I've seen the first three episodes so far (I watch anime slowly). I'm hoping it will improve. I guess I'm enjoying it, but really for the wrong reasons. I enjoyed the .hack game, watching as my girlfriend played through it (I'm not a gamer myself), and so seeing the elements from the game in anime form is pretty cool. But I have trouble seeing how anyone not familiar with the game could enjoy this show.
The plot is confusing, and quite frankly, boring. Not to mention that it makes The World seem like the most staggeringly dull MMORPG ever invented. The root towns seem curiously empty. What players there are seem to do nothing but sit around and talk. The actual gameplay, i.e. teaming up to explore dungeons and fight monsters, is missing from eps 1-3, unless you count a 10-second scene with Mimiru fighting a generic-looking monster by herself. Considering that this is a game, shouldn't there be some people having fun?? Anne and I have both chuckled over several instances where the scene cuts directly to a sole player in front of the Gott statue at the bottom of a dungeon, conveniently skipping over how he made it there. Killed several dozen monsters all by yourself, huh? It's way too early for me to cast judgement, but this series has sucked so far. I'm hoping it improves, because I really like the idea. ------RM |

To be honest, that's how MMORPGs are. It's not like a PS2 game where you're always doing something. People are sitting in towns waiting for stuff. Waiting for monsters to spawn, or waiting for their friends to logon, or (in some games) they look like they are standing around but they are really smithing or something. It's not like you're constantly running around.
.hack//SIGN is rather quite accurate in the portrayal of how an MMORPG works. (Yes, I'm married to a gamer. Yes, he plays or has played just about every MMORPG out there....) |

Actually, that's incorrect. While it may be true that the anime made it to Japanese TV before the game was released, all three elements of .hack (TV, game, OAV) were conceived simultaneously, and the game is considered the central part. This according to interviews with the .hack creators on the OAV disc. Again, I can't really see how this anime can be enjoyable unless you already understand the game, so it's not that great of a "setup" in my book. ------RM |

Actually, I wasn't wildly enthused about it the first two or three episodes either, but things definitely pick up in episode 4, IMO. There's some information on Tsukasa that gives readers the opportunity to know him better, as well as really twist the plot in a new direction. I won't say it's the best thing ever, but it does improve drastically, I think.

Uh, isn't Tsukasa's gender still ambiguous at this point... You can't refer to Tsukasa as "he" or "she" yet. Tsukasa claims to be a male player, but others suspect that Tsukasa is female. Even during the opening credits it's made ambiguous (the part where everyone is suddenly becoming naked).

I had the same problem you did, LR. As I watching the first three episodes I was like "You got to be f---ing kidding me!", it all seemed liek it was not going anywhere, however episode 4 the show decides to get out of nuetral and shift to second gear.

I'm not impressed either. That's not to say there aren't some interesting elements, but I don't think it is enough to validate all the hype that was given to it. I'm not a gamer, though.
I also find the same problem with FLCL DVD #1 (where's the plot? Or maybe I'm just tired of unempathetic characters) and even the first episode of Noir is a bit difficult for me to get through. Perhaps all these series improve, but I've learned my lesson about buying on the first tide of hype. ![]() |

What channel do you get this on, is it local, satellite or did you rent it? I checked Cartoon Network's website and they don't have any info on it yet (they have a picture) and I didn't see it in their schedule either.
I'm rather curious about this new .hack//infection game and they say it's better if you see the anime first. |

It's on Cartoon Network during their seven-hour Saturday night Video Entertainment System block (7 p.m. to 2 a.m.). .hack//SIGN plays at midnight.

You could just tape it, you know. That's what I do. I never watch anything live anymore. I just tape everything and watch it at a more convenient time.

Yeah and I do tape DBZ often cause I don't get home from work in time, but actually midnight might be the most convenient time as it is anyway. I was just referring to how a lot of the good stuff (Inuyasha, Cowboy Bebop, etc.) is always on so late. Even the local PBS shows anime late at night, when it show it that is.
It better than it used to be though, with Toonami and the International Channel showing anime at respectable times during the week. |
