Afro Samurai (TV) Good Afro Samurai was by far one of the most visually enticing anime featuring the kick-ass voices of Ron Pearlman and Samuel L. Jackson. One of the very definitions of cool in the world of anime featuring a kick-ass soundtrack along with a mix of the old and the new in the medium of "samurai storytelling."
Akihabara @ DEEP (live-action TV) Very good A true otaku delight! This is one of the funniest and most appealing live action chronicles of the otaku spirit I have ever seen. Chronicling the escapades of six otaku who have their own problems in life, the six find comfort in on a website and come together due to the website founder Yui. The six then become the defenders of Akihabara and start their own troubleshooting group; which is dedicated to helping the denizens of Akihabara. Hilarious, Fun, and full of heart, Akihabara@Deep is a winner!
Akira (movie) Excellent A true sci-fi anime masterpeice of epic proportions. It is absolutely amazing to see an anime that uses absolutely no computer animation and reach the heights that Akira has. Akira has also become a cult classic, the film itself has a cult, that just proves how amazing it is. A
Amazing Nurse Nanako (TV) Bad Drab, annoying, and an overall bum rush of a combination of fanservice, violence, sexist comedy, and a ditsy big breasted nurse named Nanako. Make Amazing Nurse Nanako a worthless attempt in all of those fields; As if those fields were compotent in the first place (some of the fanservice was eye catching though). D-
Astro Boy (TV 1/1963) Good A classic in the parapets of anime. Astro Boy blasted onto the scene and made its mark in the hearts of future anime fans in America. The story is heartfelt, the animation is crude but somehow touching in its own way, and the moral message highlights on the issues of the 1960's very well and even resonate today. Hey, that's Osamu Tezuka for you! I hope the movie does not kill it!
Azumanga Daioh (TV) Very good Follow the lives of high school girls. Laugh and learn by taking a trip down memory lane as high school is thrown back at you but in a fun way that makes watching this anime fun and with a rewatchable value that is high, Azumanga Daioh can be watched over and over agian. A-
Baccano! (TV) Good A very entertaining but very violent anime series set to the back drop of nineteen thirties depression era. Mobsters, alchemy and bloody violence all come together in an intricate and weaving plot line that is fun and rewarding. For those who are willing to pay attention.
Barefoot Gen (movie) Very good A powerful and accurate attempt toward retelling one mans story of childhood survival after the bomb drop. Powerful, honest, and graphic in every way.
Berserk (TV 1997) Very good Gritty, Dark, and overall violent and full of medieval warfare. Berserk slashes its way onto the scene and into the mind with unrelentless sense of choatic beauty all at the same time full of drama and even a dash of romance. Berserk will make anime fans go, well... Berserk. B+
Bible Black (OAV) Decent By far the most disturbing hentai anime series in history. Bible Black has become a hentai icon, quickly becoming one of the biggest selling adult animation series of all time. Based upon a game by the same name, Bible Black has some very effective visuals and sex scenes. Not at all for the faint of heart. C
(La) Blue Girl (OAV) Weak A truly horrible hentai peice of work feature a horrible (and hilarious) dub. A total spew-fest of tentacles and mayhem from the master of hentai macbre Toshio Maeda. I find this series to be nothing but an excuse for tentacle rape and gross mutilation scenes.
Boin (OAV) Good Boin has potential, especially in the sex and cosplay field, but there is really nothing too remarkable about it. It is a good starter hentai however due to the fact that there is nothing too extreme in this hentai.
Bounty Dog (OAV) Worst ever An overall faiure in every sense of the word, Bounty Dog is horrible and can be used to torture both anime fans and non-fans. Filled with bad coloring, annoying sound effects and music, and voice acting that is an overall pain for the ears. Be afraid, be very afraid... F
Castle in the Sky (movie) Masterpiece One of the classics in the Miyazaki cannon, a true masterpeice that cannot be missed. Lush visuals, steampunk setting, accompanied by the all around goodness of the Miyazaki heart. Castle In The Sky is a lush treat that makes viewing true fun for all ages.
(The) Cat Returns (movie) Very good One of Studio Ghibli's later peices directed by Hiroyuki Morita, The Cat Returns is a real sweet plot featuring good moral values that any parent would want to instill in their child. There is just one problem; It is way too short! As I was done with this series, I was left wanting much more. Too bad.
Chobits (TV) Very good Another CLAMP anime, but this time it is more male based due to the main character being male and the fact that his female companion, Chi is the one truly stealing the spotlight. Chi has become a true moe icon for several anime fans and I hope she will pass the test of time.
Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion (TV) Very good This anime series was designed by CLAMP and due to its usual artistic edge, CLAMP has made this series even more popular. Follow the escapes of a young Vigilante, who has one of the most unique abilities in anime plotline history. This series utilizes morality questions and usual CLAMP charm to create a really cool anime experience.
Cowboy Bebop (TV) Excellent One of the grandaddies of cool in the world of anime, Cowboy Bebop is a real ambeince of a treat complete with a Jazzy score, followed by a rag tag (yet loveable) crew of characters all meshed together with a kick-ass combo of choreographic fight scenes that make it seem more like an action movie than an anime.
Cowboy Bebop: The Movie Masterpiece By far one of the best anime films ever made. By the opening credits the viewer will be "drawn" in by the realistic look of the people within the character design, soon to be followed by a kick-ass dose of comedy, action, and some down-right soulful drama scenes, and lest we forget about Yoko Kanno's wonderful soundtrack.
Crimson Climax (OAV) Good The title is disturbing and due to that, I somewhat shyed away from this particular peice of hentai, but after watching it, it really was not all that bad. Crisp visuals and an actually decent plot but soon to be encroached upon by some distrubing death scenes, Crimson Climax actually had some sad scenes that if people actually paid attention to the story, it would actually sadden them. Who would have thought such a thing would come from a hentai.
Death Note (live-action movie) Very good In actuality, I preferred this over the anime or the manga. This truly is one of the greatest live-action adaptations of a comic series I have ever seen. The casting was perfect for all of the characters and the actor chosen for L was dead on like the original. A true tour de force.
Death Note (TV) Very good When bored but brilliant student Light Yagami decides that it is time to clean the world of evil through use of a shinigami's death note he gets more than he bargained for when the famous detective L is on the case. What makes this anime shine is the fact that it does not pick sides by telling you who to root for but leaves it up to you. Creating an allegory on power, corruption and justice.
Death Note: The Last Name (live-action movie) Excellent Even better than the first one, a true epic in every sense of the word as the battle between light and L comes to a climatic end. Even better special effects and action scenes than with the first one. A near three hour film yet went by so quick due to the fact that it was so enjoyable.
Digimon Adventure (TV) Very good Destined to go down into the history of the anime greatness. Pretty good for an anime that was dubbed and then played on Fox Kids Network. Full of charming characters and a good soundtrack, along with some wonderful moral messages, Digimon is a real paradigm in the world of anime for the young.
Digimon Adventure 02 (TV) Good A wonderful an example on how to make a sequel to a kid's anime series. Mixed together with a great array of both familiar characters from season 1 along with new faces. I have fond memories of this anime and I continue to have fond memories.
Doomed Megalopolis (OAV) Weak A truly lackluster peice of work that features lackluster characters, lack luster plot lines, lackluster art, and truly lackluster music, the best word describe this anime is, well...Lackluster. One or two truly effective scenes in the realm of atmosphere, but nothing to really hook the interest of the viewer. Truly a winner in the field of mediocrity.
(The) Door into Summer (movie) Good A pleasant anime movie which is along the lines of French Cinema. There is a review of it on this website under the column of "Buried Treasure" that is worth a look if you want to know more about it.
Dragon Ball Z (TV) Weak Even though this anime has brought many a teenage boy into the wonderful world of Japanese animation; DBZ does noy capture the charm or humor of it's predecessor and drags on to heights of tedium.
Dragon Pink (OAV) Good
Escaflowne: The Movie So-so Not nearly as well crafted as the series, but definitely darker and grittier. The plot seems rushed and seems like nothing but an abriged version of the series. One might as well watch the series, I cannot fathom why this movie was even conceinved in the first place.
Eureka Seven (TV) Very good
Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone (movie) Very good
Fantastic Children (TV) Excellent A lesser known anime that really hits the philisophical spots, along with a somewhat chilling yet simple soundtrack. The artwork looks like a wanna be cross between Osamu Tezuka and Hayao Miyazaki, other than that, this is a true classic and just recently been released in a specially priced boxset.
Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children (movie) Decent I have been a long-time fan of Final Fantasy VII, ever since I played the game back when I was 14. However, this CGI anime misses the mark in several places. Some of the music remixes (One Winged Angel as heavy metal theme, I dont think so) were unwanted and the story lacked the original emotion that the game was famous (or infamous) for. The visuals are stunning and the fighting is fasted paced and frantic. Thats the problem though, its all about the frantic fighting! But other than that, it is worth a quick view. If your're a fan.
Final Fantasy: Unlimited (TV) Decent
FLCL (OAV) Excellent Crazy, random, and downright aggresive in presentation. It works! FLCL is a true gem in the world of Avent Garde. The rock music and refrences are also kick ass! Dont believe me, watch it for yourself. If your feeble mind can take it! Muwaa HAA HAA!
Fruits Basket (TV 1/2001) Very good
Full Metal Panic! (TV) Very good A real military classic and following the exciting adventures of Sousuke Sagara and the attractive high school girl Kaname Chidori as they battle a system blotted by corrupt politics and a violent future.
Full Metal Panic! The Second Raid (TV) Very good This is one of the greatest sequels to an anime series I have seen in a long time. Filled with all of the action of the original but even more suspensful along with a truly gripping plot followed with a truly memorable villian who is in the annals of greatest anime villians. He truly stole the show.
Full Moon o Sagashite (TV) Excellent
Fullmetal Alchemist (TV) Excellent
Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo (TV) Very good
Genshiken (TV) Good
Genshiken 2 (TV) Very good
Ghost in the Shell (movie) Masterpiece
Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence (movie) Good
(The) Girl Who Leapt Through Time (movie) Masterpiece Step aside Miyazaki! Mamoru Hosada will give you a run for your money! Heartfelt and full of the challenges of growing up and teenage life all done in a way this does not patronize or filled with sex induced jokes and one liners that so many teen anime seem to be filled with, but instead immerses you into a believable world of a teenage girl who gets the unbelievable power of time travel. To see this film is an utter delight!
Grave of the Fireflies (movie) Masterpiece Increasingly heartbreaking and visually stunning peice of work by Isao Takahata. Grave of the fireflies is by far the greatest animated film in history, Perfect in nearly every way. A+
Gunslinger Girl (TV) So-so
GUNxSWORD (TV) Decent A anime that is okay, but misses the bar. It comes off as being a wanna-be Trigun, but just lacks the interesting characters and a like-able protagonist. The Mech designs are stupid looking, and the music is forgettable. A somewhat dull experience.
Gurren Lagann (TV) Very good
Haré+Guu (TV) Good
Harmagedon (movie) Worst ever This is by far one of the worst pieces of crap I have ever laid my eyes upon in my entire anime fandom career. Trite and dead emotionally with horrible visuals and horrible stereotypes it is an overall experience that is, well...Horrible...
He Is My Master (TV) Decent
Hell Girl (TV) Good Hell Girl is a wickedly enjoyable anime featuring a thought-provoking plot line of revenge and redemption along with some dark visuals and one of the most memorable quotes in anime history. Hell quickly becomes repeatative, but if that minor detail can be ignored, than it is quite the "hellish" treat.
Hellsing (TV) Very good
Heroman (TV) Good
(The) Hills Have Size (OAV) Good The Hills Have Size, being such an idiotic title really does not do justice to such a realstic and well planned hentai. This hentai (unlike most) shows the really ugly consequences of adultry and abuse. Truly something that is lacking in the world of hentai. It also showcases a truly unique viewpoint on the fine line between lust and love.
Howl's Moving Castle (movie) So-so Howls Moving Castle is the latest anime from Miyazaki. But it is my least favorite. It lacks both the heart and great characters that his other works are resonated with. I find that I was somewhat disappointed in this one and that I was left expecting better from one of my idols. But eh, cant win them all. But it is still worth a look just for the downright BEAUTIFUL visuals and some touching moments.
Ikki Tousen (TV) Not really good Panty shots, panty shots, panty shots, (woot!) despite the fact of how much I love those words, Ikkitousen is nothing but a titalating showcase of fanservice and busty schoolgirls fighting eachother. In the realm of plot and story development, this anime is at the bottom of the totem ploe.
Ikki Tousen: Dragon Destiny (TV) Decent Unlike its predesccesor, Dragon Destiny really holds it's own and is not entirely dependent of fanservice. It actually has a somewhat well thought out plot. Improvement in that area. only the sequels will tell if this anime series will improve in the plot department.
Inuyasha (TV) Good
Jin-Roh - The Wolf Brigade (movie) So-so
A Journey Through Fairyland (movie) Masterpiece Sanrio's masterpeice set to classical music and pastel colors of paint and mosaics, being something more than a Japanese answer to Fantasia. It actually has a plot revolving around Michael who learns important lessons while traveling out of the flower fairies land and falls in love. A beautiful symphony of sight, sound and emotion. I need to know why nobody has re-released Sanrio's work on DVD!
Kiki's Delivery Service (movie) Very good
Kino's Journey (TV) Good
Living for the Day After Tomorrow (TV) Very good Asatte no Houkou may seem like a stupid story if one only reads the synopsis; but upon watching this anime I sank my proverbial teeth into a bittersweet coming of age tale that put a warmth in my heart. The characters are down to earth and overall believable and likeable. A real treat for the shoujo fan masses (and those of us who are not). B+
Love Hina (TV) Good
Loveless (TV) Good Loveless is by far one of the most suprising anime tales. This anime feature Shonen-Ai themes, but does it in a way that is not overly-sexed up and without being overbearing. This anime is stuffed with dreamlike animation and saddingly inducing trance-like music with some of the best opening and ending themes. Loveless also has some overtones of rape and abuse thrown in making it anime that is not for everyone. I enjoyed the atmosphere however and I recommended for anyone that is looking for something more than just a Bishi in a Shonen-Ai anime.
Lucky Star (TV) Good
Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro (movie) Excellent
(The) Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (TV) Good A pleasing suprise of color and modern science fiction starting off in latent fashion and then moving into the realm of complex yet still retaining the fun an bright spirit it started off with, creating what has become an anime icon!
(The) Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (TV 2009 renewal) Bad Awful...Just awful, while pandering to the fans desire to see Haruhi continue the studio has forgotten about what made Haruhi such a success in the first place. By adding the godawful endless eight arc and taking away the "fun" factor, this shameless piece of trash is not even worth the time, even for the more patient among us!
Metropolis (movie) Masterpiece
MoonPhase (TV) So-so
My Neighbor Totoro (movie) Masterpiece Truly a classic in every way due to the fact that Totoro is now an Icon character. I can make that deduction due to the fact he is the mascot for Studio Ghibli. My Neighbor Totoro is one of the greatest children films ever.
My-HiME (TV) Good
Nadia - The Secret of Blue Water (TV) Very good One of the lesser discussed series by Gainax, with character designs by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto and also directed by him, the mind behind Evangelion. Except he was not crazy when he made this well crafted charming series, he was quite sane thank you.
Naruto the Movie: Ninja Clash in the Land of Snow Good
Negima! (TV) Good
Neon Genesis Evangelion (TV) Masterpiece
Ninja Scroll (movie) Good
Now and Then, Here and There (TV) Excellent Now & Then, Here & There is a true drama masterpeice, yet one of the lesser known and is usually overlooked. That is truly unjustified. This anime has EVERYTHING! a dramatic plot full of sorrow, hope and insanity showing the true effect of war on children and touching in extremely tough subjects such as war, rape, child soilders, and corrupt governement. Especially King Hamdo, he is the greatest anime villian in the history of all anime, and the most memorable.
Nurse Witch Komugi (OAV) Decent
Office Lingerie (OAV) Good Stunning... This series is stunning to behold visually. The female character design is flawless and the sex scenes run smoothly and seamlessly with the plot. A hentai series well worth seeing.
Otaku no Video (OAV) One of the best mockumentaries I have ever seen. Atru milestone and montage to the strength of the spirit and way of the Otaku. However, it is a little too esoteric to show the average crowd due to all of the refrences to anime and manga along with the otaku culture.
Ouran High School Host Club (TV) So-so A truly overrated series that really does not have much going for it except a few bishonen and a cross-dresser living with her transvetitie father (like father like daughter eh?) I am tired of hearing fan girls sing the praises of this mediocre anime series.
Paradise Kiss (TV) Good Enter the world of fashion through Paradise Kiss, a visually rich and stunning peice of animation, mixed with a rich tapestry of light and shadow followed by wispy and beautifully designed characters that make this series a must for any shoujo fan. The only problem; It's plot is way to esoteric to reach a broad audience and most would not be interested. But it is still well worth the time.
Perfect Blue (movie) Masterpiece A complex mind messing thrill ride that is worth every minute spent. This anime would make Alfred Hithcock proud and would also give him a run for his money (R.I.P), featuring plot twists that could easily be misconstrued and beautiful animation that adds to that very effect. A true delve into what happens to the human mind during insanity.
Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea (movie) Very good
Porco Rosso (movie) Excellent One of Hayao Miyazaki's less praised, yet also one of his best. The animation captures the feeling of flying excellently and the Italian cultural refrences are dead on. Another thing that makes this anime really interesting for any history buff, the setting is pre WWII facist Italy.
Princess Mononoke (movie) Masterpiece
Puella Magi Madoka Magica (TV) Excellent
Ringing Bell (movie) Very good One of the forgotten gems of the harbingers of Hello Kitty, Sanrio tells a tragically true and brutally honest childrens films every put together. Little lamb Chirin's life is thrown into disarray when the wolf king takes the life of his mother. So in order to defeat the wolf, he must become one... What starts off as an innocent tale turns into a striking cautionary tale of revenge and anti-conformity.
Robot Carnival (OAV) Masterpiece A true unsung classic of the anime artform, a tour de force of the anime world! A parade of beautiful allegories and montages showing the talent and genius of nine different anime directors.
Rozen Maiden (TV) Very good Rozen Maiden was a really well crafted series featuring dolls though battled with eachother to gain the admiration and love of their father (talk about sibling rivalry) However, what really sold me on this series was the adorable Hina Ichigo. I fell in love with her at first sight, she was so adorable I just wanted to wrap my arms around her and squeez her tight! Actually, I have a PVC statue of her in my room. I rest my case.
Rozen Maiden: Träumend (TV) Very good
Rurouni Kenshin: Trust & Betrayal (OAV) Masterpiece The blood stained prequel to Rurouni Kenshin. Trust an betrayal is a real tear-jerker and a classic in the world of Japanese animation. The art is crisp, the music is sorrowful and the fighting is quick and brutal along with a serande of gripping drama and beautiful character design.
S-CRY-ed (TV) Good
Sailor Moon (TV) Good
Samurai Champloo (TV) Very good
Samurai Pizza Cats (TV) So-so
Sea Prince and the Fire Child (movie) Masterpiece Being of Sanrio origin, this anime can be easily be construed as hello kitty-esque fare. But being much more than that, Sirius no Densetsu is a masterpeice in visual fare and storytelling all wrapped together in a winning musical score written by the great Koichi Sugiyama. What's not to love?
Sex Warrior Pudding (OAV) Decent Silly and over the top. Tounge and cheek in every sense of the word, Sex Warrior Pudding is one semi-winning hentai series that can be enjoyed by any perv on a firday evening.
Sexfriend (OAV) Decent Sexfriend, there really is not much you can say about it. The title says it all, however, this anime fulfills so many male school fantasies, it's not even funny.
Sextra Credit (OAV) Decent
Shaman King (TV 2001) Good
She, The Ultimate Weapon (TV) Good A ambitious effort followed by some actually touching scenes that are tear-jerking, but overall Saikano tries to hard and lacks a story that really makes it a classic. It's quite sad actually, this could have been a masterpeice if the creators worked on the art along with some of the big holes in the story.
Speed Grapher (TV) Good
Speed Racer (TV) Good
Speed Racer (US live-action movie) Good A truly ambitious live-adaption of the beloved classic, the first true "live action cartoon" directed by the Matrix masters the Wachowski Brothers. This films sometimes is a little too bright. The film features seziure inducing scenes along with an overly long story. Overall, however it is still worth watching and I enjoyed it.
Spirited Away (movie) Masterpiece One of Hayao Miyazaki's latest treasures, Spirited Away features the self-journey of a ten year old girl named Chihiro who must venture into a bath house for the spirits in order to save her parents after they have been turned into pigs. Lightly-epic, a winning soundtrack and wonderful artwork. This is my favorite Miyazaki film (next to Totoro) and is the first anime to recieve an academy award, beat that Disney! (The irony of that matter is that Miyazaki's films are liscensed by Disney).
Steamboy (movie) Good
Street Fighter Alpha (OAV) Not really good
Strike Witches (TV) Decent A somewhat fun but somewhat uncomfortable series for me not knowing whether I should be "aroused" by the fan service or be drawn apart by the somewhat latent child eroticism which stays away from child porn but still conveys an uneasy feeling. Filled with impressive aerial battle scenes as well as likable characters, makes this series watchable.
Summer Wars (movie) Excellent The second of Mamoru Hosada's anime triumphs deal with the message of technology and a family that still maintains tradition and stay's together while saving the world together from a super virus that threatens the very fabric of social network that rules the world they all live in. While the aspects of OZ seem slapped on, and compared to The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars feels more rushed and thrown frantically together. but none of the less it should not be missed. The best part about this movie is the family dynamic and music which are both uplifting!
Tama and Friends (TV) Decent かわいい ですね! 僕 はたま と 友達 お エンジョイ です でも もとめ は短命 います だけど、 ため に子供 が 善 います。
Tekken: The Motion Picture (OAV) Awful
Tekkonkinkreet (movie) Weak
Trigun (TV) Very good
Urotsukidōji: Legend of the Overfiend (OAV) Decent I was immensly surprised by Urotsukidoji: Legend of the overfiend, It actually has a good story with one of the best male protagonists in a hentai I have ever seen; 天野 寂 (Amano Jyaku). I found this series to be touching in some scenes with the two young lovers; 南雲 and 暁美. The ending music credits were also nice. I never heard such a good classical score. For a hentai.
Urotsukidoji: Legend of the Overfiend (movie) Good
Vampire Hunter D (OAV) Very good Without D there would be no Hellsing, so I guess that he's the father of vampire anime. In it's own way. I recommend this anime due to both D himself and also the fact that Yoshitaka Amano (The genius behind the concept art of the Final Fantasy games) does the artwork. I guess I'm partial...
Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust (movie) Very good Superior to its predecessor in both art and style set in a steam punk world and filled with the same creep ambience of the original but with a fresh coat of paint making it both a treat for old and new fans.
Viper GTS (OAV) Good A suprising hentai peice which has a good story and the art is both poppy and also very well detailed and colorful which makes some of the sex scenes very vibrant and "enjoyable" (perverted side coming out).
(The) Vision of Escaflowne (TV) Masterpiece The vision of Escaflowne is a milestone in the world of anime and rightfully so. A real fantasy epic with a tastes of steampunk added in along with gritty visuals and a soulfully uplifting musical score makes this anime a must see for any fan.
Welcome to the NHK (TV) Very good An anime that discusses lonliness and mental disease in a way that sucks in the viewer and makes it somewhat fun but also pulls on the heart-strings in some cases. This anime speaks of the life of a hikikkomori who suffers from what I think is Schizophrenia. Which is in its own way, like a beautiful mind; but ten times more interesting, fun, and actually realistic. Take that Russel Crowe!
X (movie) Very good
xxxHOLiC (TV) Very good Another CLAMP hit, XXXHolic is truly a well deserved venture into the world of the folklorish supernatural. Accompanied by the Yellow Submarinished elongated character design which exaggerates the CLAMP style to an extreme degree, this medium does not detract from the plot but actually helps enhance it.
Yu Yu Hakusho: The Movie (movie 1/1993) Not really good A true disappointment in every sense of the word. Smarmy and uncreative, a true shameful adaptation of an otherwise cool series.
