I admit I know nothing about Godzilla's... er, rivals other than Mothra & MechaGodzilla. Anyone well-versed in kaiju universe here kind enough to enlighten me... who (or what) that winged fella is? Thanks Smile

The monster shown is a kaiju known as "Hokmuto" or "Muto" for short. It is an entirely new monster made for the film from what I understand.

Btw, me after the trailer:

Setsura: I thought that was Rodan.

Wow, that was one heck of a trailer, it certainly achieved one simple goal: Get most viewers HYPED.

Ugh. I wanted to stop watching all these new trailers and stuff to keep myself surprised when I actually got to see it on screen. But I couldn't help myself when the article mentioned another kaiju...

Needless to say, I'm pretty excited, now.

Tony K.: It's the only trailer which has got me motivated to see the film so far. I was getting bored with the endless talking people.

If they could take the money that goes into making these bad ass special effects, and use them for the new Attack on Titan live-action, that'd be great.

I thought it was Rodan when I first saw it a while back but from what I understand they aren't using any of the opponents Godzilla has faced in the past, probably some copyrights issue or something along those lines.

Looks great though... I need to quit watching these trailer so I can go into the movie with lowered expectations.

Best part of all: They still haven't had a single character, say played by Hank Azaria or Matthew Broderick, on the trailer come out and say "This is going to be big."

But yeah, as said previously, all new monsters but the flyers scale remind me of the middle Gaos from Gamera, Guardian of the Galaxy. Sure, classic monsters would be better but as they're all copyrighted, it's cheaper just to stick with licensing the big one and slapping a new name on a giant animal form for the others.

Ronin: Toho is basically the go-to company for this deal, and they're overseeing the film, so it doesn't end like the one everyone hates. So unless some other studio has the remake rights to the other Toho kaiju, I wouldn't know why they wouldn't be approved.

Looked like Rodan to me. Cool
(Actually, it did look like Gaos, but not sure whether Toho's allowed to use all of Daiei's Gamera icons.)

But then, this was being shown to a country that knew the difference.
Over here, they're still selling the Legendary Pictures doom-and-gloom subplot of Mr. Stressed-Out who lost his wife in the reactor....Obviously coming from a studio that thought 2012 was a hit.

Completely new one called "MUTO".

Since it costs money to get the other monsters.

Eric: I'm sure they're not allowed to use any Daiei characters. [Yet.] I remember the Tokyo S.O.S. director explicitly stating the monster washed ashore in that film was not Gamera. Laughing But hey, one day we'll get that crossover...
