I was seriously disappointed with this show at first. Girls who trip all the time, die or have somewhat random problems just don't appeal to me. However, with the introduction of the summer arc, things got better, and the end nearly had me in tears.
Still, the first 8 episodes or so are not really my cup of tea. |

One of the shows that were my entry into the anime realm, Cowboy Bebop has a special place. While I saw the stellar German dub, and not the stellar English dub first, it was a great, episodic show (And at that timeslot, I could only watch it if my parents weren't there), I immediately liked the characters and the music. Full appreciation after I bought the box set and watched the whole thing - again :D |

There are crazy shows done right, and crazy shows done wrong. While Dead Leaves is a perfect example for wrong, FLCL sure is a right. The storyline, while being hard to follow, is not entirely convoluted or not needed. FLCL has some great characters and the animation is superb. What makes FLCL really stand out, though, is the music. When the song "Little Busters" is played, I had goosebumps the first time I heard it. I couldn't get the music out of my head even a week after seeing FLCL. Pure awesomeness right here. |

When I saw the first bunch of episodes, I was sure I would rate Gankutsuou 10/10. There was suspense, great music, great characters, and the show is worth watching for the visuals alone.
The problem is that, compared with the book, the second half falls apart. So many changes would not have been necessary, and the lack of background (which is clumsily inertwined in the second half) reduces the impact a lot - not to mention the historical background which was great for me as a history-buff.
Just like in Children Of Men, the carnage in the last few episodes was absolutely unnecessary and did not add anything to story, suspense or impact. For me, it felt totally out of place. Of course, an ending like that is probably needed because the show was changed so much that Dumas' ending was impossible. Towards the end, the show stumbles into a lot of tropes and completely removes any kind of message Dumas' novel had, replacing it with cliché and carnage.
I give this show 8/10 as an adaptation, but 9/10 because of the awesome first half and the stunning visuals. |

This series has so many motives, it has so many genres in itself, it has a wonderful soundscape and some great characters, and all of them have good, believable character development.
While it would seem the series would focus on different motives, it all fleshs the characters out, leading to the final few episodes which conclude everything in a great way. I adore how bravely, how genuinely the story was told here, and I like all of the characters. They might be some of the most "normal" characters in a non-normal setting I have encountered so far.

There are two episodes that strike my mind when thinking about this series. The first one is episode 5 or something, where he drinks out of the bottle with the ball in it. This episode has a slice-of-life feeling, and is absolutely great. The other one would be episode 18, which was stunning in execution and really, really heartwrenching.
The rest of the series was what I didn't like, I especially found Kaminas development too unconvincing and the ending felt out-of-place, since some things just weren't explained at all.
However, I can't say this show ripped off Evangelion, because that simply isn't true. I would recommend this to everyone who liked mecha shows, but it just wasn't for me. |

I am wondering the whole time whether I should rate this 9 or 10/10. While most other things I would rate 10/10 are relatively easy to follow, have a great storyline and great everything, I am not sure Utena can keep up with that. The storyline might be impossible to fully understand for someone who hasn't seen the series (Like me), but I guess I got the basics. So, why does it (probably) deserve a rating as high as 10?
It's the art. Utena might be the anime that comes closest to a really beautiful piece of art. Everything, from cushions and blanket, to the character designs is simply enormously beautiful. The best thing about this whole movie, however, is the dancing scene. I think it's safe to say that it is one of my favorite scenes in anime ever. It's so powerful, so beautiful, I can't express it in words. There you have it. A Masterpiece, exquisite beyond words. |

This made me cry. I will never again see mobile phones or travelling to space the same way.
Shinkai creates some dense characters and strong emotions in just 30 minutes, and that is astounding itself. That he did everything on his own makes it even better.
I won't say Shinkai is the next Miyazaki, because I think every artist should be seen on his own, but he sure has talent to create beauty and emotions. |
