Afro Samurai: Resurrection (movie) Good A lil' hip, but not happenin'.
After War Gundam X (TV) Good Combines my favorite franchise (Gundam) with my favorite story setting (post-apocalyptic). Considering those two elements, this should have been way better. Still, Garrod is a character that grows on you.
Akira (movie) Good An unfortunate victim of its own reputation. Not a bad movie by any means, but one that I'm not aching to re-watch.
(The) Animatrix (OAV) Bad
Appleseed (OAV) Good Not sure why this one gets such a bad rap. It isn't an exquisite piece of art or anything, but it isn't offensively bad either.
Batman: Gotham Knight (movie) Good Here's hoping the Batman + anime partnership is a long lasting one. There is a lot of source material available that I would like to see done in this style.
BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad (TV) Masterpiece
Berserk (TV 1997) Masterpiece My favorite anime of all-time. The story of Guts' struggle has been influential to me, beyond measure.
(The) Big O (TV) Weak Big O, go! No, I mean 'go' as in 'leave'! Wouldn't have been as bad if a certain US channel didn't shove this down our throats.
Black Lagoon (TV) Excellent Waiting till I see Second Barrage to review this.
Bleach the Movie: Memories of Nobody Weak Oh, Senna. Let me write about the ways that I hate you. No, better yet, let me spare you all from reading that. Back to the movie... Overblown with too many random generic characters. Never even attempts to make sense. Great fight scenes. Were we expecting anything else?
Bleach: The DiamondDust Rebellion (movie 2) So-so Much more enjoyable than the first Bleach movie, but I'm not saying to give it a ringing endorsement. I like that it centered around already-existing characters in the Bleach continuity, instead of making up random useless characters like the first movie.
Blood: The Last Vampire (movie) Bad Sorry Blood fans, but I just do not like Saya. At all. She can keep her big lipped attitude to herself!
Blue Exorcist (TV) Very good
Broken Blade (movie series) Masterpiece
Casshern Sins (TV) Excellent
Chrono Crusade (TV) Decent
Cobra The Animation: The Psychogun (OAV) Decent Anyone who has seen Cobra will tell you he is a mix of James Bond and Han Solo. An accurate description, in my estimation.
Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion (TV) So-so You talk about your overrated animes, and I'll talk about Code Geass. Too many times, the plot writes itself into a corner, and never figures a way out. They did a great job in detailing the strategies used in battle -- if this series had more of that, I could bump the rating up a few notches.
Cowboy Bebop (TV) Masterpiece Arguably the most influential anime series of all-time. Some series tried to emulate the formula, but as anyone who has seen this show knows -- there will never be another Cowboy Bebop.
Cowboy Bebop: The Movie Excellent Sometimes, a great series doesn't equal a great movie. In this case though, it does. It's a shame they didn't do more movies like these. I still think they could make more, while keeping continuity intact.
Dead Leaves (OAV) Very good Can I call this anime craze-tastic? Because that's what it is.
Deadman Wonderland (TV) Not really good
Death Note (TV) Excellent One of the most ambitious projects out there. Set a high standard for itself; turned out to be every bit as good as it aspired to be. Not often do you see anime that lives up to the hype quite like Death Note does.
Demon City Shinjuku (OAV) Decent It shames me to say that I don't remember much about this anime. It's been at least a decade since I've seen it. Perhaps a re-watch is in order?
Descendants of Darkness (TV) Not really good My first experience in this genre. I only watched it because it aired on US TV, which I found quite shocking that they would air something like this. I must say I wasn't offended by the content, although I did not enjoy it. The humor though, oh man, talk about a show's saving grace. The comedy in this series saved it from being a complete waste.
Dogs: Bullets & Carnage (OAV) Good This short feature contains some of the better background music out there. The strongest point for this anime isn't that the stories interlock, it's the individual stories themselves. In particular, the 2nd and 4th parts were the best. The only problem here is that it's over too soon.
Dragon Ball (TV) Good The beginning of the most popular anime franchise in history. What more need be said?
Dragon Ball Z (TV) Masterpiece Denying the awesomeness of this series is lying to yourself. How many of us wouldn't be here if it weren't for this series?
Dragon Ball Z: Bardock - The Father of Goku (special) Very good Do yourself a favor and watch a clip of the French dub. "Friez-ehhhhhh!"
Dragon Ball Z: Bojack Unbound (movie 9) Good Your typical Goku movie, only with Gohan instead. I love tournaments though, so this movie earns some points with me. Also the interaction between Goku and Gohan ups this movie a notch. "It's the only way..."
Dragon Ball Z: Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan (movie 8) Excellent I knowingly overrate this movie because of my partiality towards Broly as a character. You could say he was the only 'natural' super saiyan of the series, since he was the one the legends described.
Dragon Ball Z: Cooler's Revenge (movie 5) Decent A decent movie, but as with many DBZ films, it feels like going through the motions. I will say that the character design for Cooler's final form is all sorts of badass.
Dragon Ball Z: Dead Zone (movie 1) So-so Garlic Jr. isn't any more interesting here than he is in the TV series. Not a terrible movie, despite the continuity errors.
Dragon Ball Z: Fusion Reborn (movie 12) Excellent Another rare case of an American soundtrack adding to my enjoyment of an anime. Goku's SSJ3 transformation is my favorite of the series. The end fight against Janemba shatters the senses. The scene with Vegeta describing the afterlife before returning to vapor is haunting.
Dragon Ball Z: Lord Slug (movie 4) So-so I just don't like fights revolving around giant-sized characters. This is a rarity for anime though, where I felt the American soundtrack upped this movie a notch.
Dragon Ball Z: Super Android 13! (movie 7) Decent The DBZ movie formula is in full rinse-wash-repeat mode here. Everybody gets their fight scenes. Goku beats up the bad guy. You've seen this movie before.
Dragon Ball Z: The History of Trunks (special) Very good Surprisingly grim. Set the tone for one of the most popular characters of the main series.
Dragon Ball Z: The Return of Cooler (movie 6) Decent A lackluster and very anti-climactic finale, but the fight scenes with the Z-warriors were well done.
Dragon Ball Z: The Tree of Might (movie 3) Good I might be a little partial to this movie, as it was the first DBZ full-length feature I saw. I enjoyed the serious atmosphere of the fight at the end.
Dragon Ball Z: The World's Strongest (movie 2) Decent A movie with some severely underrated fight scenes. The choreography was top notch. DBZ was at its best when it focused on hand-to-hand martial arts, in my opinion.
Dragon Ball Z: Wrath of the Dragon (movie 13) Not really good Another copy-and-paste effort from the DBZ movie team. Like Movie 4, this features giant monster fighting, so my interest level never really responded to this film.
Dragon Ball: Yo! The Return of Son Goku and Friends!! (ONA) Decent This was everything it needed to be. It was so refreshing to see all our old cast favorites back on the screen again in an all-new original story after so many years. Was it good? Not very. Was it dumb? Oh, plenty. Did I enjoy it? You bet I did.
Durarara!! (TV) Excellent One of the most innovative series I've seen. Durarara portrays the modern landscape as well as any show out there, not counting just anime. Every aspect of this show was crafted with high quality, from the art to the soundtrack. Durarara also captures the urban setting, one of my favorite setting types, with near flawless execution. There are a lot of rewards for watching this show. Humor, drama, suspense..., whatever you're looking for, you'll likely find it here.
Ergo Proxy (TV) Decent
Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone (movie) Good
Fist of the North Star (movie) Good So ridiculous. So over-the-top. So awesome.
FLCL (OAV) Weak For all the high praise this series gets, all it boils down to is a 'coming-of-age teen romance' story? Give me a break!
Full Metal Panic! (TV) Very good
Fullmetal Alchemist (TV) Good One of the most fun series of all-time. Unfortunately, I'm dragging the rating down quite a bit because of how the continuity is shattered about halfway through the show. I can appreciate this series on its own, but the existence of Brotherhood really skews my view on original FMA.
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (TV) Excellent
Fullmetal Alchemist: The Movie - Conqueror of Shamballa Good Overall, an enjoyable movie that wraps up the psuedo-continuity created by the original FMA. The one complaint I have is that while the Elrics loose ends are tied up very nicely, the rest of the cast is left up in the air. I know the viewer is supposed to make those conjectures, but its obvious how much story material had to be cut for this film. One last thing -- Fritz Lang is supposed to be King Fucking Bradley? Really???
Ghost in the Shell (movie) Good Like Akira, this movie suffers from a bloated reputation. Even so, the tone and atmosphere more than make up for it. Many series would later try to capture the neo-tech feel, with mixed results.
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (TV) Very good Delivers everything you would expect out of a series about futuristic invisible technocops. The dialog often wanders into term-heavy technobabble, which brings the rating down a bit.
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2nd GIG (TV) Very good Delivers more of the same from the 1st Ghost in the Shell series. I was hoping for more of a covert ops feel, but like the first series, we only get traces of it, mixed in with silly kid-voiced robots. I try not to let something like that damage my interpretation of the show, but it really does kill the atmosphere at times. Also, I prefer gunfights to contrived CGI nethack scenes. Still a decent show, but could be so much more.
Gintama: The Movie Very good
(The) Girl Who Leapt Through Time (movie) Decent A very interesting concept in this movie, one I was hoping would be explored by fiction. The concept is well played, but most of the thematic elements don't really match my taste. Time travel is neat. School-aged girls, not so much. Drags for what seems like forever in the beginning, picks up immensely with a twist, then settles back down into average range.
Gurren Lagann (TV) Not really good Another series that embodies the 21st century state-of-mind. I don't have many nice things to say about Gurren Lagann, so I'll just focus on the positives. The art and animation are appealing. The action scenes have an exciting pace, even if they're non-sensical. Though I'm not a fan of the 'vibe' of the show, I can say the creative team achieved the feel they were going for. Simon and Rossieu are the standouts among the cast.
Hellsing (TV) Excellent Blood soaked vampire action. The end strays from the manga, but the series as a whole is more than worth your time. Hurry. Hurry! HURRY!
INTERSTELLA 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem (movie) Not really good This is one rating where I really don't like ANN's worded rating system. I wouldn't call this movie "Not Really Good", because it seems to be good actually. Problem is that the "movie" doesn't fit my taste. So, while I can't give it a high rating, I wouldn't go as far to call it bad or anything.
Inuyasha (TV) Excellent
InuYasha the Movie 2: The Castle Beyond the Looking Glass Very good This feature contains some important scenes in the Inuyasha lore. The storytelling also features a unique approach, with the poetry inserts scattered throughout the movie. Poetry may be lost on me, but I appreciated the originality.
InuYasha the Movie: Affections Touching Across Time Excellent Some surprisingly slick swordfighting scenes. Surely satisfying. Sensational story. Okay, maybe I stretched it a bit with that last one.
InuYasha: The Tragic Love Song of Destiny (special) Very good I saw this without knowing what it was, a potential blunder on my part! This is just a part of the regular Inuyasha TV series, so rate accordingly. Note though, that these are some particularly strong episodes.
Jikū Bōken Nūmamonjaa (OAV) Awful
Jyu-Oh-Sei (TV) So-so A good series, until you get to the curveball "WTF" ending. That's all I'll say!
Karas (OAV) Weak Karas is another one of those projects that puts big budget into graphics, but has a plot with an incoherent storyline that jumps from point to point. That seems to be the blueprint in Hollywood these days, and it doesn't work any better in anime.
Kekkaishi (TV) So-so
Kill Bill Chapter 3: The Origin of O-Ren (movie segment) Awful Why do they even list this on here? Tasteless and senseless violence, and people call it 'art'?
Mobile Fighter G Gundam (TV) Very good This has to be one of the most polarizing 'love it or hate it' animes of all-time. Fortunately for me, I was in the 'love it' category. I mean, what's not to love about Domon? "This hand of mine...".
Mobile Suit Gundam (TV) Masterpiece This series stands as the most rewarding learning experience of any anime I've ever watched. I've studied psychology for years, but never have I learned more than from watching Amuro Ray grow up. "I can see time itself".
Mobile Suit Gundam - The Movie Trilogy Excellent A more streamlined version of the TV series. I feel some of the original charm is lost in the condensed version, and White Base seems to bounce from battle to battle with little explanation. Still, you can't go wrong with Gundam. The animation in the 3rd movie in particular warrants watching.
Mobile Suit Gundam 00 (TV) Decent I immediately got behind 00 as soon as I heard it was announced. I thought it had potential to be as good as Wing. Oh, those were hopeful times. Really, the series is not bad by any means, but it didn't deliver in the way I had hoped. The reason? The writing. I enjoyed the story and plot, but both suffered because the episodes were written so poorly. It's not that I don't like the show, it's that I wish I liked it so much more.
Mobile Suit Gundam 00 Second Season (TV) Good The sequel season for 00 instantly appeals to me, as the characters are more mature than the first season. There are similar problems though, as the writing is all over the place, and episodes are structured poorly. Despite and above all that, this is a Gundam series, and there are lots of great space battles. I'm a sucker for that sort of thing, so I can easily look past the flaws. That's what fanboys do!
Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket (OAV) Decent One of the most intense opening sequences I've ever seen in anime. Unfortunately, it all went downhill from there. I just don't dig stories involving kids too much.
Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory (OAV) Excellent Very underrated series, chockfull of intense fights. Anavel Gato #1!
Mobile Suit Gundam F91 (movie) Excellent If you don't hold the fact that this movie was intended to be a 50-episode series against it, you will get a lot more enjoyment out of it. Ignore the woeful editing, and you have a powerful story on your hands.
Mobile Suit Gundam Wing (TV) Masterpiece One of the best combinations of drama/story and action/fighting. Most of the haters of this series simply couldn't digest or comprehend the philisophical dialog. What a shame. Their loss! Ignore their irrational idiocy and watch Gundam Wing, one of the finest Gundam series has to offer.
Mobile Suit Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz (OAV) Very good Comes close to being an excuse for Bandai to put out more models, but more Gundam is never a bad thing. Worth watching to see how Treize's influence is still felt, and for Wufei laying the mecha smackdown.
Mobile Suit Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz Special Edition (movie) Very good
Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ (TV) Very good
Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack (movie) Very good A great movie, with a great send-off for two of anime's most beloved characters. But, I have a huge problem with how 'out of character' Char was portrayed as.
Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team (OAV) Decent This series takes an ultra-realistic approach, which should appeal to me right away. Unfortunately, despite the realism, I feel this series retains a lot of the more silly aspects of anime (including one annoying-ass joke character). That would normally be okay, its just that they specifically went for a serious approach, so the humor isn't as effective in this setting. I liked this show, but felt it could have been so much more.
Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam (TV) Masterpiece If one considers Mobile Suit Gundam to be the high school class on Newtypes, then Zeta Gundam is the college course. What a fantastic series. The mature themes. The psychological drama. The three-party space battles. Beautiful. Zeta Gundam is easily my favorite Gundam series of all-time.
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (movie) Very good My expectations were a little too high for this movie. Still, everyone who worked on this movie did an awesome job. The directing is awesome, the voice acting is awesome, the soundtrack is awesome, etc.
Negadon: The Monster from Mars (movie) Worst ever They go all out with CG graphics, and focus them on an old scientist dude with glasses, of all things? And he's the main character? Yeah. That's about the most boring premise I've ever heard for a show.
Night Raid 1931 (TV) Excellent
Ninja Resurrection (OAV) Worst ever How many US customers got suckered into buying this?
Ninja Scroll (movie) Masterpiece Ninjas. Sword fights. Yep, this movie has it all. Time has proven that it can be difficult to make a good 'ninja anime'. This movie makes it look easy.
Paranoia Agent (TV) Weak Has enough 'psychological thriller' moments to keep you immersed, but bookends the tension with some monotonous droning dialog. Kind of like my reviews! Really though, I will say the ending was well done and redeemed the time I spent watching this show. That said, I didn't like it and I don't think I would recommend it.
Princess Mononoke (movie) Very good Follows the Miyazaki tradition of being an awesome movie that somehow just slightly falls short of my expectations. Don't let that stop you though, it is definitely worthy of a viewing or two.
Psychic Wars (OAV) Awful Great to watch, if you're in the mood for laughs!
Reborn! (TV) Weak
Requiem from the Darkness (TV) Worst ever Offensive. Senseless. Irredeemable. The one thing nice I can say about this series, is the originality of the art style. Not that I was fond of the art style, but I did appreciate their effort. Did I say this series was offensive? My favorite story of all-time is Berserk, just so you know that me being offended is actually quite an achievement. This show is a grave insult to me, and so I only feel obligated to return the favor -- t'hell with ya Requiem!
Rurouni Kenshin: The Motion Picture Very good Feels more like the 1st season of the RK TV series than the epic Trust & Betrayal OVA. Not necessarily a bad thing, as the 1st season of RuroKen is rather good.
Rurouni Kenshin: Trust & Betrayal (OAV) Masterpiece One of the most artful works I have ever seen. Top class production, in every way imaginable.
Samurai 7 (TV) Decent
(The) Secret World of Arrietty (movie) Excellent
(The) Slayers (TV) Good Just from reading the title, I thought this series was going to be grim as hell. So, imagine my surprise when I learned about its light-hearted comedic nature. The show can be a little juvenile at times, but the humor is well placed, and is just plain fun to watch. Let me also credit the show for being very detailed and true to RPGs. There would be times where the group had to stop and discuss what spell they were going to use next. Stuff like that I think is very awesome.
Soul Eater (TV) Excellent
Spirited Away (movie) Excellent Wow, what a wonderful movie. Sweeping and immersive visuals, accompanied by a lush and inviting soundtrack. Pushes the imagination to limits unseen. So many themes, so many symbolic statements on society. The only thing keeping this from being an unquestionable masterpiece for me, is the incredibly slow start this movie takes. But trust me, be patient, and you will be thankful.
Spriggan (movie) Decent Spriggan is your typical anime movie that's all action and no plot. The movie seldom attempts to explain itself, and when it does, it doesn't make sense. Unless you can make sense out of a 12 year old kid with zombie skin who wants to ...control weather so he can revive dinosaurs??? Yeah, they went there. Despite all that, the movie still is quite enjoyable due to the amazing animation and awesome action.
Star Blazers (TV) Not really good This isn't a fair criticism of the show, but I'm biased against American-ized adaptations. It wouldn't have been so bad if they had just left character names alone.
Strait Jacket (OAV) Decent The gimmick gets played out a little bit too soon, and the ending sequence is unnecessarily grim. I can't ignore the quality of the animation though. Some really slick artwork here.
Street Fighter Alpha (OAV) Not really good I found a 'few' more reasons to like this more than the sequel. Unforunately, I found a 'lot' more reasons to dislike it.
Street Fighter Alpha: Generations (OAV) So-so Just another nonsensical continuity-destroying anime adaptation of a fighting game. The animation isn't so bad, but the character drawings are out of whack.
Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie Good Most people watched this for one scene. Okay, maybe two scenes.
Sword for Truth (OAV) Bad Even all the gratuitous nudity and bloodshed can't save this one.
Sword of the Stranger (movie) Excellent This film is very damn close to being considered a modern day classic. It contains just about every element that appeals to me. The one and only thing that keeps me from giving this the full 10 is a couple of hambone cheesy scenes, but given the scope of this film, they're quickly forgiven. In all, this is one movie I would not hesitate to recommend. Watching it was an enjoyable experience, and it delivered on every expectation I had.
Tokko (TV) Bad This is an unfair rating, as I saw a heavily censored version of this show. I don't think I would have liked the show anyway, but the language seemed very colorful, so maybe an uncensored version would get me to bump this rating a little bit.
Tokyo Godfathers (movie) Good
Trigun (TV) Excellent Anyone who knows Vash The Stampede is a better person because of it. Trigun is known for having some surprisingly deep philosophical themes, despite all the comedy you see on the surface.
Trigun: Badlands Rumble (movie) Very good
Turn A Gundam (TV) Very good Loran Cehack is one of the most likeable and enduring characters I've seen in anime. The initial pace is painstakingly long at first, but once you get near the end, you'll be rewarded. Much has been said about Syd Mead's mecha designs for this anime. I'm not a fan of them myself, but I don't needlessly hate on them. Accept them for what they are, and you can enjoy this series for what it was meant to be.
Vampire Hunter D (OAV) Masterpiece The first real anime I ever saw. I will forever be in debt to this movie!
Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust (movie) Very good I liked this movie better the second time I watched it. Wonderful art, with D doing what D does.
(The) Vision of Escaflowne (TV) Very good
Voltron (U.S. TV) Good Whether you call it Go Lion or Voltron, I'm cool with it.
X (movie) Bad What happened? Just .... what happened? This is not X.
X (TV) Very good This is just what you would expect from a Clamp effort -- full of crazy character designs, and plenty of "holy crap?!?" moments.
