The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Genres: comedy, science fiction, slice of life, supernatural Themes: school Plot Summary: On the first day of high school a beautiful girl named Haruhi Suzumiya introduces herself as having "no interest in ordinary humans". She asks for any aliens, time travelers, sliders or espers to join her. Watching her weird behaviour is Kyon who sits in front of Haruhi and is the only person who talks to her. When Kyon comments about Haruhi's joining every club in school and then quitting he unwittingly gives Haruhi an idea to start her own after school club. Thereafter Kyon and several others find themselves dragged, literally, into the Save our world by Overloading it with fun Suzumiya Haruhi's Brigade (the S.O.S. Brigade for short). ---------------------------------- Anime Marathon Discussion (Nov. 6th, 2015 - Nov. 15th, 2015) starts here ---------------------------------- We start the new Spring season of anime with this really absurd comedy series animated by the gods of Kyoto Animation. Of course from the looks of the first episode, it doesn't rely on over exaggerated visuals like most comedy series does; heck, it's rather simplistic. This seems to rely mostly on witty dialouge and how it's executed. I guess a good comparison for this series would be Irresponsible Captain Tylor where it relies on normal atmosphere, witty dialouge, and simple actions to really get a laugh out of you. And I have to say, this is by far the most unique 1st episode I have ever seen. The whole episode is basically a cheap ass film production filmed on the spot with a use of a camcorder (let's see how many people can relate to that ). There's even a badly sung OP song, hideous BGM which seems to be played from a MIDI player, and really horrible special effects (I mean REALLY horrible). Of course this needs to be seen! I basically knew nothing about this show, but this shows a great amount of promise, and Haruhi Suzumiya looks like she's going to be a riot in the next couple episodes. EDIT (7/13/06): Thank you, frentymon for making this "guide". Who would of thought this thread would get massively huge?! EDIT (12/6/06): This list has been COMPLETELY updated! I just saw it, and it's bloody brilliant. It's been a long time since I laughed that hard. Reminds me a bit of Ed Wood.

Agree, I was grinning the whole way through. Excellent "fake" acting too, this and simoun will be on my top list this season.

Guess I have to pick up its novel as well.
Have you noticed the ED animation where SOS Dan dance with exceptional fluidity? Unlike Gozno, which often uses flamboyant 3-D animation to show its technical advances, KyoAni often demonstrates their excellence in lesser noticeable places, such as the spinning electric fan and blurred image in characters' eyes (both from AIR). This time, the SOS Dan dancing was done with 60 frames per second -- twice as many as the regular analog NTSC signal could carry (30 fps, or 29.97 to be exact). I wonder how it would look on a 2ms LCD monitor coupled with pure digital signal source. |

I was kind of confused by it for a bit. When I first saw it last night, I wasn't even sure I was watching the right anime. I had to double check the download to make sure it was the right thing. It was a pretty unique first episode. I also thought it was kind of funny that in the real credits they have in large bold English print, "Ultra Director: Haruhi Suzumiya". Since it was in the real credits, can it be added to the Encyclopedia?
Edit: Hmm, I think the stuff in English may have been written by the fansub group who did it. It was kind of hard to notice, I couldn't tell. Edit2: I found the original ending, and yes, some of the credits were changed to English in the fansub. But "Ultra Director: Haruhi Suzumiya" is still in the Japanese credits (in Japanese) so it wasn't something the fansubbers added in for fun, it was actually in the real credits too. Cool. It's almost like a Japanese version of Home Movies, it really is. Except less squiggly.
Pretty amusing. Is voice actress Aya Hirano (Haruhi) the daughter of Fumi Hirano (Lum on Urusei Yatsura)? |

No. Hirano is a rather common family name, and Fumi Hirano didn't get married until 1989 (plus Hirano was her maiden family name), while Aya Hirano was born in 1987. |

I was laughing through most of the first episode, I can't wait for the 2nd.
The filming did throw me at first, but it's definitely worth watching. I did like the dance sequences during the ED. |

at first it took me a sec to catch what was going on, but after that it was great. Pretty rediculous film and the ending dance is pretty random.

I took a small peek into this thread just for curiousity's sake. I skimmed through the posts and decided to give it a viewing. I basically agree with everyone else. The first episode was unique and really threw me for a loop. I forgot the cameraman's name and I particularly liked his pointing out of how ridiculous anime can be/is and his explination for the lack of a fanservice scene. After finishing it I went back to watch the opening because something was odd about it (couldn't put my finger on it) and then I realized that most of the credits were Haruhi Suzumiya. This episode definitley got some hard laughs out of me and I'm looking forward to seeing the actual series. Brilliant first episode.

This was hilarious, particularly if you've ever made a student film before. I hope the rest of the series can live up to this.
Also, the ED is addictive. |

It's so addictive that someone has even created this parody. |

Wow, that was odd. I watched the 1st ep a couple of days ago, & I found it to be hilarious. The obvious mistakes they made in that movie were fun to watch. I haven't laughed that hard since Yakitate!! Japan. I don't think that all the eps will be like that, but that was definitely one of the more interesting 1st ep of a series. I'll definitely be watching this one. |

The first episode was fantastic, but somehow I get the impression that the show isn't going to sustain that kind of feel.
Is anyone familiar with the manga at all? |
