Some anime titles come loaded with all manner of parodies and homages to other anime or pop culture in general (Gunbuster, Excel Saga, and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya being particularly acute examples), but even ones that don't sometimes throw in the occasional odd reference to see if viewers are paying careful attention to side details.
Case in point: the episode of Blood+ aired on Adult Swim in the States last night (#41, I believe). This is not a series known for its sly references, but if you watch carefully at the beginning, after the explosion and just before the main credits roll, you can see a restaurant sign for "Bubbee Gumper Shrimp Company," which most Americans at least in their mid-20s should recognize as a reference to Bubba Gump Shrimp in Forrest Gump. What are some others you may have noticed recently in titles generally not known for their pop culture or anime references? Details not already reported as "Trivia" in the Encyclopedia entries for the title in question are preferable. (I'll be reporting the one above immediately after writing this.) |

There actually is a chain of restaurants named "Bubba Gump Shrimp Company" - I've eaten at a couple of them while on the road. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bubba_Gump_Shrimp_Company I'd love to know if the animators were really referencing the movie directly, or if they just knew about the restaurants. |

There's a Bubba Gump Shrimp Company in my state too. I've never eaten there before. What I always wondered is, since the Bubba Gump Shrimp Company is real, is Forrest Gump real too? Is the shrimp company/restaurant really owned by some WWII veteran who got shot in the buttocks and stutters?

I was watching a Lupin III film the other week (I'm 95% sure it was Lupin III: Tokyo Crisis) and right at the end, shortly before the credits roll, there's a street scene in which a truck drives past. Painted on the side of the truck's trailer in large letters is the name and distinctive pumpkin logo of the German heavy metal band Helloween.

Forest Gump is a fictional character. I dont know if the shrimp is a coincidence or if they barrowed the name from the movie, but I'm sure that Forest Gump was just a movie. (Side note: forest was in the vietnam war, not WWII) I know Black Lagoon makes a lot of references, but one of Brett Farve mentioned by Revy sticks out to me because I saw it right after the seahawks regretibly lost to the packers. (Farve is the QB for the Packers). Edit: I seem to have missed the topic a little bit because that isnt hidden. Sorry. Last edited by Nomeru on Sun Jan 20, 2008 2:46 pm; edited 1 time in total |

There's an episode of Kimagure Orange Road that references The Terminator and another that parodies Top Gun which I found particularly amusing.
In Great Teacher Onizuka Kanzaki is forced to stay in hotel room with a bunch of Gundam nerds by Onizuka and dubbed Salah in reference to the MSG character(who was also blonde) by them. In the Black Jack movie (the first one), the puzzle that Pinoko puts togather in one scene is of Astro Boy which was also created by the same person. |

I've noticed that in Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex Solid State Society Motoko addresses the support AIs or androids (it's not clear who she's talking to) who manage her safehouse as Conan and Loki, after two pint-sized anime detectives who are actually much taller people in children's bodies. I thought it was cute :p The whole SAC series actually contains lots of references to classic film and literature; the first season is practically based off of the works of J.D. Salinger.
There's also an episode of Galaxy Angel Z that parodies the film Jaws, with Forte as Quint. Of course, almost everything in Galaxy Angel is a parody of or reference to something else:P |

In two seperate animes I have seen references to the KFC Colonel Sanders.
Once in Project A-Ko, when the Colonel made a suprise apperance as a villian in a horror movie. And again in Midori no Hibi, this time as a statue. Now I do not know if KFC exists in Japan or not. But I find it kind of funny that the KFC Colonel is being used as a reference to US society. Or maybe I am reading too much into it....... |

FLCL has tons of them, the one that comes to mind isn't exactly hidden as I think Haruko make it overt but John Woo and his obsession with doves is parodied in one of the episodes.
The Ring, the movie, is parodied in Detective Loki and the stalker girl in Gantz is dubbed Sadako pretty much right away. About Excel Saga, there is a subtle reference to the sandworms of Dune in one of the episodes, shortly after she goes to America, if I am not mistaken. |

Though he pronounces his name Farve it is spelled Favre. Frankly, that confuses the shit out of me though. I don't want to say that he's pronouncing his own name wrong but considering how it's spelled I figure he must either be insanely stupid (which I hear he is) or he doesn't want to appear to be French or something. I wanted to look it up on wikipedia but the whole article is just a rant about how amazing he is followed by a spreadsheet of how amazing he is. It's off-topic but if anyone can actually explain it to me then my brother and i would be immensely grateful as this issue boths both of us every time someone mentions Favre. Also, in Black Lagoon they drink Heireken which is a mock-up of Heineken. The labeling makes it even more clear. My favourite hidden reference is the Hard Gay appearance in tMoHS. When they're doing the school culture festival he's dancing outside one of the classrooms. Last edited by blind_assassin on Sun Jan 20, 2008 7:39 pm; edited 1 time in total |

Of course the ABCB cafe is named after the popular Genesis song of the same name.
That is so cool! I've been a big Helloween fan since Keeper of the Seven Keys part one was originally released. I love their artwork. Their cover of Lay all Your Love on me is really hilarious. |

I can only think of two references I've seen:
1. In The World of Narue when Narue and Kazu saw a movie there were a lot of references to the ''Terminator". 2. In Higurashi no Naku Koro ni there was a reference to KFC, it involved the Colonel and the name was changed to "KCF". I thought it was pretty funny... |

KFC is rather successful in Japan. Kyoususke also has an encounter with Mr. Fried Chicken in Orange Road. My biggest question is why is KFC so popular in Japan on Christmas? This really is a big deal in Japan and there are a few sites for those who aren't familiar with this oddity. |

I got a good laugh out of that in Higurashi especially because Rena found it in the dump and wanted to "rescue him" and take him home.
Many an anime series also reference the McDonalds "food" chain by turning the characteristic arching M upside down to create a W. Inu Yasha for example. |
