I recently finished watching the TV series and OAVs between last Friday and the following Sunday.

I really like the series and might put it in my top 10. Although filled with LOTS and lots of melodrama, I still found it quite enjoyable.

The music, art, and animation, although not great, was decent. And the voice acting was very well casted. I'm now on the Takehito Koyasu bandwagon. But what I like most about this show is its story.

The story may seem dull and overdone by those who aren't in to this sort of theme, but I think this title really brought out the shoujo side of me. Aside from X (TV) and this show, I can't say I've seen any other series that qualify as shoujo (though I may just be forgetting.)

The OAVs though are another story. The first one seemed to jump around a lot in only 9 episodes and felt like it was really rushed. And the Eikoden OAV was just bleh! I couldn't stand that Maayo girl, and I wish she would've died. But as bad as the story seemed, it was nice to see the characters in better animation style, though I didn't like all of those CGed monsters.

Anyway, getting back to the TV series:

spoiler[ The whole tricked rivalry between Miaka and Yui was very full of plot twists and drama. It was also kind of touching in all of those romance scenes between Miaka and Tamahome/Hotohori.

What I thought was very catching though were the deaths of some of the stars of Suzaku. When I first saw Nuriko die, I almost cried, and that's pretty rare for me (thank goodness I didn't Anime smile + sweatdrop. But it seemed everytime one of them died, they had to go out in a blaze of glory. It seemed each of their deaths had to make a big scene so we'd never forget them, no matter how significant or small their roles were. Very nice touch. I was especially moved by Hotohori's death.]

I've already said this in another post, but I'm now thinking of getting Ayashi no Ceres. I hear it's great and hope to pick it up very soon.

So, is there anything else out there that's similar to this kind of anime? I've heard Escaflowne is a bit similar, and I've already seen it, so don't suggest it.

Also, I'd like to hear anyone else's opinons (preferably good) on how they feel about Fushigi Yuugi or any title similar (Ayashi no Ceres.) Thanks a lot and have a nice day everyone Mr. Green !

I've only seen part of FY, but all of Ceres.
FY, for the most part is the epitimy of a shoujo anime series. Though, I would say Sailor Moon probably holds the #1 spot.

Ceres is very good. I found it to be less..."fluffy" than Fushigi Yugi. The whole Toya thing was a bit weird, but, hey, he's nice to look at, so we'll roll with it...

For both of the series, though, I really suggest reading the manga. The manga has more detail and you can't go wrong with Yuu Watase's artwork.

I enjoyed FY. It's definetly up there for shoujo series. I suppose though that when you are looking for similar types of series, are you looking for the fantasy aspect? If so, you could go for something like Magic Knights Rayearth, which is also shoujo. Although it is a bit dated, the story is fairly well done. Smile

Yeah. Something that's fantasy. It doesn't have to be shoujo, but I think shoujo would give it a little more emotion.

Escaflowne is great, though it's been a while since I've seen it. Record of Lodoss War OAV is pretty good too. Inuyasha's OK, but REALLY long. And I'm sure I've seen a few more, but I can't remember right now. Anime catgrin + sweatdrop

But yeah, I'd like something with a bit of a medieval fantasy setting. It can be action, comedy, or shoujo for all I care. Actually I was thinking of checking out the Slayers series. I hear they're funny.

Yeah, Slayers and Rayearth are definetly ones to watch then.

Lodoss is also a classic worth watching for that type of genre.

I looked it up in the Encylopedia, and it doesn't appear to be completely released on DVD yet. Is it?

I also looked this title up. And thankfully, all 6 episodes are on one disc. That's GREAT!

I'll definately add these to my list of things to buy. Arigato gozaimasu, no da! Wink (one eye open, just like Chichiri, Laughing)

I believe that only season 2 of Magic Knights of Rayearth is out on DVD. I don't know why Media Blasters didn't release season 1 on DVD too.

Umm.... No, I have the first season on DVD as well. From media blasters.

It was released both as a box set as well as individual discs.

I've only seen season two available as a box set. Oh, and if you go through price grabber, make sure you avoid the potential bootleg offers on half.com (just like ebay, half.com is flooded with 'em)

Really? That's why I couldn't find season 1 box set at Best Buy and a few other video stores because it doesn't exist. Anime smallmouth + sweatdrop

Well, now you know that it does exist... I see it in Suncoast occasionally, but it would be much cheaper to get it onlne.

Once again Geneon steps in with another wonderful.... thing.

I've been wanting to try this out, however don't want to spend a few hundred bucks on a DVD set which I might not like.

And with 7 eps per disc it's a bargin!

FY is really good. I remember when I first watched it I couldn't get over how corny it was with all the romance everywhere, and I of course laughed at it, but hey, for some reason I kept watching it. T.T Yuu Watase outdoes herself sometimes.

I like to think of FY as the shoujo Tenchi.
You guys are saying that Sailor Moon is pretty much the #1 shoujo show. I'll agree with that, even though the show doesn't have the best quality in many area. Allthough I'll have to argue with FY taking the #2 spot. Utena has to be in the top 2 of shoujo titles. In fact, I'd lean towards that more for the #1 epitimy of shoujo in quality of story. Utena rules Cool

But yeah, some must seen shoujo:
Utena
Please Save My Earth
Cardcaptor Sakura
Ayashi no Ceres
Fruits Basket

Magic Knight Rayearth I'm iffy on. CLAMP fan that I am, I love it, but it's definatly not the best of CLAMP stories, even if it did pretty much start them up. On CCS, avoid if cuteness irks you, but... since you like X so much, maybe you'll find the ironic amusment most have in watching something so cute and sweet by the same people who did X.

Well, he did say fantasy, which does rather limit the titles...

especially more as it seems to me he is looking for the medieval, swords and sorcery type...
