The anime commercial I can never forget is the Johnny Chase commercial from T-mobile, advertising their Sidekick phone. At the time in 2003 it was just so novel seeing a commercial from a major company advertise with a clearly anime-inspired aesthetic. This was the same year Teen Titans premiered and two years before Avatar: The Last Airbender, so it was among the first to go after the recent anime boom that Toonami helped usher in. Oh, and Production IG also animated the commercial, so it had some weight behind it.
I do remember some people at the time saying Johnny Chase was annoying, but I dunno, I kinda like its quaint pandering to anime fans of the early 2000s. |

Never forget the YuGiOh anti-drug PSA from more than 20 years ago. |

The Hulu ad in there is likely the result of some marketer pushing the stuff that already does well. People continue to watch the big shonen titles, so it will make it look like the marketing worked. In certain context, it would be fine. That particular ad might be fine in a more generic setting trying to advertise to new people who have maybe heard of that DBZ thing. At an anime convention though? Now you're marketing it to people who know about and probably watched it elsewhere. That's the time to lean into exclusives since you're advertising to people who need to be convinced to add another subscription.

I'm still not over the ball of sapphic goodness in MV form that is that one Chocolat Kadabra ad showcased in another column https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c5j7lpWprro
For Luce I'd like to point out that she isn't a mascot for the whole catholic church but just for promoting a specific "event", but that doesn't diminish or deny the reality and conclusions of it all. Something more worth mentioning is how she's designed around the Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage, which is one of the few aspects of catholicism that is still fairly popular, even among non-believers. It doesn't get mentioned nearly as often as the anime influence but it does help make the mascot more endearing and approachable. |

I think my favorite one in the last few years was the Jujutsu Kaisen x McDonalds promotion with the black garlic sauce. That sauce was *tasty*, but nothing compares to how wild it was so go through the drive-through and end up with little pictures of Gojo and Yuji on my sauce packets.

Thanks - although we likely may have touched on that topic in school, I can't say that I remember much about it. I'll be researching it now! Much appreciated for this reply.

I found the ads for the line of Evangelion-themed power tools to be surreal. I almost feel like they could be a figment of my imagination except the images of the pilots wearing overalls and wielding tools colored like their EVAs are a thing on the internet.
That might be more of an "EVA Merch is everywhere" kind of discussion rather than an advertising one. |

That is not the reason given by the late Reuven Schossen (aka Ro'i Tov) but since he was murdered for (among other things) speaking out I will not say more. Full disclosure - I drive a Subaru Impreza. |

While I wish both our columnists a very happy Go Birds, I'm a little sad that we didn't start with the "Gran no Sponsor" dialog.
Did we just memory hole the "Marisa Stole The Precious Thing" style ad for the Samurai Mac? I mean, this too is yuri, but...... |

No mention of Code Geass every week featuring characters eating pizza from a Pizza Hut box? That was really in your face product placement and in almost every episode.

I still find Devilman Brutus Mercedes-Benz SLR hilarious.
Why is Devilman being used to sell Mercedes cars? Who knows! |

Surprised no one has mentioned the Honda sponsored One Off (hey, it has Saori Hayami in it).

Well, Mercedes Benz is no stranger to using anime since they did it back in 2012 with Production I.G., yep both of them team up together for this particular ad. So yeah, Mercedes-Benz is no stranger to anime. Also, who can forget when Microsoft in 2010 decided to create the mascot anime character, Nanami Madobe to help sell Windows 7. Here's the ad!!! Oh, and she's voiced by Nana Mizuki, so that makes it more interesting and up the value of this ad and the character. |

I’m still waiting for the anime commercial that burns itself into my memory the same way the Batman Diet Coke commercial did. https://youtu.be/AKWuyuPXvqU?si=QHxNYLMaxXcs72cv
Granted, that had the advantage of being in front of the VHS release of Batman. |
