For those unfamiliar with the international/European comic scene, the prestigious Angoulême festival is held once a year to honor the very best comics (European, Japanese, American, you name it) released in France; the most common comparison is to the Cannes Film Festival. In any case, various diffrent manga titles have been nominated in the past (this year alone saw about ten entries) and a few titles have won various achievement prizes in the past (Jiro Taniguchi won something a few years back), but for the first time ever a manga, Non Non Bâ by Shigeru Mizuki, has won "Best Comic of the Year." Pretty big achievement, especially when you consider just how good the other nominees were (and those are just the ones I've read in English). Mizuki's art is pretty amazing, with a real cartoony, almost underground feel to it, and the story obviously is great, so hopefully Ponent Mon will snag the licence for US distribution sometime this year.
