I think Beck gets the closest. Many romance titles come close but they feel nostalgic at times and they occasionsaly ignore the bad things about life and focus exclusively on the romance.
Beck (while it isn't really about an average school life) shows the teenage lifestyle in an amazingly realistic light. It shows the boredom a lot of us go through (which is just starting to pass for me) and shows (this is REALLY RARE for a manga) how music affects a teenagers life.
I can relate to the main character because I'm in a band that just got started myself. Though when the drummer (me) is the only instrumentalist in the group who has been playing for more than a few months (6 years now...) our quality really shows.

I think you might need to be more specific on what you mean by the avg. teenage life in anime.
Do you mean anime that portrays adolescents accurately during their average day?

Well, my guess is that title would go to Azumanga Daioh, and to go up just a couple years to college, Genshiken does an OK job, although its not so much focused on the work aspect of college...

Now that I'm rereaden' his post it sounds like he wants something that differs from the average teenage life. Most teenagers are not in gangs. Alot of American media covers the urban life you want to watch.

Honestly, that's not real life for the majority of youngsters. That's an illusion created by rap music and Grand Theft Auto. (Man, between this and the femme fatale thread, I'm going to get my arse flammed off today. :D ) And as far as Japan goes, I can't answer.
Gangs are a lot rarer than stereotypes prevail. Sex is sex and obviously can't be displayed very thoroughly in comics that aren't entirely pornographic. As for drugs, the teens that I've known in the last few years spend far more time getting smashed than getting high. Just kick the habit and read something else instead. ;)

Depends on where you live. When I was in highschool in Maryland for 2 years there were plenty of sex and drugs. I wouldn't say gangs I only knew one gang and I could barely call them a gang except for the fact they hung around together alot. When I was in highschool in New Jersey for my last 2 years there were barely any drugs(mostly drinking but even that wasn't as big as when I was in Maryland), 0 gangs, and well sex you can find anywhere and everywhere. But I don't see many anime portraying sex, drugs, and gangs. Actually, Akira is probably the only one dealing with teenagers I can think of that really portrays all items.

You could always consider Boys Be. It's like Azumanga Daioh, but for guys. [Note: Fairly rough comparison]

Sex in Akira? Just some rough groping IIRC, and the drugs that played the most important role weren't recreational drugs. The gang part was there, but the sex and drugs were mainly implied as opposed to actually being onscreen or playing a major role in the plot development. Any teenager who's life was like Akira doesn't fit any definition of "average" in my book.

As far as the teenagers who live like Akira being "average"...I never sayed it was. I was only stating that Akira is the only anime that I can think of the portrays all those items together. While there wasn't actualy sex no but there was big concept of it happening around them(so you got me there).
The drugs were actually in there IIRC and weren't implied. Because I do remember Tetsuyo saying want to pop one. And If I remember correctly there was guy in the background that placed drugs into his drink.

Drugs were in the movie, but the main gang wasn't shown using them or drinking any alcohol and they used derogatory terms for both the drugs and the people who used them. So, if anything, they seemed anti-drug to me. Maybe that still counts as a drug move though? I don't know, it's just my view.

Wow...quite the dilemma this thread places me in. On the one hand, it has an absolutely awful opening post that, under normal circumstances, would result in the thread being locked. IT DOESN'T EVEN HAVE SENTENCES!
On the other hand, a lot of you ignored the fact that it was pointless spam and went right on ahead posting.
Thanks. Now I don't know if I should let it go or shut it down on principle.
Regardless, goribigon, next time you start a thread, actually try doing so by posting an intelligent topic in a presentable manner. Complete sentences with thought behind them and not some mindless dribble of words.

Just let it go. You must down a whole roll of Tums every day at this rate. Sometimes a dumb question can still result in an interesting answer or maybe just amusing dialog. Trying to police an entire set of forums to this level is just a bit much. Lay off the micromanaging and let the forum take care of itself sometimes. Better for us and better for you. There's really no need to try and run a perfect forum.
I'm not trying to be a jerk, but I've posted on dozens of forums that get anywhere from ten to ten thousand posts every day and none of them seem nearly as uptight as this forum is. A forum is mainly about the simple joy of comparing views and theories. It's not meant to be a perfectly clean reference tomb.
Well, at least that's my view.

I'd say close it down, because otherwise you'll just see more posts like the one from Daxomni.

And it also encourages more dumb questions. Intelligent questions, on the other hand, will still result in interesting answers and amusing dialogue without the unfortunate side-effect of the collective IQ melting through the cracks in the floor. Besides, this wasn't even really a question. Just a jumble of words and grunts and half-hearted gestures hinting at a rough concept of "topic."
Hm...I think Iemander has a point. I probably ruined the discussion anyway with the last post. But still, people, when you see an obviously crappy post like the one that started this thread, ignore it. Giving it an honest response is about as taxing on my job as backseat moderating because it achieves the same result; more crap stemming from the original offender—sometimes actually worth reading, but making no sense unless I let the original spam post stay—that'll all likely have to be deleted anyway.
Locking. If any other administrators or moderators believe this is in the wrong, feel free to unlock it.
