First off, a big HELLO to everyone on here I actually, to be honest, had no idea this site existed until a very very short while ago...it's quite the helpful little place. However there's a few questions i still have...
but before all that, let me first outline that im very new to the whole anime scene; never been to a convention (they look to be fun though, im gonna hit a few this year/next! ) or really seen that many shows. A few days ago, i was messing around on my Guild forum for Guild Wars, and someone mentioned this "bloody good gore fest" called Elfen Lied. I figure that sounds like something i'd be into. So i grab up the 13 episode show, and to my surprise, it's actually amazing; it blew me away, with a story that rivals many of the books i have read even. This in itself provoked me to try a few more series. I started to watch Evangelion (bought plat. box) last night, im around episode 13 now...very interesting, i have to say i haven't had a bad experience with anime yet Right after Elfen Lied i watched some Full Metal Alchemist on Adult Swim...it was a day off, so after deciding FMA looked good, i (admittedly, couldnt find a boxset) downloaded the entire series. I'm currently at episode 45, and this show's damn good as well. Among others though, of all mentioned so far, my favorite watch is currently Full Metal Panic! The Second Raid; hard about that on Guildportal too, very fun show. I love the characters so much!
but the crowned jewel of shows i have watched recently would have to be this (seems very recent) comedy series called The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. Bloody Brilliant show really, it seems to be (im on episode 4) leading up to a somewhat interesting plotline, Haruhi is just plain hilarious, all the characters really have their strong points. Honestly though i cant find out why for the life of my i find the show so damn funny...it just is. Like, it's not the same as stuff like family guy, that spoofs on politics and just everything else, it is just funny to watch some of the stuff the characters go through i guess...
however the show left me at a few glaring questions...
1) is the shy girl (cant spell name) one of the "aliens" like nagato and Haruhi? i saw a few things that could have hinted it, but im not so sure...
2) what was that flash in episode three of the monster looking thing, when they were going to lose and envoke the wrath of haruhi?
3) does nagato ever say anything?
and lastly, are there any other animes similar to this one?
thanks for the help guys, and hi again!

Welcome to ANN! Though I'm not getting the location part You seem to like action and VIOLENCE, so I will suggest that you watch Berserk too, cause the blood flows like waterfalls. Just as long as you don't do anything dumb, you'll be quite alright at this here forums. Enjoy!

Welcome to the site some solid advice on how to use this site.
First off make good use of the reviews. They are solid this will give you a few things to work from. It will define how the shows you have watched are categorized, and it will give you some decent insight into what you may like, and what you will not. Also it can tell you if series you like have spinoffs.
Second use the encyclopedia to gather information on series you may want to potentially watch. You can find user reviews in the form of a table, and release dates. You can then use the release dates. Click on them and you will see the item, and you will get a list of retailers, and the price they are selling the product at.
Third you can use the list of retailers to find the best price. Make it a point to aquaint yourself with the retailers listed. Each has different policies in reguards to things like shipping. For instance if you decide to use DVD empire, because it has what you want at the cheapest be mindful you need to buy three products to get their super saver.
In a nutshell this site gives you alot of good tools to use when shopping for anime. Also you may want to look into joining a internet mail renter like net flix. A good way to see anime at a marginal price. After all there are some series, and movies that are only worth a one time viewing.
I cannot recommend anything similar to melancholy since I have yet to see it myself so no grounds for comparisson. What I can recommend is Gantz is very similar to elfen lied on the graphic depiction of violence. Well in my oppinion it leaves Elfen in the dust. Maybe you will be one up on your friends this time around. You may even find the plot, philosiphy, and characters to your likeing. Anyway both it and Elfen Lied are very similar in many respects.
When it comes to EVA a classic try RahXephon. These series are also very similar in that they have the same dynamic. Both series have a main character followed by an ensemble. Both have a key mystery element that only unravels with time. Both involve giant fighting robots. In my oppinion RahXephon seems more real then EVA.
Anyway welcome to anime. You have only scratched the edge of the iceberg.

Tanks for all of the speedy replies guys!
and RahXephon sounds like fun, looking at a few rivews on it and such on the ADV site as i type; seems like a better animated evangelion
Gantz, i thought about trying, however
1) i wanted to wait till both box sets came out for both seasons
2) it has very mixed reviews; it goes from philosophical intruiging adventure, to pointless but fun violent bloodfiesta.
feh i might give it a go at some point in time...
anyone know what Azumanga Daioh is like? there's a screen of a cat eating some girls hand in my friends MYspace, and i asked him what that was from he said AzuDai, the best anime ever. So i wanna know...what it is?
and why that cat eats hands...?

Azumanga Daioh is a great slice of life high school anime about a group of girls who just.. go through high school. It doesn't have any supernatural entities, mechs, or fighting of any sort, no overarcing plot (each episode is even broken down into smaller 'episodelets'), and no drama. But it's one of the best comedy animes ever made, in my opinion. It's really funny, and I recommend checking it out. It's not really like Haruhi, except for the fact that it's also a comedy that takes place in high school, but I would say it is easily as funny: just in a differant, simpler way.
And the cat doesn't eat hands, but it is ill-tempered and prone to biting.

Welcome, I'm glad that your experiences with anime have all been positive for the most part. It's funny that someone should mention Azumanga Daioh after talking about the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. When I first heard about that show from an anime club buddy of mine, he described it as a more grown up version of Azumanga, but just as wacky if not more so. It's getting alot of amazing hype (that's good) and was ranked #5 on ANN ratings of top anime of all time. I think that is unprecedented for such a new series that hasn't been picked up yet by a N.A. distributor.

haha, sounds like fun...have to check it out...ADV site seems to have a box, and i just got paid
however it's nice to hear that Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is getting all that attention; it really does deserve it, and unfourtanetly alot of shows that deserve that kind of popularity dont really get it. Which is partially the caue we wind up with a thousand shows about mecha sex combat waitresses from the future...
