in episode 2 of NGE, while the angel is squeezing the evas arm, shinji seems to feel thbe pain. but when the evas arm snaps, shinjis arm doesn't break.

Im pretty sure that only the nerve's are connected, Shinji feels everything that happens to the eva but it doesn't happen to him. I could be wrong though, it's been a while since i watched NGE. |

Efan is correct. Having your nervous system linked into your 'mech has definite advantages, but that's one of the bad side effects.

Do you remember all the times where they talk about sync ratios or when Misato says stuff like "it's okay Shinji, nothing is happening, you're fine!". This is because the neurological connecters that NERV uses to link the pilot to the EVA are just so the pilot can synchronize with the EVA. It's a way of getting the piltos to be able to pilot the EVA without hitting twenty million buttons. Which is why they feel pain but don't totally get hurt.

So now I have a TOTALLY serious question: If Shinji faced a moster that kicked him in the groin hard enough, would Shinji lose the ability to bear children  ? I'm laughing but I'm serious.

Nope. I believe that Shinji would feel the pain but would still be able to bear children, but his "thing" might be deformed
. Wait! What am I saying? Shinji getting it on with a girl?! Don't think so.

But Shinji getting it on with Kaworu? Ahh, that's the stuff doujinshi is made of. Nothing physically would happen to Shinji. He'd hurt like a mother, but he would still have his bits intact. Really. Unless the angel went INTO the Eva and attacked Shinji's actual body. |

I was in total agreement with the rest of you untill I saw the End of Eva movie. I recall that:spoiler[as unit 2 is in it's death throes, Asuka grasps at the air in an act of desperate defiance. As the white evas slice Unit 2's arm in half, Asuka's arm also appears to be split apart.] Thought I'd err on the side of caution with the spoiler tag, but, did anyone else catch this?

Oh Lordy. See what I started? I don't understand the hatred of characters like Shinji. Anyway, I ask questions like this all the time (Entitled "Questions to make you THINK") but I never post them up because I don't know how some people would react. But I'll try to expand on what I mean here . . . Let's say that the groin kick causes a malfunction in the pain threshold dampener (WTH?) within the Eva. It blows up, causing a chain reaction and feeding a power surge of sudden pain into Shinji's genital region. I remember hearing an extreme incident where a person had a car accident in which the sudden rush of pain caused their testicles to rupture. Could the nerve integration cause Shinji's testicles to burst like a party ballon in a similar fashion? |

Frank, I don't really know if you wanted to make me laugh, but you did. In case you didn't, I guess the Ikari family jewels are toast. No doubt this will cause much consternation for Rei, Asuka, Misato, and in a psychological sense, Yui Ikari.
I also don't share the widespread disdain of Shinji. Other than the fact that spoiler[he may or may not have turned me into Tang], I cannot blame a 14 year old with that kind of fabulous family background for behaving that way. Those that disagree have simply never been summoned from tranquil obscurity by their estranged father to immediately pilot a huge bio-mechanical weapon sans the benefit of a copy of An Idiot's Guide To Eva Synchronization. |

I'm laughing too hard at the last two posts to think straight..
But I'll reinforce the point that someone else made. There are times in the series (and the movie) that we see actual physical effects occuring for the pilot of the Eva (Like when Shinji gets his arm twisted, we see it twist, also Asuka's bleeding eye in the movie). |

I think this was addressed "somewhere" 
[EVA 01 falls down] Misato: "Damage report!" "Sensors indicate serious trauma to the groin area." Misato: "That's gotta hurt." ----------------- [Scene: Hospital Room] Shinji: "What happened?" Misato: "I'm sorry, Shinji, they had to remove your nuts." Shinji: "WHaat?!?" |

In addition, her left eye was wounded as well in End of Eva. You can clearly see this at the in the closing scene where both her arm and eye are bandaged. |
