Hi, new poster.
Whats the best way to clean a DVD player. Mine seems to be skipping/freezing a lot lately. Its in our bedroom where the wife puts on her makeup. I dusted the other day and there is makeup dust everywhere.
What products out there should I give a try? Would a blast from canned air help any or do I need a lense cleaner of some sort?
Any thing that has work for anyone here would be appreciated.
PS. Not sure if this is the correct board to post this.

The manual way is to open the DVD player, use an air blower to remove all the dust, then clean the lens with alcohol on a cotton swab.
The easier way to do it is to go to an electronic store, buy a DVD cleaner for a couple bucks, and put it in the DVD player.

It wasn't, but I can see the confusion. We don't really have a forum for tehcnical issues that aren't related to Anime News Network, the "Anime" form (where I've moved this post) is the defecto "general" forum.

Thanks for the info. I have heard people say that the cleaning disk did not work very good but I will give one a try. Didn't know if there was a certain brand that works better than others? I will try my canned air too and see if that my help out temporarily. Thanks again.

Don't use the disc, they can also damage the lens.
If the canned air/swab (be VERY careful) doesn't work, then the laser is probably shot

How exactly does the discs work? are they made of a soft material that polishes the lens? I am very weary of them because. like you say, they may scratch the lens. I hope it not shot. I have only had it for a year.

they have a little brush on them that brushes dust and dirt off the lens
1 or the following will happen
1- It fixes your problem
2- It doesn't fix your problem
3- it scratches the lens and makes it worse

Yeah, for some reason my dvd player doesn't want to play my Case Closed dvd. It works on other dvds players though. I probably should clean it but it plays my other dvds perfectly. I use the disc cleaner thing too but I can never find it when I need it .
The disc has a little brush on it and plays classical music while its cleaning.

Be careful popping the top on any player, especially if it's still under warranty. If the disk being played is badly dirty with fingerprints, or scratched, that will cause the player to freeze up because of the corruption of the data read. You can clean a disk with the same liquid that one can get to clean spectical, or camera lenses using a lint free soft cloth.
There are cleaning disks that are based on a thick pad design, not the mini brush design. But either design should not be used dry. There usually is a small bottle of liquid that goes with them. This is isopropol alcohol which is a super dry spirit used for years to clean VTR heads in broadcasting. and has proved to be just as effective for optical syluses. One can buy this seperately from electronic parts supply shops. It's sometimes called "switch cleaning fluid", or just isopropol.

Or get a Sony (or even philips), because mine has been working for 4 years with extensive use. I know cheaper brand like my friend's cheap brand (can't remember) didn't last very long, but it was like 30 buck.
I've treid using the CD cleaner on my cdrw drive, and it work better for about a month and die. So becareful and use it if your dvd/cd drive is failing really bad.

I had this problem a couple times with my playstation 2. I had one of the first ones so it had a couple disk reading problems. I sent it to the ps2 fixing place where they replaced the parts for free. Its been two years since and I just started having those problems but to a lesser extent. I just turned it off blew are using canned air and wiping the playstation clean. Then I used a disk cleaner that you put into the player and now it works fine

Some DVD players, my old one for instance, won't even play the cleaning disc because the disc has to sit just right otherwise it spits it back out or just gives me a "No disc" message, probabally to avoid jamming. This is due to the brush I'm sure and is quite annoying, could be just mine though.

thanks for all the helpful feed back guys!
I have a Sony DVD player and have only had it for a year. We got it as a wedding present. I really think that its got the dust residue that comes from my wife putting on her make up right beside it every single morning. I dust the out side of it and the rag was covered in that flesh colored powder she uses. I think it got inside the DVD player and is covering the lense. I am going to go to Circuit City and see what they got in the way of cleaners.
Again, thanks for all the info.

Just a quick word of advice: If you should happen to go the compressed air can route, whatever you do don't turn the can upside down when you're spraying. All you're going to do is spray super-cold liquid CO2(?) out of the can which will likely crack your lense and damage any electronics it touches, also don't let it touch your skin as it can cause frostbite on contact.

Also note that some DVD players simply can't play certain DVDs, especially ones with a lot of DVD code on them to create fancy menus.
The discs for His and Her Circumstances are notorious for making DVD players run away screaming; my DVD player refuses to play several of them.
