Which composer would you like to see do a anime soundtrack? For an existing anime, at least. Think of the possibalities:
John Williams for Evangelion
Danny Elfman for Boogiepop Phantom
Howard Shore for .hack//
James Horner for Kenshin...
Any other ideas?

Well, hmmm..... These men aren't technically composers, but they are brilliant writers of instrumental pieces. So, perhaps their work would fit in on a less grand scale then John Williams (whose talent, personally speaking, I'd think to be better used on a Gundam series, so that the scale of grandeur is equal on both sides).
For the Tenchi Muyo OAV, I'd have Phil Keaggy (the man that Jimi Hendrix himself said was the world's greatest left-handed guitarist) doing the music. His work is very lyrical, even when he uses electrics instead of acoustics, and is usually tied in with flutes, harps, moderate bass, some brass, and very light percussion. Just his pieces "Follow Me Up" and "Agora" from his album "The Master and the Musician" would make for moving scenes.
For Wolf's Rain (I know, major travesty being committed in saying that a Yoko Kanno soundtrack can be replaced) I'd want the late Michael Hedges, another guitarist virtuoso, to write. In particular there's his song "Torched" from his album of the same name which would be fairly appropriate. Also from that album is the instrumental "Fusion of the Fire Elements", which is perfect for moments involving the elusive and enchanting Cheza. Finally, just as general music, there's the piece "Because It's There" from the album "Live on the Double Planet". It's haunting, sweet, and laced with desperation and struggle. Wonderful for the series, and doubly fitting as Hedges wrote it as a tribute to explorers and adventurers everywhere...
...but most of all to the contestants of the Iditarod.
Finally, William Ackerman. While my pleas to make his album "Passage" mandatory listening in school music programs everywhere have been mostly unheard (the man founded Windham Hill records and is considered one of the world's most influential musicians, yet cannot write or read a single note), I still say that he could compose beautifully touching music for a breathtaking fantasy anime that would touch the souls of children and adults alike. You know, something by Studio Ghibli.

I'd love to see John Adams work on some epic anime mech series. It'd be POWERFUL!
Thomas Bergensen would be perfect for something along the lines of Wolf's Rain...

I'd get Hans Zimmer, who along with Howard Shore has shown amazing versatility collaborating with other performers on films like "Gladiator" and "Lord of the Rings". They could really bring Berserk to life. Maybe even X.

I've always thought that Tom Waits could do some songs for Cowboy Bebop.

Had they been alive, I would've loved to have Copland spin out some tunes for Wolf's Rain, and Gerswhin do some stuff for Hellsing or something.

I feel like an idiot for being unable to recall their names(my brain is too full of atmospheric physics), but I'm gonna say Metallica, Sepultura, etc. could give some more intensity for some action shows, particularly DBZ. I wouldn't want them to do something for Kenshin or Eva, but since DBZ is straight-up action, I think a dose of straight-up metal would be that much more interesting.

DBZ'd need a severe bump up in direction, cinematography, production values, animation quality, and writing before they'd be worthy of Metallica's attention.
Anyway, most of my favourite composers already do anime: Taku Iwasaki, Yoko Kanno, Yuki Kajiura, etc. But it would be nice to see the likes of Hans Zimmer, Howard Shore, or John Williams do some grand-scale project. Hell, it's entirely possible one of them might land the live-action Evangelion's scoring duties.
