I realize that this post could have gone in anime too, but I decided to put it might fit better here.
Manga makes more money than anime(?)
When distributor Geneon went kaboom recently (in so many words), people here have been speculating whether or not the general US anime market is doing very well at all.
On the other side, it seems to me that the US manga industry is thriving(?) in comparison. I hear about titles such as Fruits Basket and Naruto selling very very well. Also, I see many new publishers coming in to get a peace of the pie. I notice the manga section in major bookstores are always crowded. Overall, I'm seeing something that seems to be making money.
So, if this is true, why is it? Anime and Manga are closely related, so why would one be doing well and not the other (pricing? selection? demographic? Piracy?). Please post your thoughts on this Thanks!
Also, before you go on, I will apologize for a few things:
- Sorry if a thread like this already exists
- I know a lot of this is conjecture. But I feel like it is worth discussion. If you feel strongly that the conjecture is wrong, please please post.
- Don't flame me too hard >< heheh

my opinion has always been that there is more story in a manga volume for (sometimes less than) half the price of a DVD.

I think the price per volume might be a reason manga is perhaps outperforming anime of late. I know that I spend my money on manga first, anime second because I get more for my money with manga.
Also it seems like manga, along with graphic novels in general, is getting a lot more attention lately than anime.
Of course, the manga industry has had its downturns. Just ask ADV (admittedly, they brought that on themselves).

Same here. Also, don't forget that most people prefer to download their anime rather than manga, making them less likely to buy DVDs over a book.

I think it's because you get more for your money. You get more story (for the most part, there are always exceptions), more of your favorite characters, a more "authentic" version of events (when I say this I mean if the manga was created first, it is the storyteller's actual vision as opposed to any filler arcs/changes anime producers make, this is debatable though). Dropping $10 on a book for me is easier than dropping $20+ on a DVD that will provide me around the same amount of time of entertainment.
And then of course I think there is more shelf room out there for manga as opposed to anime. Manga is in almost every single major bookstore these days and depending on your location, has many shelves available. I've even seen manga at Wal-Mart now. Meanwhile, anime is in many entertainment stores but I've never seen a huge selection of anime in any one place, with the exception of Media Play (which went Bankrupt and is gone now). On average I would say there is at least 5 different manga series for every 1 anime series you see on a shelf in their respective major retailers.
My manga collection is 100x bigger than my anime collection because I simply love to read. I've loved reading as a kid and I'll never grow out of it, where as my anime phases are spotty throughout the years.

I would imagine that one of the largest reasons is the production costs are much, much, much less than putting out an anime.

I've noticed that myself. While anime in mainstream stores has been growing for the last few years, it still doesn't seem to have grown to the same extent that manga has.
As for production costs, I honestly don't know how much of a difference it would be. Logically though, I do agree that anime probably does cost more, probably mainly because of having to pay English VAs. But I would think that the higher price point on a DVD should offset the production difference.

Don't forget either that manga is easier to take with you then a dvd. Unless you wanna drop hundreds on a laptop or portable dvd players you can't just watch anime between classes now can you? Manga is also more accessible to younger kids. Parents are more willing to spend money on something that requires the child to read. Just my opinion on that at least.
Plus I think the anime dvd market is also just struggling on it's own while the manga market is keeping on at a steady pace it seems.

Anime popularity still outweight manga almost 6:1.
Look at all the anime-focus convention and compare that to manga. Anime related site vs manga related site on the web. Anime is just more popular and would probably make more money. It takes about 3 manga sold to equal to one volume of anime being sold.
While manga is doing well lately, it's not doing extremely well like years before. Actually I think only a few big name title are doing extremely well like Naruto.

I find it odd so many claim manga lasts as long as say, a dvd. It seems more of a reading pace thing; if a volume of manga lasted me an hour and a half, I might be more tempted to buy it. Since a volume only lasts me 12-17 minutes, I've never really found it to be cost effective, especially in comparison to box-sets.

Indeed, a volume of manga will take about 15 minutes to read while an anime takes around 20-25 minutes an episode, thats more than double the 'time being entertained' and thus timewise anime is better value than manga.

Ah I beg to differ, it depends on the book. There's some I've read in under 10 minutes, and others that have taken me 45 minutes to an hour and a half to read depending on how wordy it is.

Well, if you are judging it by how much time it takes, then manga may not be as good a value. But if you judging it by how much of the story it covers in comparison to the anime, or how much it costs to read the whole story in comparison to watching it, manga may come out on top. 20.5 volumes of the Bleach manga cover what the anime will take 16 volumes. But those anime volumes are three times the price, making the manga a far better value.

Maybe you just read wordier manga than I, but the longest I've spent on a single volume is probably around 20 minutes for the last volume of Saikano.
