I was not interested in more Monogatari because I was satisfied with how Owarimonogatari wrapped things. However, I still gave this new entry a shot, but I gave up after 1 episode because it felt so unspired.
I am done with Monogatari. I really like this franchise, but NO MORE WAS NEEDED. |

The first time I watched Kizumonogatari I couldn't believe it was the same people doing it considering it felt so different. No monologues, really insane animation and more action sequences than most of Bake. It kept reminding me of Devilman Crybaby especially when gore happened. It wouldn't surprise me if one scene was an homage to Dragon Ball Super Broly as there is sequence where Araragi is shoved through floor by Kiss Shot like Goku by Broly but in an area filled with ice.
But yeah the "fanservice" Nisemonogatari had scared me a lot when first viewing it. I guess it was a harem parody but it goes so far that I had to enter Redit and confirm I was an adult to learn what was the toothbrush scene in curiousity. While I had no problems with perverted jokes, it bothered me often that Araragi actually had Senjougahara as a girlfriend (kinda like what happened with the second season of Mushoku Tensei?). Still, Monogatari presents an adult Araragi and he is loyal to Senjougahara I find myself wanting to explore that. |

Hm... after reading through that, I'm still not sure if this is a series I should be diving into, but if nothing else, I've gotta say that—
—is definitely a contender for one of the greatest out-of-context quotes out there. |

The very little I know about this franchise makes me...well, steer far clear would be a fair way of putting it, but content aside, as an outsider it just feels utterly impenetrable to me. It's like an endless parade of sequels and prequels and interquels, all with another prefix slapped onto the title. I have extreme pity for anyone who legitimately wants to get into it.

I watched the first twelve episodes of Bakemonogatari back when they first streamed, and have to admit the whole "pay an Aniplex of America premium to see the last three episodes" deal might have contributed to me deciding "I can see what other people like about this series... but I just don't feel the same way." Maybe the simplest way I can sum up the way things went for me was a gathering impression the build-up to the payoffs of each plot arc outweighed those actual payoffs. After that, the sheer bulk of the franchise in animation got to feel overwhelming.
On the other hand, I did start buying the manga adaptation from Vertical, and must also admit the Oh! Great artwork was appealing enough I've kept reading it to what I understand is the penultimate volume. |

I found Monogats to be an exercise in diminishing returns, where the stuff I liked about it slowly declined in quality/volume and the amount of things I found annoying about it only grew with each season. I loved 3 of the 5 arcs in Bakemono. Rather disliked Nisemono and slogged through it on the promise of better fare in the next entry. Enjoyed 3 out of 5 arcs in Second Season. Had haphazard results with the various OVAs that came out, and then got so tired with Owarimono that I never bothered to check out the second half.
Really, what soured my patience for the whole thing was seeing the butt-ton of other things Nisioisin has written, and finding every last one of them tedious and overwrought. |

Heh, that's the other thing: I watched the (similarly-named yet legally-distinct) Katanagatari, and its ending made me so viscerally angry for how abjectly terrible it was that I'm not very inclined to dive into more of Nisioisin's work. |

I’m into some pretty impenetrable interests myself, mind you. Like I dunno how anyone who wasn’t into Touhou Project 15 years ago could realistically be expected to get into it nowadays. Or like Bang Bream, as a more recent example. I’ve more than once over the past year or so heard people say things along the lines of “I wish I could get into Bang Dream, but the backlog is so dense and varied and disorganized, I wouldn’t even know how to.”
I feel about Monogatari the same way I imagine “outsiders” feeling about those examples. Like I’ve spent my whole adult life hearing about how much people love it, but “my whole adult life” is a phrase that refers to a longer span of time than it used to. I kind of feel like the ship has sailed on me ever infiltrating Monogatari. |

Funny, I loved Katanagatari (enough to watch it 2 or 3 times), but could never get into Bakemonogatari. |

I hope Monogatari goes on for longer than One Piece. More is always needed. Family Season probably won't get animated for another 5 to 10 years and it's the best part of the series. |

I finally watched all if Monogatari Series at the end of last year and it's probably the best decision of my life. It's honestly the best piece of fiction ever created next to the excellent Island visual novel from Frontwing.

I already mentioned this in the previous ‘carried by the animation’ column, but while I think Monogatari’s Bauhaus-inspired minimalism was definitely a huge part of what attracted viewers to the show, I do feel it was its initial take on otaku tropes, wrapped up in a cohesive story, what built up the fandom in the long-term.
We had already seen numerous shows examining 'otakudom' during the 2000’s, whether being unflinchingly honest (Genshiken, NHK), or just slightly self-aware & willing to get meta (Haruhi, Kannagi), but Bakemonogatari was the first one I remember having a far more commentative slant at the tropes & overall vibe of the culture at the time. What if the classic tsundere was that way from building up layers of protection against the memories of past abuse (ok, Asuka was exactly the same, but anime media had spent the past 10+ years stripping away that core aspect from every subsequent clone)? What if the kindly next-door type who would help anyone out was that way because she was so prone to mentally excising any negative emotion that would cause her harm that she had turned ‘goodness’ into an automated response? And let's not even get into what the likes of Nadeko would eventually imply. Ultimately the franchise managed to hit a real sweet spot between being observant of the culture & framework surrounding otaku media, while also not being gratingly self-aware to specifically make the story about that, or shining too much of an unflattering light on the fandom itself. Add to that all the (then contemporary) hyper-specific memes and pop culture references, & it’s no surprise the show was such a hit. I’m about halfway through a rewatch before checking out Off/Monster season, & I’m still surprised how much the show sings when Araragi isn’t around. I thought he was fine during Bakemonogatari & the Kizu movies, but even by Nise you get the sense that there wasn’t much development left to be had for him, so the story is forced to rely on his worst impulses & quirks. Sure, the novels eventually start to poke at the flaws in his inherent sense of justice, but he himself never really changes as a person, so if you aren’t particularly amused by pederasty or incest gags, time with the wider cast growing outside of his line of sight is more than welcome. I’m particularly excited to catch up with the new season as a result. |

This franchise ought to be right up my alley, but I've never been able to get past the first 4 or 5 episodes because of all the blink-and-you'll-miss-it text. I just can't with a series that takes me 45 min to watch a 23 min episode. I think if I should find myself bored or we get another light season like this one, I might try one more time, going in with the self-imposed iron-clad rule that I cannot pause or rewind no matter what. If I miss half of it, I miss half of it. If I can manage even one season without feeling like it was a waste of time or too much of a slog, I might give Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei another go too.

I watched this show during the day. I eventually stopped when I started limiting myself more to legal streaming. Hitagi End was probably the last one I saw but I do remember liking that one. I'm really digging the latest series.
