The message is date July 2003, but we only had it pointed out to us now, and most other websites such as 2ch and Natsume Maya are also just covering it now.
Also, some sites state that the show was originally expected this year, but we can't find anything to back that up, so consider that rumour..

well, the original source of the rumor is 2ch, where the first thread about the new yamato mentioned a "2004 launch". as far as i can see, they linked to the same article we're linking to now (except at a different, now defunct url), and this article says a 2006 release.
so... yeah, probably not even a "rumor", so much as "someone who can't read numbers."

No, there is a 2004 project, Matsumoto's Great Yamato, which is currently expected to start in the fall. They're selling preview DVDs through their website as well (Japanese mailing addresses only, doh!)
This "Rebirth" project was originally a movie started back in 94-95, he had it 60% or so complete when Nishizaki went bankrupt and went to jail on drug and gun charges
The general concensus is while Nishizaki came up with the original baseline concept, the end-product is pure Matsumoto, and juding by the quality of Nishizaki's non-Yamato work, "Great" will probably turn out to be far superior.

Wow, Nishizaki is a real OG. So I take it Matsumoto is not on this project anymore.

Matsumoto hasn't done Yamato with Nishizaki since "Arrevederci" 20 years ago
Matsumoto's project is "Great Yamato"

Let us hope the Great Yamato is produced. I'm hoping. The best anime classic...Yamato. I and many fans are hoping!
