I've found some anime dvds I want to buy, but they are region 2 (from japan). I don't have a dvd player, but both of my computers play dvds. I just want to know if anyone has played region 2 on their computer and are there any codecs I should download?

[EDIT: Moved into the Retail forum. -TK]

You don't download anything. And if you could, we can't tell you on this site anyway (since it might be illegal).

Normally, you buy a player that can play different regions. There are plenty of DVD ROMs out there that you can program to do so. However, some of them aren't always permanent and only let you switch the region setting a few times until it stays that way.

I'd recommend you find a DVD player that can play all of them. Mine is all-region and can play mp3s, display jpegs, and even play most DivX files. Although, my player is from some no name company, so you may want to look around a bit.

Here is an old thread I made a while back about region coding. Take a look and see if you can find a solution in there as well.

What I did for my R2 DVD player, I bought a cheapie $30 DVD Player from Walmart, and found a code to punch in to change the region settings on it. It wasn't expensive, and it plays my DVD's just fine. You can search compatible DVD players on this website: http://www.dvdcodes.net/

Be wary, that not all R2 DVD Players carry subtitles, you should check for that, if you're relying on subtitles that is.

I know it doesn't come with subs and I don't really care since it's good incentive for me to learn japanese Very Happy, but I was thinking of letting a fansub group take care of the subbing. I checked on the anime and it's not licensed. I just want to be ready for any problems that might come up since I'm going to be out $54 per dvd. I looked on the link tony gave me and I do have a flat ps2 so I'm going to check for that disc the other memebers mentioned that would let the ps2 play dvds from other regions.

I watch other region DVDs by burning the DVD itself and making the disc itself region free. I saw the legit 2 disc Initial D movie at my local anime shop, and decided to pick it up. When I got home, I realized it didn't play on my laptop, desktop, portable DVD player, PS2, or the DVD player in the living room... I was upset, but then I remembered that the burning program I use, I don't want to risk listing it cause I don't know if the program is illegal, always asks me what region the DVDs are from so they can be made region-free. Anyways the burnt copy works fine.

I took a look at my portable DVD player, and it says it plays DVD's. That's it. But I've played both region 1 and R2, so I'm assuming it's an all region DVD. But if you go to a Japanese store in like Costa Mesa or Little Tokyo, then they'll have all region DVD players.
