I'd love to watch this anywhere but Hulu. I hope it either gets a great dub or they release it on home video soon.

There's one thing I've been wondering about Macross 7: How is it that a recently constructed, floating space city have a slum?

spoiler[Gamlin may like Mylene, but I can't recall Basara ever showing the slightest hint of interest in her. If I'm remembering correctly, this would mean the obligatory Macross Love Triangle(tm) does not actually exist in M7, except in the minds of everybody surrounding the three leads. Which would be exactly the kind of slightly-meta fun M7 excels at poking at itself.]

By the time that Macross 7 begins, the fleet is already in the seventh year of its mission. The section that contains the slum is a separate section. While it's never explained in the series why it's there, it is possible that it was a damaged and abandoned module from an earlier fleet that Macross 7 stumbled upon and salvaged. It certainly works when you look at the ship from Macross Frontier that has a string of similar sections trailing behind the main city section,

Macross 7 is the best Macross series IMO. Frontier had a strong story and ending, but was much shorter and wasn't as strong musically. Delta could have been the best Macross series, but then the second half fumbled it. SDF and Zero are behind the other three, and Plus is just bad.

According to my notes, the OVA eps. go somewhere between eps. 39 and 42 (IIRC there are details in the OVA eps. that put them no earlier or later than that). The movie (basically a slightly longer episode) also fits somewhere around ep. 39. They're fairly independent though, so you can watch them later if needed.

Recommended watch order of the series and movies:
SDF
DYRL
Flashback 2012
Plus
7 (with OVA and movie inserted as above)
Dynamite 7
Zero (chronologically it goes before SDF, but the jump back in animation quality from Zero to SDF would be very jarring if watched in that order, so I recommend production order for this series; watch before Frontier in any case because of references)
Frontier (get the longer director's cut version of ep.1 if you can)
FB7
Frontier movie 1 and 2
Frontier Labyrinth Of Time OVA
Delta (longer director's cut ep.1 also)
Delta movie 1 and 2

There's some story and animation bits in a few of the games, but don't worry about that unless you're going for hardcore fan status.

Hmm, I should watch all of Macross again some time.

I think it's deliberately mysterious, since the slum block isn't even on the 7's papers and Basara is not a registered citizen. Presumably someone put it there, but did it fall through the cracks of paperwork, or was it for a purpose...?

To my recollection, Macross Seven picked up a lot after the episode where Max and Milly teamed up in their custom VF-22s -- I wanna say the title was something like Papa and Mama in love once again! And it was basically a roller coaster ride from there to the ending, which did a lot to make up for how formulaic and repetitive the first half of the series was.

I really, really hope this show gets a reasonably-priced BD release, whenever that happens, if it ever happens. The Macross Plus fiasco has me here dreading the worst....

Babylon 5 has the same thing -- basically any city will always create Slums unless special effort (IE social programs) is taken to prevent it. Especially in a capitalist society where are there are so many ways to rapidly lose your money -- and therefore everything. So, yes, a new city would rapidly generate a poor and homeless population.

I always contend that the Love Triangle was indeed resolved, at the moment near the end when spoiler[Gamlin sings and wakes Basara up from his coma. Those two were the always the ones with the most chemistry, and Gamlin plays a great Tsundere game. Meanwhile, Gamlin just kinda sorta likes hanging out with Mylene and Basara doesn't care about her except as a living being and bandmate.].

Looking forward to FINALLY watching this series - my only exposure was having a fire Valkyrie model kit as a kid (and playing SRW Alpha 3). I do have one question from the review - not about 7 but about Macross in general. From the negatives:

Quote:
Not for everyone, may be too silly for some. If you're looking for serious space drama, why even consider Macross?

I grew up watching robotech and did watch the original SDF Macross subbed eventually. I don't really consider the original series (or Plus) to be very silly? Is there a general consensus that the series isn't "serious?" It's always had soap opera tendencies but it was very earnest and high stakes.

For me any Macross series other than Frontier, Delta and + are no watchers, the older series are too soap operaish and dumb.

You realize the review is counting the OVAs as part of the series, yes?

Different strokes for different folks!

I am the exact opposite.. M7 was my most disliked Macross spinoff until Delta made itself known. Frontier took awhile to grow on me, buy I enjoy it now. I gave Delta another chance recently, and my dislike got even stronger..

My opinion on M7 is still very meh, it starts off slow, the MC is annoying, and the primary antagonists are goofy. It does get very good at the end, but you have to go through a long slog to get there.

Regardless I am happy its available to fans without having to resort to sailing the high seas! But to those that do.. I say Ahoy!

lol
