I've just purchased battle royale the manga additions, under the circumstances of whats been going on with people being arrested for owning loli, shota and yaoi manga i was wondering if it could cause a hassle owning them? i don't live in the most open minded place (southern florida) and there's A LOT of ultra conservatives in my county and if i were to be arrested I'd be totally screwed if it were left to a jury for obscenity charges.........sorry if i posted in the wrong section btw

Trust me, you are safe with Battle Royale. It has been in USA and UK for many years and Tokyopop will have gone through a process to ensure it abides by all laws in the US.

As far as I know, all people who have been arrested have been importing from Japan where there is less censorship. If you buy books from your own country of residence, and they are a licensed and reputable publishing company, you are safe.

To be fair, BR is/was very popular, there would be a lot of people getting arrested if it was ruled illegal....

very true BUT i've been lurking on the cbldf website and there are quite afew stories about people buying comics legally and getting boned from it. there's even afew where the shop owner himself get's arrested for selling comics printed in the usa. kinda makes me wonder if alot of us are breaking laws without knowing it since alot of popular manga has what could be considered naked "children" like berserk, elfen lied, vampire hunter d and battle royale

The problem lies in "art." Go to a museum and you see slews of naked children in painting across the centuries (and of adults). Yet people of all ages to to art museum and see the junk of a lady or the frontal nudity of little boy. Public fountains have statues of little boys pissing.

Art is art.
Porn is porn.

There is a law that defines the difference and it really only comes down to--how understanding is your lawyer of the law. 'Cause nobody would win if their lawyer is closed-minded and thinks manga is "that tentacle-porn thing from Japan."

It's your private hobby. Don't talk to your neighbors about your hobby and no suspicions will rise. It's the guys who are out in the open and come off as creeps or actually sexual violate other people or download actual child porn that get busted .

If the actual puberty has been attained any sane person would accept that they are the Japanese comics equivalent to Romeo and Juliet. If you have depictions that can be reasonably considered prepubescent children the story is different.

Meh, don't worry. No one can really make a case against you with just that, you'd need a whole giant pile of child porn hiding in your closet to ad to it as evidence in court in order for any legal action to be taken against you.

It's art dude. If you ever find yourself in court, just keep with the defense it's art and you bought it in the US.

Since you are from the United States . . .

Most "porn" is prosecuted as obscenity. The fun fact about obscenity is that it excludes all drawn pictures specifically according to federal law (i.e. all States must follow it). I do know that there have been cases anyway and I have no idea how it is being charged. If have you the actual charges I could look into it. (Just don't expect a fast reply.)

Additionally consider Kodomo no Jikan. Until some people raised holy hell, Seven Seas was going to print this legally in the US.

Every country has number of rules for importing different products and services from other countries. So if you are importing products or services without the Govt. permission then you are doing black marketing. So Govt. takes legal actions against you.So you have to know all the legal system of you country and then you can handle all the things properly.

Of course you're okay with Battle Royale. That's like asking if an apple will make you morbidly obese.

I don't think you need to worry at all. I bought Aqua Bless from rightstuf (and I live in Canada, where the law on this kind of thing seems a little stricter), and that book blatantly depicts high school aged looking people in sexual situations. But the back of the book says "All characters in this book are at least 18 years of age", or something to that effect. I actually felt a little nervous when I bought it, being afraid that my package might get searched at customs and someone would be like "OMG CHILD PRON OUR SOCIETY IS DOOMED." But it was fine, and I still have the book. I think anything published in NA is fine. I mean, it got published after all didn't it?

That's why Seven Seas cancelled Nymphet, and why Dark Horse stopped releasing Shadow Star Narutaru, because there's some pretty questionable stuff in it. Don't think you have to worry about BR though.
