Vote For:

Claire Stanfield from Baccano!
Lad Russo from Baccano! (Both are quite the lovable psychopaths.)
Spike Spiegel from Cowboy Bebop

Vote Against:

Sesshomaru from InuYasha. Don't get me wrong. I do think he had his bad-ass/cool moments (with some tenderness thrown in there), but he walked a very fine line of being cool and being a jerk. For me, he crossed it too many times.

Key, you didn't respond to this earlier, so I'm going to reiterate that I'm against the idea of separating the Badass and General Cool characters into essentially two different tournaments.

Though I don't know if I'll play in the tournament, maybe I can get a suggestion through.

Nominating:

Yuuko Ichihara
, xxxHolic & Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle, Pic 1, Pic 2
Type of Cool: General
Why She's Cool: Yuuko is the definition of unflappable. Usually seen draped across a divan, the word surprise is not in her vocabulary because, as she continually says, everything is inevitable. She knows what's ailing you and what you need to cure it before you do, but she'll patiently wait until you figure it out for yourself. Her smooth-as-silk demeanor is the only one that can counteract Watanuki's spastic outbursts. Plus, she's the cool breeze for two series: xxxHolic and Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle.

Nominating:
(First, the coolest two ladies to ever ride a scooter)

Haruko Haruhara, FLCL pic 1 pic 2
Type of Cool: Bad-ass bass guitar-weilding alien
Why she's cool: Fascinating and Frustrating, she's the spontaneous, crazy, charismatic, nutcase who promises to bring some life into a "boring" little town. She randomly runs over pedestrians with her Vespa Scooter or hits them upside the head with her bass guitar in attempts to produce otherworldly results- producing robots, more guitars and other things. She trades bullets with inept government types, and is able to hit satellites in space with baseballs and leaves her favorite victim, Naota, longing for more.

Michiko Malandro
, Michiko e Hatchin pic1 pic 2 Too large pic
Type of Cool: Bad-ass > Classic Cool, prison escapee
Why she's cool: Michiko is wIldly independent, detached, domineering, bossy and very talented at escaping very heavily guarded prisons. Calculating under pressure, she continuously escapes the manhunt that is constantly underway to recapture her. At first her single minded purpose is to find the man she loves but in the end she finds she will do anything to protect Hana.

And who says funny can't be cool? (Well, the final results will probably prove that, but I'm nominating anyway)

Johannes Krauzer II / Soichi Negishi, Detroit Metal City pic 1pic 2
Type of Cool: Bad-ass, when he has to be
Why He's Cool: Normally Soichi isn't cool at all, in fact he's incredibly lame, but when he takes on his stage persona of Krauzer II, Demonic lead singer of the Death Metal band Detroit Metal City he tends to let it take control. As Krauzer he is a relentless provacatuer, plays a part of a man who is thought of as a cruel, sadistic rapist and murderer. He frightens and delights his fans and basically just frightens anyone else. And sometimes Soichi's Krauzer personality melts into his real one (see pic 2)

Kenji Harima, School Rumble pic
Type of Cool: General Cool, Bad-ass Delinquent
Why He's Cool:Tenma, Eri, and the rest of his friends tame him but he's still the most feared delinquent around when he wants to be. He's got the bike, the leather, the shades, the beard and the giant pen made from the spine of a Tuna. He has the confidence to beat any school kid in town, if only he had the confidence to ask Tenma out.

(and for old times sake...)

Nabeshin, Excel Saga pic
Type of Cool: General Cool
Why He's Cool: He takes his style from Lupin III but can hold his own. Of course, his Afro is the Coolest thing ever. Ladies want him, and want to give him soup. He's calm and collected, always has a plan, an M-16 in his hair and is there when you need him.

NOMINATE:
Please see this post for my Scar nomination.....
Roy Mustang, the Flame Alchemist, FMA franchise pic
Kind of Cool: Bad-Ass
Why he's Cool: Roy Mustang, like Spike Spiegel firmly straddles the "General Cool" and "Bad-Ass" categories. His "General Cool" bona fides are clearly established by the well-established loyalty demonstrated by his subordinates (see Scar's nomination for the same argument). However, that engendered loyalty -- while impressive* -- simply doesn't hold a candle to.....

THE FLAME ALCHEMIST'S DEMONSTRATED BAD-ASSERY DURING BATTLE: Make no mistake about it -- when he pulls on his cloth-ignition glove, it's time to break out the asbestos fireproof suits!**

*He is even able to earn Ed's respect -- a respect formed during the crucible of battle.
**Anyone (and I do mean anyone) who can take out a Humunculus is a certifiable "Bad-Ass" contender. I'd nominate Tim Marcoh, but nominating a health care worker as a "Bad-Ass" candidate is just so wrong!

Toushirou Hitsugaya, Bleach pic
Type of Cool: Bad-Ass
Why he's Cool:
I haven't seen all of Bleach; nor have I read any of the manga -- so it is entirely possible that any number of the assertions that I make here will be false. I sincerely hope that this will not be so and I apologize in advance if that does indeed turn out to be the case.

Being the youngest captain of the squads/divisions, T.H. has something of an inferiority complex in regard to the rest of the captains. He compensates for this by assuming an extremely severe and foreboding persona which is at complete odds with his physical appearance (almost comically so, as a matter of fact). By itself, his assumed persona wouldn't be enough to make him a Bad-Ass; but that persona, combined with his fighting skills (which, by the way, are top notch -- it's not to his discredit that he only lives at Sousuke Aizen's discretion when they do cross swords) truly does make him a genuine contender for Bad-Assership.

@Spastic Minnow:
While I disagree with your nomination of Haruko Haruhara, I will not cast a "con" vote on it as a "bad ass" interpretation is not entirely unreasonable (I merely regard such an interpretation as being grossly simplistic); I will, however, explain my reasoning for disagreeing as I do with your nomination. Basically, I agree with this crique critique of FLCL; and if one accepts the premise that there are different meanings of -- and with multiple levels to -- the story, then it becomes impossible (for me, anyway) to consider FLCL as being merely a story. I just have to quote this:
FoolyisCooly wrote:
Strip away the layers of sexual innuendo, parody, alien technology, self-reference, symbolism, and so much more and you are left with a strong coming of age story starring a boy struggling with his liminality. Add back those same layers and the result is a manic, carnivalesque anime with a solid core of intertextual personalities performing their unique roles in complete harmony.
So when I consider any of the FLCL characters, it is impossible for me to consider just their personalities.

But that's just my 2¢; opinions can -- and rather obviously do -- differ.....

VOTE FOR:
  • Sawa, Kite
  • Kallen Kouzuki/Kallen Stadtfeld, Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion and R2
  • Sesshomaru, Inuyasha franchise

Found someone to nominate!

Kisuke Urahara of Bleach Pic 1 Pic 2 Pic 3
Type of Cool: Can be either one but I'll go with General Cool (for now, unless several others think otherwise.)

Why he's cool: When we are first introduced to him, he comes across as this weird shop owner who has quite a bit of knowledge of spirit-related subjects. But as time passes, we see that not only does he deal in spirit items and knowledge but we see him become teacher, mentor, friend and occasional tormentor of Ichigo and friends.

Kisuke is the Man behind the Curtain. The Manipulator. Who, usually, does it for the good of the main cast. But he is also a very bad-ass person. That cane of his is his Zanpakuto which he uses to kick Ichigo's ass and use against Yammy with great effect.

********

I think my write-up sucks. So, if someone wants to do a better job, I don't mind. I just really wanted to get him nominated.

When I posted those other nominations, I knew I was leaving somebody out, but I couldn't remember who. Now I do.

Nominating:

Space Pirate Captain Harlock, Endless Odyssey (among others, but specifically that because that's all I've seen) pic
Type of cool: Stone-cold badass
Why he is cool: This man is absolutely the personification of cool. In the second episode of EO, he asks a police man who has appeared at his ship with a cadre of other officers (they think they have captured him) why he is there. The man proceeds to give Harlock an F you speech, and after he is done Harlock says "I see," and then shoots him in the head and gives an F you speech to the corpse. All while the dozens of other officers simply stare. Plus, just look at him.

We now have 5 characters from the Fullmetal Alchemist franchise. The limit is 3. I'm not caught up on Brotherhood unfortunately, so for the moment I'm going to refrain from voting against or for anyone, but others may want to consider which of the three they feel are most deserving to be here.

I Vote For:

Lelouche Lamperouge, Code Geass
Say what you will about him, but his over the top antics and flamboyant style make him fun to watch and earn him some cool points. His careful plans and "muahaha" moments also help.

Kisuke Urahara, Bleach
Ladd Russo, Baccano!

I Vote Against:

Toushirou Hitsugaya, Bleach
You know, based on early Bleach I could sort of see a bad-ass nomination for him, though I wouldn't find him an especially deserving candidate. But sadly, Bleach has not been kind to him for... well, quite a while.

It started when he first faced Aizen. Sure, Aizen is the big bad, but even so, that encounter hardly earned Hitsu any bad-ass points. After that, Hitsu suddenly seemed to find himself in the position of being the go-to guy to hype the villians.

I can't remember any fight he's had where came off looking good, though my memory of some of the filler is a bit vague. It seems like every fight he either lost, was interrupted, or won but with enough issues where he didn't look so good. Heck, his very first fight against Gin, where he was looking the most badass with his impressive shikai, still resulted in him getting outsmarted and outplayed.

And his latest encounter with Aizen seals his fate.spoiler[ He gives Aizen a self-righteous speech, then admits mere seconds later (at a slight provocation from Aizen) that his entire speech was a lie and he just wants to kill Aizen. Then he gets deceived by Aizen's zanpactou, and while the rest of the captains were deceived as well, it's Hitsugaya who ends up stabbing his childhood friend. Upon which he loses it, charges Aizen in a blind rage, and gets taken out and loses his arm. Oh, and his blind attack may be at least partially responsible for giving Aizen an opening to attack his allies.]

And honestly, we already have two candidates from Bleach and I can think of many other people who are more deserving for the third spot. (I only havn't nominated one because I'm waiting to see if some more deserving characters from other franchises can fill out the list.

EDIT:

LydiaDianne mentioned the possibility of someone else doing a write-up for Kisuke Urahara. Since he was someone I was going to nominate myself, I figure I might as well give Key another choice. I enjoy doing the write-ups anyways, it's tracking down good pictures that I dislike.

Urahara is a goofy, laidback shopkeeper who sells various pieces of spiritual merchandise to Soul Reapers in the real world. He's also a former Soul Reaper captain who's supremely powerful and a genius to boot. He's series' protagonist Ichigo's teacher and (depending on how you look at it) manipulator. He's, in his words, "a simple candy store proprietor." He's the definition of mystery.

Both goofy and at times incredible creepy, you never really know what Urahara is thinking. When he shows up, you half expect him to save the day, and half expect him to reveal that's he's actually the real big bad. Both are things he is quite capable of doing. And honestly, how can you not love a guy who turns an inflatable copy of himself into a decoy and uses it effectively against not just thuggish villian Yammy, but mastermind villian Aizen?
