I have to disagree that this is just an isekai version of 100 Girlfriends because Haruka puts all his effort into ditching any girls who are interested in him instead of accommodating them.

Otherwise I mostly agree with Jeremy's criticisms. Only a cute ED and an uncharacteristically strong last episode saved it from being the lowest-rated of all series I finished last year.

In my eyes, it was a solid no-brainer show. Good enough to follow through. Nothing you need to think over philosophically. Out of the 47 shows I have watched last year, I would have ranked it somewhere around #35. It was by far not the worst show for me but by far also not the best.

I do believe your review was a bit superficial when you try to compare it to 100 Girlfriends.
You miss the premise of the show and it's story but it's not really your fault.
The anime only covers the 1st 2 light novels but the studio did change the last several episodes to tie up the show at a stopping point most likely with the understanding that there would not be a 2nd season.
The female classmates are never any of his love interests, they are just girls he wishes to protect which is why he went alone to take out his fellow classmate who killed the male delinquents so the girls would be safe.
As the story continues in the light novels his love interest is Angela the former dungeon emperor. Oh course the story does become quite 18+

For my sins - and I think I was drunk - I read a few of the light novels.

The review of the anime is pretty fair. It's not great. The light novels aren't great either, but they are better than the anime would suggest. This is one of those stories that, to put it mildly, takes a while to find its pace.

As per JWR10X's post, this is basically an anti-harem show. Haruka never touches any of his classmates and never even seems to like them much. He does find a single romantic (or at least, sexual) partner and more or less sticks to her, but that happens just as the anime is ending (it's Ms. Dungeon Rep).

The LNs are a bit weird and essentially hinge on the dichotomy between how Haruka sees things (reincarnated in a world filled with monsters and ugly old guys, with the occasional hot babe to spice things up) and how everybody else sees things (a big, grand adventure). As such, it's probably adjacent to shows like Let This Grieving Soul Retire.

I haven't kept up with the anime, as it is on H-Dive, and I have Crunchyroll, Amazon, and Netflix. So I can't speak to the anime per se.

The light novel series does grow on you. And it is one of my favorites. Really, it is the silliness of the character and his actions that make this series good.

It was quite a wavy show. As in the quality of its story telling waved up and down.

- The first two episodes had a strong loner vibe, which was interesting to see where it went.
- No where is where it went as the next two episodes did nothing but remove its concept and make its battle system incomprehensible.
- Following that there was the building mystery of the murderer which peaked some interest, the fight kinda killed those interests though as the drama of the main characters fight was undercut by the undefined combat, resulting in back and forth using a magic attack that appeared effective and then wasnt. The most interesting thing was the question of did the MC kill the bad guy. It seemed like he didn't but I went and confirmed from people who read the LN that he was dead.
- Aftermath of the fight just proved how much of the groups actually included the MC as a friend. Which was kind of adorable and charming.
- The dungeon overflowing seemed like it could offer a potential puzzle of struggle, but then the MC went and destroyed the waves without trying.
- Then the question became how will he solve the problem of the dungeon getting worse and worse if he doesnt kill the dungeon leader. Ooh tension and drama regarding one of its characters. This was new.
- Turned out they ignored the problem and hand waved that the dungeon leader just had to tell them to stop and the last 2 episodes of tension only existed so the dungeon leader could look cool in front of everyone, they could of solved all issues at the start of the 2nd wave, but chose not to so the story could pretend to be exciting.

The show was mostly favoured by a light amount of functional but not over done fan service (as a reference to its semi-pornographic web novel and wink wink nudge nudge light novel) and its lead character enthusiasm being fun to watch. But its pretence at depth while avoiding any actual thoughts undercut it often.

and as an generic isekai MC, he may not be the best, but he's a hell of a lot better than some of the more well known isekai MCs!

especially the so called anti hero isekai types ala cid or naofumi where the latter does a lot of questionable things that have a tendency to be very much disliked within the anime community. especially among the JLIST & MAL community!

also, it indeed do get better in the LNs, but i fear anime only viewers will have to "read the books, kids!" if they want to know more!

Well, I would read the novels if they were a) to be published in my region in a language I actually can speak and understand or b) not too expensive to get.

For example, I tried to get the Classroom of the Elite novels in English language but as some of them were not purchaseable in my region so I looked up for overseas shops which have them in stock only to see that most charge 50 USD for shipping alone, so a single book would have been 60 to 70 bucks. Now, the novels get a release in my region fortunately.
