About a year ago, I gave up on looking for the next volume of Legal Drug every time I was in a book store. Has CLAMP made a Legal Drug vol. 4 yet? Also, does anybody know why they stopped?
Thanks Anime smile

Legal Drug is one of the CLAMP series currently on hiatus (along with X/1999 and Clover). CLAMP has said they plan to work on it sometime in the future, but they've said that about X as well and it's been sitting at 18 volumes and a bit for a fair number of years now (I believe that it's six, though I could be wrong, that's just the number that comes to mind).

So, no, there is no new volumes; no, we don't really know why they stopped (at least I don't think we do).

The Volume 18 of X/1999 was released in Japan in Sept. 2002 and I'm not sure about the English Volumes since the Encyclopedia only lists Volume 14 in July 2004.

As for Legal Drug, Volume 3 was released in Japan in Sept. 2003.

As much as I love both of these series and would like to see Clover re-released so I can read it...I'm not holding my breath. I've actually taken my volumes off of my shelves and packed them away in a separate box since there's no use reading them since there is no expectation for them to be finished.

Okay, so that's almost 5 years. Not too far off from 6, plus that doesn't necessarily say when the last chapters were published, since I know that the Japanese manga has a chapter or two of what might someday be Vol 19.

I didn't realize Legal Drug had gone that long without anything new though. If they ever start up with it again, I'd definitely want to pick it up because I do like CLAMP, but if it's just going to sit at 3 volumes forever then I'll leave it on the bookstore shelves.

...so does CLAMP just get bored with a series and put it on indefinite hiatus while they work on another?

It's hard to tell. The reason X/1999 was stopped originally was because there had been a string of violent events in Japan that apparently echoed close enough to what had been going on/would be going on in the manga, so they decided to stop it until enough time had passed. However, five years would seem to be enough time, hence no one really holding their breath on that getting finished. Clover I believe was put on hiatus because the magazine it was being serialized in folded, but I'm not certain on that one. No idea why Legal Drug was hiatused.

It seems like they might bite off more than they can chew at times, and need to put things on hold so that they can give each project the time and effort it deserves. Before they put Legal Drug on hold, they were putting out three new manga simultaneously (LD, TRC, XXXHolic) and working on character designs for Code Geass. Obviously they should finish things before moving on and starting new projects, but there's pressure from publishing companies, managers, etc. Hopefully they eventually get around to tying up all the loose ends they keep leaving behind.

I've been highly considering Legal Drug as of late (I skimmed through the first volume at a Barnes and Noble one night just to check it out and make sure it wasn't yaoi), and I may buy it in the near-future.

Of course, if Clamp is going to make manga, they need to FINISH WHAT THEY START.

Good point about the publishing companies and managers, etc. But constantly or semi-constantly not finishing a series pisses off their readers...and CLAMP has 3 unfinished ones that I know of. (X/1999, Legal Drug and Clover)

I thought CLAMP pretty much did whatever they wanted to. I wouldn't want to force anyone to continue making a manga they didn't want to continue. It's more of an artist perspective versus a capitalistic one.

If any of the ladies of Clamp comes on here (Provided they can read English), they better read this thread and get the message that they need to finish what they start. Not doing so is mad lazy.

I definitely agree with this, which is why I don't expect to see any work on X or LD or anything else until xxxHolic and Tsubasa are done with, which could be awhile. But I really hope that they do go back to old projects once those series are finished, instead of coming up with something new.

By hiatus they mean that they're never going to finish it. It's been several years. I lost hope of a resolution to the story a while ago. Anime cry

Actually, I have much higher hopes for Legal Drug to be continued someday than I have for X. On a conference that took place in 2006, CLAMP said that it would be resuming in a "near future", and since then they also have given their fans a few small hints that it might continue soon (for example, they've been posting lots of pictures from the series on their private board, and one of the members recently said in a message that she really wanted to draw the Legal Drug characters again). Nothing is confirmed of course, but I personally think that the chances that it will be continued once Tsubasa and xxxHolic are finished (which should be somewhere around the end of this year, considering that CLAMP will start to make their mangettes for Dark Horse in spring 2009) are rather high. As for X, on the other hand, there hasn't been any new information about it for a very long time now. I still hope that it will be continued someday though.
