Holy crap, I just threw up in my mouth. Not that I cared about these titles before, but the art is just.. wow. I'm glad they gave somebody one of those "How to draw manga style!! Durrherr!" books (and don't even get me started on some of those) and told them to have at it. This reeks of lame marketing committee.

Is the Sabrina "manga" worth the $2.50-$3 price? I'm thinking of buying an issue, but don't wish to waste my money.

The only time that Archie Comics used the manga style and it worked was with the Sonic the Hedgehog comics, which have gotten better since #130. Of course, Spaz introduced the anime style for that comic years before the anime fad began.
You're sister has a right to her own opinion. Not everyone will love what everyone else does. People say Evangelion (or used to) was the greastest anime ever, and I found it to be basically crap. |

I don't think that picture is really indicative of what the actual books are going to look like. Newsarama has some actual page samples here.

I completly agree with you 100%. I've been collecting the Sonic The Hedgehog comics for over a decade now, and I haven't stopped doing it either. Some of the issues are kinda sub standard (like when they go a bit over board with the "manga" style), and have overly exxaggerated stylings. But some of the issues really really shine (I love J. Axer and Ken Penders styles (though Ken is a bit more leaning towards american styles)), with quality and thought. It's the only "manga" style thing that any of the major american companies have produced that I like. And Spaz is freaking amazing. =P |

Whew, ok, that sample art of the interior pages looks a lot better. There are still strange proportion issues but the characters look so much better than in that first color pinup. The character designs are completely different. They shouldn't be using that color art anywhere! ![]() |

you are so right MS! The inside looks better. I think it would be cool actually if they left the words out. So what's next? Archie and Jughead Yaoi? |

Okay, those interior pictures are way better. I like how every single picture is a bunch of big dumb grins. It makes me want to open my mouth gaping wide

If Archie Comics really want to be an outstanding company, they shouldn't publish crap. Not all anime/manga art is appealing as to standard American cartoon art. However, if it's artistically presented well, (This includes understanding the human body and gestures, a thorough story, and appealing characters that do grow stronger or weaker as a result of conflict.) then it's probably worth reading and buying. I don't think they fully understand what people want. To be frank, it's just like writing a novel only in comic book form. How hard is that?

Eh? Have you even watched avatar? Four episodes in and it's already all around better than most of the disposable anime shown on Japanese TV today. Anime is getting extremely lazy as of late, they're trying too hard at stretching they're budgets to cover extended mediocre episodes when they should be sticking to well played, but shorter episode counts. Anyone watch Moon Phase 12? It's almost unwatchable due to the number and extent of still frames. Ok, end of that rant, just had to get that off my chest. Anyway, Like other's have said, Sebrina is actually pretty well drawn, not that I've actually read it, I've only fliped through it at Walmart when picking up Shonen Jump. Let's hope that this preview (it's not a cover, just a preview) was just something they threw together to quickly get the word out. Emerje (Edit: Lots of post since I started writing this, the inside pages preview look much better, but let's just hope they stay that good in the actual comic) |

I don't have much of a problem with America using manga-style art; after all, the style was itself was originally heavily influenced by Walt Disney's style (Tezuka being having been a huge Disney fanboy and all) and it's not like the two countries haven't influenced each other dozens of times over the years. But if you're gonna do it, it should be for an artistic reason, not as a cheap marketing gimmick (and try hiring an artist whose work DOESN'T look like it just stepped out of the so-so pile over at Deviantart.) Teen Titans and Avatar are good examples of anime-style shows done well-they both do something unique with the style and aren't just copycats. And of course, Sonic works best in manga style because he's a Japanese character to begin with. Glad Archie recognizes that these days-anyone remember the godawful DIC style that comic book started out with?
Actually, if you think about it, Archie is the prototype for every harem anime ever. Here's a somewhat dorky good-natured high school kid who is inexplicably always being fought over by two girls who are completly devoted to him for reasons never fully explained. From what I remember of reading Archie as a kid, the stories often featured the kind of wacky romantic misunderstandings that are par for the course on shows like Da Capo and Love Hina. All Archie needs is a cute mongoose or something running around and maybe for Betty to put on a maid outfit, and it could be a manga. |
