I've been rather fond of the 3DCG ship animation on these from the start simply because they're animated with a proper sense of scale and mass. Like when a ship gets hit by artillery fire and gets knocked back for a moment before exploding, it feels like a big heavy thing reacting to a violent impact. Constrast them to something like more recent Macross entries, whose Valkyries are often guilty of zipping around like ships in a video game instead of big heavy fighter planes.

Nice to see the Yamato remakes get some love.
Part of my triumvirate of favorite anime space opera, the other 2 being Legend of the Galactic Heroes and Crest of the Stars-- the last I hope will one day get its own remake.
Anno seemingly has his hands in all the remakes of classic anime. He storyboarded the great OP to 2199.

Wait, "more fan service than the original?" Sure you're not forgetting about OG Analyzer sexually harassing Yuki on multiple occasions and revealing her panties? They didn't have that in 2199.

This is what I was about to say. In addition in the original 1974 TV series, in the episode the first time the Yamato warped, Yuki's clothes vanished momentarily. In addition the cheesecake shots in Yamato 2199 are quite tame and brief.

Nice Review aside from the fanservice critique because I think the fanservice in the original was actually more crazier. I get it a A+ and it’s my favorite reboot anime of all time. I like it more than even the original. One of the positive things I would say as well are the female characters. To me they’re the best part of the show. Don’t get me wrong I really like the male characters as well. My favorite character is Akira Yamamoto! I wish they did better with 2202 but I still love it. I would really love to see a Akira spin off series and have Melda in it as well.

Yes I agree. I wish the Yamato Reboot was more popular. It’s my favorite reboot show of all time (I even love it more than the original version). I also love the original Legend of the Galactic Heroes as well. I’m definitely looking forward to Anno’s Yamato but honestly, I would rather see a spin off sequel to 3199 with Akira Yamamoto as the main character with Melda Dietz as her partner. That’s just me.

That’s what I thought as well. I love it!

Yes and the female characters are WAY better in the reboot as well. To me they’re the best part of the show. Overall I think the reboot is better for the character development, writing, action, backstories etc etc etc.
My favorite 3 characters in the franchise are Akira Yamamoto (remake version), Kaoru Niimi and Melda Dietz

I think it was Noboru Ishiguro who said there were far more female crew members at the beginning of the series (who may of appeared in the background?) but somehow it got reduced down to Yuki Mori somewhere along the line. I too really like the new female crew additions as well. And they aren't just shoved into the plot to sell bishoujo figures, something I fear before watching 2199.

Exactly. Yuki in the original was the only female character that had all the attention.
I think if Yutaka Izubuchi would’ve directed 2202, it would’ve been just as good if not probably better than 2199. I still love 2202. 2205 (despite being short) to me is great. 3199 (so far) it’s the second best season I just really hope they don’t kill off Akira AT ALL. Akira Yamamoto(reboot version) to me is the best character in the franchise. I really want to see a spin off series of her as the main character. I like the chemistry that she had with Klaus Keyman in 2202 but I prefer her chemistry with Melda Dietz. I really like the red suit she’s been wearing since 2202. It makes her super cool and badass. The only thing I didn’t like what they did to Akira aside from giving her less screen time ever since 2202 and drag on with the love triangle between her, Yuki and Kodai, is that spoiler[ in episode 12 of 2202, Akira was beating up pretty badly by Touko Katsuragi and got thrown on to Klaus Keyman leaving her unconscious. They need to make her to do better in Hand to Hand combat even though she did pretty well with the mutiny in the middle of season 1.] That’s one of the reasons why I want Akira to have a spin off. Not to mention, I always do references with the female characters in Yamato.

Add me to the list of someone who would love to see Crest of the Stars reboot! There is a new manga which I think is doing a pretty good job. If they take the designs from that it would be awesome!

Oh yeah! I forgot! Crest of the stars was underrated! I would love to see a reboot of it as well. I hope it gets a proper adaptation. I also want to see Captain Harlock getting a reboot.

Also correct if I’m wrong but I think part of the reason why the original version had very few female characters were budget reasons which is also the reason why it was 26 episodes each instead of 52 which also scrapped Captain Harlock to be appeared in the original Yamato as well. Another reason why is that Leiji Matsumoto wants to gearing towards the male demographic. When it first aired in 1974, surprisingly the majority of the fanbase that send Leiji fan letters and fanarts were females at the time.
