Compared to the other first rounds, this group seems a tad dull. There was only one unfortunate first round match up in this group.
Group D-1 Magical Girl Squad, Tweeny Witches vs. Dragons of Heaven, X franchise Magic Girl Squad Group D-2 Wolf Pack, Wolf’s Rain vs. Children of Béfort, Fantastic Children Children of Befort I expect some strong arguments for this team in the future. Group D-3 Warriors of Seiryuu, Fushigi Yuugi vs. Ham-Hams, Hamtaro Warriors of Seiryuu. Group D-4 Macross Bridge Crew, Super Dimension Fortress Macross vs. Imperial Combat Troop – Flower Division, Sakura Wars franchise Macross Bridge Crew. Group D-5 Phantom Troupe, Hunter x Hunter vs. Kaleido Stage Crew , Kaleido Star Kaleido Stage Crew. Group D-6 Science Ninja Team Gatchaman, Gatchaman vs. Space/Time Administration Bureau, Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha A’s Space/Time Administration Bureau. Group D-7 Shuffle Alliance, G-Gundam vs. Celestial Being, Gundam 00 Celestial Being. Group D-8 Aswad, My-Otome vs. Order of Magdalene, Chrono Crusade Order of Magdalene Group D-9 Suzaku Seven Fushigi Yuugi vs. Debris Section, Planetes Debris Section. Group D-10 Chor Tempest, Simoun vs. Evening Primrose, Darker Than BLACK Evening Primrose. Group D-11 Shitennō, Otogi Zoshi vs. Mu, Toward The Terra Mu. Group D-12 Bronze Saints, Saint Seiya vs. Kisaragi Girls High School Baseball Team, Princess Nine Bronze Saints. Group D-13 Dai-Gurren Brigade, Gurren Lagann vs. Basroil Bridge Crew, Banner of the Stars I/II Barsoil Bridge Crew. Two strong teams, A strong vote against my bracket, but I believe that the other team will win based on accomplishments and grandness of team chemistry, but they are definitely not without their merits either. Both teams have a very different approach to teamwork, and I happen to prefer the latter team a tad more in this area. Group D-14 Social Welfare Agency, Gunslinger Girl vs. Attacked Mystification Police, Silent Möbius Attacked Mystification Police Their opponent is a collection of strong pairs and not a strong team. Group D-15 Dead Girls Red Garden vs. Juppongatana, Ruroni Kenshin Juppongatana Group D-16 Millenion, Gungrave vs. Terrestrial Administration Center (aka TAC), Blue Seed TAC Previous comments. |

Am I just in time?
Group D-1 Dragons of Heaven, X franchise - It's CLAMP Group D-2 Wolf Pack, Wolf’s Rain - the contender is a good team too but that show had me scratching my head too much, and wondering exactly what was being sought after sometimes. Group D-3 Warriors of Seiryuu, Fushigi Yuugi - They fight amongst each other like the "bad guys" typically do but they have their merits and are definitely motivated towards helping Nakago acheive his goals. Group D-4 Imperial Combat Troop – Flower Division, Sakura Wars franchise - this is a tough one for me but "Bridge Crew" seems kind of a vague designation for a team. Group D-5 Phantom Troupe, Hunter x Hunter - another bad guy team that I'm rooting for because of their strong goals and group cohesion. Group D-6 Science Ninja Team Gatchaman, Gatchaman - Oh Yeah! Group D-7 Shuffle Alliance, G-Gundam - Might as well be a coinflip, not a Gundam fan. Group D-8 Order of Magdalene, Chrono Crusade Group D-9 Suzaku Seven Fushigi Yuugi - no brainer. Group D-10 Evening Primrose, Darker Than BLACK - ??? Group D-11 Mu, Toward The Terra - saw it. Group D-12 Bronze Saints, Saint Seiya Group D-13 Dai-Gurren Brigade, Gurren Lagann Group D-14 Attacked Mystification Police, Silent Möbius - they are a pretty good team. Group D-15 Juppongatana, Ruroni Kenshin Group D-16 Terrestrial Administration Center (aka TAC), Blue Seed |

Last minute votes. Hopefully, this won't be a habit.
Group D-1 Magical Girl Squad, Tweeny Witches vs. Dragons of Heaven, X franchise Voting for: Tweeny Witches Why: Wasn't impressed by the lukewarm teamwork presented by the Dragons in X. Group D-2 Wolf Pack, Wolf’s Rain vs. Children of Béfort, Fantastic Children Voting for: Children of Befort Why: If only there were more popular, they could be a front runner despite their flaws. Group D-3 Warriors of Seiryuu, Fushigi Yuugi vs. Ham-Hams, Hamtaro Voting for: Warriors of Seiryuu Why: Both candidates are extremely weak, but I give the slight edge to the warriors for character development. Group D-4 Macross Bridge Crew, Super Dimension Fortress Macross vs. Imperial Combat Troop – Flower Division, Sakura Wars franchise Voting for:Macross Bridge Crew Why: Don't feel strongly either way based on the comments and guides. Group D-5 Phantom Troupe, Hunter x Hunter vs. Kaleido Stage Crew, Kaleido Star Voting for: Kaleido Stage Crew Why: Guide and comments. Group D-6 Science Ninja Team Gatchaman, Gatchaman vs. Space/Time Administration Bureau, Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha A’s Voting for: Space/Time Administration Bureau, Group D-7 Shuffle Alliance, G-Gundam vs. Celestial Being, Gundam 00 Voting for: Shuffle Alliance Why: Couldn't care less either way. Group D-8 Aswad, My-Otome vs. Order of Magdalene, Chrono Crusade Voting for: Order of Magdalene Group D-9 Suzaku Seven Fushigi Yuugi vs. Debris Section, Planetes Voting for: Debris Section Why: Everyday people doing extraordinary things. Their accomplishments may lack the craziness and grandness of other teams, but their chemistry strong unity, and believable accomplishments make them a strong team by my standards. Group D-10 Chor Tempest, Simoun vs. Evening Primrose, Darker Than BLACK Voting for: Evening Promise Why: I wish there were more debates concerning this group. Still unsure of this vote. Group D-11 Shitennō, Otogi Zoshi vs. Mu, Toward The Terra Voting for: Mu Why: Seems even. Going by the comments. Group D-12 Bronze Saints, Saint Seiya vs. Kisaragi Girls High School Baseball Team, Princess Nine Voting for: Bronze Saints Why: Lack of guide for Baseball Team. Group D-13 Dai-Gurren Brigade, Gurren Lagann vs. Basroil Bridge Crew, Banner of the Stars I/II Voting for: Basroil Bridge Crew Why: Teamwork and less reliance on the leader. Both teams are solid -- hate to see one go first round. Group D-14 Social Welfare Agency, Gunslinger Girl vs. Attacked Mystification Police, Silent Möbius Voting for: AMP Why: I could see some of the pairs doing well in a duos contest, but as a team the Social Welfare Agency is lackluster. Group D-15 Dead Girls Red Garden vs. Juppongatana, Ruroni Kenshin Voting for: Juppongatana Why: Going with the flow of recent votes. Group D-16 Millenion, Gungrave vs. Terrestrial Administration Center (aka TAC), Blue Seed Voting for: TAC Why: Strong arguments and superior guide entry. |

Well, it is something of a habit for me...
![]() Group D-1 Magical Girl Squad, Tweeny Witches vs. Dragons of Heaven, X franchise Voting for: Dragons of Heaven. Honestly though...I'm not very impressed by either of them. Group D-2 Wolf Pack, Wolf’s Rain vs. Children of Béfort, Fantastic Children Voting for: Children of Befort. Group D-3 Warriors of Seiryuu, Fushigi Yuugi vs. Ham-Hams, Hamtaro Voting for: Warriors of Seiryuu. Group D-4 Macross Bridge Crew, Super Dimension Fortress Macross vs. Imperial Combat Troop – Flower Division, Sakura Wars franchise Voting for: Imperial Combat Troop – Flower Division. Group D-5 Phantom Troupe, Hunter x Hunter vs. Kaleido Stage Crew , Kaleido Star Voting for: Kaleido Stage Crew. Comments and guide entry. Group D-6 Science Ninja Team Gatchaman, Gatchaman vs. Space/Time Administration Bureau, Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha A’s Voting for Science Ninja Team Gatachaman. Group D-7 Shuffle Alliance, G-Gundam vs. Celestial Being, Gundam 00 Voting for: Celestial Being. I'll have to support them for now, but will probably argue against them later. Group D-8 Aswad, My-Otome vs. Order of Magdalene, Chrono Crusade Voting for: Aswad. Group D-9 Suzaku Seven Fushigi Yuugi vs. Debris Section, Planetes Voting for: Debris Section. Group D-10 Chor Tempest, Simoun vs. Evening Primrose, Darker Than BLACK Voting for: Chor Tempest. Group D-11 Shitennō, Otogi Zoshi vs. Mu, Toward The Terra Voting for: Mu. Group D-12 Bronze Saints, Saint Seiya vs. Kisaragi Girls High School Baseball Team, Princess Nine Voting for: Bronze Saints. I was hoping somebody would come up with an interesting guide entry for the other, but that didn't happen. Group D-14 Social Welfare Agency, Gunslinger Girl vs. Attacked Mystification Police, Silent Möbius Voting for: Social Welfare Agency. Coin toss. Round 1 Group D is now closed.
Final results can be found here. Lots of close races this time, with three contests coming down to a single vote out of 21; Dead Girls, Chor Tempest, and Warriors of Seiryuu all pulled out such narrow wins. Only three matches were decided by a double-digit spread, and one of those was directly attributable to a crap Guide entry. The low voter turn-out is regrettable but was undoubtedly influenced by the late start. That won't happen this time, as the new round should be up within a half-hour of this post. One concern: many of the matches in this round were won without anyone ever making any kind of argument supporting the winner. For me this was particularly irksome in Macross Bridge Crew's defeat of the Imperial Flower Division (someone who voted for them explain to me what they had in their favor that their competitor didn't), but what about the Gundam vs. Gundam match-up? I got the distinct impression that most people voting after the first day just favored the one that got a (deserved or not) early lead. There were several other cases, too, including at least a couple where I might have changed my vote with any kind of favorable arguments - and I did, in fact, do that in one case. Since the biggest of the rounds is over, I would like to strongly encourage people to start putting more arguments and justifications in so we don't see a repeat of that in round 2. They still won't be required until round 3, but if you have the time then please put in the extra few minutes of effort. |

Round 2 Group A is now closed.
And so we begin with the second round. A fair amount of chaff has been sorted out, and now we'll take a second pass. Barring major upsets, this should be a pretty strong bunch by the third round. And while it's about a month off yet, I want to start recruiting for helpers with the video clips for round 3. ccdx has been doing them for the last few tournaments but I haven't heard from him at all on this one, so I don't know if he's going to do them again or not. In case he doesn't, I want to have a back-up plan, as my experience with making video clips is mediocre at best. Group A-17 Section 9, Ghost in the Shell franchise vs. Nadesico crew, Martian Successor Nadesico Winner: Section 9 Total: 24-5 Group A-18 Team Rocket, Pokemon franchise vs. Team Urameshi, Yu Yu Hakusho Winner: Team Urameshi Total: 16-13 Group A-19 Paper Sisters, R.O.D. Gonna kick it off this time with an early vote.
Group A-17 Nadesico crew, Martian Successor Nadesico - I feel weird continuing to support this team, since I didn't care for the show that much, but the characters are all funny, get along reasonably well. I voted against Sec. 9 before and I'm not going to let them gain a victory again after beating the Angel Troupe. Group A-18 Team Urameshi, Yu Yu Hakusho - lots of character development and strong characters with a good chemistry between each other. Can't go wrong with them. Group A-19 Paper Sisters, R.O.D. TV - Could not even think about voting against the Paper Sisters. Group A-20 Hellsing Organization, Hellsing franchise - EDIT: I'm finding a lot of the arguments against Hellsing (or for Magic Users) quite compelling, the fact that they are a team (many faults do exist) makes them a candidate for this tournament, but due to their sheer, inherent awesomeness is what gets my vote. Group A-21 NERV, Neon Genesis Evangelion - yeesh this is a toughy, going with NERV. Group A-22 Le Secret du Roi, Le Chevalier d’Eon Group A-23 Knight Sabers, Bubblegum Crisis franchise - I was only in favor of Trapnest before because of their cool name. Knight Sabers blows them away easily IMO. Group A-24 Soyokaze crew, The Irresponsible Captain Tylor
- Yep. Group A-17
Section 9, Ghost in the Shell franchise vs. Nadesico crew, Martian Successor Nadesico Nadesico Crew I'm going to stick with them because while they are the probably biggest bunch of goofs, oddballs and wierdos ever assembled, they work really well together. Group A-18 Team Rocket, Pokemon franchise vs. Team Urameshi, Yu Yu Hakusho Team Rocket While they are defeated time and time again, they never, ever give up and keep on trying. I have to give them lots of credit for that. Group A-19 Paper Sisters, R.O.D. TV vs. Amaterasu crew, Starship Operators Amaterasu Crew Because of their guide entry mostly and while the Paper Sisters are good, I think the other team just has that edge. Group A-20 Magic User's Club, Magic User's Club vs. Hellsing Organization, Hellsing franchise Hellsing Organization Because they are clearing the stronger of the two. Group A-21 Colonel Mustang’s squadron, Fullmetal Alchemist vs. NERV, Neon Genesis Evangelion Col. Mustang's Sqquadron because they mesh so well, everyone has a place and they know their part and how to play it. Group A-22 Seishu Prefab Team, Cross Game vs. Le Secret du Roi, Le Chevalier d’Eon Seishu Prefab Team because the other team fell apart on each other in the end. Group A-23 Trapnest, NANA vs. Knight Sabers, Bubblegum Crisis franchise Knight Sabers mainly because I like those who fight the machinge (in more ways than one) than a band. Group A-24 Game Club, When They Cry/Higurashi no Naku Koroni franchise vs. Soyokaze crew, The Irresponsible Captain Tylor Soyokaze Crew Still voting for oddballs, nuts and other strange people. |

Section 9, Ghost in the Shell franchise vs. Nadesico crew, Martian Successor Nadesico No contest; the Nadesico crew is a fun bunch, and do nicely work together on occasion, but Section 9 is a well-oiled machine (heh!) which far more often shows superior teamwork. Group A-18 Team Rocket, Pokemon franchise vs. Team Urameshi, Yu Yu Hakusho Two teams from popular and long-running franchises up against each other? I don't have a preference or a clear feel for which is better, so I'll say Team Urameshi for the moment and leave my vote subject to change if someone more familiar with both makes some good arguments. (And please, someone knowledgeable of both do a comparison here!) Group A-19 Paper Sisters, R.O.D. TV vs. Amaterasu crew, Starship Operators The Paper Sisters, based on the few episodes I saw, are a tight-knit bunch, but so is the Amaterasu crew, whose survival literally depends on excellent teamwork and coordination. Group A-20 Magic User's Club, Magic User's Club vs. Hellsing Organization, Hellsing franchise Hellsing's got it going on! ![]() Group A-21 Colonel Mustang’s squadron, Fullmetal Alchemist vs. NERV, Neon Genesis Evangelion Ugh, I still abhor that Col. Mustang's Squadron even made it into the tournament, much less won last round. Besides, NERV is a vastly superior group anyway. Group A-22 Seishu Prefab Team, Cross Game vs. Le Secret du Roi, Le Chevalier d’Eon This one's a toughie for me, since I fought hard for Seishu last round and love the latter series. Being very familiar with both, I have to give the edge to Le Secret du Roi, despite some potential detracting factors which may become an issue in later rounds. Seishu arguably has better teamwork, but Le Secret is a more dynamic group which fits the series well. Group A-23 Trapnest, NANA vs. Knight Sabers, Bubblegum Crisis franchise NANA fans might think differently, but there's no question in my mind: the Knight Sabers are one of the all-time-great all-female anime teams. Group A-24 Game Club, When They Cry/Higurashi no Naku Koroni franchise vs. Soyokaze crew, The Irresponsible Captain Tylor I've heard such great things about the Game Club in the second half of the series that I'll still give them the benefit of the doubt - for now. |

Group A-17
Section 9, Ghost in the Shell franchise vs. Nadesico crew, Martian Successor Nadesico Voting Section 9, because, while they do have some weaknesses, their "team nature" shows up especially in those sequences when individual team members are cut out of the loop -- yet continue to operate as part of the notional team. That is team spirit and coordination. Group A-18 Team Rocket, Pokemon franchise vs. Team Urameshi, Yu Yu Hakusho I like both, but I have to choose one, and Team Rocket gets my vote for the way their team units operate in unison. Overall, the Team Rocket organisation has some remarkable failures in unity (something that, in my opinion, will disqualify them from a shot at the finals), but on a local level, their sense of commitment and fellowship is hard to deny. Group A-19 Paper Sisters, R.O.D. TV vs. Amaterasu crew, Starship Operators Oh, sheer agony. I love both teams dearly, and I think they are remarkably coherent and coordinated. There is also a deep sense of personal commitment and love for the other team members, in both teams. It comes down to an evaluation of which team achieves the most in terms of the situation they are placed in.... and the Amaterasu crew gets my vote. Group A-20 Magic User's Club, Magic User's Club vs. Hellsing Organization, Hellsing franchise Another two strong teams... but overall, I feel very few qualms about giving my vote to the Magic User's Club. Somehow, the Hellsing Organisation has never struck me as entirely, well, together. Sure, the Magic User's Club is filled with ditzy kids and weirdos, but they stick together and manage to achieve what they set out to do, Not to mention, they've got heart. Group A-21 Colonel Mustang’s squadron, Fullmetal Alchemist vs. NERV, Neon Genesis Evangelion Let's see... a small, extremely effective and intensely loyal military group, versus a largely faceless organisation where most of the people have no clue what the overall mission is? Easy choice, Mustang's Squad gets my vote. And I still say, it's not a squadron. They're not cavalry, navy or air force. They're army. Group A-22 Seishu Prefab Team, Cross Game vs. Le Secret du Roi, Le Chevalier d’Eon I have to admit, I am totally indifferent here. Try as I might, I can't offer much justification for my choice other than a dislike of the other. I vote for the Seishu Prefab Team. Group A-23 Trapnest, NANA vs. Knight Sabers, Bubblegum Crisis franchise Hmm. This is not much better. I think I'll have to go with the Knight Sabers, because I generally think Trapnest does not show much coordination and cooperation, in comparison. Group A-24 Game Club, When They Cry/Higurashi no Naku Koroni franchise vs. Soyokaze crew, The Irresponsible Captain Tylor No doubt in my mind: The Game Club will go far. Sure, they're kids, and it looks like they're only playing -- but they're serious. Deadly serious, as it turns out. They impress me, and that takes some doing. - abunai |

Group A-17: Section 9 (Ghost in the Shell franchise)
I don't see the Major and her group losing this early. Group A-18: Team Urameshi (Yu Yu Hakusho) I'll vote for them this one last round. At the very least, they got more accomplished than Team Rocket ever did in the 10+ years they've tried taking over the world of Pokemon. Group A-19: Paper Sisters (ROD TV) I nominated them and with their teamwork and unity, I'm not gonna see them get written off this early in the tourney. Group A-20: Magic User's Club (Magic Users Club) The Hellsing organization have Alucard for the most part as their vampire slaughter tank, so there's not much in the way of teamwork needed when he gets involved. Group A-21: Colonel Mustang's Squadron (Full Metal Alchemist) More unity and cohesion with Mustang's group than spoiler[the underlings of NERV being clueless over the ulterior motives of some of their major members.] Group A-22: Seishu Prefab Team (Cross Game) Only because I'm still going giddy for Cross Game. Group A-23: Knight Sabers (Bubblegum Crisis franchise) I didn't see much in the way of chemistry between Trapnest compared to what I seen of the Black Stones, so Knight Sabers get my vote here. Group A-24: Game Club (Higurashi no Naku Koro ni franchise) They're still one of this bracket's strongest teams in my eyes. No way I'm voting them off this early. |

I'm still at the point where I don't really have strong reasons for the majority of my votes since I am familiar with probably less than a quarter of the nominees overall. But people who do know more should definitely know that any arguments they make now will very likely affect the voting of others in later rounds, should said team make it that far.
Group A-17 Voting for: Section 9, Ghost in the Shell franchise Group A-18 Voting for: Team Urameshi, Yu Yu Hakusho Team Rocket was good for a first round vote but I don't think I can justify giving them anymore. Group A-19 Voting for: Amaterasu crew, Starship Operators Group A-20 Voting for: Hellsing Organization, Hellsing franchise Group A-21 Voting for: NERV, Neon Genesis Evangelion Group A-22 Voting for: Seishu Prefab Team, Cross Game This one is based mainly on the strength of arguments made last round. Group A-23 Voting for: Knight Sabers, Bubblegum Crisis franchise I love Trapnest and think they are awesome but they are another group that I cannot justify voting for at this point because there is some DEEP dysfunction there as well (I'm still a bit surprised they actually won before). Group A-24 Voting for: Soyokaze crew, The Irresponsible Captain Tylor |

Group A-17
Section 9, Ghost in the Shell franchise vs. Nadesico crew, Martian Successor Nadesico Section 9 Group A-18 Team Rocket, Pokemon franchise vs. Team Urameshi, Yu Yu Hakusho Team Rocket Group A-19 Paper Sisters, R.O.D. TV vs. Amaterasu crew, Starship Operators Paper Sisters Group A-20 Magic User's Club, Magic User's Club vs. Hellsing Organization, Hellsing franchise Magic User's Club Group A-21 Colonel Mustang’s squadron, Fullmetal Alchemist vs. NERV, Neon Genesis Evangelion Colonel Mustang's Squad Also, abunai has a point; in the army a group of soldiers of roughly section strength, but smaller than platoon strength, whether they work together regularly (more often called a "section" unless they do not specifically fill the roles of a section) or not is referred to as a "squad"; hell, if on parade a group of people less than platoon strength is literally given commands under the title of "squad". This is not information I've looked up, I literally am an army reservist. I don't know if standing orders and code are different in Japan or America, but "squadron" is never used to describe a group of soldiers in any corps of the Army. Not even in armoured or light cavalry is a group of soldiers referred to as a "squadron". Group A-22 Seishu Prefab Team, Cross Game vs. Le Secret du Roi, Le Chevalier d’Eon Seishu Prefab Team; since in the first round Key put up quite an argument for them. Group A-23 Trapnest, NANA vs. Knight Sabers, Bubblegum Crisis franchise Knight Sabers because I know them. Convince me otherwise. Group A-24 Game Club, When They Cry/Higurashi no Naku Koroni franchise vs. Soyokaze crew, The Irresponsible Captain Tylor The Game Club |
