More specifically, they are crests. Like the family crests used on clothing and battle flags by armies in the Warring States period.

Not sure if they're real ones or original designs, though. I remember looking for some of them in the appendix to Eiji Yoshikawa's Taiko at one point, but I don't recall identifying any.
