And all forty million are shortly to be rendered obsolete by a hardware revision! How cruel the machinations of the video gaming industry.

Why not?
Those rumours about Scorpio and Neo are barely rumours anymore.

Nope .. just rumors. Until something official is announced it's just noise.

they'll still be able to play games, they just won't look as nice as the new ones.
but why should that matter, they would have looked the same on the regular ps4 regardless.

There's a mid-gen console refresh during every single console generation. It's nothing new. The only difference this time is the level of incessant whining the internet generates has grown exponentially.

Sure, if that helps you sleep at night, so be it.

Speculation, for sure, but I'll back his opinion.
It's unfortunate we still live in a generation where console sales matter, but the reality is Microsoft has Sony beat except in console sales. It has the most exclusive, the most licensed rights to distribute (ironic considering Sony is a distributor), and has more apps.
Once Windows 10 and UWP hit, all bets are off for Sony to remain relevant in an ever-changing landscape of how everyone plays games.
If the only thing Sony can brag about is sales, that's not a good thing.
Don't read this as an attack on Sony. Far from it, but Sony must do more for its users than constantly pound the sales drum. That's old.
Microsoft, and Wall Street analysis confirms, is well ahead of the digital curve and is doing everything they can to remove the word "console" from gaming.
It's a damn smart move. By pushing Windows 10 as a platform, no one is going to care at all where the game is played.
I own an XBox One and I'm not happy with it. The box is far too limiting on what Microsoft wants to do and it's a piss-poor design model to work with Windows 10.
This decision has prompted me to forgo all consoles and get back into PC gaming. For the first time in a long time, the line between consoles and PCs is now blurred forever.
Unless you own a PS4. But hey... 40 million! (now I jab at Sony )

What's unfortunate about this?

This is news to me I haven't really been hearing any doom and gloom about how Windows 10 and Microsoft's Universal Windows Platform is going to essentially level the playing field in Microsoft's favor (especially in light of MS financial struggles and problems over the last 3 years or so) probably do to how those two things seemingly only really matter where the PC is concerned.

And yet no one admonished Microsoft and Nintendo for banging the sales drum last gen in spite of both systems flaws. All the while the PS3 was engaged in a desperate struggle with those two systems.

Doesn't this only apply to the PC and not the Xbox One or any prospective future Microsoft consoles though?

Y'know, it's weird listening to gamers who still think of consoles as GAMES? As in, "And nothing else?" Seriously.
I would never have bought a PS3 except that in 2008, they were the only affordable Blu-ray players that worked, and in '10, I got a free 3D Blu-ray player without having to ask for one.
Now that they added Blu 3D, I was just on the verge of finally getting a PS4 (as soon as I finish my backlog of PS3 Network games), only...oh, what is it freakin' NOW?? Are they still bursting into flame again?

Congratulations to Sony for making the PlayStation4 the best-selling console brand worldwide. Their impressive gaming library really helped.

Yet I hear no sales announcement from Microsoft. And I refuse to update to Windows 10.

The rich just keep getting richer and it doesn't seem like that's going to stop for Sony any time soon well atleast not for the PlayStation I can't comment on Sony's other departments.

This is the PC community constantly. No matter when you build your PC, there is already a game coming out in 6 months pushing that shit to the limit. And yeah, you may be able to play 90% of what is out there, but you will still be pissed about the 10%. The reality of the situation is that consoles are the primary thing holding games back at the point they are at now.
Whereas computers have reached a point that there is really no need to upgrade until things start breaking in terms of productivity, there is always sacrifices being made in any title that is released. A game is nearly never as powerful as it could be because it has to cater to the bottom % of the market, and for many titles, that is console players.
Until we have a radical jump in gpus, this is pretty much what needs to happen at the halfway point for consoles for it to not drag the rest of the market down.
