Vote For Gennosuke Kouga, Basilisk, as promised.
willag, there's no way that I am posting that treatise. Shorten it to two paragraphs tops if you want to see it used in the Guide entry. Anyway, the nightly update is now (finally) up on the OP, current through this post. We're now up to 120 with a 2+ score, so be checking through that single-vote list carefully to see if there are any that you've missed. New nominations will probably only be accepted for a couple more days at most, so don't dawdle if there's someone else you're still considering nominating. |

Ok, I have two ideas for entrants, but it's been too long for me to actually do proper nominations. The two main characters from L/R, Jack Hoffner and Rowe Rickenbacker, are cool cats. Both are laid back and don't really worry about anything. Plus, they come from a show rife with Beatles references. If somebody did a proper nomination, I would support them, but I don't think many people saw that show (according to the encyclopedia, only 443 :/ ).

Well am I late to the party or what? Better late than never, right?
Hmmm, can't tell if this will be a topic that will be easy to make a mini-game for or not. Surprised that I'm seeing some names, but most of the top runners are predictable. Seconding the two people that came to mind instantly when I thought of cool: Akira Tokizawa Eden of the East November 11 Darker than Black Seconding the top 3 that came to mind when I think badass: Guts Berserk Revy Black Lagoon Ladd Russo Baccano When I think of this character, I think glorious, but a bit out of touch and still a kid at heart. He has a very powerful and memorable personality, amazing charisma, and he is incredibly driven and he knows what he wants: Reinhard Legend of the Galactic Heroes And of course this man came to mind when I though of both cool and badass: Spike Cowboy Bebop Glanced over the list and only saw one notable missing nomination: Nominating: Sebastian Michaelis, Black Butler pic Type of Cool: General Cool (Primary), Badass, Suave Why He's Cool: Confident, suave, sophisticated and skilled, Sebastian easily straddles cool and badass, but leans towards general cool more than brutishly badass since he is a gentleman after all. He is the butler of the Phantomhive household and acts as Ciel's bodyguard, two jobs he is completely devoted to. Effortlessly keeping the facade of order alive and keeping calm even when things go wrong amplifies his overall coolness factor. Behind his gentlemanly appearance, resides a darker more sinister badass side. Get on his bad side, and he can make your life a living hell since he is one of hell of a butler in more ways than one. I also question Spoor being nominated under general cool. She is a bit of firecracker when it comes to personality, and I don't consider a temper to be contributing factor to being cool. I think it should be changed to badass. Lastly, since this is the coolest character contest, should coolness be considered for characters nominated as badasses? If so, I may need to vote down a few people. |

Last minute nomination:
Kanako Watanabe, Star Driver pic Type of Cool: General Cool Why she is cool: Kanako is a weird girl, married to an old rich guy despite being a high school student. Shi is also a member of the Glittering Crux Bridge. She has queer habits, for example: kissing people through the glass, speaking about sex related topics in the middle of a lesson and she keeps an alligator in her swimming pool. All of this makes her cool, albeit in a very peculiar way. |

Of the nominations I made two still only have my nomination vote. Kenji Harima not going on is no big deal, I admit that he's a weaker choice but I am quite surprised that no one has seconded and thirded and fourthed Michiko Malandro from Michiko e Hatchin. I know it's not a widely watched show but anyone who has seen it has to admit she's the picture of cool in a Brazilian Pam Grier type of way. The only fault of my nomination might be that I nominated her as a Badass and she should be considered a general cool character who can take care of herself.

Looked up Harima and he's nominated as general cool. Think he would almost fit better if he was labeled as badass because of #4 in particular. Let's look at the criteria that Key posted and see how he fares:
1. Should have a distinctive sense of style and/or class. Okay, he definitely has a distinctive style. Sense of class, not really, but I think this is the one criteria he satisfies the best. His character has a very specific style that shapes almost everything his character does. 2. Should be respected, admired, and/or adored by other characters. Besides possibly one crush that he's oblivious to, Harima really doesn't get a whole lot of respect, or admiration. Heck, often times he's receives quite the opposite and some of his actions prove his overall lack of dignity. 3. If a Bad-Ass, should be a combination of impressively powerful/skilled, tough, brave, and full of attitude. He's full of attitude, he's physically tough, he has bouts of bravery, he's a skilled artist, and sometimes he can even be full of attitude. However, on the emotional level he's a coward and horribly skill-less. Often enough to be used a consistent comic relief, he proves that he's a buffoon even when trying to attempt a simple task. 4. If not a Bad-Ass, must have some other aspect typically associated with being cool (e.g. popular and effective with members of the opposite sex, not easily fazed or agitated, gallant) Okay, anyone who knows Harima's character should burst out laughing when they hear this list of things and try to apply to his character. He's ineffective with the opposite sex, and one of the biggest running gags in the show surrounds his inability to confess his love to his biggest crush. Not easily fazed? Perhaps when it comes to a fight and macho men type of stuff, but on an emotional level, this guy is easily fazed. Gallant perhaps, but only in a comedic way. I'm not going to vote against him since he definitely fits the bill in some ways, and besides being one of my favorite characters he's kind of cool and a badass in sort of a way that an otaku could appreciate. I don't believe the general public would consider this type of character to be cool. He's honest to his feelings, he's passionate, he has a distinct style, but at times he's a little too eccentric and emotionally immature for his own good. And on an unrelated note, it's great to be on vacation after working 60+ hours a week for the last few months. Hopefully, this means I will have more time to post here like I have done with the previous tournaments. Last edited by Olliff on Mon Dec 20, 2010 12:38 pm; edited 1 time in total |

"Cool, albeit in a very peculiar way?" Sounds interesting, so I will do a rare thing here and Vote For a character I'm not personally familiar with - i.e. Kanako Watanabe.
On another note, don't get hung up on whether to vote for or against a character just because you feel they aren't correctly classified as a General Cool or Bad-Ass. The General Cool group has made a solid enough showing without forcing the issue (they're currently down only 62-52 amongst candidates with 2+ scores) that I may not bother to make separate Groups for Bad-Ass and General Cool. Or, alternatively, I'll make one Group each that is exclusive to one type and two Groups that are mixed and will make sure that all of the Either candidates and ones with questionable classifications get mixed into those Groups. Thoughts on this? Beyond that, the current update is now posted on the OP. We're edging towards a full bracket but are still a handful short, so I'm going to post a list of all of the current one-voters below to see if we can fill most of the remaining six slots with already-nominated options. (A 0.9 score, incidentally, means that the candidate has two positive votes but also one vote against.) Oh, and BTW, the current count in the fierce FMA internal rivalry currently has Scar on the outs. Oh, and BTW #2, Spike Spiegel is now just one vote short of tying L in the Intelligent/Clever Character tournament for having the most nomination votes to date. Single Vote-Getters To Date: Chirin, Ringing Bell, BA, 1 Cleo Corbielle, Glass Fleet, BA, 1 Count D, Pet Shop of Horrors, GC, 1 Ichiro Miyata, Fighting Spirit, GC, 1 Jack Vesalius, Pandora Hearts, GC, 1 Kenji Harima, School Rumble, GC, 1 Madara, Natsume's Book of Friends, GC, 1 Masaomi Kida, Durarara!!, GC, 1 Michiko Malandro, Michiko e Hatchin, BA, 1 Naomi Armitage, Armitage III franchise, BA, 1 Priss Asagiri, BGC 2040, GC, 1 Rinrin, Koihime Musou, BA, 1 Sachiko Ogasawara, Maria Watches Over Us, GC, 1 Sebastian Michaelis, Black Butler, GC, 1 Sheryl Nome, Macross Frontier, GC, 1 Shun Mitaka, Maison Ikokku, GC, 1 Tamaki Kawazoe, Bamboo Blade, GC, 1 Twenty Faces, The Daughter of Twenty Faces, GC, 1 Vegeto, DBZ, BA, 1 Haruhi Fujioka, Ouran HS Host Club, GC, 0.9 Triela, Gunslinger Girl, BA, 0.9 |

True there, I didn't put a ton of thought into choosing classifications. But the point remains that I admit that Harima is a slightly weak contender in either case and it's Michiko I really wanted to rally for and through your study I also see that Michiko should definitely classified as general cool instead of Badass. althoughthere is crossover. Considering the creators ofthe show-there's quite a lot of character similarities to ones in Bebop and Champloo. |

I'll second Armitage. Looking for those pictures reminded me that she usually looks pretty cool.
