I had my own first-hand experience with this right as it went into effect. The day before a Hololive order was scheduled for delivery, DHL contacted me to say I now had to pay import duties on it. According to Cover Corp, the plan for US orders will now be to collect at the time of ordering, which probably explains the spike in shipping costs. Shipping costs jumped a lot years ago, and cheaper shipping options that were "paused" due to Covid were just plain eliminated. Now, it costs even more.

I'm sure it is accurate to say that disc prices will simply be raised in response without anything said in particular. Just another input cost passed to the customer.

I believe that it is likely that most of Crunchyroll's Blu-ray discs are being manufactured in Mexico by Vantiva, but I am happy to be corrected on this assumption.

For many, many years Funimation and later Crunchyroll Blu-rays had a "Disc Made in Mexico" print on the back of the packaging or shrinkwrap.

However some very recent releases like Frieren don't. So I assume that Crunchyroll switched it's pressing plant some time in Fall 2024.

Thankfully, Intellectual property rights are tariff-free!

While they slide by the physical tariffs, they are charged withholding tax on international transactions. Luckily if you get the right paperwork in place a lot of countries can waive them (including US/Japan), but not all are so lucky...so that can factor into cost a bit.

Yeah, there's people complaining that their being sent duty bills from FedEx from their Japanese orders. Duties are based on country of origin, not where they were shipped from. Anyone that thinks they can get around duties by shipping from AmiAmi or Amazon Japan are in for a surprise. Likewise, BBTS has posted duty notice on order pages that have been marked up to reflect a duty included in the price.

Frankly I'm really not looking forward to receiving my future orders, it's not unusual for me to import $300+ most months. The really annoying one is my Pop Up Parade Chimera Falin. I ordered her from the Japanese shop because there was a special pre-order campaign that knocked 10% of the price making her cheaper than getting her from the US GSC shop. But now, since she's almost certainly made in China, I'll be paying an extra 10% making her more expensive than the the US shop release. At least I'll have her faster, I guess... Rolling Eyes

And yeah, I've been trying to tell people for the past year how things are going to be taxed based on their parts, not where they were made. Just food alone, nearly everything we eat uses ingredients from other countries. The majority of our spices, coffee, chocolate and edible oils are imported. All of our out of season fruits and vegetables are imported, much of our seafood and meat is imported. People think we can just build more farms and plant more crops, but most of the USA experiences winter, and that seems to be true now more than ever thanks to climate change.

The de minimis exemption suspension is currently... suspended... so I guess get those in-stock orders in now while you can and hope they get to you before things change again! Rolling Eyes
