The synopsis sounds good until you realize.....
There are cars that a non-race car driver can buy today that are faster than 500 km/h if you have a few million dollars. This should've aired 15-20 years ago, the synopsis needed to be reworked as safe cars at 500 km/h are in the luxury market (it's written like it was around 2002), or increased the minimum speed to at least 750-800 km/h to make it seem more futuristic.

Fastest race cars today are F1 cars. Top speed for F1 cars is around 350 km/h. I think a couple years ago the top speed caught on any track for F1 was ~360 km/h (at Monza I believe, in a Ferrari). Needless to say, 500 is already a lot more than 360, especially what is billed as "near future." The theoretical fastest real car is the Koenigsegg Jesko Absolut, with a top speed of ~531 km/h, but the only model in existence came out a month or two ago, and it hasn't actually hit that in an official, recorded, test. The fastest "production" car is the Buggati Chiron Super Sport+, which under an orchestrated test topped out at ~489 km/h. This was not in race conditions and was in effect only just a drag race under ideal conditions (not at all the kind of racing suggested in this anime).

Agreed, but what gets me is F has not been pushing for more speed, but more efficiency. Formula racing going electric and green but what seems silly is sheer size of track needed to go this fast. And on top of that, would simply being hard to watch and enjoy at those speeds. Look how far back one needs to enjoy air shows. Racing not about speed as much as about skill to take position.
In younger days back in late 60s/early 70s I did a lot of motor sports. Speed good to keep lead, but works against in corners.Top speed is great in drag racing, no so much on course at certain point.Things happen fast at 300kph, At 500 kph, unless brain augmented, human reflexed wont respond to keep up with speed.

If I could handle early Initial D's CGI, chances are good I could handle whatever this show has in store, atrocious or no.
