Kusuriuri a.k.a Medicine Seller Ayakashi - Samurai Horror Tales, Mononoke pic Type of Cool: General Cool, Mysterious Medicine Seller Why he's cool: Always calm, Ksuriuri, a mysterious Medicine Seller, demonstrates a profound knowledge about supernatural beings: mononoke and ayakashi. He possesses an enchanted sword with which he can exorcise ayakashi and mononoke if he learns Katachi – shape, Makoto – truth and Kotowari – reasoning. He is usually a cool (pun intended) observer of events where fights against supernatural beings is a mere excuse to dissect the deepest and darkest recesses of people’s mind. All of this makes Ksuriruri a fascinating character with considerable charm. Madara Natsume's Book of Friends pic Type of Cool: General Cool Why he's cool: Madara is a powerful ayakashi that is found of eating and sake. Most of the time, he is in the form of a cat. Scenes that involve him are a source of great comedy. Yoko Nakajima Twelve Kingdoms pic Type of Cool: General Cool Why she's cool: Yoko is a an ordinary schoolgirl that is transferred by a mysterious person named Keiki to another world where she encounters many obstacles that she eventually overcomes and becomes a queen worthy of respect. Xellos Slayers Next, Try pic Type of Cool: Badass Why he's cool: At first Xellos appears to be a mysterious and good for nothing priest that turns his tail whenever troubles emerge. In fact he is a cunning and powerful Mazoku who thousand years ago killed many dragons with just one finger. He travels with Lina, the main heroine, to carry out Phibrizo’s plans in Slayers Next, whether he helps her and the rest or attacks them depends on what is convenient for him at the moment. |

Hope I did not mess this one up, but here is me trying!
Nomination: Zolf Kimblee from FMA Brotherhood http://cdn.myanimelist.net/images/characters/13/73900.jpg Type: Badass Why?: This guy definitely has got some style. A psychopath within the military, highly skilled alchemist, does not hesitate to wipe off from the surface of the Earth upper commandment (or anyone else as a matter of fact. His motto seem to be: rules are there to be broken. And he does it all in his perfectly ironed white suit and being all extremely polite. Nomination: Mugen from Samurai Champloo http://www.animegalleries.net/albums/samurai_champloo/mugen/champloo_mugen0112.jpg Pic OK I give up, hope this link works! Type: Badass (sorry, the notion of badass is a new to me, so hope I am applying it correctly!), he seems more like a badass than a cool character anyways. Why Cool?: A combination of amazing skills, fearless attitude and humour makes him quite a badass character- you might make fun of him, but secretly, you admire him/fear him. He might be looking as if he did not care about anything at all and if he did not value his life, but when necessary, he is capable of huge sacrifice in order to save a friend. Nomination: D from Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust Pic Type: General Cool Why?: D is one amazing character. He can fight dozens od monsters at the same time, can cut you down without a blink, copes with the most powerful oponents out there and leaves the scene without a scratch, and seems to be quite knowledgeable about all sorts of things. He is a man of few words, but has also got a softer side to him. Nana Osaki, NANA pic Type: General Cool, Punk Musician Why?: When both titular characters are introduced in NANA, they are at first defined by their differences. Nana "Hachi" Komatsu is the cute one, and Nana Osaki is the cool one. She drinks, she smokes (still sadly a sign of coolness in anime, just look at the Bebop crew), she has a tattoo, and she is the singer for a band with its eyes firmly set on stardom. She doesn't take shit from anyone and very much lives according to her own impulses and always looks the part of a rocker to the t. I will also vote for: - D |

I'll probably pick 2 or 3 favorites and write about them later this week. |

Tomboyish, courageous and naïve, she is determined to become a noble prince and throughout the series she tries to help and protect Anthy. Shigure Sohma, Fruit Basket pic Type of Cool: General Cool Why he is cool: Shigure is a perverted book writer that is often a great comic relief, occasionally he acts very mature and gives some good advice to the younger members of the Shoma family. |

Balalaika Heiwajima Shizuo Twenty Faces Naomi Armitage Against: Reki - I do not see this character competing in a tournament of cool characters and badasses. Some points were made, referring to her unusual image. She has that, and a certain strength of character, but in my opinion that does not qualify her as a badass. Nagi - what is she doing here? If she's badass or cool, then this tournament is open to 90% of teenage female leads in anime. What's next, nominating all the tsundere because they can hit people? Taiga - see right above. Favourite characters =/= cool. She's just another tsundere. Nabeshin - I'm sorry, I really think that this is no place for purely comic relief characters. He might act cool sometimes, but this does not justify being selected to participate in this. Sachiko Ogasawara (Maria-sama) - I have not seen the show, but "gentle charisma" is not a trait I would attribute to a general cool or badass character. In fact, it's quite the opposite. Nothing in her one-line write-up or pictures tells me she's worthy. Sheryl Nome (MacrossF) - she is a quite typical female character type, what I usually call "strong-ish woman" - she has spirit, but unlike, say Motoko Kusanagi, she does not have any qualities that make her particularly cool. Popular, charismatic? Yes, she's an idol, that's her job. She's no manipulator, she is in fact mostly reactive, instead of proactive. This is, again, not the type of character this tournament is made for (if we had a strong female characters one, she would fit in quite well). I'd vote against some others, but they're just weak, so I suspect they'll be thrown out early anyway. Nominating: Roger Smith, The Big O pic Type: General Cool Reason: something like a Batman with a mecha, Roger Smith leads the cast of a stylish series. He's an investigator, mecha pilot, and a tomato all in one (let's give him credit for that, not everyone can be a tomato). Even if, arguably, all characters in the series could be better developed, I find them surprisingly endearing, and well worth at least competing in this tournament. Hei aka Chinese Electric Batman, Darker Than Black pic Type: Bad-ass (though he is cool) Reason: able to kick just about any other contractor's ass through his electric powers and martial arts, he later kicks ass even without contractor powers. He may be infused with the powers of the first contractor to appear on Earth, and by now he... may be a new creature altogether. Overcoming death by crushing, stabbing, freezing, and a multitude of other ways, as well as heartbreak and alcoholism, Hei single-mindedly kicks ass through to his goal. He also has a very distinctive character design, that nets him bonus points. {really, guys? three pages of a coolest/bad-ass character tourney, and no Lelouch, Alucard and The Count? is there an unspoken agreement not to mention them?} Last edited by Mister V on Mon Dec 20, 2010 4:21 pm; edited 7 times in total |

I must confess that I forgot about the Count, but I thought that Lelouch and Alucard (as well as Light & L from DN) were popular enough to make it without me listing em.

He is a master of both being cool and keeping his cool when pursued by the world's top law enforcement, or evil gangsters that he just swindled. He'll never back down from a challenge and his extremely flexible stature and stealthiness will get him out of any tight situation. As for being culturally refined there's no doubt about that as he is a connoisseur of international food and wine, drinks liquor, enjoys beer, tea, and coffee. |

Firo Prochainezo, Baccano! pic Type of Cool: Bad-Ass Why He's Cool: Firo has the kind of laid-back style that comes from being a romanticized image of a Prohibition-era gangster. While he can easily just wallop rival gangsters or cut-throat hobos unarmed, he's appearance is far from physically intimidating. Rather, he looks just like a guy who would be fun to hang around with, trade stories with, and share a few (illegal) drinks with. Plus, he completely charms an almost entirely emotionless girl into falling for him. Twenty Faces, The Daughter of Twenty Faces aka Chiko, Heiress of the Phantom Thief pic Type of Cool: General Cool, Gentleman Thief Why He's Cool: Twenty Faces is an brazen criminal with an incredible reputation. He makes a spectacle out of his heists, publishing notifications in newspapers announcing what and when he will steal before, say, removing the entire roof of a house to get to his target before seemingly walking on air to escape to his personal zeppelin. He is followed by a devoted band who have nothing but respect and admiration for him, and the title character, whom is willingly kidnapped by him, quickly comes to see him as a father figure. Furthermore, many of his heists are not for his own benefit, but to return treasures to rightful owners or to destroy dangerous military technology. Dick Saucer, Dragon Half pic Type of Cool: General Cool, Pop Idol, Dragon Slayer Why He's Cool: Dick Saucer is everything a girl could want in a teen heart-throb: a glamorous and famous singer with beautiful features, and a strong and brave knight, renowned for defeating dragons. The eponymous Mink, her two best friends, and Mink's villainous rival Veena are all utterly obsessed with Saucer, turning into gushing idiots when they do actually encounter him. Voting Against: Soul Eater, Soul Eater - because he is a poser. While he may exude an aura that he is chill as ice, this is because he is obsessed with cultivating such a reputation. A person who is genuinely cool doesn't have to make such a calculated effort to be cool, that's just how they turn out. Supporting: Spike Speigel, Cowboy Bebop |

While there are a few more I'm tempted to vote for, some of the same ones I'm hesitant about because they are classified as Badass. To me being a badass is not very synonymous with being cool. Being excessively badass kind of contradicts some of the notions of coolness because they opt for violence and a show of strength rather than dealing with things in a calm and intelligent manner. But then again for this tournament badass is its own category where cool badasses will be competing against other cool badasses (didn't we already have a biggest badass tournament though? - looking at the next post, I guess not). Nevertheless I have my own opinion of what is cool, and badass isn't quite a fit for me. During the tournament I foresee making a case against certain characters simply because they are badasses but not particularly cool. I've been thinking about this, and I question the necessity. We did nothing of the sort for the Duos Tournament, which a number of people originally wanted to be just a Couples Tournament, and there was never a problem with romantic pairings being inherently stronger than parent/child, sibling, or partner pairings. Also, it's a bit frustrating for those of us who have long wanted an exclusively Badass Tournament, and now we're getting half of one (assuming I understand your intentions correctly). Having essentially two different tournaments running concurrently and then having the victors face off at the end seems like it would cause more controversy about the final victor, as their won't be the established basis for comparison between dissimilar character types. |

I really do think the Count ought to be nominated.
Edmund Dantès / Gankutsuou / The Count of Monte Cristo, Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo pic Type of Cool: General Cool, Avenger Why He's Cool: He may be the King of the Cave and a thorough villain, but the Count is also the King of Cool. Effortlessly, cunningly he seduces everyone around him, especially the young Albert, as he seeks to redress the grievous wrong done upon him. It's this combination of seducer, manipulator, victim and avenger that make him just about the most memorable villain in anime. Also supporting: Lucy, Elfen Lied Fee Carmichael, Planetes The Battousai, Rurouni Kenshin - although I've only seen the OAVs and the movie, I think they show the Battousai in his essential form Mugen, Samurai Champloo, (though he's sort of Spike Spiegel light) Utena Tenjou, Revolutionary Girl Utena Last edited by Errinundra on Mon Dec 13, 2010 5:36 am; edited 1 time in total |
