I've yet to see Initial D, since I'd like to watch it after I start(and finish) Fighting Spirit.

That being said, it looks like it'll be fun.

It's different as in, it's not predictable like so many shows now. I've only seen 18 eps of the first season though. I had a ton of friends telling me to watch this growing up, but I never got around to it until ANN started streaming it.

It's pretty good. I work in the automotive industry so it is pretty interesting looking back at what I missed.

If this release is NOT anything like Tokyopop's abomination I just might purchase it.

I don't really see the point in pointing out for the 1000th time that the animation and character design from First Stage were awful. The show came out 12 years ago and its extremely hard to animate that many car scenes in a broadcast-budget show. Its not like Gundam where you can hand-animate because 1. you've got twice the budget and 2. you don't necessarily have to frame the movement of the vehicles with the background in a realistic manner.

Third Stage had excellent animation, though. And the character designs made a much better transfer from the manga. Fourth Stage and Battle Stage also had good animation, when you consider it didn't have the theatrical budget of Third Stage.

Eurobeat, on the other hand, will always be a love or hate thing.

Huh. That's odd. I could've sworn somebody in here dissed Tron, but I think it was just my imagination...

I mean, there *is* this foldout steel chair lying around, and I can't imagine what would happen to whom if this hallucination was reality... Laughing

The tokypop one includes: Original video, optional enhanced video, english 5.1, japanese stereo, full subs, sign only subs and came with bumper stickers. What exactly makes that an abomination compared to this one?

Right Stuf sells the entire first stage from Tokypop for like $15 and it's still instock meanwhile this one is like $23 for half a season. Can anyone who has seen both releases tell me what makes this one worth 3x the price of the 2007 Tokypop release? Just looking at the specs it seems like this new one is lacking in features and bonuses.

I agree. Unless you want to hear a good dub (because the Tokyopop one really is awful), the Tokyopop release really is a better option.

It's the dub that most people hate from the TP release.

Supposedly it's awful, plus they "tricked out" the dub by changing the music and putting in weird edits like flashing images in reverse then back again to "snazz it up."

The sub, however, is fine, which is why I just bought the TP release.

If you are going to watch any of the show dubbed, you want the Funimation release. It is worth the extra cost. In the TokyoPop version, the dub is bad, they changed all the music and put in wierd special effects. If you are going to watch it subbed only, then the TokyoPop version is OK.

I should note, in the TokyoPop version, the first episode of the second season is in the first season set and is not in the second season set.

DJ Milky's "Music" or whatever those sounds he produced.

I think you have to understand that the edits made to Initial D were made at the time the Import Scene exploded thanks to The Fast and the Furious. TOKYOPOP was also releasing their line of Street Fury DVD's as well (which was god-awful compared to Best Motoring or other Japanese DVD Magazines). Y'know, trying to appeal to a wider audience?

Unfortunately for TOKYOPOP and DJ Milky, they sorta miscalculated the fact that people were slowly going for genuine JDM as trends and flavors changed. And changing the iconic Eurobeat soundtrack didn't win them any favors as well.

And seriously criticizing the Animation, this is a very old show. You cannot seriously be telling me that just because something gets old you immediately downgrade it because of the artwork? That's just ridiculous.

I've yet to experience any dub of Initial D that is worth my time...

I have the Tokyo Pop Stage 1 & 2 volumes and Funimation's Stage 3 and Stage 4 sets and the difference between them doesn't matter, they are both subpar for the course and not as good as the original Japanese voice actors.

Watching Initial D dubbed is taboo! Wink

I enjoyed the new dub, particularly having the original music instead of that god-awful mix on the Tokyopop release. However, I will keep my TP sets since the Japanese audio is in 5.1 while this new release is sadly only stereo. Seriously, does Funi always give the Japanese track short shrift? I swear that even when both have just a stereo track, the Japanese side always sounds almost muffled.

Ah , no duh. Funi's version is way superior than Tokyopop's mess. and if you though their version of Initial D was bad , after their dub of Rave Master, they were starting to get as bad as any of the mess 4kids and Nelvana did.

The only dubs they did perfectely were Samuari Bout High School & GTO : Great Teacher Onizuka , but now you know why they are sticking only to manga distrubtions , which is better for everyone.

But there are also times when the English is genuinely superior to the Japanese.

That i agree 100% ,and probably other people too since having a dub that's worthy for the series and not 's messTokyopop had the license.

Then again , people said the same thing and starting appreciating Funi's dub of One Piece after it rescued from the hands of 4crap kids.

So why the B- grade? Compared to that mess, Funi's version is a blessing.

MY Grade :

Sub: B+
Dub: A-
