He didn't did he? I was listening to it very carefully and I'm pretty sure he always said "that shinigami" or somesuch thing.

He said a couple things, some gender neautral like that, but I'm pretty sure that at least one of the lines was something like "the face of the soul reaper as he dragged my brother home," or something like that (while showing the sillhouette of a not "he")..

And yeah, it's not that Ganju's Va is bad, or not right for the part or anything, it just bugs me how similar they sound, almost like a cover artist or something. Wink

Ok, I had to go back and listen to this again Smile

"Two things I'll never forget. Faces. Those two faces. Cruel face of that soul reaper as he dragged my brother's mangled body back home. And the face of my dear dying brother happily giving thanks to that same soul reaper. Why did he do that? Why would my brother be so forgiving? To this day, I just don't know. But there's one thing I do know. Somehow my brother never blamed the soul reapers, and he never hated them."

So yes, you're right and I stand corrected Smile Ganju swallows the "he" in "as he dragged" so you have to listen to it specifically - I was concentrating on the later part when he says "why did he do that" but then he's talking about his brother.

It's one fine scene, BTW - love the music on the background and Kuukaku who for once lets his brother make a decision on his own.

i believe it was that way, being the use of the word he, in the viz manga as well. could someone perhaps check to see what he used in Japanese? that could answer alot of questions.

perhaps they were avoiding the use of she so as to not reveal who it really was

I checked the manga too, and it works around that.

"There are two things I'll never forget... that the soul reaper who dragged my brother mangled and dying, to our house... had the face of the devil himself. And that my brother's face looked happy... when he thanked that soul reaper at the end!"

Gender there refers to the devil, not the soul reaper, right? I don't know enough Japanese to check the original one.

That would make sense, considering the fact that when they showed who it was, that person looked exactly like spoiler[Rukia,] (which I don't ever remember being in the series in the first place. Must have missed something.) so you'd think even an idiot would be able to figure it out unless they changed the gender. If I remember correctly, both Ganju and Kuukaku thought that it was a he in the first place because it looked like a he when they first saw them dragging their brother back, then when spoiler[Ganju first saw Rukia,] he was very surprised to not only find out that spoiler[she was the killer, but that it was a she.] So I don't really think it matters anyways.

Ganju says "I was young so I don't remember much of it" so that covers it, but I don't think it ever says anywhere that Kuukaku was there, she might not have been. Because she's sharper than that...

Hmm, "he" in that case would refer to the Soul Reaper too, again inaccurate.

The problem is that Japan doesn't really use gender-specific pronouns, there is no real "he" or "she", at least not in common usage, so there likely is no "correct" direct translation of that line without knowing the context of it (which Viz SHOULD know at this point and make use of). It's because of this that gander is sometimes tricky in manga, like how it was really hard to tell whether Deidara in Naruto was a man, or a woman who talked a bit tomboyishly.

Well, in that case, Kuukaku would obviously not know, considering she wasn't there. But if she was, you're right, she probably would have known. Can't really take too much away from Ganju though. Not only does he not remember it very well (like you said), but he probably only saw the outline of spoiler[Rukia] in the dark, and couldn't tell exactly who it was.

Ouch. Yep, that served me right Wink

And I can't believe they left it in the middle of a fight too. Mad I was feeling so lucky, having double-Ikkaku goodness, both on the dub and the ongoing anime. I might still catch the occasional bits of the dub on YT. Oh, YTV I hate you.

Well, you still do get to see him at his best in the fansubs. spoiler[(He does have the coolest Bankai out of anyone in the series, IMHO)]

Hey, if it makes you feel any better, we still don't have half the awesome shows you guys have. Still though, that really does suck royally.(this time sympathizing for you)

Well...

spoiler[I like Byakuya. He's sooo cool and pretty. His bankai, though, weeell. I think it's cool too. But, for me, it's too, I don't know, um... pink? Razz

I read this in a fanfiction. And I thought it was really funny and kinda fitting.
In the fanfiction, Zaraki was thinking about Renji moving to 6th squad. And he described Byakuya's bankai as " the fruitest bankai of all bankais that ever bankai'd in the history of bankai-dom."

As of now, though, Ikkaku's bankai is the coolest, for me.]

Meh, a really close 4th, behind spoiler[Hitsuguya's at #2 and Renji's at #3. All though Byakuya's still is the most deadly of them all.]

Gee listen to us! We sound just like a bunch of 12 year olds arguing over who has the coolest of what! That's okay though. I'm still 12 years old at heart! Wink Best start talking about the dub now though, before we get yelled at.
