Quote: | ADV does bear a lot of responsibility for the anime market saturation. They have licensed a ton of titles. However, I'm sure they paid an arm and a leg for those titles, even the sub-par ones. Anime is way to expensive for us fans to buy everything that comes down the pipe. I reserve my anime cash (and I do spend a ton on anime and manga titles over the course of a year) for the good stuff. FUNimation titles get priority because they are going to give me MY subtitles -- full use of Japanese honorifics and in some cases (like Yu Yu Hakusho), fun Japanese terms...like youkai. ADV might use the occassional "-chan" in an Azumanga Daioh, but I cringed everytime I was forced to read "Miss" in the subtitles. |
!! HA. I seriously can't believe people would complain over something so small. Yes, changes can be irratating, but right there it just sounds like you're digging for something to complain about. I don't mean to flame, but that's ridiculous.
A friend of mine gave me a link to the topic, and he had this to say:
"STFU AND MOVE TO JAPAN."
No offence, but that had it coming.
ADV's work is mediocre to me, but I prefer them 10x more then Funi...

First, hello, I'm mechaAce. I'm new here, be gentle, okay?
I honestly don't care about whether or not they keep the honorifics. It's redundant and sometimes inappropriate anyway. I'm more concerned about the material remaining as close to the Japanese original as possible. No editting, no overlays, no cut scenes. Do that for me, and I will give you my first born. Hell, I'll offer up prayers and sacrifices.
In this department, everyone does a decent job. ADV had some moments where my confidence was shaken, but they've made amends and we're a happy family again. But people like FUNimation, who change names and titles for no apparent reason just aggravates me to no end. I'd much rather whine and moan over the fact that CMX altered Tenjo Tenge to death to make more money off it, then over the fact that ADV omitted honorifics from Chrno Crusade or Azumanga Daioh.
I'm sorry for the staff that were laid off, but I think this is a good move for ADV. As others have already said, the market is at a peak and the publishers are going to have to cut back and concentrate on fewer releases in order to sustain it for the time being while they figure out how to encourage more growth.
In closing, support the industry. Buy manga. Buy anime. Buy the soundtracks. Watch it on TV. Hell, demand the Anime Network. I know some of you Marxists out there refuse to do so, but it's in everyone's best interest. The more people suppliers, retailers, sponsors, and distributors know are buying and demanding the product the more money they will be willing to invest in it. This encourages growth. This is a good thing.
If you like something or dislike something, tell the publishers and producers. If enough people write in, they'll listen. The idea is to sell more of their products. If the quality isn't the problem, and they know why, they'll improve it. It's in everyone's best interest.
And support anime on TV. I mean it. This is what will really get the market booming again. I know there are many extreme, militant, and elitist otaku out there that will think I'm a blasphemer for saying this. However anime needs exposure if it's going to grow, and that price point won't come down as long as anime makes up only 2% of the DVD market. Watch Adult Swim. Watch G4TechTV when Anime Unleashed is on. It is the ONLY thing worth watching on that channel anymore. Tell your friends to watch. And for the love of all that is holy, ask your cable company to pick up the Anime Network. Give it a chance, people. It isn't going to hurt to try and if it is successful, it will be good for everyone.
That's my opinion and I'm sticking to it.

You realize that the voice actors are not ADV employees. They're freelancers. They take jobs wherever they can get them (radio, stage, local TV). If FUNi asks them to come work in Ft. Worth, they'll go if the pay's worth it.
ADV can't and doesn't dictate to them where they can and can't work, esp. in Texas (right-to-work).
Plus, it's business. Fairness doesn't even enter in this game.

It makes sense that they use the same talent, since they operate in the same area and they have some kind of partnership going on as well.

Oh? I've been under the impression that at least some voice actors, especially for a company like ADV that has its own dubbing studios, are staff, not freelancers. And as far as Texas being a right-to-work state, wouldn't a no-compete clause in a voice actor's contract make that irrelevant?

Actually, it's because the work doesn't fall under union that they don't have to worry about competeing clauses. Think about it... Vic Mignogna is a perfect example - he voices Kurz Weber for Full Metal Panic (and upcoming fumoffu) , but he's also doing Ed from Full Metal Alchemist - a Funi product.
Monica Rial is even better - Kiddy Grade(Funi), Azumanga Daioh(ADV), Spiral (Funi), Elfen Lied (ADV).
It's a matter of going where the work is - and not limiting oneself to just one series at a time - since there may be several weeks between dubbing sessions for each actor.
