There's a top ten thread on this forum and I've gone there several times in an attempt to discuss my ten favorite anime...problem is that I never have because I don't know what to put on the list. I have no problem with the number one spot, Kanon 2006, it's the 9 other spots that are problematic. There are shows that have a lot substance and are great such as ef ~ a tale of memories vs shows that don't have any substance, but are flat out hilarious like Fumoffu and School Rumble. Shows that I think are just flat out fun to watch like Slayers and shows that are so good that I can't watch them again like 5 cm/s. All this doesn't even include nostalgic shows like Sailor Moon, Cardcaptors and Ronin Warriors that I'll always love. Still yet are guilty pleasures like Lamune and Futari H that I probably like a lot more than I should. Even if I had a top 50 list, I wouldn't know what order to put the shows in.
It just feels like something as simple as making a top ten list shouldn't be so difficult; especially since it's a scientific fact that men love lists. Has anybody else tried to make a top ten list and just taken a deep sigh instead? If you can manage to make a list, how the hell do you do it without constantly second guessing yourself? I just hope I'm not the only anime fan who can't make a top ten list.

Your problem seems to be that you can't make up your mind what you want your criteria to be for your Top 10 list. You're conflicted over whether you want to make one based more on quality or pure entertainment value, and how much impact you want nostalgia to have on either.
My recommendation? Do what I do: make up separate Top 10 lists for the best anime you've ever seen and for the favorite anime you've ever seen. Many people fail/refuse to differentiate between the two (what they like most is the best to them), but I think it's an important distinction. I've seen a lot of anime that I liked immensely but would never acknowledge as being a top-rate production in any critical sense; My-HiME and My-Otome are series that immediately springs to mind. (Can't put Fumoffu in that category because I do consider it one of the two or three best comedy anime I've seen.)
Granted, you may still have a hard time whittling down your lists even with that separation, but that should make it easier. If the exact rankings within the list become a big headache then just say, "these are my Top 10 in no particular order."

I pretty much just rank shows and movies in tiers now. There are shows I can say are top tier (for my tastes) and then second tier and third tier, and then, if I am forced to assign numerical rankings, I just rank them within the tier alphabetically, since any numerical ranking based on other criteria I can come up with would be just as arbitrary.

I have the same problem. I can never come up with a definitive list. Some days I'll think that (for example) Paranoia Agent would be on the list, while other days I think it might get nudged out by other shows. Not to mention I'm always watching new series and movies which alters my list. I find it easier to just put all the categories into 3 basic groups, "Good", "Ok", "Bad". This is a system that has very few changes to the mental list so it's just simpler to keep track of.

Mine is strange amalgamation of enjoyment value and production value, VS rewatchabillity that all mishmashes in my head to create my crazy version of a favorites list. All the titles in it tend to be on the more profound or serious sides of things. Although to be fair I haven't updated my Top Ten in that thread at all for a LONG long time so I doubt it's really accurate anymore.
I'd say start with your highest rated titles, any masterpieces or excellents you may have, and narrow them down from there. That's what I did.

If the topic does not list specific criteria for the list, then it is safe to assume that it's a list of what the posters' favorite shows are. "Best" is not a specific criterion. Examples of specific criteria include choreography, consistency of animation, pacing, etc, which, as you can see, may still include sub-elements. The sticky topic in ANN is not specific. It's safe to treat it as a favorites topic.
Personally speaking, I've never managed to construct a favorites list that actually reflects what I like best. I start listing series, find some kind of trend among the first, and then start searching for other series following the same trend, with the result that the top n list becomes top n list following a certain trend. The last time, my top 10 consisted entirely of Sunrise series.

I can kind of understand, I have had a bunch if favirouts but at times I can be at odds about how good something was and how much I enjoyed it so a list becomes hard. Like for instance I realy enjoyed Zero no Tsukaima, but others might say it was not as great, it holds pretty high for me as the first anime I watched in sub only. Or Full Metal Alchemist, though I know it was a good one, I have enjoyed something like Inukami! more, which is probably of lesser quality.
I also have a hard decision between whether I prefered Clannad, or Kanon 2006. Often I think that Clanad might have been better in some ways, but for some reason I always look back at Kanon even better. I tend to not realy make a list except maybe have favirouts and what I liked about specific series.

As in the case of what I assume to be many other people, the upper echelons of my Top 10 were easy for me to compile, whereas lower down less clarity exists. The End of Evangelion shocks, scares, disturbs and saddens me, and yet I find it somehow compelling. How I should compare this to my response to Patlabor the Movie, which was different entirely, presents me with the impossible task of weighing each one against the other. They both fight for a place in my personal Top 10, and with subsequent additions to my list, I fear some relegation will be required.

Another problem is that the top list may change. It's not that hard to make one initially, but then how do you compare a new show you really like, to one of top ten that you have watched 5 years ago? The quality standards have changed over time, and the newer show will also be more fresh in memory... So there isn't really a way to edit the list because it's impossible to rewatch all the series every year or so.
Yet another one is that, for me at least, there aren't enough shows that meet the criteria. Sure there's lots of shows I love, but does that make them top-10 worthy? The number of shows I could rate "masterpiece" (excluding movies) is way under 10.

Absolutely. In fact, I gave up on making a top 10 months ago. I simply can't look at my collection and determine a listing. Should [series A] be ranked over [series B]? Ugh. Too much mental thought.
Now I stick to a #1 and the rest fall under the "How well do I want to rewatch this series?" category. Those that bubble to the top of the list would be those I'd recommend to people. The rest... are paperweights I'd tell others to watch online before tossing cash at them.

It's not really an issue for me. I generally just do it based on which series I enjoy the most. The thing is though, this largely coincides with the anime I actually think are the best. If I really enjoy something enough to say it's in my top 10 then it's probably more than 'well it's not really good but I enjoy it'.

I'm pretty sure I made a top 10 list on ANN forums in the past, but I doubt I still agree with it. Truth be told, I'm afraid of checking the top 10 list I made over a year ago. Nowadays, I can't even figure out which one would be the best. If I'm to do my top 10 list again I'll probably do like PetrifiedJello, selecting which ones I want to rewatch the most and list them (that's probably wrong since many animes could fall on the list because you've rewatched them many times already, but I'll stick with that).

I've been trying for months to make a definitive Top 10 list so I can post in that thread, but alas, I just cannot decide. The text document I use for my draft has been edited so many times it is probably suffering from genetic damage.
So anyway, you're not alone.

I haven't attempted a top 10 list yet because, to date, I have only watched 54 series in their entirety and 16 movies & OVAs. I figure I'll think about a top 10 when I've seen at least 200 series in their entirety (including classics like GitS and Cowboy Bebop which I have not yet seen).
Probably the approach I'll take is to go by genre: i.e. pick the best of 10 different genres (including 1 Guilty Pleasure). I expect it is going to be really hard.

No trouble here when it comes to picking favorites. I have 8 series rated "masterpiece" so all I have to do is pick 2 more from the excellent rated ones. However, if you asked me to rank those top 10 from best to worse, that I wouldn't be able to do since I like each for different reasons. When I first started posting on this site a few months ago, many of my ratings were higher, but I change them after re-watching. The first time I watch something I usually like it more. Now, only shows that I still enjoy very much after 4 or more viewings remain masterpieces. Everyone who is having trouble deciding should also do this. Re-watch several times and cross out those that become boring.
