My first horror - usually I cannot get into such stories. Horror often comes off to me as bland, easy scares and such. I really enjoyed Another. You should be patient though: the story really takes some time to set up. The background and ending credit music are very good (the OP is awful haha) and the animation and art pleasing to the eye. Some things that happen may look unbelievable and odd when you first see it, but in the end most things are properly explained and happen with a reason. It's really fun to try to solve the mystery. |

This is easily one of the most exciting shows I have ever seen. It has lots of dramatic (and gory, behold!) moments, awesomely choreographed fights, good music, a distinct artistic style and I loved the characters. Some go through some tough character development. The pacing was a bit slow sometimes, though I didn't mind the recaps as much: I could easily skip them if I wanted to. The show also tended to be a bit too over the top in its drama. |

(The) Beast Player Erin (TV) |
Very good |
It took me a couple of episodes to really get into this series, but after a certain point, I was hooked. Erin shines as the protagonist in this show as a smart kid turning into a woman. The artistry of this series is certainly very different and the music is, the 2nd opening excluded, outstanding. The songs are a bit overused, but that's no real crime. While Beast Player Erin looks a bit like a children's anime, it is pretty dark. Its subjects are, besides the maturing Erin, also war, ethics, drama and politics. The series therefore isn't just light and fun, it's also a suspenseful and dramatic series. Speaking of light and fun - and hereby the series' weakpoint: two secondary characters meant for comedic relief aren't really that funny and sometimes annoying. If you can get past that, I can really recommend it. The show is also a bit too slowly paced. |

Great show, with action, humor, intelligence and a gripping storyline. Blast of Tempest is certainly as dramatic as Shakespeare, dramatic music included, but it is never afraid to poke fun at itself. Believable romance story, where Yano and Nanami have to deal with the highs and lows of a relationship. Nanami already notices early on that Yano isn't always the sociable, relaxed guy he shows to the world. His past proves to be the source of their biggest problems.
The downside of this anime is the pacing - getting slower and slower in the latter half of the series. It is also hard to continue, as the mood gets more depressing by the episode and the same problems keep returning without really being resolved. The animation is very sparse, sometimes it seems that even drawing both eyes was a hassle to the creative staff. The music is appropriate and there are multiple ending songs. |

Death Note had me on the edge of my seat within the first two episodes. While the last third of the series is not as awesome as the episodes before it, it remains a suspenseful, thrilling anime with a satisfying ending. Dragon Ball Z (TV) |
Good |
Nostalgia button: ON! This was the series I watched religiously when I was young, not knowing what anime was. The tension, the ongoing story, the light moments - yup, I was hooked. Nothing like it (in terms of animation series) existed on tv. Of course, everybody knows this series has its flaws. The pacing and stretched out episodes (which is better in DB Kai, I hear) can make you groan sometimes. DBZ is not known for his artistry and awesome animation either. It's a typical shonen series and not very deep.
I have to give the series credit for some things. A. I haven't watched a single episode of it's predecessor, but it's easy to understand from the very beginning. B. The series actually has some character development (Vegeta) and C. It does have it's surprise moments. So sometimes, when in the mood, I have to watch some episodes again. |

Dusk maiden of Amnesia (TV) |

Though set in an eerie supernatural atmosphere, this show is essentially a mix between a romance, a dark, dramatic past that has not been properly dealt with and comedy. While there is a big horror element to this show, you shouldn't expect too much from it. You'll be disappointed if you're looking for a second 'Another'.
Characters: I liked the leads. Beautiful female lead Yuuko is playful and sexy but has no memories of her past and while Niiya does tend to be a bit thrown back by Yuuko's shameless nudity, he's no push over. What did irk me was that there we so few characters and their world very small - never do we explore the world outside the schoolgrounds. Niiya doesn't seem to be having any friends nor important family outside the club of four people. From the two important secondary characters, Kirie is the best written one, with some genuine development. While Momoe does show some emotional maturity later on, she is essentially played as a comedic device. Opinions differ in how effective the comedy is, but it didn't really work for me. It is also odd that they all had to have a romantic interest in Niiya, thus suggesting a harem element. I have to admit, they had valid reasons for liking him and it was sometimes convenient for the story, but for anime fans who've grown allergic to harem elements it can be a bit annoying. The last thing I have to comment on is the boob grabbing. It isn't a bad thing when done once or twice and the act of 'touching' had real meaning in this show, but if you really want to put in some sexiness in a series, be a bit more original. Stroking someone's neck, back or leg is also alluring.
Story: I have never seen someone label this show as slowly paced, but I felt it was. I felt impatient waiting for the meat of the story; which was finding out the truth behind 'the shadow' Kirie noticed multiple times and why Yuuko lost her memories and exactly what those memories were. By the time they showed Yuuko's backstory though, I didn't feel as though there were many surprises, as if I already knew what happened to her. It was very emotional though. The romance part was really well done. The very end is a bit of a letdown - but I won't spoil you on that one. The music and art are very well done and set the mood.
In summary, I enjoyed this show because of the well done romance and drama. I could see why people loved it to death (heh), but I was expecting more of the horror elements. The comedy Momoe provided didn't really click with me and I felt the world building to be too small. Also, some elements felt a bit cliched. |

This show is set in the future, where human beings have acquired psychic powers. People now live in small towns and the world looks different - less advanced and with different life forms. We follow the story of Saki and her friends, who gradually find out what dangers, strict rules and moral ambiguities exist in their seemingly peaceful world.
It's a fantastical, intelligent story and a generally well told one. This show is thought-provoking and certainly for the people who like to get philosophical. It brings a lot of important themes about humanity and society, great for discussion. The music and atmosphere are good. The pacing of this show could have been better at times, sometimes being too slow or too fast, skipping years. It also manifests in the viewer not really caring for certain events, because only afterwards is explained what importance someone or something had in relation to the protagonist(s). I heard some scenes have been redrawn for the release of the show, but that wasn't a real flaw to me.
I would recommend this series to just about anyone and found it a rewarding experience. I assure you I'm not spoiling anything by saying this, but the final episodes are really well done. |
Fruits Basket (TV 1/2001) |

One of my first anime back when I actually learned what anime was (about 16 years old). Poor Tohru lost both her parents and doesn't want to trouble her family during the renovation of grandpa's house (IIRC), so she decides to live in a tent. She meets the Sohma family, where she's allowed to stay. However, the Sohma's have a lot of hidden drama and mystery...
This anime is still dear to me. It has a mix of excellent drama, comedy and some mystery around the Sohma family. Unfortunately the romance part of Fruits Basket is not in the anime - it is implied as a maybe for the future, that's about it. The biggest problem of Fruits Basket is that it stopped, leaving a big part of the original manga story untold. I would still recommend it though, you shouldn't miss it! |

One of the best dystopian anime, with lovely main leads who know how to make good memories in any dire situation. I also would've liked it if they'd animated the whole story (okay, they did make a nice ED song). |
Golden Time (TV) |
Good |
An excellent series with plenty of comedy, drama and well written characters. I laughed out loud multiple times and loved how realistic the conversations and quarrels were at times. The characters are mature enough to actually talk to each other about their problems and sort things out instead of staying quiet, giving hints and go into miscommunication mode. Unfortunately somebody decided this series needed a supernatural element, which didn't mesh well. It also takes some time before the main relationship starts to feel real. |

This show runs on cuteness, but doesn't deliver much on the girls developing their music skills. The climax also left something to wish for with the endless talking. However - I think this is a show that remains enjoyable after multiple viewings and set up an engaging tale about an extraordinary family. |

A lot has been said about Naruto, a popular, but - because of that - also popular to hate series. As one of my gateway anime, I found it hard to like at first. Why? Well, that's mostly because of the second episode, which is a bit pointless. The first episode is also quick with the drama, which didn't sink in (if that's the right way to describe it). After that, the story really picks up, with introducing the other important characters: Sasuke, Sakura and Kakashi. Sasuke and Naruto don't get along very well, but do become friends - and one of the most famous rivals seen in anime. The first mission starts and is a masterpiece arc in itself. O boy, I cried so much and so often! So, nice drama, action and some comedy. After that, being a shounen series, it gets into some kind of tournament, introduces villains, and eventually the overall big plot becomes clear. The weakness of Naruto is mostly the fillers after ~ ep 136, but those are easy to skip. Naruto's strength is also in flashbacks, but they are used a bit too often. Some won't like Naruto's character either. There are some pacing problems, especially during one fight, where two characters stay in the same position for multiple episodes! Overall, I think the series gets too much hate. It's a fine shonen series. |
Naruto Shippūden (TV) |
Decent |
I gave this sequel the same rating as the original show. There are some differences however. Some arcs are masterpieces: in story, animation, drama, the whole execution. Then there are fillers and arcs with serious pacing problems (too slow). These slow arcs are especially in the first part of Shippuuden, so patience is needed ;). Another weakness is that Naruto and Sakura seem too desperado in their search for Sasuke. I do look forward to seeing more, I haven't gotten tired of it after so many years. |

The main reason I continued watching is because the main lead guy is actually a decent nice character. The girls in this harem romcom all had big flaws. Chitoge is a very violent tsundere and only at the end softens up a tiny bit - a tough learner for sure. The other girls are either too cowardly, change themselves into a completely different personality to gain favor or are just there to fulfill their character roles. The amount of cliches and tasteless fanservice in this series is daunting. Shafts visual style is pleasing to the eye though. |

Some things Yato struggled with have already been shown in the first season, but this one delves deeper into Yato's character and shows us what's behind his goofy exterior. Awesome animation, excellent music, drama and romance. |
Sakura Trick (TV) |
So-so |
It was refreshing to see anime characters that aren't too embarassed to do anything besides staring at each other. We got many kisses, that's for sure. The ending was done quite well too.
But... if you want to make an anime romance / slice of life, the other parts have to be good too to make up for the lack of story.
Humor: ineffective, I probably faintly smiled a few times, but that's it.
Drama: also ineffective. They only briefly mentioned the problems Kotone and Shizuku faced during the beach episode, but they didn't get much time to shine. The final episode didn't do anything for them. Mitsuki not recognizing her feelings of love and being the third wheel have been done a zillion times, but at least those plotlines got some closure.
Characters: Yuu progressed in the sense of being more forward about her feelings, but she had an increasingly annoying streak to her. Like in the final episode, where she didn't want to fetch a spoon herself. How is that cute?
The big sister got some development at the very end, but before that she was an annoying cliche character, if you ask me.
Yuri/shoujo romance: This is probably why I actually continued watching this, as a guilty pleasure. I guess you can't really call this yuri though, since it was pretty tame apart from some suggestive poses and french kissing. In the middle episode there were barely any truly romantic and physical scenes. Nothing else really entertained me, so I was really bored.
The story about the school closing wasn't very effective either. It's meant to be a setup for melancholy feelings, I'm sure, but most of the characters don't graduate yet (and don't leave the school) and the only one we're supposed to really like is the school president. Why did they even put that in in the first place??
I hesitated whether to give this one a Decent or So-So. If you look at what the shoujo-ai/yuri genre has to offer, it is one of the better titles. If you don't take that thought into account though, it's not really that special. I do hope that there will be more titles like this that don't shy away from showing characters romantically interacting with each other instead of being too embarassed to do anything.

Well directed show with a colorful cast of characters, interesting from beginning to end. Also, Reina's development (and friendship with Kousaka) is awesome. Loved the music and the realistic struggles the band members face trying to make their band and each character's skills flourish. |

A delightful comedy. Warning: If you're in a very deep winter depression, this series won't help. It's setting is the sunny beach, you'll long for summer even more :D! |

This series takes some episodes to get into, since it takes a while before you're able to care about the characters and the drama kicks in. When it gets to the good part, it's consistently engaging though. |

I believe this attempt to make a realistic disaster anime is a superb one. The characters feel like real people to me. The ending was a bit long winded. The drama was really well done. |
Toradora! (TV) |
Excellent |
Toradora! was hilarious, romantic, sometimes sad, optimistic and had some complicated conflicts between characters. |
A Town Where You Live (TV) |
Weak |
I've heard that the source material was better. The story wasn't very original, which isn't a big deal - but somehow the execution wasn't very good either. I didn't care about the characters very much and the story seemed rushed. |

The first anime I've seen that tackles issues about gender identity in a serious way. The series has complex characters, nice animation and music. In the end it unfortunately sped up quite a bit. In the first episodes it was kind of hard to find out who's who. |
WATAMOTE (TV) |
Very good |
In this dark comedy, we follow the harsh life of a nerdy high school girl who can't seem to fit in - she wonders constantly why she's not popular. She has serious issues regarding making social contact and she herself is her worst enemy. The show is painful to watch at times even when it's making jokes, especially if you have been in the same situations before. Tomoko's character is done really well; you're able to feel sympathy for her, even though her less sympathetic sides are glaringly obvious to the viewer. Tomoko tries to make progress, but only takes baby steps in the course of these 12 episodes and there are many dark moments and failures. So, even though the comedy is good and it's a realistic take on social anxiety, it's hard to watch this series as it is hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel. I wished she would've progressed more. |

Wolf Girl & Black Prince (TV) |
Good |
Two equally flawed people, liar Erika and sadistic Kyoya, who totally deserve each other. The show is set deeply in cliched territory and premise - but plays with these clichés as well. The show doesn't end with 'they will end up with each other', no: these flawed people have to actually learn how to make their relationship work. I like how both sides need to give and take (Erika loves clichés but Kyoya utterly hates them) and adjust their unrealistic views of a relationship. |
(The) World Is Still Beautiful (TV) |
Decent |
This show starts of masterfully with a strong (singing) princess from a small, not that rich country setting foot in new land and showing everybody just how awesome a woman she is. Her fateful meeting with the king of the other country sets up an interesting relationship between two people with a different age, personality and background.
Only... the show isn't so good with secondary characters. Cliche after cliche walks in to make me moan and not care about what happens to them. The 'Tender Rain' song is overused. I even didn't think the relationship between the main duo was done that well. Still, Nike (the princess) remains awesome. |
Yona of the Dawn (TV) |
Very good |
Going from 'Ah, this might be pretty interesting' to 'GIVE ME MOAR', this show grew on me episode by episode. Yona starts as a damsel in distress, but soon gets a fiery strong character and builds up her pretty boy harem ;) to fight for what she believes in. After each addition of important characters, the show gets better (especially with the green-haired dragon). The Suu-won arc was a bit low and less good. This desperately needs second season. |
