I have to admit, this episode made me fear for the next two or three episodes. Fans have been shipping Akihiro and Lafter since the first season and now the ship is finally beginning to sail. That in and of itself raises a death flag for either of them, however, the flag is raised higher because Lafter still hasn't confessed to Akihiro. That's romantic tragedy waiting to happen, and this show doesn't have a problem killing off characters the fans love or are beginning to love. Akihiro will probably be saved by Gusion plot armor, but Lafter is piloting a normal MS, and they're going up against Gaelio's new Gundam in the next episode or two. And as we know, Gundams are monsters and should not be fought with normal MS. I fear for laughter and the sinking of this ship.

Plot building! How I missed you, my friend! Very Happy

I dunno about mistrusting Mcgillis, it seems clear that his intention since the beginning was to reform Gjallahorn into something closer to what it was originally meant to be, keeping peace and all that. Now it might be related to family, but even in S1 before we heard anything about the founder, he was already trying to stamp out corruption.

He probably doesn't care much about giving mars to Tekkadan since he know they'll keep the peace (although I think that's not a very smart move).

So Lafter is starting to fall for Akihiro? But I thought all of the members in Naze's group is his wife? I wonder how this will lead too lol

Am I the only one who thought Lafter liking Akihiro had been telegraphed since she started training him way back in season 1?

Maybe the Turbines have an open relationship policy?

Anyway, Lafter is dead to me. They killed her off at the end of season 1, then said "oh, wait, nevermind" for no apparent reason. I'm choosing to stick with the original portrayal and assume she's some kind of vengeful spirit. Plus, I think dying means she's freed from her obligations towards Naze.

Nah they were laying the romance pretty thick between these two, although it's never explained what she sees (you know apart from the muscle) in him and he doesn't seems to be particularly interested in her. So you know, typical anime relationship.

Takaki's choice to leave Tekkadan and focus solely on a peaceful life with Fuka was really the best moment of this entire episode; I'm glad he went through it. In shows with great character building and the possibility of death hanging over just about everyone's head, it's sad to see someone leave the team, but it's often the best choice if it helps them avoid the loss of their life or the lives of others.

The title of the episode is “Vidar Rising,” but not much of it is about Vidar, who we know by now is Gaelio in a mask. The name “Vidar” is almost certainly an homage to Star Wars...
I've been watching the show without subs, and I assumed that the name was "Vidal" based on how they were pronouncing it. Looking at the katakana spellings, a reference to Vader doesn't seem all that obvious to me, with "Vader" being ベイダー (Beidā) and Gaelio's new name being ヴィダール (Vidāru). If there is a Star Wars reference I'd find it more likely that it was added by the subbers, but I guess it isn't inconceivable that the name was originally thought up by passing "Vader" through the cipher of the Gundam Naming Sense. (It could also be a Norse mythology reference, but that way the long a doesn't really make sense, plus the default Japanese spelling is completely different on account of being based on Old Norse rather than English.)

Vidar is 100% named after the Vidar of Norse mythology. Not only is he the Norse God associated with revenge (like IBO's Vidar is claiming as his motivation), but he is also the one that slays Fenrir, the giant wolf. The "Lupus" in Barbatos Lupus is half of the Latin name for Gray Wolf, Canis lupus, and it was named such due to Mikazuki's perceived wolf-like behavior. Mikazuki, as the one that ruthlessly killed so many of Gaelio's friends and comrades, including Carta and Ein, would definitely be one of Gaelio's two biggest targets for revenge, the other of course being McGillis.

KYAHHHHHh!!!!! The vidar is so awesome, being looking forward to seeing it since the gunpla was shown. It's still has the weirdly thin waistline but is otherwise really nice looking.

Otherwise the episode was really nice, good setup for the next arc (something the previous one definitely was lacking) and large cast of character with various motive. McGillis was indeed super creepy at the end there, weird when you hope that a character is merely using his lover rather than actually loving her. I'd guess at the end McGillis will die trying to protect her and it'll be left up in the air whether or not he actually loved her.

I think it's clear he genuinely cares for her and he's probably sincere when he hopes for her happiness. The question is if his fondness for her stems from them both being tools of their families or a genuine romantic interest. It's likely more the former.

Was no one else curious when Vidar mentioned that he was happy to be able to fight "with him"? Well, I watched it on TV so I'm not sure what the subs say, but Vidar said "koitsu to," which could be translated as "with him." spoiler[Is Ein's consciousness in Gundam Vidar???]

Refering to your machine as a partner rather than a tool is very common in mecha series. Though Vidar's comments earlier suggest maybe Ein is part of his Gundam somehow.

Where did "Vidar" get his Gundam? It does seem to be someone who was crossed by our heros.

If Ein is indeed Gundam Vidar, that would be so fucked up and making literally a Gundam.
