Everything makes sense now.
1. Create controversy to garner attention
2. Frankenstein's monster created
3. Word spreads
4. Announce an unedited version
5. ???
6. PROFIT!!
Touche, FUNimation, brilliant marketing!

I was wondering how long before they said they would at least consider releasing unedited discs. It makes more sense since people are bound to be more receptive to the idea that they can buy the unedited version if they're really that concerned. Plus, it always means that the discs have something that you can't see for free.
Personally, I don't much care either way since what it sounds like has been edited doesn't appeal to me and the opinions of the show as a whole aren't too favorable. I just hate to see Funimations sales dip because people get upset. Even more so if edits for this make someone stop buying shows from them when Funi traditionally doesn't edit shows.

Vampire Bund doesn't really interest me that much but Funi's previous statement on editting even the dvd releases concerned me. It was obvious that they were reacting to the results of the Chris Handley case and were trying to save their asses, however this will only alienate their fanbase and drive people further into downloading the episodes. I understand their fears, but if they want to keep a shred of the respect and reputation they've garnered from their companies fans, they will stay away from editing the series in the slightest.

That's fair.
It seems understandable to edit the free broadcast.
But even if they have to put a 18+ sticker on the DVD, it seems they should be able to release it that way.
I imagine this decision came after long talks with their legal department.

At least they are considering it, which is good. After thinking about this some I've changed my stance a bit. I will check out the streams already to just see how it is, and then I will decided if I want to drop the money on it or not.

Oh my god. How stupid can you get? If they're able to release the DVD uncensored they should have just done that from the start. But no. Instead they jump to announce it will be censored and create a huge shit storm. Apparently they didn't see that coming since they're suddenly all "what? people are upset? okay we won't censor it". Except they've already pissed lots of people off and now they actually make their initial decision look worse. I mean, if they can so quickly respond and now claim they don't have to censor it...well obviously they didn't have to in the first place. That pretty much throws any justification that they had no choice out the window.
Oh and the worst part: They still haven't seen the whole series and can't commit for certain on this. So there's a chance that they'll change their minds again at which point you can count on seeing an even bigger fallout.
Unless of course this is all just one big douchey marketing scheme. If that's the case, I hope it backfires even more. That kind of thing is just a big manipulative screw you to your customers.

I certainly can not, for the life of me, find any reason why FUNimation was going to edit the series.
Damn, if only there were a clue.

Assuming Funi does release an unedited DVD version, it is definitely a pretty convincing victory for the vox populi.

There is probably materials lag here. It may be that they have the TV masters for the first 9 in the office but only the notes/video through 7 for DVD masters. Remember that Shaft frequently re-edits the video for DVD.

No it doesn't. If there were no justification, they wouldn't edit the online streaming at all. They're still not going to change that for reasons given in the statement.
