Shame, it would have been a much bigger number if they'd done a worldwide release

Yes, it is a shame that we will not be getting this in the US any time soon due to stupid legal reasons. I would have even shelled out the money on a blu ray copy too.

Oh ya....I totally forgot about F**KING HARMONY GOLD and their abomination called Robot**h (I consider it a dirty word). I was planning to wait for the US release, and reading the previous couple posts it just came to me that it's not coming state-side anytime soon.
Time to re-allocate budget for the Japanese Blu-Ray release (it's not even "R2" anymore...since US and Japan are now in the same region)

Any word as to whether the Blu-ray version will have English subs?
Also, it's fifty bucks, but how many episodes did they put on the Blu-ray?

The first blu-ray ($50 MSRP) has... 1 episode. (well, it includes both versions of the first episode)
The rest of the discs retail at $70 each and have 3 episodes on each of them.
Still want this to be worldwide release?

I wonder why Bandai Visual Japan doesn't include English subtitles in their Macross DVDs. It's not like they'll compete with international releases, thanks to the legal mess involving the franchise.

It's better than no release.
But all of that is moot to me if there is no English subs.

Not to give any anime companies any horrible ideas or anything, but I would probably consider paying $70 for three blu-ray episodes of Frontier before I'd consider paying $80 for the Gunbuster movie on dvd.

I hate how Japanese DVD releases only put one episode on insteaad of including a proper 4 or even 5... or hell at least 3. I'm sure they do this later on, but I'd wait until I can get a full boxset of all of them with a local release.
While we're on teh subject of giving anime companies ideas, if they are aware of legal rights preventing releases of Macross outside of Japan, then the smart thing to do would be to include proper localized English subtitles on their Japanese releases so they get get more sales from importers. Or I can just settle for the free fansubs... their choice.
And for more ideas on what anime companies can do, whetehr Japanese of American distributors, is to take further advantage of blu-ray by releasing entire old standard definition shows on 1 or 2 blu-ray discs. So we can house a whole series conveniently. I'm sure they're looking for excuses to resell old licensed shows that weren't made in HD and to which there'd be no advantage to digitally remaster into HD. And that'd be an awesome idea! I'm not saying they should sell the entire things for the price of one standard blu-ray release (Though that would be awesome) but at a decent price for an entire series. It would certainly save me space! Certainly something to think about once blu-ray is more mainstream.

But that first pressing has access to Macross All that VF on it. So, yes I would have wanted that first one.

they could easily fit the whole series on 1-2 blu-ray discs there is no reason for this at all.

Clearly 45,000 people are willing to pay this price in Japan, so you can't really blame them for selling it at that price/disc count if there is that sort of market. Even at that price it's on track to be the highest selling TV anime show in a long time.

They could probably fit the whole season on twice without losing much quality at all. Oh well, supply and demand is a wonderful thing.

This is just not true.
At 1080p, even using AVC compression, once you include lossless 5.1 audio, you could fit 6 hours on a double layered BD (50 GB) and maintain quality. So the max they could really do is 12 or so episodes per disc without losing quality (or 6 on a single layered one) BD's were designed to have approxmately the same capacity as DVDs in terms of length, except that they'd store HD video instead of SD.
However if you are talking about storing SD video on a blu-ray, then yes, you could fit the entire 26 episode season on 1 50 GB blu-ray.
