whole the latter half was quite good, the devil is in the details. I liked the unravelling of the main mysteries, but it was padded with FAR too much overwrought, meandering spoken exposition. Having your characters constantly vomit expository dialogue is NOT good storytelling. There were other, more glaring problems, but I'd have to spoil parts of the ending. Overall, I can't help but think this series could have been so much more with a little more care in the writing and direction. It's annoying really. |

Dragonaut - The Resonance (TV) |
So-so |
This show - to put it nicely - had more than a few problems. Still, I persevered through the many *groan* and facepalm-worthy moments. I thought the ending was perhaps the best part of the show, although overall I had the feeling that this show could've been half as long and been better for it. A lot of the CG was pretty terrible (especially the animation), as were some of the character designs and writing. After seeing the whole thing, I think the plot had potential, but the production as a whole was a real train-wreck. Still; it had its moments, although they were pretty few and far inbetween. |
Dream Eater Merry (TV) |
Decent |
Ergo Proxy (TV) |
Excellent |
Perhaps my #1 favourite anime series. It's not perfect - there are (I think) a couple of out-of-place episodes, perhaps a tad too much rhetoric, and the odd art foible. That aside, it's a compelling and unique sci-fi (with a dash of surreal fantasy), with a superb look-and-feel. I honestly wish there was more anime out there like this. I hadn't seen anything like it, and haven't since. Most unfortunately. |
Eureka Seven (TV) |
Very good |
Quite laboured (bordering on completely stupid) in places, but had a solid enough story underneath. Seeing the growth of the characters was quite rewarding by the end of the series, and probably the backbone of the show - but at times it was just plain irritating. With its veritable bucket-load of psychotic, unstable and/or just plain immature characters, it won't be everyone's cup of tea. Even so, I think it's worth persevering through at least once. |
Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone (movie) |
Very good |
An absolutely gorgeous production, and a vast improvement on the original series. But it's still Evangelion. I prefer the new take on Shinji, but Misato still annoys the hell out of me - and seriously - why the hell is Pen Pen even in this? This was a great chance for Evangelion to "grow up". (And it did... A bit.) |
Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance (movie) |
Good |
The art is sublime, the plot is improved in a good number of ways over the original. And yet... 1) What happened with the soundtrack? The tune I heard WAY too many times in Kare Kano (His and Her Circumstances) is suddenly in Evangelion too? The songs (with vocals) were terrible. Just terrible. I'm sure their intention was create artistic tension/contrast between the visuals and the soundtrack - but it didn't work. It stank. I'm guessing they ran out of budget. 2) The "English" at the start: Pathetic. Seriously, how hard would it be to get some native speakers in. Seriously, for crap's sake. 3) New character: Laughable. The way she talks to herself about her boobs and ends at least one sentence with -nya, and this show has just worn out its welcome all over again. All I can say is that it's a real bloody shame. The whole thing is still, as ever, a visually spectacular rampaging schizophrenic mess. |
(The) Familiar of Zero (TV) |
Good |
Quite a few amusing moments; I quite enjoyed it, silly though it was. |
(The) Familiar of Zero: Knight of the Twin Moons (TV) |
Decent |
Basically more of the same; I found it less amusing than the first series, though. Either the novelty wore off, or it's just not as good. |
(The) Familiar of Zero: Rondo of Princesses (TV) |

Fate/stay night (TV) |
Good |
I intensely disliked the tragic ending; it was really quite heart-wrenching. Other than that, it was pretty good. |
Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works (movie) |
Not really good |
Disappointing. So long as you've seen the entirety of the original anime you'll be able to follow it, but this is NOT a good movie in its own right. As a movie it's downright broken. It had absolutely brilliant action sequences, but unfortunately the whole thing comes off as a horribly slapped together highlights reel. Could've been great with some clever exposition/structure instead of the brute force cutting method they opted for... |
Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children (movie) |

Fireball Charming (TV) |

FLCL (OAV) |
Excellent |
It's unapologetically surreal and passionately extraordinary. A must-see. Personally I love it. |
Full Metal Panic! (TV) |
Good |
It was OK. I enjoyed the lighter moments mainly. The "serious" stuff suffered from an unfortunate overabundence of stupid, IMO. |
Full Metal Panic! The Second Raid (TV) |
Good |
This is obviously the "middle" of what will probably be a trilogy of seasons - so all the characters are essentially "at the low-point". More violent and mature (in terms of target audience physical age, not necessarily mental age). Personally I found it to be more interesting than the first season, although it still smelled of stupid. |
Full Metal Panic! The Second Raid (OAV) |
Very good |
As with "Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu"; I genuinely prefer these light-hearted bits to the "serious" part of the story. |
Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu (TV) |

I would honestly prefer another season of this than another of the "proper" story, as I much prefer these light-hearted segments. |
Fullmetal Alchemist (TV) |
Very good |
Not much to say; a good show, but I much prefer the Brotherhood version personally. |
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (TV) |
Masterpiece |
Honestly I never thought I'd rate a show of this type as a masterpiece - but this was an epic story that truly felt like a journey by the end, and a near-faultless production generally. I much preferred this to the original series (which was already quite good). |
Fullmetal Alchemist: The Sacred Star of Milos (movie) |
So-so |
Gakuen Alice (TV) |
So-so |
The lighthearted parts of this show (i.e. most of it) have a certain silly charm to them, and some genuinely amusing moments. On the other hand, the "darker" side of it felt completely forced and often out-of-place to me. It generally could've done with some generous helpings of subtlety I think. |
Ghastly Prince Enma Burning Up (TV) |

Ghost in the Shell (movie) |

Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence (movie) |

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (TV) |

In my opinion this is (thus far) the ultimate post-cyberpunk work, regardless of medium. Sophisticated and intelligent; fantastic stuff. |
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2nd GIG (TV) |
Excellent |
An improvement on the first series in many regards, and brave enough to feature a very different set of antagonists and broader story. I appreciated the more mature art choices (the Major's wardrobe for example), and the more "focussed" feel - although the back-story episodes were also good. |
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex: Solid State Society (movie) |
Excellent |
A worthy addition to the Stand Alone Complex canon, and a fitting precursor to a third season (please please please...). The plot was a little obtuse I suppose; it didn't quite have the same bite as those found in the series, I thought. But it was excellent nevertheless. |
Gintama (TV) |

Gunslinger Girl (TV) |
Excellent |
It's unsettling, strange and dark; but a beautifully executed show. From a seemingly immature "comic-book" premise, it's quite a thoughtful & realistic affair. While it perhaps doesn't reach as high as it could have, it seems to have been approached as a serious sci-fi drama rather than a mindless action/cheap-thrills show - which it easily could have been. Worth a watch, although it will likely repulse many viewers. |
Gurren Lagann (TV) |
Excellent |
A pretty amazing show; a fusion of well-played cliche and truly imaginative material. I felt it could've ended better - the ending gave the whole experience a bitter aftertaste, to be honest. It was still a brilliant show though. |
Haganai (TV) |
So-so |
Haibane Renmei (TV) |
Masterpiece |
A beautiful, deep and thought-provoking fantasy. Definitely not a series that holds your hand; much of the onus is on the viewer to interpret the content for themselves. I love that kind of thing; utterly brilliant. |
Hanamaru Kindergarten (TV) |

Heaven's Memo Pad (TV) |
So-so |
Hellsing (TV) |
Very good |
On its own merit, it's a fun, brutally violent romp - but the OAVs were better in pretty much every way. I did prefer Seras Victoria's character design in this original series though. |
Hellsing Ultimate (OAV) |
Excellent |
A pointless, immature, testosterone-fueled exercise in brutally violent mayhem. Also completely and totally freakin' AWESOME. Seriously though for the nature of the show it's very well-written and directed; a great production generally. |
Hidamari Sketch (TV) |
Good |
It's definitely got some charm to it, and many moments that'll induce a smile. Extremely light, relaxed, and inoffensive show. Extremely EXTREMELY light. Personally I found myself drifting off and thinking about other things a few times, and I'm generally a very focussed person with a far-higher-than-average attention-span - it was just that... Relaxing. The lightness isn't necessarily a BAD thing about the show (depending on what you're after), although be warned your mileage may vary - my "light" is probably a lot of people's "boring". (If you're one of those folks that find Lucky Star boring, this show will probably put you in a coma near-instantly.) |

His and Her Circumstances (TV) |
Good |
If you're in the mood for a purely character-driven romantic comedy/drama then it'd be hard to overlook this show. There really isn't anything quite like it; for better or worse. No love triangles/squares/polygons/directed-graphs, this is more straightforward in that regard; instead choosing to dive straight into the minds of the two dysfunctional lead characters. Of course this means you need a decent tolerance for self-pitiful teenage monologues, but it's thoughtfully constructed and has a good amount of humour to offset it. This is a classic series, and most definitely worth a watch if you enjoy shows in this genre. Be warned that the ending - the last handful of episodes - are a bit weak, unfortunately. |

K-ON! (TV) |
Good |
The entire show is dedicated to toothache-level over-the-top "cute"/pointlessness. If that doesn't sound like your cup of tea then I'd recommend avoiding it. It doesn't even pretend to be about music (if only BECK had this kind of budget to play with...). You could replace the music with any other club activity and it would still be the same show -- although maybe with less merchandising opportunities... My comments thus far aren't really a complaint; more of a heads-up of what to expect if you watch it. It's moderately entertaining, but there's really not much to it - good for a brain-in-neutral, drama-free break from reality I suppose. |
K-ON!! (TV 2) |
Good |
More of the same; now with even less music. As with the first series, it's a moderately entertaining, fun little time-waster. |
Kamichu! (TV) |
Excellent |
Kannagi: Crazy Shrine Maidens (TV) |
Very good |
Quite enjoyable; I'd like to see a second season when the manga is completed (hopefully that will be possible - both for the sake of the mangaka and the story). |
Kanon (TV 2/2006) |
Excellent |
A moving and beautifully constructed series; definitely a 100% proof tear-jerker. Kanon didn't reach nearly the same emotional levels for me as Clannad though (esp. After Story) - perhaps because the "sad parts" are almost ubiquitous in Kanon, and maybe lose some of their impact for it. Not to say there aren't some shocking and/or very sad moments in Kanon - there most definitely are. It has an uplifting & happy ending though, thankfully. |
Karin (TV) |
Good |
I liked it. The drama in the second half felt a bit forced, but the ending made up for it I thought. Nothing particularly amazing about the series as a whole, but it was a nice, imaginative little fantasy/love story. |
Katanagatari (TV) |

Kaze no Stigma (TV) |

Kimi ni Todoke - From Me to You (TV) |

It's generally heart-warming, with a nice amount of variety in the humour, drama and romance aspects. Sawako's self-doubt monologues can get a bit repetitive, but I suppose that's the point. I really liked the manga, and I thought this anime absolutely did it justice (and then some). Looking forward to the second season! |
Kimi ni Todoke 2nd Season (TV) |

Last Exile (TV) |
Masterpiece |
Visually it is undoubtedly one of the best-looking anime series I've ever seen, and manages to have terrific characters and an intriguing story to boot. Absolutely enthralling. Generally very, very classy. |
Lovely Complex (TV) |
Very good |
A fun, humorous love story that's a bit different in more ways than the obvious. Definitely worth a watch if you like romantic comedies. |
Lucky Star (TV) |
Excellent |
It's hard to quantify exactly what the appeal of this show is. It's one of the most "easy going" comedies I've ever seen (perhaps second only to Hidamari Sketch). Perhaps you could call it "conversational comedy"? I'm not sure. But still, it's a charming, somehow relaxing slowly-paced comedy - sometimes hilarious, oftentimes adorable (much like Azumanga Daioh in that respect). |
Lucky Star OVA |
Very good |
More of the same, really. Not a bad thing. Just wish there was more of the actual show. |
Maid Sama! (TV) |
Weak |
It had its moments; very few of which involved the two lead characters. For supposedly "lead characters" we see almost no character development in them AT ALL over the course of the (twenty-six-freakin-episode) series. My god, it's just a horrible waste of time, IMHO. |
Mars Daybreak (TV) |
Very good |
Although I didn't like the main character at first (he's a bit smug), the whole show slowly grew on me and I was pleasantly surprised overall. It's a solid adventure with a good amount of variety, half-decent characters and story. All-in-all it's quite entertaining and definitely worth checking out. |

Nadia - The Secret of Blue Water (TV) |
Excellent |
Beyond the first handful of episodes, Nadia is - for a show aimed at children, at least - actually quite an involving, dark and suspenseful adventure story. In the lighter moments, the Miyazaki influence is quite clear, and I thought the whole "inspired by 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea" aspect was quite well-done. This is an absolute classic series, and a definite must-see in my opinion. |

Nothing ground-breaking on the whole, but genuinely hilarious and thoroughly entertaining. |
Occult Academy (TV) |
Good |
A hint of greatness in the beginning unfortunately turned to mud in the consequent episodes. Not terrible, not great. Could've been so much more. |
Ōkami-san & Her Seven Companions (TV) |
Decent |
A trope-infested mess. Might have actually been good... If it had a decent antagonist, good writing and (consistently) interesting/entertaining stories. I'm so sick of these bloody "delinquents", all-powerful student council bodies, one-dimensional "evil" antagonists, etcetera etcetera. The protagonists are a mixed bag, but most are somewhat interesting. Not a complete loss; the more light-hearted segments (which are reasonably pervasive) are entertaining enough. The rest is laughably bad. |
Oreimo (TV) |
Good |
This show would've been considerably better if Kirino and Ayase weren't in it. Essentially a broken show with redeeming qualities. Many of the secondary characters are infinitely more interesting (and/or tolerable) than the leads. |
Pale Cocoon (OAV) |
Very good |
Pani Poni Dash! (TV) |
Decent |
While it was definitely amusing, I'm pretty sure I only "got" maybe a quarter of the jokes/references. I found it really hard to keep up, to be honest. Unfortunately looking up the references doesn't make the jokes funny-in-retrospect. =( |
Paprika (movie) |

Passage of the Stars - Birth (special) |
Good |
(The) Place Promised in Our Early Days (movie) |
Good |
Gorgeous, but ultimately unsatisfying. Felt to me like the first half of a bigger movie (just stretched out to feature-length). This doesn't just leave loose-ends, it leaves the whole story (stories?) hanging. It's bizarre. |
Planetes (TV) |
Excellent |
While I was disappointed at the maturity level of the characters at times - which limited my ability to take it seriously - it was still a solid show, and certainly one of the better sci-fi anime series that I've seen. As far as I can recall, this is the only "hard" sci-fi anime I've ever seen (or at least the closest to one), so it deserves some extra kudos for that. |

Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles (U.S. OAV) |
Very good |
Really quite good, actually. Stands alone quite well even without prior knowledge of Robotech. I quite like the Robotech plot, even if the series was - in retrospect - pretty hilariously terrible. Anyway; this movie is definitely worth checking out on its own merit. I hope they get on with making the 2nd one... |
Rosario + Vampire (TV) |
Not really good |
Rozen Maiden (TV) |
Decent |
I didn't mind it; it was strange and somewhat interesting, but I couldn't shake the feeling that it was a bit... odd. The feel of the show - even its characters - seemed inconsistent with its own basic premise. Still, I guess it was certainly fairly unique - definitely not a "genre X, made for demographic Y"-type deal. |
Rozen Maiden: Ouvertüre (special) |
Good |
Rurouni Kenshin (TV 1996) |

Rurouni Kenshin: Reflection (OAV) |
Bad |
I really didn't like this one. Artistically speaking it was absolutely brilliant, but the jarring shift in tone between this and the original series was just too much. It's difficult to take the film on its own merits since it relies so heavily on material from the series (or specifically their re-interpretation of said material). Thankfully the style of this show was so markedly different that it's easily disassociated in my mind from the original series (which I quite enjoyed). |
(The) Sacred Blacksmith (TV) |
So-so |
The story might have had some degree of potential, but as a whole the anime is predictable, cliche and dull. |
Samurai Deeper Kyo (TV) |
Decent |
Pretty dull and stupid overall, but good for some mindless action I suppose. |

Serial Experiments Lain (TV) |
Very good |
Like Haibane Renmei, this show doesn't hold your hand - it's almost entirely left up to the viewer to interpret the content. You will likely only find the show rewarding if you're willing to open your mind put some serious thought in. Others will pin this as "weird" and be done with it, which I think is a shame. |
Shakugan no Shana (TV) |
Very good |
Shana somehow manages to be actually quite a good show despite being quite derivative and even generic on face-value. I really didn't think I'd like it as much as I do. |
Shakugan no Shana S (OAV) |
Very good |
While the first 2 episodes do contribute to the wider plot in terms of character development, they're pretty whimsical. The second two, however, give us something new: Shana during her days as a Flame Haze, some time before she met Yuji. It's pretty awesome. It feels as though this series is only just hitting its stride, even though I quite liked the previous seasons. Quite looking forward to the 3rd season! |
Shakugan no Shana Second (TV) |
Very good |
I enjoyed the first series, and this one only improved my opinion of the show. It managed to surprise me a few times, which - even after seeing the first season - I really didn't expect. |
Shakugan no Shana SP: Koi to Onsen no Kōgai Gakushū! (OAV) |
Very good |
The obligatory hot-spring episode, thoughtfully separated from the actual series. Good for a laugh, mostly harmless etc. |
Sky Blue (Korean movie) |
Very good |
I really liked this one; a unique, well-executed visual style and a pretty solid story make for quite a good action-adventure sci-fi movie. It's not particularly ground-breaking or anything, but definitely worth taking the time to see. |
Someday's Dreamers (TV) |
Good |
Soul Eater (TV) |
Excellent |
Probably the best show of its type that I've seen. Super stylish, and quite imaginative (especially visually). I thoroughly enjoyed it. I liked the contrast between the sharp, brightly coloured visuals and the (quite) dark subject material. The ending could've been handled better I think, but it wasn't a deal-breaker. |
Spice and Wolf (TV) |
Excellent |
I really love this show. It has a distinct charm to it, like an old fairy tale. It's refreshing and uplifting, and a wonderfully intelligent love story. Extracting drama (mostly) from the day-to-day dealings of a travelling merchant doesn't sound like a recipe for suspense, but I found myself utterly enthralled. |
Spice and Wolf II (TV) |
Excellent |
Just as good as the first series, but with better art and more intense drama. The drama in the show is really, really well executed; I found myself heavily involved in it all. I can't wait to see the next chapter in this wonderful story. |
Spirited Away (movie) |

Spriggan (movie) |

Squid Girl (TV) |
Excellent |
Hilarious and adorable; mostly harmless as they say. Shows with genuine charm are few and far in between, but Ika Musume has it down. Can't wait to see more! |
Squid Girl Season 2 (TV) |
Excellent |
Steamboy (movie) |
Good |
The art was (of course) absolutely stunning, but I just didn't find it a very "likable" movie. It was good - definitely worth seeing, if just for the art - but it wasn't brilliant. |
Strait Jacket (OAV) |
Decent |
Student Council's Discretion (TV) |
So-so |
Pretty silly. Kind of funny. Yeah. |
Summer Wars (movie) |
Excellent |
It was great; a really solid, highly enjoyable movie. Perhaps a little too much coincidence in the plot (even for a "summer movie"), but no big deal. Definitely a must-own. |
Tamayura (OAV) |
Very good |
Tamayura - Hitotose (TV) |
Good |
Tenchi Muyo! War on Geminar (OAV) |
Very good |
Silly and a little crass (but hardly risqué by anime standards), I must admit that overall I quite enjoyed this. It's the only one of these "harem" shows I've seen that I haven't been completely physically repulsed by. The main character may be a little simple, but at least he's not cowardly or useless. So long as you take it for what it is; a silly fanservice-y action adventure, you might enjoy it. The story is light but passable, the light-hearted bits are quite fun, and the action is pretty darn good. |
Time of Eve (ONA) |
Excellent |
Absolutely fantastic. I WANT MORE OF THIS. (Please.) |
Toradora! (TV) |
Excellent |
I really liked Toradora; it's most definitely a cut (or several cuts) above your typical high-school romantic comedy/drama. I thought the writing was terrific - the characters were far more complex than I had initially expected, and I really enjoyed the story. Two thumbs up. |
Trigun (TV) |
Very good |
While it has that tonal psychophrenia that some anime suffers from - a lot of lighthearted slapstick for the first half, then mostly dark, violent drama in the second - it's still a thoroughly entertaining series. |
Trigun: Badlands Rumble (movie) |
Excellent |
Trinity Blood (TV) |
So-so |
Really not that great, but I've certainly seen worse. It's all tried and true; to me it felt like a mash-up of Trigun & Hellsing, with maybe a bit of Witch Hunter Robin thrown in - but it's not nearly as cool as that might sound. It had a reasonably sound but hardly extraordinary plot, half-decent characters, and was definitely a solid production - even if I'm not the biggest fan of the character designs. Possibly worth a look - you could certainly do worse. Then again you could do a lot better too. |
Valkyria Chronicles (TV) |
Good |
Alicia and Welkin were - at least at times - incredibly annoying. That aside, this was a pleasant surprise overall. It did feel a bit rushed at times (especially the ending), but still a pretty solid production - certainly better than I thought it would be, but not quite as good as I'd hoped. I understand why they deviated from the game's writing to the degree they did, but I didn't appreciate a number of the changes, to be honest. |
Vexille - 2077 Isolation of Japan (movie) |
Good |
Wagnaria!! (TV) |
Very good |
A lot of fun; looking forward to the next season! |
Wagnaria!!2 (TV) |
Very good |
Welcome to the NHK (TV) |
Excellent |
A fairly confronting, adult-oriented series, with a twisted (but honest) sense of humour which I liked. I found it quite uplifting in the end as the various sub-plots are resolved. |
Whisper of the Heart (movie) |
Excellent |
Perhaps my favourite Miyazaki movie. It's wonderfully uplifting and inspiring. |
Witch Hunter Robin (TV) |
Excellent |
Full of intrigue, suspense and mystery, this is generally a very high-quality series. It reminds me vaguely of the X-Files somehow (specifically the supernatural episodes) - the atmospheric, mysterious world with an ever-present suggestion of conspiracy might've helped there. Somewhat ill-fitting comparisons aside, Witch Hunter Robin is a refreshingly mature, well-written, largely stereotype-free supernatural mystery thriller; in other words - somewhat of a rare beast. |
Wolf's Rain (TV) |
Very good |
Wolf's Rain is a nicely atmospheric adventure, and generally a pretty classy production all-round. The setpieces were fairly tried-and-true, nothing too surprising, but still of a good quality. |
Wolf's Rain (OAV) |
Good |
A bit of a let-down. It's hard to talk about specifics without spoiling it completely, but I didn't care for it. It was OK, if overdone, but the finale just felt a bit cheap to me. |
(The) World God Only Knows (TV) |
Excellent |
Considering the premise of this show, I really doubted it would be any good. But it was good; excellent, in fact. I felt it would've been more interesting if the female characters were more realistic; rather than being - well - barely more than bog standard anime cliches. That aside I really enjoyed it; it's really much better than it ever deserved to be. Classy production all-round. |
