In addition to the comics thread I woul like to see what literature my fellow fans are into.
The best thing I've read since the summer has been George R Martin's A Game of Thrones. It's a dark fantasy that I would recomend to anyone who loved the politics, content, strong characters, and an author's willingness to kill off important people in suprising ways. A little warning to people who head into this story looking for a Beserk, it's a slow title. The book is roughly 900 pages long and starts out exciting but with little action. [This is off topic but I will allow it. Don't think this means I'll allow a similar topic. -t] |

I just recently finished reading the Pagan Chronicles by Catherine Jinks. This four volume YA historical fiction series is set in Jerusalem and France right around the time of the Crusades (1187–1209). I'd seen this series more than once in the university bookstore, but since I don't normally read historical fiction and since I had a college student's limited budget I kept passing this series up for things I was more familiar with. Last week I finally borrowed this series from the public library, and I read all four books over the course of five days. They are maturely written, and the main character has a sarcastic charm about his narrative that makes the whole story very engaging. The entire series is now on the list of books I need to add to my personal library.
I've also been reading the Mageworld books by Debra Doyle and James D. Macdonald. This series blends fantasy and science fiction in a wonderful way, and the characters are a whole lot of fun. Unfortunately, most of the series is out of print, although it's been fairly easy for me to find copies to add to my own library. Since I tend to be a voracious reader I find it difficult to keep accurate lists of what I'm reading. At any given point I will be involved in 10+ different manga series in addition to the 4-5 novels I'm reading (plus a handful of ongoing non-fiction reads). ~Shadrach Anki |

I've been reading the Star Wars Jedi Quest Series, as well as I am the Cheese by Robert Corimer, Shoeless Joe by Kinsella, and Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom.

Well for me i've been reading stuff basically thats within my interests. As such i've only read Lord Of The Rings: Fellowship Of The Ring, The Two Towers and Return Of The King as well as The Silmarillion and The Unifinished Tales. As well I've read Magic The Gathering novels relating to expansion sets that were released. As well i've also read the Harry Potter novels.............don't make fun of me....they're cool.

i have just finished star wars shatterpoint recently. i recommend this novel for any star wars fans or those who like deep philosophy stuff. unlike many star wars novels, this one has strong philosophy and psychological elements which is very interesting to read.

Is it really that good? I am a Star Wars fan unlike my good friend who is a fanatic who actually pointed out an error in the fight between Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker. Funny thing my doctor found out I like Star Wars and prescribed it to me  .

I'm re-reading (for the umteenth time) David Weber's Honor Harrington series. Wonderful books! Even though Weber gets just a little bit technical on his descriptions of ships (Military types), missiles and other techie things. But if you read the books often enough like I have, and aren't interested in the tech, you know what pages to skim.

If you don't know, this is the book that inspired, among other things: "Monkey King" by Osamu Tezuka "Saiyuki" Kazuya Minekura and of course "Dragon Ball" by Akira Toriyama |

Out of curiosity which version, the original or the shortened one? While I greatly enjoyed it, there were quite a few parts in the 100 chapter epic that made me wish I had gone with the version called "Monkey". Right now I'm reading White Oleander which is suprisingly good (I got the impression coming into it that it was a made-for-Lifetime story.) |

I like Honor Harrington novels, too (Except for the teeny bit of romance in it...being in love with a married man? Honor Harrington doesn't need that kind of awkward romance  )
Currently, I'm reading ○マ(Kyo Kara Maou) series, Saiunkoku Monogatari series, and Shonen Onmyouji series. I heard that both of these series are going to be made into anime, too (they're from the same publisher as the ○マ novels). |

star wars shatterpoint is somewhat unique and more complex and a hell darker compared to other star wars novels. here the author shows a different aspect of war in which it is not just about separatists making moves and the republics making countermoves over and over until the republic win the "game". it touches very explicitly about how the war can cause psychological damages to a person or in case of jedi to their perception of the force to the point that they become somewhat psychotic. here you will find journals written by mace windu (or rather by the mace windu in the author's mind) talking about his personal thoughts and philosophies which are deep stuff. windu's relationship with the force here is also very interesting to read as it touches so many obscure things. as a comparison, when i was reading some parts of the novel i get the feeling similar to the feeling when i was watching two last evangelion episodes. to me personally, i found this to be a breakthrough in most star wars novels in that it is very dark and not so easy to discern. oh, and what is this mistake in the battle between obi-wan and anakin you were talking about? |

Not a novel, but I've been reading quite a few of the HP Lovecraft novellas and short stories.
Very intense, very enthralling, very disturbing. I really... I won't say "enjoyed" but "At The Mountains Of Madness" definately left an impression on me, as has "The Case Of Charles Dexter Ward" and "The Haunter In The Dark." As for proper novels... Well, I read a pretty good novel named "Idoru" recently. And the Testament of St. John last night. I'm waiting expectantly for the Kamikaze Girls/Shimotsuma Monogatari novel to be released. |

I just finished Charles Dickens' Bleak House. It was actually pretty good although incredibly long. Some 800 pages or so. Right now, I starting on Lady Audley's Secret by Mary Elizabeth Braddon. To my surprise, this one is pretty good too (although I'm only a few chapters in).

hm.. i 'm not really into the "after the empire ends" storyline. i found the lack of jedi fighters or force users to be rather dull and less exciting. seems like my fascination by the idea of the force is the one that draws me into star wars franchise.
however i found the "new jedi order" series to be very enjoyable to read. the story is about some new race that can access the force and manipulate it differently than the jedi do. this type of story is actually what i enjoy instead of the battle of wits type of thing that a lot of star wars novels revolve upon. i am not saying that it's bad but i just find it less appealing. |
