I've always wondered, how is traditional Japanese music treated in Japan?
over here in Europe we have all heard classical European music from Bach to Tchaikovsky and you often hear music using European instruments such as the piano, the violin etc in Anime(usually during emotional scenes or during 'heavy' scenes)
but I cant say I have noticed traditional Japanese instruments or songs turning up, I cant say I've been able to make out a Samisen or Taiko drumming so why?
dont the Japanese like their own music? Do they prefer ours? Have I just not seen series with it in?

Oi
Well Japanese tend to be split between this Many of the younger generation tend to like popular music including western and jpop jrock ect.
The elderly tend to like enka and traditional music geners such as Gagaku or Koto shamisen.
But now these days culture intergration education and history have envolved teaching classical traditional music to the younger generation
Lots schools in Japan today have a Taiko group or club
Depending on who you ask people tend to laike different things
you can have people who like both or just one kind of music but both generations do mix

Like it's been said before, people have different musical taste. Plus, when people get older tend to like more mellow music, where people who are younger like music with more beat for youth.
And you really shouldn't consider the "Classic" genre of music the traditional music of the west. Each "western" culture has their own traditional sound, just like the Japanese have theres. Classical music is a style of music, not an Ethnic group, and there are plenty of modern Classical composers in Japan.
As to the lack of traditional Japanese instruments in anime, they're there. They're just usually in period peices. Example: InuYasha. Pop music of Japan sometimes use them too, try listening to some of the Japanese DDR songs next time you play it.
Why don't they use these instruments as often? Well, soundtracks are usually composed of orcestra instruments, which don't really stand out and distract viewers. The Japanese drums could fit into the orcestra setting no problem, and for all we no they are, (it's just hard to determin from sound if they are or aren't) however, other traditional Japanese instruments, such as the Samisen don't blend in with an orcestra as easily. The Samisen's sound stands out, doesn't work well in groups, and can best be compared to the sound of the 'traditional' American banjo. I don't hear a lot of banjos in my music, and I don't particularly like the sound.
Also, since they are traditional instruments, I'm assuming it's more than likely frowned upon to play them outside of the traditional way. You don't often see people plucking at cello strings to try and get a guitar sound.

Hi Its me Tokaido again
ok last post I posted here was way off topic lol
As for traditional Japanese music in Anime
It depends on the anime
A lot of Anime have traditional intstruments mixed in with modern music
To find it you just have to listen carefully
Some examples are found in Sen to Chihiro ( Spirrited Away) and Mononoke Hime( Princess Mononoke)
Taiko and other traditional instruments are found in the soundtracks.
Innuyasha, Kenshin, Samurai Champloo, Peacemaker Kuragone also have traditional instruments in there soundtracks
Sometimes the instrument is struck with for a comedic effect you're under arrest has a lot of that it makes it realy funny too.
Hope tis helps

There is a (TV?) movie called Nitaboh which is all about a boy who grows up learning to play the shamisen
